    • Week-end Wrap – Political Economy – September 27, 2020
by Tony Wikrent Slouching toward denouement Capitulation Will Not Halt Trump’s Coup David Sirota, September 24, 2020 An important review of political events last week. Yoy may not agree with Sirota’s interpretation, but his analyses has proven correct repeatedly. Remember that Sirota accurately outlined the future course of American politics in his 2008 book […]

We’re living in the Upside Down

I’ve heard the Stranger Things reference to the Upside Down several times in the last 24 hours. For the current upside down zeitgeist let’s go to the tweets:

Well, it’s the end of the Olympics after all. Trump’s got a war to start.

Then there is identity confusion as liberals and neocons start agreeing with each other that Trump is f%#{ing dangerous:

Then there was apparently a Trump meltdown over the Schiff memo while some of us were sleeping. Susan Simpson says:

Hope there is instant replay.

Then there is this tribute to CPAC hypocrisy:

About the only thing that seems like it’s going well right now is the incredibly successful war that those pesky kids from MSD HS in Parkland, Florida are waging against the NRA. The NRA says it doesn’t need the rental cars and airlines and other companies that have run screaming from any association with it. There are plenty more companies that want to be its BFF. It doesn’t need all those other ones.

I think we’ve seen that movie:

    • It’s amazing that we can still find anyone who wants to teach.

But, of course, to the right-wing plutocrats and their minions, this is a feature, not a bug–they can only maintain their wealth and power if the masses are uninformed, misinformed, and disinformed. They want poor teachers, if they can’t shut down the public schools completely.

      • A poorly educated America is a weaker America, so Tsar Putin also likes the idea of ruining our public schools.

    • My favorite is Chump wants to offer bonuses to those teachers who will be packing. Next incentive will be points based. Rack up 5 kills gets a free movie day for what’s left of your class, 10 kills, that gets you a weekend at Disneyland. 25 kills, why you just earned yourself a Presidential commission for bravery and a years worth of free psychotherapy sessions for the life-long effects you’ll be suffering as you now too will qualify as a mass murderer.

  1. Looking around on the Internet and elsewhere, the conclusion is obvious and imminent. There is no defense against AR-15 types of weapons. Can’t blame the deputies who didn’t go in because they know there was no defense against that weapon. Then there is the argument that red flags were not given the attention they deserved. I say hindsight logic and maybe if that really is a concern, provide funding for staffing at school and in law enforcement to handle the volume — this is where waiting period and background check which should include talking to friends/neighbors and family (like they do for security clearances or government jobs) come into play. If you think that is overkill then you invariably end up saying why give access to such dangerous weapons to everyone in the first place. He may have been a troubled teenager but why let him get an AR-15 so easily? Everything comes back to this. Assault Ban Weapons idea (which worked when it was in play) and nothing less.

  2. Here is a link to sign petition to get Amazon to cut ties with the NRA

  3. “she” is of course that monster Dana Loesch. If she were taking a history exam, Loesch’s response would likely have scored an F.

“I ask, Who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers. But I cannot say who will be the militia of the future day. If that paper on the table gets no alteration, the militia of the future day may not consist of all classes, high and low, and rich and poor; but they may be confined to the lower and middle classes of the people, granting exclusion to the higher classes of the people.”
Mason’s speech was about class, it was about military service, it was about the power of the United States government to require military service. It had absolutely nothing to do with an individual right to own assault rifles simply because you feel like owning an assault rifle. Even if you believe in an individual right to own guns, even if you believe that is what the Second Amendment guarantees, it is clear that this particular quote was not about that.

A well regulated militia and the 2nd amendment do not mean gun rights for everybody at all (as I anticipated reading Mason’s words, confirmed by the article at the link).

    • BTW, saw this article on Emma G’s twitter TL. These kids are doing their homework. So awesome!

    • I hope i can remember the salient points of this article next time one of my gun owning friends brings up the 2nd. My reading of the amendment never got me to their interpretation, so i was always confounded by their specious logic.

  4. That NRA sign tho….shame when the pushers are afraid of their own product.

  5. The “militia” phft! I keep seeing Chump trolls and gun nutz going on about needing to be prepared for when “they” come for us, or when “they” turn on us.
Ummm…if by “they” they mean the government, sorry, but I got news for you; there is NO amount of weapons and ammo you could possibly possess which would allow you to successfully take on law enforcement. And the idea you believe that day will ever arrive, means you’re paranoid as hell, and shouldn’t be owning guns anyway, because you’re waaaay too dangerous to be around normal people. So if you really believe the country is THAT bad, maybe YOU should be the ones thinking about leaving it!

    • You could take on the Broward Cowards with an unloaded pea-shooter.

      • Niles and his ilk think the real world functions like a B-grade action flick.

Unless Niles has actually been in the same situation as the officer in question–and performed better, in spite of being seriously outgunned–what right does Niles have to condemn that officer?

