Episode 12: We are the Firewall

Well, it looks like Trump is an unstoppable force on the way to the Republican nomination for president. The Supreme Court seems to want to help him out. And he’s planning mass deportations and concentration camps. What can we do about it when he and his minority of voters suck all the oxygen out of the room and we are invisible? We do like the Germans are doing: mass protests against the far right AfD party. We become the firewall. Protest after protest, week after week, all across the country until the media finally stops chasing the diner people and recognizes that we are the majority.

Listen to it at Hey, We’re Here, episode 12: We are the Firewall.

  1. I do not know what sort of transient chemical imbalance prompted me to do this, but I’m a candidate for DNC Committeeperson from Colorado. I do not expect to win, particularly since I’m not campaigning very hard.

    • I believe we would all be very pleased and proud if you did win. What does Dr Dr Mrs Propertius think? (Apologies to you both if I screwed up her degrees.)

      • She’s Canadian. I think her general reaction is “not my circus, not my monkey”. She’s really soured on both American and Canadian politics. She still, however, firmly believes that “the American Constitution is the most brilliant plan of government ever devised by the mind of man.”

You guys actually sort of know her: she used to comment here as “Alicewonderland” back in the day.

It’s sort of amazing how high one can get in the Democratic Party just by showing up every now and then. I first became a Precinct Leader because I was one of two people who showed up at caucus and we had to pick two. I kind of fell into being an Area Coordinator, House District Chair, County Vice-Chair, and State Central and Executive Committeeperson the same way. I do not think serendipity will get me on the DNC, though.

        • Even if you don’t make it, Propertius, at least you showed up and engaged in the process at higher levels than most of us, especially sloths like me.

As to the American Constitution, I am still waiting for the plan of government devised by the mind of woman….. This one devised by propertied white men is really pissing me off. I am so tired of being furious.

So lucky you are married to a brilliant Canadian!!! It must be nice to know that you have a country to flee to when this one goes down in flames. They won’t let me in!

    • I don’t know but I think it’s awesome that you are running. We all need to pitch in however we can because we don’t want to tell our children and grandchildren we did nothing if we turn into an autocracy.

  2. The usual post.

  3. Happy Caturday! 🐈

    • That’ll learn him! Loved the curled paws at the end.

      How’s the diet coming IBW?

      • Not really trying to lose weight now, just trying to avoid putting it back on. I’m hovering just below 180 lbs (or 82 kg. if you prefer). I started at 225 lbs, so I think this is sufficient.

        • Fantastic! Losing that much weight is a challenge but you did it, congratulations. Do you find that you are eating less at the lower weight?

  4. Well, the Court has spoken. The result is what I expected, but the reasoning is not. I expected them to hold that a criminal conviction is required to activate the insurrection clause, not to rule that states can’t enforce it (particularly since the Constitution puts elections squarely in the hands of the states). So, states can keep you from voting (thanks tio the gutting of the Voting Rights Act) but they can’t keep you from running. Fun times.

  5. The real question may be whom will the Republican Party choose as its Presidential nominee once Benedict Donald flames out in one way or another.

    From the Palmer Report:

    • I dunno, IBW, Ronald Reagan proved you can win an election and even “govern” for several years with obvious full-blown Alzheimer’s so I’m not sure dementia will be enough to stop him. I’d say that maybe a stroke would do it, but then we have Wilson as a counterexample for that.
