    • God As Idea, By Eric Anderson
I woke up last night feeling like I was suffocating, because in my dream I was. It began in a church, or an old university lecture hall. Antique. And everyone in attendance was being asked to say little prayers honoring Jesus. Everyone was reciting little prayers that are common among the devout. But when it was my turn, I stood and exclaimed: Jesus was a ph […]

Sorrow and Strength

The Secretary of State’s remarks at the transfer of remains of 4 State department employees stationed in Libya:

  1. One of a few other blogs I read is Clusterfuck Nation by James Kunstler. I don’t know who he supported through the primaries. (Probably not the winsome hobbitelf from Greater Cleveland). He voted for Obama in the General. I’m not sure if he feels more “sorry” or “betrayenraged” but he isn’t happy. ( And hasn’t been for a while).

He also enjoys predicting the worst future for all us slobs who deserve it so far as he is concerned. I think we may enjoy a slower descent of the sort that The Archdruid hopefully predicts. All that aside, here is his post about the meaning of Obama. Hopefully millions of people will read it and agree and make their peace with the coming Age of the Long Descent. Here is the post.

    • Kunstler does like playing the contrary prophet and his nasty anti-womanism will show up in one tossoff sentence of his piece. So I offer a review of Kunstler’s fiction-book by Kunstler’s near-neighbor on a mountaintop homestead . . . Elaine Supkis. She rejects his dismissive disrespect for women but accepts parts of the rest of his message. She offers some correctives to the weakness of Kunstler’s vision as she sees it. And some may note Supkis’s own antiJewism elsewhere but I can’t keep engaging in ever-retreating recursive corrections. The possible lesson may be that many people may offer the functional equivalent of a mixed bucket of shit and shinola. In the Long Descent Future we can’t afford to lose the shinola for dismissing the shit. We will have to pick through one to get the other.

And I hope that The Archdruid’s predictions of slow gentle decay make Supkis’s hard-crash vision as wrong as Kunstler’s. Still, here is
      Supkis’s Kunstler-corrective review.

      • I’ll take a look at those links. I half-heartedly agree about picking the gems out of shit. But, (for me) it depends on something about the writer. I don’t know how to clarify it more than that but, I’m pretty unlikely to be impressed by the thoughts of a people who blanketly hate – no matter the target.

Unless it’s misguided/misdirected/miserable attempt at humor, I don’t see the point in letting those feelings corrupt the main point. But, I will take a look.

I’ve been staying out of the threads for the past few days because I have no confidence at all that I have anything of value to say about the Mideast – even in good times – I’ve been reading what I can. But mass violence scares me. And that’s pretty much as far as I get.

        • If you end up feeling . . . ” Well!? Where’s the shinola?” , then I won’t offer any more links to those two places.
