    • Review of “Descarte’s Error” by Antonio Damasio
This book is a bit long in the tooth now, having been published in 95.  The role it suggests for emotion in the use of reason is, in generalities, no longer controversial. But it was a landmark book for me, when I read it, and it’s still relevant and worth reading. There’s been a LOT […]

It’s very simple.

Stephen Colbert broke it down for us last night. At its heart, the Battle of Charlottesville was not about statutes.

It was a clash between Nazis and NOT Nazis. The KKK and the NOT KKK. Anti-Semites and NOT Anti-Semites.

Which side are you on? Take your time. It’s a character test.

Here’s Colbert’s opening monologue from last night where he clears up any confusion for those of you still struggling with that question (I’m looking at you Constance and Blizz):

Stride: To the Barricades!

  1. US President applauds Charlottesville’s attack and murder by Neo Nazi – White Supremacist and blames the female victim for her own slaughter.

    Is what Im thinking today

    • She was suicidal and deliberately sought out a car driven by a white supremacist to ram her body into.

    • Did you get that from the fake news? Trump denounced the guy as a murderer. Might well be premature, though, because if it can be shown he feared for his life by the bat-wielding “not Nazis”, then he won’t be convicted.

      • VDare is hardly a reliable source. Harrumph.

Now, be off with you, churl.

      • Don’t bet on it. I’m going to guess any jury is going to think self-sacrifice is preferable to driving straight into a crowd of your adversaries. It doesn’t matter how mad you are. It’s not self defense if the people you mowed over weren’t directly threatening you.

Anyway, his car apparently worked just fine in reverse. He should have done that to begin with.

        You are losing this one

        • He’s done. He will be labelled the one violent White Supremacist and sacrificed so the rest can appear virtuous, reasonable.

          • We still have jury trials in this country, although I’m sure that’s another of our ancient rights that you goodthinking leftists will be coming for soon enough. Even Michael Slager was acquitted.

          • Yeah, see, I’m thinking that’s going to be a problem since we can go to the video tape and watch him floor it into a crowd and then backup at high speed. Since the roadway in front of him was blocked, a rational person might well wonder why he didn’t back out in the first place.
Of course, you’re right, we can’t always count on juries to be logical. But I’m sure the prosecutors will have a field day with this one.
You’re still sticking up for the Nazis. Are you sure you want to be doing that? Because we’re sure they aren’t worth your effort.

      • That’s hilarious you talked about fake news then link your source to a 100% fake news site that’s block by simple browser add on.

  2. Most Americans do not think or consider that that kind of people actually exist … I can assure you that they do … I have unintentionally met groups of them in three states … I actually had a person in leadership of a Fortune 50 company tell me that he was taking a week of vacation to attend a Klan rally in his home town in Georgia … this group is MUCH stronger than people realize …

    • Unfortunately, the Northern plutocrats, for the most part, really did not give a flying duck about the injustices done to the slaves (and later the freed ex-slaves). They just wanted to force the Southern plutocrats to stay in the Union so they could not repudiate their massive debts to the Northern plutocrats.

Hence, the Northern plutocrats (and the most of the average Northern citizens) were not willing to pay the price (monetary and other) that a full Reconstruction–analogous to the de-Nazification which has worked so well in Germany–would have required, so they sold out the freedmen (and freedwomen) in the Compromise of 1876.

Our country is still paying the price for this failure of will. 😡

  3. That Colbert clip. I’m so old I can remember when comedians tried to make jokes. And “New York hates you” – I guess hate trumped love, after all.

    • I’m the last person in the world who would tell you to conform. I can’t stand conformists. They’re boring, rigid and provincial. I’d rather spend my time talking to a painted soccer ball than spend even one hour with a conformist with their conventional morality and inability to think outside the box.

BUT do you REALLY want to be that guy who defends white supremacists? Because I guarantee that you’re about to become extremely unpopular.

      • What’s at issue is the right of people to assemble in protest without being violently attacked. This right has been guaranteed to Americans for over 200 years.

Furthermore, they weren’t marching for “white supremacy”, whatever that is, but of the desecration of historical monuments dedicated to great Americans. Below is Eisenhower on Robert E. Lee. Is Eisenhower a “Nazi” or “Not Nazi”? If this is a moral test, then we should know who is on each side.

        Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower
        White House
        Washington, D.C.

        Dear Mr. President:

At the Republication Convention I heard you mention that you have the pictures of four (4) great Americans in your office, and that included in these is a picture of Robert E. Lee.

I do not understand how any American can include Robert E. Lee as a person to be emulated, and why the President of the United States of America should do so is certainly beyond me.

The most outstanding thing that Robert E. Lee did, was to devote his best efforts to the destruction of the United States Government, and I am sure that you do not say that a person who tries to destroy our Government is worthy of being held as one of our heroes.

Will you please tell me just why you hold him in such high esteem?

        Sincerely yours,

        Leon W. Scott

        Quote
        August 9, 1960

        Dear Dr. Scott:

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War between the States the issue of secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.

General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was a poised and inspiring leader, true to the high trust reposed in him by millions of his fellow citizens; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his faith in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.

From deep conviction, I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s calibre would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the Nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.

        Sincerely,

        Dwight D. Eisenhower

  4. >>What’s at issue is the right of people to assemble in protest without being violently attacked. This right has been guaranteed to Americans for over 200 years.

No one was stopping them from marching. They were stopping them from antagonizing the counterprotestors at the Thomas Jefferson statue.

