Have you ever wondered why Republicans back Trump with their dying breaths? I have a hypothesis.
First, I want to second what I’ve heard so many people say lately. If Donald Trump is a national security risk, as it looks like he is, then it doesn’t matter much what his motivation is. He needs to be removed from office ASAP. We can sort out the whys later.
And it is obvious that the ideas he has floated lately, like pulling us out of NATO, would be a catastrophic blow to the EU, leaving it vulnerable to East Bloc predators.
This sounds to me like a national emergency and Congress should be on top of it. You would think Republican Senators would want to look like heros here. But all we get is crickets regardless as to what Trump is doing.
Now, why is that?
It occurred to me that Trump and the Republican Senators are manufacturing a shutdown and having confirmation hearings as quickly as possible because they are running out of time. Mueller’s investigation is wrapping up soon and they need to zip the report when it’s ready. Bury that baby.
But why should the Republican Senate want to accelerate the US’s demise under Trump’s control? I don’t think it’s because they hate government. No, the US is still a giant cash cow and the free market has never been freer.
Then I thought about what Trump might be afraid of in Mueller’s report. Anything that damages his image is a huge problem. And what could be more problematic than having the whole world discover the extent to which Putin was willing to go to get him elected. It would call into question his legitimacy. He lost the election by 3million votes. I still can’t wrap my head around that. A few thousand maybe. But 3 million seems wildly improbable. I’m sorry, it just doesn’t make statistical sense to me.
Here’s where I think Trump and Putin have Republicans by the short hairs. If Trump is illegitimate, then isn’t it likely that some of the Republicans who ran that year and won are also illegitimate?
Like Pat Toomey from Pennsylvania for example? If the Russians were able to manipulate the vote for Trump, did they also guarantee a Republican Senate and House?
At that point, McConnell’s actions seem explainable. And maybe Ryan’s as well.
Now that I think about it, was that $2 trillion tax cut intended to cripple us? You know, like the way we made Russia spend all that money in the 80’s during the Cold War?
So anyway, that’s where I’m going. They are protecting Trump because they have to protect themselves. The longer they can keep the truth buried, the better. Even if it means keeping a national security threat in the Oval Office and inches from the nuclear football.
Just sayin’.

Agree with your hypothesis.
So many other possibilities. Cambridge Analytica’s playbook was to dredge up past and blackmail politicians. I am going to say #theAsset is doing that with many R senators/reps. I have also mentioned at the number of Bushies running to help this administration. I say they are doing it to save the R Party. And, from a Republican point, they are getting everything they wanted in wholesale, taxes, judiciary, even the SCOTUS, hallowing the government. Why would they stop their binge? They just want to run the clock for the next two years.
I’m going to call him “the asset” from now on. Makes the point and-added bonus-sounds like asshat!
RD, you make a good argument, as always. What concerns me re legitimacy is the American people. Do enough of us care to do something about it, which at this point looks like screeching at Congress, for whatever that is worth. The longer the shutdown goes on, and if other agencies are also shutdown under the cover of his stupid wall, do we have the ability and the means, even if we have the will, to take back our country? The GOP has screwed us royally and done so with glee. They control too much, and care too little.
Also, I am really interested to see what happens to May today. Wasn’t Brexit also engineered by Putin? If we go down, Britain goes down, the EU goes down, will China and Russia duke it out for the spoils or just divide it all up? Neither of those regimes is people friendly. Yesterday, i heard Chris Christy say that if he were dump, he would use the NYT article re his threat to national security as proof that the FBI is out of control and out to get his magnificence. I mean WTF! His followers eat this shit up with a spoon.
Something has got to give soon. I want that to be McConnell.

lol state of the union is that it is shut and people are forced to work without pay. What else is he going to talk about? I wonder forcing him to confront this ridiculous picture may have been better? IDK.
Best comment I’ve seen on this no state of the union while gov’t is closed:
Q. What do you do with a child having a temper tantrum?
A. Take away his TV privileges.
Not enough resources to protect the #theAsset since much of the government is shutdown. Good letter.

RD, that is well stated. I do think that some of these Republicans are compromised. But of course there are others who simply are so blindly partisan, that they would rather have Trump for another 50 years, than one year of Hillary or Pelosi. They despise Democrats and have contempt for them. They and their voters will never change. This is not the 1950’s, politically. Scalise, Meadows, Jordan, Hyde-Smith, Blackburn, they are very ignorant, very stupid, and very much hate democracy. So they’ll keep supporting Trump, because they agree with him on most things. There are a very few of the Congressional Rs who do not agree with him on all things, but they prefer the alternative, which is Democrats calling the shots. I think that one really has to confront the fact that there is no :moral compass for most of the Republicans, they are what they are. The party has cheated in various ways to win national and state elections for at least 50 years; and 2016 was just a further extension of it. It is their modus vivendi, and they would not think of giving it up.
They are traitors, of course, but they would never see it that way. Imagine, the soon to be AG, someone who is considered “an establishment Republican,” wrote recently that there was much more cause to investigate the Clinton Foundation, and the proven hoax “uranium deal,” than collusion with Russia in the last election. This is what they have devolved to, or maybe that is too generous, maybe they had just hidden it better in the Reagan and Bush eras. Can you imagine Barr calling for an immediate DOJ investigation of the Clinton Foundation? He might do it; it would garner much news coverage, and the Fox people would cheer wildly. Among the various distractions and deflections which they want to create, investigations of the Clintons, the FBI, the DOJ, would be ideal for them. The contemptible Lindsey Graham signaled it in his opening remarks yesterday.
I have been screaming into the wind, go after that motherfucker McConnell and Ocasio-Cortez delivered today and they are all talking about it. There is nothing stopping him from bringing the bill to reopen for a vote. People need to know.
RD, you -knew- about this? It’s part of the background of facts I relied on My Very Smart Friends to hold for me. Surprising to see this knowledge surface among the universal ignorance that helped elect Dump.
(one women said re: my BF of as many years as the average American marriage & me, after an intense argument on regulated monopolies, “Don’t you guys have any fun?” We looked at each other, puzzled, and said “But this -is- fun”.)
2 trillion nobody who got it wanted or needed. All of the Rs are complicit. Most in the top should be investigated.
I think Merkel (pink suit?) notices his gesturing and leans over to see what is going on…

What?! Did you say weakening of America? I wonder who is whispering in his ears? I firmly believe at this point that the campaign promises were crafted such that they WOULD weaken America, it was by design and I wonder who gave him these ideas. Taxes, tariffs, gutting the state department, dysfunctional foreign policy wrt NATO and other, immigration which goes to the heart of the IDEA of America (‘we are all immigrants’), now the shutdown, chaos everywhere…
Republicans are complicit.

I think Lawrence told us the top Republicans who voted not to block lifting of sanctions on Deripaska’s businesses on this yesterday. Everytime there is a big Russia item like this, show the names and faces of these motherfuckers on TV again and again.

Someone should put all this in one place under the heading ‘Weakening of America’:

This is not legal to force these people to work when they are not paid (or funds to pay them is not appropriated).

He is going to run the government like he ran his businesses. He even said yesterday that things were going pretty well despite the shutdown. He will order furloughed people willynilly to take care of business even when it is not legal. More chaos.
Watch!
He is bringing a few hundred workers back to process farm subsidies which he triggered with his stupid tariffs. But air traffic controllers can go to get hell. This is about weakening America.
