    • Week-end Wrap – Political Economy – September 27, 2020
by Tony Wikrent Slouching toward denouement Capitulation Will Not Halt Trump’s Coup David Sirota, September 24, 2020 An important review of political events last week. Yoy may not agree with Sirota’s interpretation, but his analyses has proven correct repeatedly. Remember that Sirota accurately outlined the future course of American politics in his 2008 book […]

This is the plan.

William sums up the stupid and reckless executive order plan that Trump rolled out:

We now realize why McConnell is doing nothing to implement any deal on the virus related legislation. So Trump could come in and start issuing Executive Orders, or at least pretending to, and promising all sorts of tax cuts and breaks he will of course never do, all in front of an adoring audience at his club. Yes, you have been treated to another Trump carny show con, obediently brought to you and covered in depth by the TV networks. It is hard to imagine such depths of deceit and manipulation, but that is what the Republicans excel at. The story should be, that Trump illegally has ordered a reduction of unemployment benefits, and the defunding of Social Security, via the cut in payroll tax. it will be up to Biden to hammer away at this fact, because the media will always go with the carny show.. “Do you want to trade in your Social Security for what’s in this envelope?”

I’m pretty disappointed with the editorial in the Washington Post that throws this crisis in the Democrats laps – again.

The whole crisis is being manufactured by McConnell and the Republicans. Remember how they shut down government a couple years ago at Christmas for a couple of months? Remember how many people were in danger of losing everything?

They have donors. Those donors want results. What better way to do it than to not negotiate in good faith, put everyone’s lives on hold and hollow out social security with these irresponsible payroll tax cuts. I don’t want my payroll tax cut. I want social security when I retire because the way the shareholders are gutting everything but the craps table that is a 401K, there won’t be any alternative by the time I hit that age.

Then the second Great Depression will be a realer reality with no FDR in sight.

So, stop that crap, WaPo. Put the blame where it belongs- with Republicans that are deliberately dragging their feet to make the President look like some kind of hero when he allows the unemployed to wreck social security and Medicare with no obvious benefit to anyone. Except Republicans who really think their base is that stupid.

  1. Thanks, RD. I lost sleep last night thinking about this. It is obvious that Trump’s goal, and that of his billionaire right-wing donors, is to eliminate Social Security and Medicare. Getting rid of every single vestige of FDR’s New Deal has been their fantasy for 80 years. One would never have thought then that it would be possible, but Far Right gamesmanship, voter suppression, plus broadcast media and now social media have conspired to brainwash the populace in a way that Orwell could have only imagined. Here is something listed online as a “White House Official Position”: “Social Security: Making changes to certain retirement plans will help workers better plan for their financial future.”

Does that not sound like something out of the most dystopian novel? Yes, they can learn to plan for no benefits after they retire or are forced to by their employers. Just like it was in the 1880’s. You might get your gold watch, but probably not, because gold is expensive, so maybe a box of cookies for you and your family. Then it’s live on your meager savings for a few months, and then live on the streets. You can plan for that by scouting out locations now.

And we can bet that there are millions of Trumpers who either don’t understand this, or do, but would rather get the liberals upset than save their own Social Security. Or maybe they think it is just a game, and he’ll put it back. I would tell them that it took decades of an immigrant wave, and then a Great Depression which put at least a a quarter of Americans out of work, plus a landslide in 1936, to get Social Security; and that it’s not coming back if it is removed. Why does Trump do this? Because he is a twisted and sociopathic sadist; plus the goal of his donors is to create an absolutely permanent underclass which has no power, no money, , and no ability to stop the Far Right from buying and cheating in every election. Any media efforts to “balance” this narrative, are inappropriate and cowardly. There is no “both sides” to it, not in real world terms.

    • “Cowardly” is a term which overestimates the moral character of our media.

The major media–“mainstream” as well as wingnut–is owned, and staffed at the upper levels, by rich people. They think, hilariously, that the Democrats are dedicated socialists who will jack their taxes through the roof if they ever get control of the White House and both houses of Congress, so they bias their reporting in favor of the GOP, at least unconsciously.

I don’t think they are cowardly; I think they are BOUGHT. 😡

    • All those republican dreams -or nightmares?, would start Civil War Part-II.
      No question about it.

  2. Well, a few people were talking about it on AM Joy:

    https://www.msnbc.com/am-joy/watch/clinton-says-trump-signaled-going-after-social-security-medicare-89810501912

There were also earlier discussions of the extra special challenges women, esp those of color, have to go through just to get in the game.

  4. I just saw the Washington Post headline you referred to. imagine that you are making $15 an hour, barely getting by. You are a good employee, and desperately need the extra money. You ask for $20 an hour. They offer you $15.20 an hour. You say that is insulting and demeaning to you. But you would be willing to discuss $17 an hour for the next year. Then the CEO comes in, and he slaps you on the back and says he will give you $15.60 an hour for three months, and also you do not have to pay the fees for parking in the company lot for now, though you will have to pay them later. You say that this simply is not enough. Someone writes an article which says that you are being unreasonable, and you just want to win; and then a TV interviewer says that you messed up and you should just take the 60 cent raise.because it’s better than nothing. Actually, that’s what Obama mostly did, but he was not desperate, so he would give Boehner 98% of what he wanted. Pelosi is trying to help people, and she needs our support, because the rich guys and their media will hang her out to dry.

    • EXACTLY… and this is why we are where we are today:

Actually, that’s what Obama mostly did
