    • I’ve Never Known How To Say This
I’ve been writing online for 17 year or so, if you don’t include forums, in which case it’s 25 or so. And I’ve never known how to say this. We’re really fucked up. Really. We’re cruel to each other in ways that just aren’t needed. We have more houses than homeless; enough food too feed […]

An encouraging word from a presidential historian.

“’I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.’”

Hold hands, look both ways when crossing the street, take care of one another. We’ll get through this.

  1. This post made me tear up. I am a strong person and I have an escape hatch (so I think) but a lot of people are going through a lot of trauma right now because of the political realities in this country. Shame on the people who have perpetrated this on innocent citizens.

  2. RD, you may be thinking about Mike Beschloss. I did the same thing looking at that tweet. Wonder if he is related to Mike.

    • You are right that RD has confused Steven, who is a journalist, with Michael the historian. They are brothers.

  3. They have a suspect.

  4. It seems almost impossible that I could be shocked by anything anymore, yet the callous and horrific responses to this domestic terrorism action from GOP public figures to members of my own family and two long time friends is just appalling to me. What have we become? Hopefully, the arrest puts a halt to this nightmare.

  5. It is important to keep hope, and to try to change things. But unfortunately it is not like a movie where the clouds literally lift, and the happy people flock into the street to celebrate. The internal damage to the country is immense. The entire Republican Party is evil and corrupted beyond repair. When, if ever, the people realize that the problem is not just “hateful rhetoric,” but a entire party which wants to take absolute power over all aspects of life in this country, and make it impossible for people who oppose them to vote to change any of it, we might have a chance.

    • It’s important to remember that the current situation is the culmination of 50 years of effort by the Right. It didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t get fixed overnight. One or two election cycles aren’t going fix this – it’s going to be a long, hard slog.

On the bright side, James Madison was a very smart man and the Republic is actually quite a robust institution. Changing course will take a very long time, but restoring checks and balances can actually be done pretty quickly. I don’t think we’ll get the Senate this time, so judicial appointments are still going to be a problem

  6. Happened now in the last hour… something related young Black leaders event and most of the audience was Black. Wow!

    • Maybe FBI or other law enforcement should start profiling people who are at trump’s rallies.

    • What is wrong with these people? Really, what is happening here? If you know someone like this, and can have a conversation, please do and report back.

      • Pretty easy to understand: they love Big Brother. It’s the Two Minute Hate. George Soros is Emmanuel Goldstein.
