Elijah E. Cummings, a Democratic congressman from Maryland who gained national attention for his principled stands on politically charged issues in the House, his calming effect on anti-police riots in Baltimore, and his forceful opposition to the presidency of Donald Trump, died early Thursday morning at Gilchrist Hospice Care, a Johns Hopkins affiliate in Baltimore. He was 68.
The Post reports that he died after a procedure for a long standing condition. In all likelihood, he was already dealing with this condition when he delivered this message to Michael Cohen last May:
We will miss his no-nonsense yet compassionate voice.
Let’s hope Trump doesn’t say something inappropriate.

I was shocked to hear about this. From everything I have ever seen of him, Cummings was very intelligent, compassionate, and forceful. His final comments to Cohen were absolutely unscripted and very moving. It is a cliche, probably, but he will really be missed in the world.
Indeed, he will. Congressman Cummings’ death is a great loss to his family, Baltimore and the United States of America.
