    • Interview Part 2: Politics Thru Climate Change
This second excerpt from my interview is more interesting and longer. This is the second clip from my interview with Ian Welsh (Ian blogs at ianwelsh.net). For this segment, we went on a wild ride discussing the big picture mess that is US politics and society more broadly. I asked Ian what might happen if […]

Keep the “faith”

WaPo’s big headline this morning is about the poor beleaguered Congressmen from the farm states who are trying to keep Farmers caught in a trade war from defecting:

MANKATO, Minn. — Many of the farmers who helped propel Donald Trump to the presidency fear becoming pawns in his escalating trade war with China, which threatens markets for soybeans, corn and other lifeblood crops in the Upper Midwest.

But Jim Hagedorn, a former GOP congressional aide and Treasury official running for an open House seat, says they should keep their faith in Trump.

“He understands just how important it is to these rural areas that we have these markets,” Hagedorn said in an interview at his campaign office. “Do I understand that the president has the prerogative to go out and negotiate? Of course I do. But I trust that in the end, he’s going to do everything possible to make sure that we help everyone in the United States, including our farmers.

Does he, Jim? Are you sure about that? Because he’s already indicated that there’s going to be some initial pain for long term gain but what is the goal here exactly?

I’ll believe he has the best interests of everyone in the United States in mind when he puts clothing imports from China on the tariff list. Let’s watch Ivanka take one for the team.

Notice the use of the words “faith” and “trust”. Evidence, proof of concept, long term goals, none of this is explained.

As others have said, this is Trump playing to his base. His base wants us to bash China. For some reason. It doesn’t matter that bashing China is unlikely to result in anything good and that if you’ve lost your job to China lately, it’s not the Chinese who are to blame. It’s your former employer who decided that your salary was making a dent in his shareholder’s bottom line. And that likely circles back to 401ks. Don’t even get me started on that.

There might be a trade imbalance. It’s probably going to get worse considering that we pulled out of the TPP and were unable to use our significant influence to make changes to it in our favor. That would have been the smart thing to do. But whoever said Trump was smart?

Ergo, the farmers get the pointy end of the pitchforks.

I’m starting a new training program today, oh best beloveds. Hopefully, it will be more suited to my disposition. I never thought I was the managerial type. I still don’t. But there may be a middle way where I can subtly encourage people to get stuff done. It’s going to be a four month training program. Not sure how that will affect this space. I’m predicting that I’ll always find time for snark, like right now while I’m on the bus.

Wish me luck!

  1. Good luck in your new position!

I will say that a lot of the problems in the GOP have come from mixing religion and politics. Faith and belief are for religion not politics. And trust has to be earned of which Trump has done nothing to earn any trust.

I said this in November 2016 and I will say it again: Trump supporters are just going to have to suffer the consequences of their poor choices. You certainly cannot reason with them.

    • It will be too spread out and the impact will not be felt by everyone who supported him, that is my fear. Meanwhile, he is pressuring Wray and Sessions to give Congress, Hillary’s FBI investigation docs, WTF! and his son in law, the Kush got 1.2 billion (BILLION) for his Manhattan building from somewhere. Who is watching that? Who cares about that?

  2. Hey, good luck with the training! You seem bossy enough to me. Joking! (I don’t know you enough). People say I am bossy but I never felt like I want to manage people. I have managed students and worked as a master my own universe but managing adult co-workers may be different (I have been avoiding pursuing that path in my current position).

  3. Infrastructure week! We learn little Kush is off the hook. He got his 1.2 billion for his Manhattan building. You have to appreciate the brilliance of trump in con/fraud/crook/looting in appointing little Kush as the Middle East peace envoy, right, right and him not working with the State and keeping Tillerson out, stroke of genius?! Media totally fell for it and reported it in all seriousness that he was really going to find peace, right?

  4. Good luck! I look forward to your posts.

  5. Huh. China started buying Brazilian soybeans, so Europe started buying American soybeans at higher prices than the Chinese were paying. Funny how that works. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trade-china-soybeans/as-u-s-and-china-trade-tariff-barbs-others-scoop-up-u-s-soybeans-idUSKBN1HF0FQ

    • Umm…I skimmed that article at least twice, and I didn’t see where the Europeans were paying higher prices than the Chinese had been paying.

    • Cohen got raided! LOL

  6. Best of luck, always, RD.
