David Brooks to Norah O’Donnell, “I sat next to a Republican senator once at dinner and he had his hand on my inner thigh the whole time.”

davidbrooks

This has to be the weirdest story of the day. From the MSNBC transcript:

O’DONNELL: What, what’s happened?

BROOKS: You know, all three of us spend a lot of time covering politicians and I don’t know about you guys, but in my view, they’re all emotional freaks of one sort or another. They’re guaranteed to invade your personal space, touch you. I sat next to a Republican senator once at dinner and he had his hand on my inner thigh the whole time. I was like, ehh, get me out of here.

HARWOOD: What?

BROOKS: I can only imagine what happens to you guys.

O’DONNELL: Sorry, who was that?

BROOKS: I’m not telling you, I’m not telling you. But so, a lot of them spend so much time needing people’s love and yet they are shooting upwards their whole life, they’re not that great in normal human relationships. And so, they’re like freaks, they don’t know how to, they’re lonely. They reach out. I’ve spoken to a lot of young women who are Senate staffers and they’ll have these middle age guys who are sort of in the middle of a mid-life crisis. Emotionally needy, they don’t know how to do it and sort of like these St. Bernards drooling everywhere. And you find a lot of this happens in mid-life and among very powerful people who are extremely lonely.

Just one question: why did Brooks leave the guy’s hand there through the whole dinner? Washington, D.C. is a very strange place, whether you’re talking about the politicians or the press.

The video is at Think Progress.

  1. I SAW that — so weird.

  2. Next question:

O’DONNELL: Can I ask one other question David? Do you think, what about female or women politicians? Are they dignified and are there examples of when they have not? Or does it tend to be the men who less dignified?

BROOKS: Yeah, I think that’s mostly a matter of genetics. I do think that…I do think there’s loneliness.

O’DONNELL: That was just a softball, David, and you really hit it very well.

BROOKS: Yeah, I wish I could think of sort of St. Bernards, sloppy women who are licking their aides, but but no, I can’t think of any.

    HARWOOD: I’m not going there.

O’DONNELL: Did you have a couple drinks at lunch, David?

  3. mabey Brooks is also a emotional freak. hey he works 4 MSNBC need i say more

  4. bb is rd okay

    • She’s fine. She is taking a break from frequent posting after more than a year of writing a substantive essay nearly every day.

  5. Is this for real? Seriously.

    • Yes, it’s for real. Do you think it’s Mitch McConnell? Or maybe Lindsey Graham?

      • Could be yes to both. I used to work in DC and my gf used to work for McConnell’s wife. Boy, do I have stories. But I really don’t feel like getting sued so I won’t pass any on.

One thing that I heard was during 911, the POTUS, the VP and all of the Secretaries were shepareded out of DC except for one. That would be Elaine Chow, the Secretary of Labor. She found out that the buildings were being evacuated when she looked out the window and asked her aide where everyone was going.

        • Ouch. Now there’s a lonely feeling when you’re left out of the group. Ah, yes, the stories are amazing indeed. And they all tell stuff on each other. I’ve never seen a town with so little secrets. What’s most amazing to me is how little of it actually gets out through the press.

  6. I need some information. My friend is transferring to Florida to be GM of Tri-rail in Miami.
He was asking about different areas to live.
Weston – Pembroke Pines – Davies – Miramar.
I said I would ask people on the site that have information about living conditions in these neighborhoods.
He is like one of my kids and I am so proud of him and want a good place for him to live. He went to the same school as my kids.

    • What about Coral Gables or Coconut Grove? The **used** to be very nice places.

    • most of those places are in Broward and of the list Davie is probably the most non-stepford. But tell him to check out Miami Shores. It would be closer to work. It is a lovely community and he might be able to get a small house for a decent price with the market tanking in Florida.
If he chose Weston he would have a straight shot down the palmetto parkway to work. But the place is a soccer mom, one up your neighbors nightmare. Pembroke Pines is similar.

  7. I wonder how long ago this was? I don’t see Brooks as being someone you’d potentially embarrass yourself over.

  8. That was a bit creepy. I second your question bb, um, why did he let the guys hand stay there. Who was the lonely one there.

  9. There are two possibilities: Brooks liked the senator’s hand in his inner thigh, or Brooks is a whore, willing to be sexually harassed and hoping to have greater access with the senator.

  10. This gives a whole NEW PERSPECTIVE on Chris Matthews ‘tingle up my legs’ comment!

  11. Helen, I live there. Where are his offices going to be? Is he and the family bi-lingual? Most people have moved north from Miami as its been a Banana Republic for so long. The housing market there is at the top of the shambles list. At the same time, if he’s buying, its a buyer’s market. If I were him though, I would not buy. The market is unstable, with homes in the best neighborhods being emptied rapidly. Tri-Rail is in big trouble down here financially. I hope he’s ready to deal with that. They’ve cut services, schedules, staffing. At the same time, the stimulus money is going to expand interstate highways and roads. I always thought we should be promoting public transportation and expanding things like Tri-Rail, linking it to other Public Transportation systems. Not happening here. As usual, the concrete and road builders are always getting the money. If your friend intends to enjoy the beach, its free you know, then he should move closer than Weston or Pembroke Pines. It depends on where the offices he’ll be working out of are though. I’ll check back. Give me more info.

  12. Is there a way to give my emal address without publicly putting it on here?

    • If Helen gives me permission, I could send you her e-mail (or send her yours) as long as you use your real e-mail address when you post comments.

  13. BB, I do use my real email address and my real name. Feel free to give Helen my email. The offices appear to be in Pompano. So I suggest looking from there Northward, say Deerfield. Tri Rail runs from Miami to West Palm Beach. Tri county. Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Deerfield Beach would place the gentleman dead center and its very nice. Boca Raton, even North Ft. Lauderdale. Definitely NOT Miami, Hollywood.
