Hey, remember a few days ago when I told you about the election for the new PA17 congressional district that featured incumbent Democrat Conor Lamb against incumbent Republican Keith Rothfus? I’m going to be voting for one of them next week because my blue township has been pushed out of Mike Doyle’s district into this new not yet existent district.
Anyway, Keith Rothfus was the subject of one of “the president’s” recent tweets. Are you ready for this. Ok. Here it is:
He’s a nice guy is Keith.
He was so nice and “sincere” that he didn’t meet “the president” at the airport. He also didn’t go to the synagogue with “the president”. No, nice, sincere, Keith didn’t meet with “the president” until after the synagogue visit. Indeed, we wouldn’t even know about that visit in the tweet.
It’s almost like it didn’t even happen.
Keith put a press release on his campaign website. Here it is:
PITTSBURGH, Pa – Congressman Keith Rothfus (PA-12) issued the following statement after meeting with President and Mrs. Trump and Jared and Ivanka Kushner after they visited the Tree of Life Synagogue and the victims recovering at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
“As the Jewish community of Pittsburgh continues to recover from this evil attack, it is important to recognize the grief each of us is experiencing in our own unique way,” said Congressman Rothfus. “Everyone should be given the space to grapple with this tragedy in a manner that allows them to heal. I hope that as we work through this, we will resolve to be united against anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred. In the wake of this appalling attack, I thank President and Mrs. Trump, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Kushner, for visiting with and grieving alongside those affected.”
Gosh, that was sincere.
What both Trump and Keith failed to mention is that Keith has an A rating from the NRA.
So, to recap: Keith didn’t greet Trump at the airport, he didn’t go to the synagogue with Trump and appear by his side and he only met with Trump after the synagogue visit.
And he has an A rating from the NRA.
Has any reporter bothered to ask Keith why he didn’t make a joint appearance with Trump in Pittsburgh?

The convenient thing is that the Republicans are uniformly so awful, that one doesn’t even have to research their votes or background, if one has time constraints. They are all pro-NRA, anti-gun control of any kind; all for immense tax cuts for the super-rich, etc. They are part of an army of Trumps. And they will lie about everything, confident that they can dupe enough voters to get themselves elected; wherein they will vote straight Trump, and then come back in two years to lie again about what their positions are. In the old days, polling places had levers where one could just pull, and vote straight Democratic. Back in the early 1900’s, that worked very well for Democrats. It was said that recommending this kind of voting didn’t help inform the electorate; and so in many places, these levers are no longer available. But in this era, they would be quite useful, and very reasonable, since no one should vote for any Republican anywhere.
Surest bet was that a week before the election, stock market would shoot up. Wall Street loves Trump, desperately wants him to win. When the stock market and economy ultimately crash under Republicans, they will of course want Democrats to bail them out. By right now, they are living high, as in 2006.
Ok so now we all agree tRump is a Nationalist no doubts, none. Ya know the nod wink kind. So what dose that make his Base unwanted neighbors maybe?
Praise goes to Nicolle Wallace and/or MSNBC for not showing Trump’s campaign speech in the guise of a statement. He has created this “issue,” making up things, and getting hundreds of millions of dollars of free campaign time. The media is once again failing miserably, but at least it today’s threats and lies were not shown there, other than a brief clip. If Democrats do not win the House at least, or even lose a few close Senate races, Trump will smile and say, ‘Well, it worked.” How can most of the media be so willingly or stupidly complicit? Remember the Ebola scare in 2014, which they covered daily, and then somehow disappeared the day after the midterms?
I voted today.
I voted Democratic where possible. There were two minor state offices in which the Rethuglican had no Democratic opponent, but did have a Libertarian opponent. I voted for the Libertarian for those two offices.
One local office was uncontested, with only the Rethug incumbent available. (She is probably a very nice lady, but that merely would make her an honest dupe rather than a criminal and a traitor.) I simply refused to vote at all in that specific “race”.
VOTE like our country depends on it.

Keith Rothfus probably made the mistake of believing the media and thought Trump was too toxic to be associated with. That was the same mistake Al Gore made in 2000 when he ran away from Bill Clinton.

You do realize that the Tree of Life synagogue is actually composed of more than one congregation with more than one Rabbi, right?
Yes, yes, I’m sure he behaved in the presence of Ivanka and Jared and he’s been solidly pro-Israel. But you don’t know Pittsburgh and I, um, do. Because I live here and I’ve lived in Squirrel Hill. These are people and descendants of people who know anti-semitism. Is not just theoretical to them.
It’s not unusual for media to find one voice on the other side. It’s just hard to ignore the 70,000+ people who signed the Bend the Arc letter.
It’s sort of like climate change. The vast majority of scientists say that human beings are contributing greatly to the warming of the earth’s atmosphere, endangering all of us. But leave it to people like you who will believe that one flat earther scientist who says the opposite.
At some point, you have to acknowledge that you choose to reject evidence deliberately and it’s not because you don’t believe the evidence. It’s vecause you have been conditioned to dislike the speaker. So you kill the messenger again and again.

This is very important. Trump does nothing to quell growing Nazism. Today, synagogues were defaced. Trump says nothing. Nazis are emboldened. Because this rabbit said that Trump seemed nice, means nothing. He is not going to do anything about the rising tide of anti-semitism, and that is all that matters in this context. There are not two sides to everything, that is a lazy and very dangerous way to see the world. The rabbi was being polite and gracious, and that is it. And that Trump might have seemed considerate to him, does no one any good. As far as support of Israel is concerned, the Evangelicals see Israel as some kind of staging ground of the Rapture; they have no interest whatsoever in Jews, Judaism, or Israelis. Pence brought a defrocked “rabbi” of a messianic group which believes that only Christians can go to heaven, to give an opening prayer at his rally. This administration has viral anti-semites like Gorka and Bannon in its ranks. The media refuses to see any of it, in its anxiousness to pretend it is all okay, that there are always two sides to it.
