    • Week-end Wrap – Political Economy – September 27, 2020
by Tony Wikrent Slouching toward denouement Capitulation Will Not Halt Trump’s Coup David Sirota, September 24, 2020 An important review of political events last week. Yoy may not agree with Sirota’s interpretation, but his analyses has proven correct repeatedly. Remember that Sirota accurately outlined the future course of American politics in his 2008 book […]

Things that make my blood boil.

The vaccines are in the pipeline in various stages of testing. The good news is that there are several vaccines using different technologies that look promising.

The bad news is that Annoying Orange wants to get it done by the time he has to face the voters:

Federal health officials, worried about shaky confidence in a possible coronavirus vaccine, launched a public campaign this week to try to reassure Americans that regulators won’t clear any vaccine that isn’t vetted for safety and effectiveness. But President Trump immediately demonstrated the difficulty of divorcing the issue from politics by asserting Thursday that a vaccine might be available “right around” Nov. 3, or Election Day.

Top Food and Drug Administration officials, in published articles and interviews, said they would approve a vaccine only after rigorous review and would consult an outside advisory committee — something that lawmakers and nongovernment scientists have been clamoring for. Agency officials insisted decisions will be based “solely on good science and data.” They got backup from Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious-disease expert, who told Reuters the FDA won’t be swayed by political considerations. He has said a vaccine might be ready by early next year.

But Trump, who has a history of leaning on, and sometimes abusing, government scientists, told Geraldo Rivera on Thursday, “I’m rushing it. I am. I’m pushing everybody.” He said he was focused on saving lives, not on winning the election.

Oh, NOW, Mr. “It is what it is” is focusing on saving lives, 150,000 deaths and 1 major economic crisis later.

I’ve got magic beans for the MAGA people out there. They will make your penis grow 2 inches a month. 🙄

Here’s the problem, even if the vaccine is in phase 3 trials today, at this very moment, you are still going to have to wait several months to determine how long the response lasts. We won’t likely know all the side effects until the vaccine has been widely distributed. But before approval, we need to know as much as possible for what to expect. That’s why Fauci says don’t expect a vaccine before early next year. That sounds about right.

Think of it this way: if you’re trying to determine how long the vaccine lasts and let’s say your lower boundary time point is 90 days, it will be impossible to get that data in before Election Day. And if you need to administer a booster shot, you need to know that too so you can decide who gets the vaccine first and who has to wait.

Pushing up the deadline is highly irresponsible. We all know why he’s doing it. It has nothing to do with saving lives and everything to do with saving his own substantial bacon.

What really frosts my crockies is his attitude towards the scientists doing all of the heavy lifting. It’s a common misconception among the MBA and Silicon Valley set that lab rats are just drags on the bottom line. When has a pharmacologist ever made a big sale? Come on, let’s be honest, it’s the executives and sales people who make it happen for the shareholders. Lab rats do what… exactly?

So just push them, the lazy bums. Do they think the rest of us live in their ivory towers too? Make them work faster and more productively. No more of this “trial and error” crap. We want trial and succeed.

I only wish I were kidding.

Slightly off topic: I once had to listen to an MBA at rival company wax poetic about a label change she made on a bottle of a popular pain killer. You’d think she’d discovered the secret to nuclear fusion. Of course she was duly compensated for this monumental achievement. Then she asked me what I did for a living:

Me: “Computational chemistry/drug design”

Her: “what’s that? Oh, do you have to work in a lab??”

We did not bond.

Anyway, Trump is going to think he deserves a Nobel prize for any vaccine. “They told me my understanding of retroviruses was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. No one understands sequences and mutations better than I do.”

You can almost write that script.

But if that vaccine isn’t ready by 11/3/2020, he’s going to blow a gasket. And it’s not going to be ready. Not only will it not be ready but there is still the strategy and logistics of who will get the vaccine first to plan. Who thinks the Trump administration is capable of creating a distribution plan when they couldn’t even implement the testing plan? And they politicized that anyway.

Biden should take a lesson from this and continue to point to the dedicated scientists who are doing the best they can with rigor and integrity.

Then when a vaccine does roll out, feature the bleary eyed lab rats that made it all possible and not their executive overlords.

Give them time to pull off this miracle. We all want to get out of the house. No one is wishing death on anyone.

  1. Trump always tries to create a false reality that he can sell, at least for the time he needs it. Then he just shifts to another. one and denies he ever said the first thing. So we can discuss and analyze the progress on finding a vaccine, but we can be certain that Trump will claim one just before the election, maybe three weeks before? The media will be agog, even though of course they should know better. Trump figures it will get him three points in the polls, which could be enough to win, given the electoral college and voter suppression. And if he wins, and a week later there is no vaccine, what does he care? He won. And all the reports and articles saying that Trump lied, that there will be no viable vaccine for months, won’t cancel half a line of his win, or wash out a word of it. “He tricked us” is the legacy he has carried his entire life, but it keeps working.

So as we all root and hope for a vaccine which works, people need to inoculate themselves against the snake oil which he is going to be selling, like the con men did at the county fairs. He demands a vaccine, and he will intimidate someone into saying there is one, or will be one, and he will make a special speech to the nation, announcing that we have won, it is a great day for America’; Pence smiling in adulation, Fox News declaring that he has won the election, the liberals who wanted everyone to die, have been defeated, all hail the glorious Trump. This i know will happen. The actual progress of workable vaccines is the part we don’t know, and certainly will not learn from him. If he wins, and then forces out a vaccine which is not foolproof, which kills millions of people, he’ll deal with that later, or not, since he can’t be removed from office.

    • Nah, Corona-chan will kick his ass and the GOP’s asses six ways from Sunday.

If only that could happen without so much innocent suffering and premature death. 😡

  2. MBA = Master of Bullshitting and Assholery 😈

  3. Trump would demand an early vaccine then react with anti-scientific venom if it didn’t work properly. He has zero appreciation for the complexity of the process.

  4. The Weekly Reminder: (North American Central Time)

The Magical Mystery Tour 8 PM – 9 PM. Host Tom Wood picks a theme for an hour of Beatles music.

Beaker Street 9 PM – 12 AM. Legendary host Clyde Clifford is having to take a few weeks off (myeloma; he’s 74). However, he expects the treatments to work, and he expects to return eventually. Meanwhile, Tom Wood will host Beaker Street as well.

If you can’t make Beaker Street live, the previous shows are available at https://beakerstreetsetlists.com/

Tonight’s show will probably be there tomorrow.

  5. We now realize why McConnell is doing nothing to implement any deal on the virus related legislation. So Trump could come in and start issuing Executive Orders, or at least pretending to, and promising all sorts of tax cuts and breaks he will of course never do, all in front of an adoring audience at his club. Yes, you have been treated to another Trump carny show con, obediently brought to you and covered in depth by the TV networks. It is hard to imagine such depths of deceit and manipulation, but that is what the Republicans excel at. The story should be, that Trump illegally has ordered a reduction of unemployment benefits, and the defunding of Social Security, via the cut in payroll tax. it will be up to Biden to hammer away at this fact, because the media will always go with the carny show.. “Do you want to trade in your Social Security for what’s in this envelope?”
