The War on the Blue States.

It’s like the second civil war.

The Tax “Reform” bill is going to hit New York State particularly hard, especially in the NYC metro area where housing prices are steep and property taxes are stratospheric. Many of my former coworkers got out of NY/NJ when the small molecule R&D industry went belly up. You can’t live in the area without a very good paying job. And even that will only get you what I have in Pittsburgh on half the salary. So, I feel very concerned for the people who are left who are still struggling to make it on contracting positions, paying for their own health insurance and getting stuck with state and local taxes they won’t be able to write off. It is essentially double taxation on their income.

There was a tweet yesterday that summed up what this is like for those of us not stupid enough to vote for Trump. It was something like the writer wishes we had a parliamentary system because what is happening right now us we have a minority government wrecking the country and the majority have to stand by and watch helplessly until the next election.

It’s even more unfair to the blue states because they have taxation without representation. The country is divided on regional lines and when some redneck in Mississippi has more electoral weight than some out of work STEM professional in NY, the sting is particularly vengeful and stupid.

My dad used to say, “save your Dixie cups because the south is going to riiiiiise again.”

Well, it’s risen. But it’s just as wrong, callous and greedy as it’s ever been. But this is how the ultra wealthy gets its way. It divides us against ourselves and then grabs the spoils of war.

Forgot to mention that all of these politically motivated hits on the blue states have big consequences. The quality of life in the blue states is better than in GOP states. That’s just a fact. It can’t be disputed. These states have a responsibility to their residents to maintain already existing infrastructure and teach already existing children. The idea that breaking local governments is somehow going to please the working and middle class voters in these states is bizarre and wishful thinking. They’re the ones who are most likely to be hurt by this when their schools fall apart and their bridges rot. That’s going to happen everywhere including places like Pennsylvania. No one is going to benefit from this.

Taxpayers are waking up to this disaster already. They know who is doing it and who is going to make out like bandits. The only way Republicans can possibly get away with this is if they are very confident that the will pay no electoral consequences even if overwhelming majorities of people turn out against them.

Everyone, regardless of party affiliation should be very concerned with that possibility. Because if it turns out a Trumper wakes up next year and decides to stop this crazy thing before it gets to the point of no return, there may be no way to reverse it.

MSNBC cut ties with Sam Seder yesterday after a tweet he made about Mike Cernovich turned up criticizing the latter’s excuses about rape.

Let us review what Cernovich has said about rape, shall we?:

Seder explained Cernovich’s “smear involves the willful misinterpretation of a tweet that I posted in 2009” that was criticizing rape apologists, but MSNBC sided with Cernovich, who previously asked “Have you guys ever tried ‘raping’ a girl without using force? Try it. It’s basically impossible. Date rape does not exist,” and claimed “A whore will let her friend ruin your life with a false rape case. So why should I care when women are raped?”

Ahem, it is possible to rape a woman without overt force. Well, I guess in the strict physics definition of the word force, F=ma, all it really requires is a large mass using gravity. For example, if you’re 5’7″ and weigh 120lbs soaking wet and someone who is 6’6″ and almost 300lbs is laying on top of you, then yeah, that’s force enough even if the guy isn’t holding a knife to your throat or slapping you around or tying you up. Does anyone disagree?

Ok, then. So why is Seder out of a job? Can someone explain this to me?

Mueller has subpoenaed Trump’s account records from Deutsche Bank. The thot plickens.

  1. I saw an alarming stat recently that said by 2045, there will be 70% representation in Congress from only 30% of the country and the 15 or so metropolitan areas that are high density population centers will be screwed with only 30% representation. Yes, electoral college is a problem and it should be made easy to get rid of a rogue and traitorous president.

  2. Sam Seder was obviously being sarcastic. That’s just ridiculous.

  3. “It was something like the writer wishes we had a parliamentary system because what is happening right now us we have a minority government wrecking the country and the majority have to stand by and watch helplessly until the next election.”

