    • Meritocracy, What Meritocracy
From Saez, Chetty, et al So, unless you think that genetic potential is that unequally distributed (and can explain eras where this chart did not apply, as in the post-WWII decades), you can pretty much forget “meritocracy.” Meritocracy is just a way of saying “we test for the things the middle and upper class has […]

Giving Season

Granny Starver Ryan is planning to retire next year but that doesn’t mean the legislation he and his party passed won’t have an effect on less fortunate Americans.

Think about making a recurring donation to a charity or NGO that services the poor. Or consider donating to Puerto Rico hurricane relief at Somebody Help Us.

My choice is Feeding America. You will be surprised at how far your small recurring donation will go to make sure no child in America goes to bed hungry.

If you can’t give money, give your time. I have volunteered at my local food bank stocking shelves, preparing emergency food packages and helping clients fill their shopping baskets. Food banks help those who may have come up short in food stamps or are otherwise facing a food emergency. Get to know these people and fill your heart with compassion, not judgement.

Think out of the box.

Solstice is coming.

“Sire, the night is darker now

And the wind blows stronger

Fails my heart, I know not how

I can go no longer.”

“Mark my footsteps, good my page

Tread thou in them boldly

Thou shall find the winter’s rage

Freeze thy blood less coldly.”

In his master’s step he trod

Where the snow lay dinted

Heat was in the very sod

Which the Saint had printed

Therefore, Everyone, be sure

Wealth or rank possessing

Ye, who now will bless the poor

Shall yourselves find blessing.
