I love cloudy days and rain. If the weather would always be about 60 degrees and misty, I would be quite happy. But of course I live in a city where it is usually sunny, so of course it’s not the same as a place where it gets cold and damp for months on end. But cool weather is invigorating!
I mentioned the movie “White Mischief” once before. Not a great movie, but there was one great line in it. It’s about British emigres to Kenya, probably mostly in the foreign service, in the 1930’s. They are bored, sapped by the endless heat; and they drink and have sex with each other’s spouses. Sarah Miles plays one of the more wearily decadentt of them. Finally, she gets up one morning, up, looks outside, says, “Another f______ beautiful day,” and shoots herself.
I was just musing, that if Hillary had refused to release her tax returns during the campaign, the media would have attacked her every hour. We would have seen headlines like this: “Clinton brazenly refuses to release taxes.” “What is Hillary Clinton trying to hide?” “Clinton must release taxes immediately, or withdraw from race.” “Hillary thinks she is above the law.” “Republicans say that if Clinton does not release taxes tomorrow, they will seek to have indictments filed against her.” “Is it too late for Sanders to enter race as Independent?” “Hillary’s history of sneering at rules and norms.” “The most unethical candidate ever? Clinton claiming her taxes are under audit, but it’s a lie.” “Clinton drops to 8% in polls,as Democrats decry her refusal to show taxes.”
Exaggerations? Hardly. And yet this is now one of the least of the Trump issues. The media let him get away with it. The media never lets the Democrats, particularly Hillary Clinton, get away with anything, they grind them and her into the ground, never let the story go. This in a nutshell is what is terribly wrong with our political discourse.
Republican overall strategy seems clear: Delay everything. Fight subpoenas. Let everything to to the courts, which will take years, Hope for the Supreme Court to affirm absolute executive power. If they don’t, delay some more, just like the states ignored various courts throwing out the vote suppression laws passed by the Republican legislatures. The real constitutional crisis is that this administration, and Republicans in general, have no intention of abiding by it. They’ve got the guns, even though we may have the numbers, to alter Jim Morrison’s line.
They might try that but it’s not going to work. There are too many investigations in NY state. The entire Trump organization is under criminal investigation in NY and I seriously doubt their courts are going to let Trump skate.