Real cops don’t have Plot Armor available to them.

Also, one of the main reasons our cops in this country tend to be somewhat more trigger-happy than their counterparts in other advanced nations is that they are the most likely to be outgunned in a fight with one or more criminals. This can lead to an understandable “shoot first” mentality.

      • I feel sorry for the Broward County sheriff’s department. They have to live with the consequences of their inaction. But they’re a civilian police force going up against a military style assault weapon.
No one came out of this horrible incident for the better including the shooter who CLEARLY had mental health and emotional health issues for a long time that weren’t addressed. As evil as his actions were, I am sure he didn’t grow up to be a mass murderer and spend the rest of his life in jail. What was done to him by our shitty mental health services for children is just as bad.
Have some compassion, Niles. It will make you feel less angry with the wrong people.

      • There’s no doubt in this instance every one of the adults that was supposed to protect these kids failed. From the guy who didn’t go into the school, to the FBI not following up on tips, to the NRA who spends every second of every day buying off politicians to keep gun control from passing, to the Orange Adolph who accepts their $30mil in bribes to repeal the few regulations we DID have.
I know the FBI and Broward police have accepted their part and apologized, you let me know when the others do the same!

    • Great comment,trist!

    • Those people are idiots. Have they never watched a SWAT team descend upon a drug dealers haven where the drug dealers are loaded to the gills with every kind of weapon available? The drug dealers always end up being either killed or surrendering to the SWAT team.

  6. Oh dear…it seems that NRA boss Wayne LePew–er, LaPierre–did not register his name as an Internet domain.

Someone else took advantage of that oversight.

    NSFW! 😈

    • Omg, I’ll bet those pesky kids from MSD HS had a hand in this. It had to be high schoolers. Look at all the “Vocabulary for College” words are in that post.

But the pegging reference makes me think wonkette was in on it too.

    • I couldn’t make it past this first part: “Are you an industry that feeds off of human misery? ”

      I just started cracking up!!

  7. Madoka damn the gun makers, the NRA, and their Moron Labe base for making kids think about things like this. 😡

  8. Why are the Democrats determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory? The California Democratic Party refuses to endorse Diane Feinstein? Hey, sexist, ageist pieces of shit, she’s the co-sponsor of the bill that banned assault weapons!!!!!!!!
    Oh Christ, I give up.

    • Sorry but the old guard needs to go.

    • I think she will end up winning regardless. But I have not forgotten her basically telling Hillary to get out of the race in 08… she doesn’t seem to like people telling HER to get out of the race.

      • Not sure, that is what she did in 08. I thought she was one of the few that stood by Hillary to the bitter end. Pelosi on the other hand….

    • What is happening in CA? Right when we need experienced politicians for what is going on in the country. How many old fossils on the men side are in the Congress in both parties and why is she getting this treatment?

      • What is happening in CA? They’re getting Sandersized.

        • Are they Russians posing as Bernie Sanders supporters? Causing chaos and disunity on the Dem side is the obvious next step for them. Why are people falling for this? During the campaign I remember one woman harassing DF berating her about retiring yet they are asking a 80 year old incompetent to run in 2020. We have no time or patience for these Bernie bros and their hoes, domestic or foreign.

    • Its’ the work of the bernouts. They want their guy and as far as guns go Bernie was just caught lying about the number of people that don’t have to have background checks or something. All this is going to do is solidify the support Feinstein has in the state.

  9. Hypocrisy, thy name is Chump Trolls. Remember how they felt it was their civic, nay, their constitutional duty to boycott the NFL and see it go under, because of those…..how did they put it, ungrateful son’s a bitches? Yeah, so now those dearest of souls are attacking the Parkland kids for boycotting companies doing business with the NRA. Asking what right do THEY have trying to harm American businesses. I would say, they have the same rights as you, but I know you wouldn’t agree with that. Because in YOUR world there is “us” which is everything in perfection, and there’s everyone else, who shouldn’t have any rights at all. Must be soooo wonderful to be you.

  10. So this is how you can tell gun nutz from mere Chump Trolls…

“Gun owners turn on Donald Trump over plans to bring in tighter restrictions”

Gun owners love their guns above all else, and will ALWAYS choose them. This must account for Chump dropping in his approval ratings again. He’s back down to either 38% or 35% depending on the poll. Look for that to drop further the longer he pretends to WANT to do something regarding gun safety.
We’ll know what his rock bottom numbers are, and I do mean “bottom” once he loses all those types, and has NOTHING left but the ones permanently attached to his ass.

  11. Trump campaign emails photo of Parkland survivor, asks for donations

President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign used a photo of a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, shooting in an email Saturday that asks its recipients to donate money to the campaign. The email contains a photo of 17-year-old Madeleine Wilford in a hospital bed surrounded by her family, Trump and the first lady. The President visited Wilford on February 16, two days after the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which left 17 dead.

Have I mentioned today that this piece of shit, is a piece of shit? Because he is.