It is perfectly possible to have a minority government in a Westminster system. If the US actually had a Westminster system (where the majority party in the legislature “forms a government”), the 2016 election would have produced exactly the same result it did – the Republicans control the House, after all. And, of course, they could hold onto that for up to 5 years (or until Trump decided to dissolve Congress and call for a new election, whichever came first).

Be careful what you wish for (I think we’re all regretting Harry Reid’s decision to legitimize the invocation of the “nuclear option” for cloture on judicial confirmations, aren’t we?).

As for the Electoral College (and, by extension, the Senate):

Long term demographic trends do not portend well for the traditionally blue states. The three fastest-growing states in the Union are North Dakota, Texas, and Utah (each of which is growing twice as fast as California and six times as fast as New York). Some other reliably Red states aren’t far behind. Give it another decade or so and you may be damned glad the Senate and the Electoral College work exactly the way they do.

It certainly beats the Canadian system, where Senators are *appointed* by the Governor-General (who is, in turn, appointed by – God help me – the bloody Queen of bloody England) and serve until they either die, go bankrupt, are convicted of a crime, become a citizen of another country, or reach the age of 75. Nothing like having the upper house of your legislature appointed by the representative of a foreign head of state. Particularly when that representative (or the foreign head of state herself) can deny Royal Assent to the acts of your elected government and thereby reverse them (without any recourse to override).

As Dr. Dr. Mrs. Propertius (a proud Canadian and real, live political scientist (PhD #1)) is fond of saying, the American Constitution is “the most brilliant plan of government ever devised” while the Canadian system is “a barbaric anachronism.”

    • And yet, Canada has turned out so much better than the USA.

I make fun of Canadian winters, but Canada is lucky to be too Madoka-damned cold for cotton and other plantation crops, so they didn’t have the warped beginnings, whose malignant effects persist to this day, that we have.

      • My in-laws in Newfoundland would probably disagree with your assessment of Canada. Newfoundland infrastructure makes Mississippi look like Norway. The province didn’t even have public schools until the 1990s.

I do, however agree with your historical view about the malignant effects of the warped beginnings of our Republic. The only smart thing George Bush ever said was when he called slavery our “original sin”.

    • All good points but as this election demonstrates there should be an easier way to get rid of a rogue president. Leaving it to the non-existent honor code of Republicans is no way to run this country. He is a traitor undoing decades of work done by other presidents and people of good faith!

      • In that tweet link (not shown), Russian embassy is tweeting against Trump with his reckless position on Jerusalem like they are the good guys repeating what Bill Clinton came close to achieving in bringing about the ME peace.

  4. The GOP (Grotesque Order of Perverts) unveils its new logo: 😈

    • Is the governor of Pennsylvania a Rethug? If yes, maybe he’ll pardon Jerry Sandusky (if I recall the name correctly) to run for senator from PA next time! 😈

  5. Wow, what a graphic! Should be featured in every Dem ad in 2018.

  6. What! Why? Oh, Why?

  7. For a long time, the tri state area has gotten away with pretending to be progressive all while really being a Kleptocracy. I don’t know how people keep their head above water with this bill. Sad reality that a bunch of old white dudes care more about billionaires than single moms trying to provide for their kids.

  8. Read this tweet carefully. I was just thinking about this when the women in congress said today that Franken should resign. Proportion and perspective. Democrats are dumb while they berate their own like Bill Clinton and others who have done a lot of good to get rid of them while indirectly helping the Republicans infest congress with thugs and abusers who will kill the poor and the vulnerables

  9. If we adopt a “zero tolerance” for sexual misbehavior, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot as Democrats and as women.

    • Exactly. Then the world will be run by Trumps, Moores, and other despicable creatures. What is the Democrats plan to stop these mfers before they shun their own?

      • Yes, and women will end up being shut out of the corridors of power (more so than before) because we’re all so “complicated” and must be protected.
