In a response, Obama calls himself “a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans.”
Yeah. So fierce that he ran around with Donnie McClurkin and skipped this year’s Gay Pride Parade in Chicago so he could get a haircut and go to the gym. So fierce he has postponed dealing with DADT until the 12th of Never.

The reason we don’t matter to Obama is we are not the ones who got him elected. It was the evangelicals that did that by staying home and not throwing their votes to McCain on Election Day. Had the GOP mobilized them the way they do every 4 years, McCain would have won.
Obama cannot afford to lose the rightwing evangelicals as constituents. He knows that in 4 years he is going to be as unpopular as Bush, perhaps more so. But he might be able to win re-election if enough evangelicals think he is Jeebus, just like they thought Bush was.

Bill got into trouble with this because if ignorance. He made a well intentioned comment at a Harvard town hall, that he would end the “ban”. His assumption was that it was a similar situation to Truman ending segregation in the military by exec. order. The error was that it wasn’t illegal to be Black and the segregated military was by custom and not by law. Homosexuality was illegal in the military and a change in the UCMJ was needed. Only Congress can do that. Sam Nunn D-GA, Chm. of the Sen. Armed Forces Comm. and Colin Powell Chm. JCS totally sabotaged any effort to change the UCMJ. DADT was the best that Bill could get. Obama saying he would eliminate DADT..and then what.. go back to the old criminal penalties? Talk is cheap…the question to be asked is what is going to be the wording in the UCMJ re: Homosexuality and Homosexual behavior. A court won’t work because the UCMJ is, except in very rare cases, outside of usual judicial oversight. (IANAL)
With the ban on gay marriage passing in California,
is there a case headed to the Supreme Court?
If this can get to the Supreme Court perhaps something very good will happen. The CA supreme court had upheld gay marriage rights. I don’t know much about the CA constitution, if it mirrors the
US close enough for the arguements to be on target for success for LGBT cause. Anyone know what’s going on there?

My aunt and uncle – 60ish, liberal, normally very politically aware – still to this day believe McCain cheated at the Saddleback Forum. A couple of months after the debate Mom was trying to tell them what a con O was and all they could say was “McCain cheated. They said so on NBC.” At that point their eyes just glazed over and she could tell they were beyond listening. Then after listening to this exchange my other aunt says “Would you vote for him if he was white?” Instant racial inference as if my mom had not said a word. Mom just threw her arms up and walked out. They do not hear, they do not listen, they do not want to know.

The media is spinning Obama’s choice of Warren to give the inaugural invocation (and tell me again, why do we need a prayer at the installation of a new president?) as a shrewd political move–an appeal to “moderate” evangelicals as a way to peel away their support from the Republican party. Rick Warren manages to avoid the hardcore reputation of the Jerry Falwells and Pat Robertsons of fundamentalism while entertaining exactly the same intolerant, anti-intellectual beliefs. Somehow Warren has managed to portray himself as the Dr. Phil of fundies and lots of nice moderate Protestant folks have fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.
One of the first things that struck me as dishonest about Obama was his faux Christianity. Obama grew up in entirely secular households and embraced Christianity only after arriving in Chicago by joining the most politically activist black church in town in order to launch a political career. Believing that he was “born-again” is like believing he came out of the Chicago political brothel as a virgin.
