See Masha Gessen for analysis:
HA! You probably thought we could just drag him out of the White House by the hair. I think it’s all starting to dawn on us that the Republican Party leadership is going to let this go on indefinitely even though Trump was defeated and can’t get undefeated. Gessen talks about vertical alignment and what that means to the rest of us.
It’s not a good thing.

Meanwhile, Moderna has posted some very good news on a Covid vaccine:

More good news:
I went looking for a sink to kinda restore my 1950’s bathroom to its sort of original style, minus the colored tile. I’ve been looking for months and months. The ones I saw online were all colored pink or blue or green or had some kind of fatal flaw.
So yesterday, I went to Construction Junction in Pittsburgh to see if I could find what I was looking for. I looked a dozens of old sinks and was just about to give up when I just casually gave a second look to one I had passed over initially because it looked like it was attached to one of those ugly oak vanities that I’m trying to replace and all of the sudden, the light shone upon it and choirs of angels started to sing like the grail beacon in the Monty Python movie. I had found it.

It’s pristine, it’s white, it’s the right year, shape, size, everything. How much was it?
$5.00.
That’s right, you can get a better than now sink in perfect condition for next to nothing. Architectural and salvage reuse stores are amazing.
Well, it was one good thing to happen in 2020. Everything else lately has kind of been suboptimal.

It’s pretty tough to beat 5 bucks… plus if your pluming has shutoff valves it’s an easy do it your self job, with all new hoses and a new faucet you are in great shape, depending on the faucet you choose it could easily be under $100
What an illuminating interview with Gessen- I like the idea of a reckoning, not just stuffing everything under the rug but instead dealing with what we have dodged with this election. I’m not ready for forgiveness and forgetting. Dial back the healing schtick, Mr. Biden.
The rest of the post was good too.
I forget the source, but while I would assume there were exceptions both ways, I read that Biden won the majority of counties which did better than average economically during the current Administration. Trump won the majority of counties which did worse.
Any foreigner who knew that, and only that, about this year’s U. S. presidential election would guess that Biden was the incumbent.
[pH-14 bitter sarcasm]
But hey, Trump “won” in 2016 purely because of “economic anxiety”. Russopublican cheating or bigotry had nothing whatsoever to do with it. The Purity Pony Left says so, so it must be true.

What all these analysts, including Anne Applebaum, is saying is that the country is not giving some people the security they expected or thought their parents had. You can interpret that as economically, socially, ethnically whatever. And an autocrat promises that they will get that stability and relief of their anxieties by turning over power to him who will make the decisions on their behalf.
Life is too stressful, it’s too confusing, I’ll let someone else tell me what to do.
But after they give up their ability to make decisions, their conditions in life do not improve. And that actually works in the autocrat’s favor. The autocrat has an interest in maintaining anxiety. They will simply blame the lefties for it and double down. Everything would be great if we didn’t have those damn liberals.
I think when all the analysis is over, they’re going to discover that the way Trump handled Covid actually worked FOR him. There wouldn’t be lockdowns and a dive in the economy if it weren’t for those blue state governors freaking all you good hard working people crazy.
If you’re suffering, it’s because of Cuomo or Whitmer or Tom Wolf.
Don’t accommodate that. We can’t coddle people who turn to autocrats.
And now for something completely off-topic:
