Recap

Biden and Sanders are still in the lead. It probably doesn’t matter 18 months out. Only in America do we even care who our candidates are this far in advance.

Nevertheless, I’m starting to develop a preference. And the reason why this person is edging out the others for me is because of consistency in thought, word and deed. This person has probably always been an existential threat to the powers that be – on both sides. That’s why it was so important to start smearing early with something tiny and insignificant from the past. You know, do a Clintonesque makeover and blow a molehill into a mountain. It’s very important that the struggling working class dismiss this candidate’s words because paying too much attention and looking at the record of accomplishment just might start persuading the voters.

Here’s a clue:

As Michael Lewis pointed out in a recent podcast, Elizabeth Warren is the prime mover who got the Consumer Financial Products Bureau started. It is potentially one of the most important new governmental referees in decades. Its purpose is to stand on the side of consumers against the licensing agreements and fine print. It means that financial advisors have to disclose who they’re working for and that your student loans are held to the same rigorous standards as the safety of the toaster in your kitchen. In other words, it’s supposed to act as a brake on the incentives for financial institutions to take advantage of the unwary.

It’s been completely undermined since Trump took office and probably never fully supported by the Obama administration either. But she almost singlehandedly created it, got it funded and THEN ran for the Senate. And that was after her decade of presentations on the two income trap.

She has dangerous ideas and is bold and works her ass off. So of course, Dickhead in chief had to find probably the only think Elizabeth Warren has done wrong. A tiny toss away checkbox on a form years ago that she thought was merely a formality for some university diversity initiative.

She hasn’t even grabbed a pussy, declared bankruptcy, or collaborated with a foreign government to meddle with an election. It just goes to show you the power of the public bully pulpit that someone who has her finger on the pulse of how the rich and well connected are screwing the working class can be derailed by a checkbox.

Or can she?

Elizabeth Warren is the one to watch. She’s not letting stupid nicknames get in her way and she’s not blaming the victims of the last election. She’s in it for everyone.

Too bad she’s not from California.

Dickhead tweeted nervously yesterday. He seems worried about something.

Good.

Game of Thrones, season 8, episode 5- The Bells.

Overall, a pretty good episode. I would give it an 8. This is where Dany was headed. Anyone who had loved her and followed her through the years could have seen this from a mile away. With great power comes great responsibility. She has spent much of her years developing her powers but has been notably absent with the responsibility. I mean that literally. She rode off on her dragon when Meereen needed her most and was in no hurry to rush back. She likes being a hero, a savior, a messiah, but when it comes to taking care of the people and things that depend on her? She does and takes whatever she wants. Yes, she’s occasionally been benevolent but “dictator” has always been the undertone.

So when she torched King’s Landing last night because she was finally going to take what she felt entitled to, and no one was going to get in her way with their own wars and pleas for mercy or logistical considerations, she did what she wanted. Because she could. And because even one dragon was the equivalent to a nuclear arsenal. Why have all that firepower if you’re never going to use it?

I’ve loved Dany since the beginning. But she’s always flaunted her power. She’s always been single minded. It was always a matter of time before it all went to her head and she let her inner dragon out.

That being said, there were a couple things I didn’t care for in this episode. The fight between Euron and Jaime was completely unnecessary, boring AF and took away time from other characters. In fact, I would have liked to have seen more scenes of with Jaime’s final moments with Cersei. These two main characters should have had a little more time together to wrap things up. Putting smirking, smarmy Euron between them was unforgivable. I can only imagine that the actor who played Euron had a “minimum sword fight scenes” clause in his contract.

What a waste.

The other wasteful, but somewhat more understandable thing was how Jon was completely useless during the battle of King’s Landing. No one paid attention to him and he had trouble keeping his men from committing atrocities.

This makes sense in some ways. The fog of war and bloodlust can create its own kind of nuclear chain reaction. When you’re in it, when some of the army are not your guys, when they have their own motives, one rash decision leads to another and it quickly spirals out of control. The noise makes it difficult to give commands, too many people are acting at a primal level. It makes even the best of men powerless.

It was hard to watch that and to feel Jon’s frustration and horror. I kept waiting for him to turn it around. But it’s always been like this for Jon. He hasn’t had any magical weapons of mass destruction. His weapon has always been his heart, skill and honor. He’s just an ordinary man, not a demi-god and his resurrection now seems like a fluke. It certainly hasn’t helped him in any way.

I think the writers would like for us to see the contrast between Dany and Jon in this way. What can you accomplish when you don’t have access to a dragon? What are your limitations? And what other kinds of skills do you need to develop to compensate? Now that Jon has seen what a single dragon is capable of and how a whole city and its inhabitants can be reduced to a cinder, how can he let it exist? How can heart, skill and honor reason with a superpower?

But, unfortunately, most of this subtlety will be lost on part of the fan base the writers are dealing with. Commence the adolescent whining.

I’d like to see the director’s cut. What was left out, why did that fight between Jaime and Euron make it in when no one wanted it? Questions, questions…

Valor Morghulis.

We’re headed for a showdown here

Amy Berman Jackson just ordered the justice department to turn over all of the Mueller report including the redacted portions so she can decide if any of it can be used by Roger Stone in his case.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson in a one-paragraph order gave the U.S. attorneys handling the Stone case until Monday to provide her with portions of Mueller’s report that deal with Stone “and/or ‘the dissemination of hacked materials’” that were leaked during the 2016 presidential campaign to the detriment of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Jackson said she wants to review in private those blacked-out sections of the Mueller report as she weighs several motions from Stone’s lawyers requesting access as part of a larger bid to dismiss the case. Mueller charged Stone in January with lying to Congress and obstructing the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, with a trial in Washington scheduled to begin Nov. 5.

How long will it take for Trump to ask Barr to stonewall Judge Jackson? Has it happened yet? By the end of the day? By the end of the week? Start the clock.

*****************************

The senate intelligence committee is trying to subpoena Donald Trump Jr. My tinfoil antenna are telling me that Don Jr. is the fall guy. Everything Russia related will be blamed on him. He didn’t know any better. Everyone knows he’s as dumb as a post. Trump Sr. has been taking all these steps to protect his son blah-blah-blah.

🙄

Got any other hypothesis?

The only answer to Trump: Trust but Verify

Donald is very insistent that Mueller not testify before Congress. He says that after $35M and NOKA LUJON, that it’s over. Nothing to see here. Move along.

By the way, does Mueller have a security detail? Just wondering.

Now, Donald May be perfectly innocent, like he says, and there’s nothing more to say on the matter of Russia, national security risks and obstruction of justice. He may have no stain on his spotless reputation at all.

Life would be so much easier for all of us if we could only trust him. We want to think that he’s not a ruthless, unprincipled, uneducated and selfish man sitting on the most powerful arsenal the world has ever seen.

We’d like to believe that he wasn’t implicated in a coup in 2016 using the help of a foreign government. That would make those of us in Pennsylvania feel better about the integrity of our voting apparatus.

So, let’s presume innocence on Donald’s part.

But check with Mueller anyway to keep things transparent between all parties. It couldn’t possibly hurt an innocent man to have it all laid bare and to see all the cards everyone is holding.

It’s good to be the king

Emmet Flood wrote a letter tut tutting Mueller’s suggestion that Congress take up the matter of Trump’s obstruction of justice charges. Here’s the money quote:

“Because they do not belong to our criminal justice vocabulary, the [special counsel’s office’s] inverted-proof-standard and ‘exoneration’ statements can be understood only as politicalstatements, issuing from persons (federal prosecutors) who in our system of government are rightly expected neverto be political in the performance of their duties,” Flood wrote to Barr. “The inverted burden of proof knowingly embedded in the SCO’s conclusion shows that the special counsel and his staff failed in their duty to act as prosecutors and only as prosecutors.”

Ok. There you have it, people. Mueller didn’t indict the president (but probably wishes he had at this point) because the OLC ruling is that it is improper to indict a sitting president, presumably because he has less of a presumption of innocence than a private citizen. Pretty sketchy but that’s the foundation of Mueller’s decision.

But according to Flood, any alternative to indictment is political. And as PROSECUTORS, they can only indict or not indict, which goes counter to the OLC ruling.

Too cute by half.

If no man is above the law, then one of the two statements above can not be true. I’m going with Flood’s assertion. A remedy is baked into the constitution and as far as I know, the writers didn’t say anything about it being political.

So, you know, nice try Emmet.

Besides, Mueller is a Republican.

Has anyone scheduled an appt with Mueller yet? There’s a cancellation. Maybe we can move him up.

Bill Barrbarino

“Whuh?”

Congrats to anyone who got that reference.

I hope we can all keep a sense of humor in the days to come because when the former head of the FBI sends a scathing letter to the US AG accusing him of misleading the public it’s really not funny.

Plus, if Trump lays a hand on Hillary Clinton over some mythical email cache that never existed, there will be a bigger backlash than the the one that toppled Victor Yanukovych in Ukraine. There will be no replay of the Yulia Tymoshenko trials and prosecution no matter what Lindsay Graham wants. Don’t tempt us, Lindsay.

It just occurred to me that the reason why Nancy doesn’t want an impeachment is because what is going to come out is going to make the USA look like some second world developing country with a succession of corrupt dictators, instability and a shaky economic foundation. Too much of the world relies on a stable dollar. It could be the beginning of a catastrophe.

********************************

Bill Barr says he’s not coming to the House Judiciary hearing because he objects to being questioned by an experienced trial lawyer that Nadler has hired for the occasion. Just a reminder that it’s not a rarity for committees to hire outside counsel to do their questioning. It cuts down on the grandstanding and from what I’ve heard, it was done during the Watergate hearings.

In fact, it was done to Christine Blasey Ford last fall. That was notable in that the Senate chose to put the victim on trial, not the defendant. It was sort of an inversion if the more legitimate process but that’s the Republican Senate for you. They have power and they intend to abuse it.

Back to Barr.

Since Barr isn’t going to show up, why not see if Mueller can come? Oh, sure, he’s not scheduled until May 15. But I think it could be a real Perry Mason moment. Yeah, have Mueller clear up ambiguities and explain why the OLC ruling prevented him from charging Trump but how it didn’t stop him from accusing Trump of corruption that should be followed up by Congressional investigations and impeachment. (Mueller really wrote that. Incredible but true.)

So, get Mueller on the hot seat today. The surprise switch in witnesses will be riveting.

THEN dare Trump and Barr to fire the only honest Republican in Washington. Trump is counting on delays and stonewalling to prevent the sanitizing effect of sunshine from illuminating what this whole investigation has been about. I see no reason why the House has to cooperate with that when it the integrity of our elections and justice system are on the line.

Just do it.

**********************************

Mueller Q&A:

  1. Please explain what the OLC ruling is and how that affected your decision to not indict Donald Trump.
  2. Is Donald Trump Jr. indictable?
  3. Were you in the process of inducting Don Jr. when Barr asked you to deliver your report?
  4. If we could see what’s under the black redaction bars, would we feel alarmed about the safety and integrity of our elections next year?
  5. Is our national security threatened by Donald Trump’s actions?

Add your own questions in the comments.

I’ve gained some weight over the past 12 weeks. Most of it is water. My face is rounder. Looks like I just drank a 6 pack. I hate that especially because I haven’t had a drink since the first week of January. It’s mainly due to the steroids. But I have my last round 1 chemo infusion tomorrow. It seems to have done most of the job. Yay. I’ll have a two week break then another round of something else. So two weeks of some serious Austin Powers’ Elimination Complete pees.

The good news is I can still fit into the wide leg tan chinos I bought back in 1995. Apparently, they are back in style. Good thing I saved them. Saves money and all that.

Desperately need a vacation. (Like you have no idea) Taking suggestions for a weekender.

May Day Memories

Me, Beth and friends at Nanakuli Beach

I lived in Hawaii as a child. I flew there on a cold day in January. Well, cold in San Francisco anyway where our flight departed. My mom had dressed us up for the flight. Those were the days. I wore a wool jumper over my turtleneck and pink wool knee socks. She shouldn’t have bothered. It was a no fuss military flight where the “flight attendants” tossed our hoagies to us over the heads of other passengers.

When we got off the plane, it was warm and the air smelled like a greenhouse. A little string of faux pearls I had worn broke as I descended the stairs and spilled all over the tarmac. It was 2 am and I was too warm.

The next morning, my sister Beth and I woke to the sounds of kids playing in a pool. The sun was shining, the plants were weird and wool clothing was all we had. My mom must have wanted us to imitate the missionaries.

Beth and I stared out the window in despair. Our summer clothes were in transit. And it was hot. And the pool was so blue and cool.

One of the parents decided that something must be done so we walked to the local Wigwam Store in Waipahu to buy short muu muus that would become our temporary wardrobe. A green one for me, brown for Beth. There were also bathing suits, because, to be honest, after school, that’s all we were planning to wear.

We went to school where our teachers were mostly Japanese and we were expected to clean our own classrooms and serve lunch. No one complained. And a couple days a week, we had hula lessons. That was in preparation for May Day.

Beth and I knew nothing about May Day in Hawaii. It turns out to be a big deal with a queen and her court representing each of the islands. They sat on a platform covered with ti leaves and flowers while each class performed a hula in muu muus or carefully folded and tucked pieces of colorful cloth. My class’s girl dance was Down on the Beach at Waikiki. I think Beth’s was I Want to Go Back to my Little Grass Shack. The year after that, our dances got more authentic and were sung in Hawaiian. I played an ipu and danced on my knees.

Anyway, in my memory, it’s always a sunny day on May Day with a light breeze and the scent of plumeria, gardenia and awapuhi. All the keikis sing:

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
Garlands of flowers everywhere
All of the colors in the rainbow
Maidens with blossoms in their hair

Flowers that mean we should be happy
Throwing aside a load of care
Oh, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
May Day is happy days out here

Happy May Day Everyone!
