We won!

The wars are over:

Washington Post:

Source: Al-Qaida head bin Laden dead, US in possession of body; Obama to speak Sunday night

Al-Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden is dead and the United States has his body, a person familiar with the developments says.

President Barack Obama is expected to make that announcement from the White House late Sunday night.

Seriously bring everyone home.

UPDATE:  Apparently this news makes us far more vulnerable to terrorists.  So, maybe it means more war.  Not less.

UPDATE 2: Elvis bin Laden

  1. now Americans can cheer the way they danc’d on our loved ones’ graves

  2. Yes, katiebird, we only won the battle but not the war. If, however, the death of Bin Laden promotes a power struggle within the Al Queda leadership which will bring the eradication of Al Queda, then we can say that we have won the war..

  3. Call me a party pooper but why do I get a sense of Jessica Lynch style sensationalism in the story of this operation?
Don’t get me wrong, if anyone deserved the death penalty, it was bin Laden. But the details sound like something only the A Team could pull off.

    • I totally agree, RD. It stinks. Here’s what Lambert says. Are you shitting me pretty much says it all.

    • I was thinking the same thing last night. Something about this just doesn’t pass the smell test.

      And…

How is it that “All of a sudden” ( not literally mind you ) Bin Laden is located, in a mansion no less, when we have been told ( recently even ) that he was somewhere in a cave?

      ???????

    • SEAL Team 6 is the A Team.

      • I don’t doubt it. The question is not how good the team is. It’s the timing and orchestration of the news.

    • I was thinking Jessica Lynch during this and when I spoke to my sister, she said she immediately thought of the Pat Tillman made for TV movie ….same deal

  4. This is being retweeted:
Best Osama tweet so far: “beloved character actor, Osama bin Laden, star of “Fox News”, dies age 54″
    Hysterical!

  5. We won? Well, for some definition of “we.” If “we” won:

    1. End the wars

    2. Restore Constitutional government

    3. Stop torture.

    4. No domestic drones.

For starters, and off the top of my head.

    • Your points are totally valid. But.

It just seems to me that this is a good time to declare victory and shut the war machine down.

My title was actually an attempt at irony. Since there’s not a hope in hell that anyone is coming home.

      • Richardenglenbc tweeted that since Osama was in Pakistan (or so we are told), you gotta wonder why so many tours were spent in Iraq.
I never wondered about that. It was always the oil.

    • What I don’t get is how this translates to another “accomplishment” for Obama. Hey, why don’t we give him another Nobel peace prize. Is there anything he can’t do? He’s probably waiting until October 2012 to announce that he has cured cancer and can reverse the aging process.
Never has so much praise been heaped on one individual for so little effort.

  6. What if it didn’t play out like they planned? What if they invaded the compound and bin laden committed suicide? That would really screw things up wouldn’t it? Wouldn’t it have been better to capture him, bring him to the US, try him and then deep six him in some supermax? That might have been demoralizing to al Qaeda. But if he killed himself, that would have deprived us of a win and would have kept the “you’ll never catch me alive, coppers” myth going. And burial at sea takes care of a messy post mortem or photographs that bin laden died by his own hand. For all we know, he had a loyalist behead him on camera when they realized the compound security had been breached. Sort of like seppuka or whatever the heck they call it in Japan. That would have preserved his honor and kept hope alive for his crazy followers.
Just trying to think like a megalomaniacal terrorist cult leader…

Because something about this story just doesn’t seem kosher, if you get my drift.

    • Lol! The BFF says I am fantasizing. Which is true. But I guarantee that we are destined for decades of Osama sightings because of the way his “burial” was handled. The method of disposal seems hasty.

      • Hasty? Seems well thought out to me….no one will be able to locate the body and re-run those DNA tests. The local radio news this morning said “they followed proper procedures for a Muslim burial at sea.” My chin hurts from constantly hitting the table.

    • I wouldn’t be at all suprised if you’re right that Osama may well have been killed by one of his loyalists. I don’t think he’d do it himself. Suicide is a dreadful sin in I***m, and Osama has gone to some trouble over the years to cast himself as the heir of the legitimate caliphate, even to the style of his turban. (Yes, I know. The bombers. The rationalization is hat they die in combat.)

      • Well, it’s the way Hitler went out.

        • and there are still “Hitler” sightings to this day!

He ( Hitler that is ) was spotted at a Burger King with Elvis and those pesky Grey Aliens, somewhere in Texas the day!

  7. Hitler declared dead on May 1st.too.

  8. I’m just glad he’s gone. Now can we get out of Afghanistan? We’ve been there almost 10 years and the mission has been accomplished.

    • Except that now they’ll remember they haven’t gotten Mullah Omar yet. Anyone remember ol’ Omar?
