    • How To Be Happy In Bad Times
Last year the New York Times had a profile of two people marrying: one 98, the other 94. They met in gym, they’re both active and happy despite their age. What is their “secret?” “People always ask what it is that keeps us young,” Mr. Mann said. “Of course, one part of it is medical […]

Two headlines

These were the headlines at The Washington Post this morning:

Can it happen here? Of course it can. It already has. This picture was taken by Jacob Riis in 1914 before there were social safety net programs:

Those are homeless children in New York City.

We are returning to the beginning of the 20th century. The nuclear arsenal is getting a make over by taking food and heat away from children. This will happen in a land of plenty.

I might be a bleeding heart liberal but at least I’ve got one.

“At this festive season of the year, Mr Scrooge, … it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands are in want of common comforts, sir.”

“Are there no prisons?”

“Plenty of prisons…”

“And the Union workhouses.” demanded Scrooge. “Are they still in operation?”

“Both very busy, sir…”

“Those who are badly off must go there.”

“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”

  1. It will get worse and it is without question that Democrats have to win in 2018 to stop this fucking malevolent incompetent.

    • What kind of sick person gets off on depriving children of food, housing and heat? There’s no redemption for that kind of heartlessness. They’re CHILDREN. They should *never* be used to score political points.

      • They are ‘unwanted ‘ children from these mfers POV. In fact these children and their future scares them. Trump and his base including Rs in Congress are sick!

  2. Venezuela was one of the wealthiest nations in South America. Then socialist Hugo Chavez took over.

    • I recommend How Democracies Die to you. The history of Venezuela is not as black and white as “Hugo Chavez was a socialist”.
Hugo Chavez was an autocrat and a demogogue.
The distinction is likely lost on you. Fine. Whatever.
      🙄

    • You know, Niles, I only let you comment here because you and BlizzardofOz serve a useful purpose. But honestly, you can’t provoke me anymore. I don’t even care what stupid shit you believe. It rolls right off of me. You’re just pixels on a screen and with a flick of my wrist, I can make you disappear.
I’ve got my sights set on bigger things. But please, by all means, be our own little specimen so we can dissect the way you think.

    • Oh, look, Niles! It’s a cute girl from a Japanese video game!

Now your day is ruined. 😈

  3. And, in other news, the Administration wants to privatize the ISS (in the process ignoring the fact that it’s, well, International). I’m thinking that he’ll convert it into the latest Trump-branded hotel – or perhaps, in honor of his grandfather, the first zero-G bordello.

  4. What happens when nearly anyone can create lies which only experts–or maybe not even experts–can distinguish from truths?

This technology makes Orwell’s Ingsoc Party of Oceania look like a gaggle of mischievous grade-schoolers. 😮

  5. So instead of Food stamps, they will get food box! I bet the trump nincompoops got this idea from Puerto Rico and the company they contracted to supply food, some really inexperienced (at this point this is feature not a bug) contractor who only distribute a few 10s of thousands when the expected number was like a few millions. So this is pay for play straight out and corruption. It is not even big government. It is corruption!! Read that again!
