The ecstatic orgy of congratulatory victory dances in the wake of the wins in Virginia and New Jersey have got to stop. Right now.
There’s still a senate race in Alabama. The DNC probably wrote off Doug Jones but if he loses, Roy Moore, and impeached judge and fundamentalist on steroids using methods that only Joe Arpaio would appreciate, will become a US senator.
Think about that for a moment. Because it’s going to continue to happen all over the US. Every single election from here on out is going to be a monumental struggle and will cost us all boatload of mucho dinero.
Think the pee tape is going to make a difference? That solid evidence of Russian collusion will bring Trump down? Think again. Trumpers LOVE the fact that he gets away with stuff. It gives them a tingle down their legs. The only thing that *might* derail him permanently is evidence that he was in on hacking the voting machines in Pennsylvania. And I’m not ruling that out.
Anyone who vows to be as out of control, chaotic and disdainful for the rule of law and political norms as Trump has a pretty good shot of being elected. That’s who they want. They want to upend things and make everyone else unhappy. It should be the new definition of evil: deliberately going out of your way to make people unhappy without much thought behind why you’re even doing it.
So don’t get comfortable. 2018 starts right now. You’re going to need to put your comfy shoes on and learn how to canvass, call voters and motivate the non-voter to get out there.
Stop that silly dancing.
This is the message we need to get across:

If you don’t vote, the crazies get to run EVERYTHING.

The Republicans are crafty buggers. They’re planning to delay the centerpiece of their “tax reform” package until 2019. And why would they do that?
Let’s unpack that, shall we?
They’ve spent the last 40 years going on and on and on about how government is too big, we’re spending too much money, money us scarce (debatable), we have to balance the budget like our checkbooks, which makes the scale of the budget seem relatable but completely ignores the macroeconomic impacts, blah, blah, blah.
So they want to impose some fairly draconian cuts to “entitlements” otherwise known as Medicare and social security which are NOT entitlements. They are earned but deferred benefits but whatever. And they’re going to also cut state tax deductions and mortgage deductions. But hey, that’s only really going to affect the coastal elite states so fuck’em.
But they have to be careful to make sure that middle class pain does not appear to be linked to massive cuts to the corporate tax. Maybe even wealthy people have to wait for their kibble. Because middle class people may strongly resent having yet another burden added to their lives in the interest of the exploitative profit miners in raw meat eating rent seeking mode.
In the meantime, the Republicans go to their ultra rich and increasingly impatient donors and explain that if they make the Republicans do this thing and blatantly screw the little people before a major midterm election, that’s it. They will have shot their wads. The Republicans will lose. Big time. That means there will be no further opportunities to stick a knife in what’s left of the New Deal. Better to wait until they can secure their seats in 2018 and pass the sucker in 2019.
Amirite? You know I am.
So, will the donors learn to defer gratification like other children or will they make the Republicans bow now to pay off their campaign contribution debts?
We shall see.

I think people are relieved they can still have some control despite all the chaos. But no time to rest.
They’re going to get cocky. They always do. I want the festivities to end right now and for people to get back to work. They’ve got to be more disciplined than they have been in the past.
On a positive note, sort of, we can bet trump will do something more egregious than ever to wake us all up. There are more GOP retirements in the House coming. They will be confused about their own strategy going forward.
And Democrats will somehow figure out a way of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They get overconfident and assume that squishy voters will see how OBVIOUS their choices are. They don’t. I was amazed at the number of white middle class women I canvassed last year who really thought Hillary was as bad as an inexperienced, terminally stupid, loud mouthed pussy grabber from Queens.
I blame some of this on Penis Years and some on the media. But at some point, we’re going to have to face it- some voters can be fooled over and over again.
number of white middle class women
I hear you. I could not convince a 23 year old woman who is a grad student doing computer science stuff (maybe she wasn’t all that and her idiot brother was a trump supporter — I blame the parents) to not believe everything she reads about Hillary on FB. Such was the Russian/trump and GOP enabled brainwashing on SM.
There were trumpian things like that in the VA GOP campaign too. But people (not Republican voters) dismissed all that to vote for Northam and he is no charmer. Women, Asians and other immigrants will save the day.
Agreed all true, will send donation to Jones today. Trump is down already, PA will destroy him, Pence et al. One bright note for me, the Trump voter I know, just following the Indictments was already saying Whhhhhaaa, me no, he is not my boy. But I’m pretty sure a far-left nominee will push him right back, main grievance from that corner is the perception all the promised FREE stuff, Free to the receiver but an additional cost from his pocket. He is from the mid-west, former Demish voter, doesn’t view Companies as bad guys on taxes but is very familiar with what happens when Companies close.
a far-left nominee will push him right back
Yes! This is the danger we have to stop. People want middle of the road and I have seen that in tweet after tweet.
Once the indictments came down I noticed the Trump voters not doing any mention of Trump.
“The … victory dances … have got to stop. Right now.”
Exactly. I’ve been feeling that since last night. Trying to bite my tongue all over the web not to rain on the parade, but, Jesus H. Christ, we haven’t even begun to fight.
Practically all the power is still in kakistocratic hands, 2018 and the sophisticated propaganda blitz and vote stealing are still months away. Yes, there’s some momentum there but we could lose it in a heartbeat. It’s happened (all the time) before.
So, yes, stop it, right now.
I understand completely your concern about victory dances after 2008 and the Obama gang was all about how the GOP was dead etc. However Perez is going to Alabama to help Jones. I don’t know how much he can do but he is at least going to try.
Perez going to AL? Good! Last I heard (2 weeks ago?) Dems weren’t sure there was any point trying to flip AL. (Eyes. Rolling. etc.) They need to give Jones *money*, not just Perez.
Being it’s Alabama they might want to keep all that on the down low.
Hah. Yes, true.
I’m not familiar with the PA vote hacking. Is this seriously being investigated? And Trump may go down for it? And Pence? I need to know…does anyone have a recommendation for where I can get info about this?
It’s merely speculative. As in, IFF there was vote hacking and it turned out Trump was complicit, I wouldn’t be surprised.
I have no idea if hacking actually occurred. My guess is that if it did happen, the urban areas were not the targets. That would have been too obvious. More likely rural counties padded their votes with some Democrats flipped in each precinct. That would have been more believable. I’m not sure any of us would know unless the voting machines were analyzed. PA has electronic voting without a paper trail. I can’t think of a more vulnerable target.
And I find it curious that the question came up in a couple of debates asking what Hillary would do if she lost PA. He also made a big deal about how we would challenge the PA result if he didn’t win. Trump is not very good at keeping his mouth shut so maybe he was giving away the strategy.
VA used all paper ballots in last night’s election.

There’s unhackthevote.com which is a good resource on the whole subject.
An interesting article in Alternet, “New Video: Watch Wisconsin Election Officials Reject Hand Counts After Electronic Scanners Make Big Mistake.” It shows just how odd the behavior of election officials can be. Filmed in Racine, WI.
Here I am – just turned 66 for Medicare and SS and now after 50+ years the heartless bastards decide we have to be responsible. Gawd I hate Republicans!
