There will soon be a test of the principle that we Democrats can win the majority of elections, if our voters will only turn out. That has always been the case; and the Republicans know it, and have responded to it by suppressing the votes of minorities, doing relentless gerrymandering, relying on the inherent undemocratic nature of the Electoral College; and by stacking the courts to give them every advantage. And then they engaged the Russians to help them even further, by doing things that even we do not know the depth of.
The Republicans play everything like a no holds barred board game. The only goal is winning, by using whatever legal power they have. Democrats, for whatever reasons,virtually never play things that way. And on the rare occasions that they do, the media lambastes them unmercifully, until they back down and abjectly apologize. Further, the Republicans employ the tactic of picking someone for their voters to hate, making that person the poster man or woman against whom they can vent their hatred. People who are foolish enough to say that “if only the Democrats hadn’t nominated Hillary, the Republicans would not have had such an easy target,” conveniently forget that they made Carter, Dukakis, Gore, Harry Reid, Tom Foley, Obama, and a host of others into hated figures. Now they’re going for Maxine Waters. They’ll always find another, no matter who leads the Democrats in the Senate or House.
What Democratic voters need to do, is to try to ignore most of the endless surface noise and most of the media. Organize voters, and vote. We’ll find out if it is enough. We’ve been doing pretty well of late,although it is easier in special elections with a small turnout. It is going to be hard, because the Russians are going to be heavily involved, and the media always acts as dupes, wringing their hands about every made up or enhanced stories which they are fed. But if we ignore most of it, and are determined to vote and to get others to vote, we might be able to overcome it. In 2008, we won the Presidency and both Houses. But President Obama did not build on that, did not help the party at the state level, did not manage to convince his base of the absolute necessity of turning out in midterms. And worst of all, he let the Republicans in Congress roll over him in key instances. Maybe it isn’t his fault, maybe our democracy cannot withstand the actions of a dedicated group of evil and underhanded people who do not believe in comity or rules. I would have felt a lot better with Hillary Clinton as President in 2009, though, and I think we would be in better shape now. But here we are, and we still have the votes to win, if we can just turn them out. It will be a long, and slow slog, but there is no other rational choice.
Other presidents have lost midterms for far far lesser decisions and benign agenda. Yet we are fretting and sweating this out shows the extent of his and Republican evil. They will certainly try to fuck with it.
Dupes, shmupes. The owners of the media, wingnutty and “mainstream” alike, are amoral McDucks–or, to use the older and classier term. Malefactors of Great Wealth–who order their media outlets, subtly or openly, to favor the Rethugs so they can keep those Preciousss tax cuts.