    >> Furthermore, they weren’t marching for White Supremacy

Oh, I’m sorry, I must have misheard those white guys shouting “Jews will not replace us”. They weren’t carrying Tiki torches and represented white nationalists groups whose goals are to promote the interests of white Men over every other group of people. David Duke and Richard Spencer were not there. Swastika imagery was not in evidence anywhere.

    Please.

The Civil War is over. Those statues were put there in the early 20th century as a reminder to “uppity negros” to not overstep their boundaries.

Let’s stop the game playing. You’re with the evil doers at this point. Is that REALLY where you want to be? You have to explain and defend them all the time and they really are indefensible.

On Saturday, neither group had a permit to march.

    • And the assault rifles they were carrying were made out of candy gum.

      • They were actually gun shaped Pez dispensers.
        Collectibles.

        • Alt-lefter with a flame-thrower. I’m sure he was just intending to quietly roast some marshmallows.

        • It doesn’t matter. I don’t know the context of that photograph. It looks like an aerosol can to me.

You are trying to make this about violence and the rest of us are telling you it’s all about ideology. We’re sticking with that. Ideology.

In case your mama didn’t learn you good, Nazis and white supremacists have a ugly and evil ideology. The rest of us will resist that with whatever we’ve got. We have no intention of devolving into a fascist state with White Guys at the top of the food pyramid without a fight. Just keep that in mind. You guys thought liberals were pushovers. Well, they’re not. Most of us will protest peacefully or with our bodies. Others may choose to protest differently. You shouldn’t assume your disgusting ideology is just going to be accepted because you have a fucking permit.

    • RD, how much longer do you intend to endure the unnecessary presence of this evil lout?

      • He serves a useful purpose. We need to understand what motivates them and look for effective counter arguments that can be delivered in zingers.

Let’s play with our food a little longer. Besides, as trolls go, he’s not obscene or dangerous. He’s just mislead and acting stupid.

    • Yes – the Civil War is over. But we all know it’s not going to stop there, don’t we? Your side has already gone after one of our greatest Presidents, Andrew Jackson. There’s no doubt that slave owners Jefferson and Washington, and white supremacist Abraham Lincoln will be targeted next.

I would rather local towns decide, and if they want to take down these statues they should be able to. But if I’m picking a side, it’s definitely not going to be the one that hates America and wants to erase its entire history. And I definitely don’t think someone is a “Nazi” for opposing that. My grandfather prosecuted Nazis at Nuremberg, and I know he would have a strong opinion on this subject.

        • Can we get our story straight, Ivory Bill Woodcuck? Were our grandfathers Nazi-punching heroes or racist deplorables? This is why your side is floundering — your rhetoric is based on cheap lies.

          • Some managed to be both at the same time; such are the complexities of human psychology.

However, their witness to the crimes of the Nazis did much to discredit bigotry of all sorts in this country; the Nazis gave ethnocentrism a bad name, when before it had largely been the human norm.

            Oh, and “Woodcuck”? 😆

      • If that’s true, then he saw evil up close and personal. I doubt he’d want you to defend these guys.

  5. Baltimore took down their Cornpone Nazi monuments last night. BOO-YAH!

    https://wonkette.com/621753/baltimore-takes-down-confederate-monuments-in-single-night-like-a-boss

  6. And Antifa was wielding bats and masks because they wanted a friendly game of snow baseball, right?

It cuts both ways. You want to hold our side responsible for every extreme weirdo that shows up to a rally, but you won’t even acknowledge the commies and goons on your side. Well guess what? Your side doesn’t have full-spectrum control of the media anymore. People can see for themselves what’s going on, without having to go through the corporate media gatekeepers (who always seem to side with the left – funny, isn’t it?). And President Trump will call out – yes – both sides.

    • The corporate media is leftist?

[snark] Yeah, we know how those corporate tycoons just can’t wait to brainwash the masses into installing socialism so the tycoons’ profits will get taxed away. [/snark]

      http://imgur.com/oB8dAbR

    • I’ve marched on protests. Never got an invitation from antifa. Would probably accept one from BLM though. AFAIK, you don’t need weapons to protest. Heather Heyer and the other counterprotestors who were run over didn’t have any.
BTW, antifa stands for Anti- Fascist. And who could argue with that?? Well, maybe You, but we already know where you’re coming from.

      • RD, Antifa are communists. See the flag in this photo from the 3rd International: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DHa7LjOXcAAxIEv.jpg

Our WW2 general Dwight Eisenhower deported 2 million Mexicans. It was called “Operation Wetback”. Was he a fascist?

        • You’re really a fucked up individual if no one’s mentioned that yet. 99.99% of America has never heard of “Alt-Left” or “Antifa” until last week. It’s just made up right wing childishness people like you masturbate to just so you stay awake long enough to keep your knuckles from dragging. But you are entertaining. Kind of like a circus clown, so you’re really not all that bad. I’d also sleep well at night if I ran your dumb ass over. You’re really a worthless human being. No offence…

          • Uh, miKe, you’d get suspended on Wonkette for that “if I ran your dumb ass over” comment. I don’t know how RD feels about it, but it seems to me that you’re rather making the Ratzi’s point for him.

          • who gives a fuck

          • Son, that attitude will not serve you well in life.

    • I hate to say this but you have really drink the kool-ade.
The so-called lefty media did our candidate in. Oh, it was all fun and games until someone loses a country.
Go ahead, listen to your propaganda. Most people are onto you and Trump. No one cares what you think anymore.
