Everyone can celebrate Christmas. The vast majority of us get the day off. So enjoy it and if you are anywhere where the staff doesn’t get the day off, tip them generously and be especially accommodating and friendly.
I have a Christmas challenge. What are the ingredients of a Russian Kahlusion? BiFF gave me a couple of killer ideas. Killer as in I would be semi comatose after one. Two obvious answers are Russian vodka and Kahlua. But that’s the base. Give it your best shot.

1) Left me thinking if they had not agreed to a plea deal with Agnew, instead prosecuted him to the full extent of the law, it would have been better for the country, maybe even prevented a trump from rising to the presidency.
2) They better not make the same mistake with trump and his minions.
3) Prosecutors had salacious stuff about Agnew but never planned to release any of it to the public.
4) Compared to these idealistic Republican prosecutors, Starr looks like scum for having gone after the salacious (and consensual) stuff with BC.
5) People like Ezra Klein tweeted about ‘Slow Burn’ but to castigate Bill Clinton about his consensual ‘piccadillos’ and not Nixon. How surprising?! (not)
6) The overwhelming thought after listening to this podcast is how history repeats itself, down to the everyday Republicans and their Congress critters of today supporting trump.

I was reading about Dickens’ story “A Christmas Carol,” the other day. It was written in 1843, which was the Early Victorian Period. We sometimes tend to see stories through the prism of our own era; but in that period, there were many English businessmen, bankers, landowners, who had not the slightest sympathy for the poor. Scrooge was not an outlier. Yet Dickens wrote this timeless and emotionally affecting story even then. I always tear up at it, so that I mostly have only watched the Mr. Magoo version, which is actually quite good.
Scrooge of course does not just suddenly repent, or see things in a new way; he is visited by ghosts who show him what very few people ever are allowed, or allow themselves, to see. He sees himself as a lonely orphan, and then as a hopeful and cheerful apprentice. Then perhaps out of his own fear of sinking back into poverty, he is seen succumbing to the lure of money; and losing his true love as she sees him change. Then the next ghost allows him to see he another part of the world, in the loving but desperately poor Cratchits. What self–satisfied, self-improvement-spouting Victorian ever cared to actually feel what it was like to be impoverished? And then Scrooge sees a time after his death, where he is unloved. unmourned, and thieves steal all of his fancy brocades. Which of us, given that opportunity to see backward, to see other lives in the now, and to see beyond ourselves, would not gain humanity? And that to me is the essence of the story. beyond Dickens’

And this almost inevitably leads one to ponder someone whose name would best not be mentioned during the holiday season. Worse than Ebenezer Scrooge ever was, he has stolen from everyone all his life, while sneering at them for what he sees is their weakness. No ghosts come to try to save him. Maybe Scrooge saw no actual ghosts, maybe
they were the emanations of his own conscience. But this other person never had a conscience. He paid his son’s $7 Boy Scout dues out of others’ charitable or slush fund donations. He started a fake university which was set up only to bilk the foolish. He will persist, maybe even do worse damage, until his grave. There is no antidote to him but a wiser populace which finally figures out in immense numbers, what an evil and soulless person he is, as are his lapdogs and lackeys. England eventually reformed many of its harsh policies, though it took many decades. America was just as bad, then suddenly became better; now is worse again, as Republicans try to destroy every vestige of the New Deal, and go back to a time which the Scrooge of the story’s beginning would have been very comfortable in, and which this real life nightmare figure is doing everything he can to create again.
However, the reactionary McDucks would be helpless without all the non-rich reactionaries to back them up.

For people to admit they are wrong they need to first come to the realization that they are wrong. The people who support Trump and his immoral policies are quite alright with being bad people primarily because their fear level of people who look a little different from them or speak a different language has been cultivated for decades. If anyone wants to know why they are so afraid of brown skinned people then all you have to do is watch the movie New Jack City and that pretty much tells you everything. I suspect this came from Cohen’s cooperation with Mueller… didn’t Mueller say Cohen provided evidence that was core to his investigation in the sentencing hearing? But overall, removing someone like trump should not be this hard. Everyday, something more corrupt, something more lawless. But listening to Maddow’s podcast The Bag Man, you realize how difficult it is to get these mfers. even when the party they belong to cooperates and takes the initiative, which is not the case here.

I happened upon an interview with Hillary done in October by Christine Amanpour, who is very smart, and very respectful of Hillary. All I can say is that Hillary is smarter than any other political figure we have. She is also very aware of the evil inherent in the current Republican Party. And that is why they tried to destroy her for 25 years, because she would not let them get away with what they did under Obama. They might have stymied her as President, but it would not be because she would not fight them all the way.
And Ms. When They Go Low, We Go High, might indeed be a very fine person, but there is no way that she deserves to be admired more than Hillary Clinton. And Ms. Give Away Lots of Prizes To The Studio Audience, is also admirable for what she has accomplished, but it’s still not close to Hillary. And Mr. There Are No Blue States, There Are No Red States, is a fine person as well, but his unwillingness to fight the Republicans, is significantly responsible for where we are now, and all the damage that is being done. But then our country never much liked intellectuals, or Democrats who tell them that there is a vast right wing conspiracy. No matter whom we nominate next time, he or she will not be nearly as brilliant or knowledgeable or forceful as Hillary. And another eight years like the ones we had from 2009-2016, would of course be infinitely preferable to what he are having now, but it would not be nearly enough to fix much of anything; it would just be another interregnum where the Democrats were careful never to criticize the Republicans; where they took a series of timid steps, for which they were attacked relentlessly nevertheless; and which would end in another Far Right administration replacing them, to undo most of the timid steps they took. People failing to recognize how and why we got to this point, and who might have gotten us out of it, is the great tragedy of our political era. There might be one potential 2020 Democratic candidate out there who could be a great President, but there is probably no more than one; and at this point, I can’t even identify who it might be.
Of course I agree with every word of your comment, William. Today I read that Michelle bumped Hillary as most admired after 17 years and that Hillary’s approval rating is at an all time low, somewhere in the high 20s??? Doesn’t that make her lower than 45*??? How is that even possible? WTF is wrong with this country? Someone posted an article about our idiocracy. I didn’t get a chance to read it and now I can’t find it. If it illustrates that we are a nation of idiots, or that a horde of deplorable idiots elected the destroyer of my world, that would make sense….that or body snatchers, Russian of course.
