    • Killing Herd Animals
One of the great crimes and tragedies of our world is how we treat the animals we eat (or whose milk or eggs or other products we eat and use.) Factory farming keeps them in tiny enclosures, feeds them monotonous foods, and then when they’re slaughtered it’s a terrible experience: they’re terrified and die in […]

Bloomberg, bad optics and symbols

Let’s see what we have here with the raid of Zuccotti Park last night:

– The raid happens in the middle of the night by “jack booted thugs” disguised as New York’s finest with helicopters circling overhead.  It’s the right’s worst nightmare.

– They use LRAD devices that cause intense ear pain

– The media is banned from covering it; some reporters are roughed up and arrested

– The onsite free library of 5,000 books was destroyed as were the books

– Personal property was destroyed, loaded into dump trucks and can only be retrieved with proper identification, IFF you can identify your broken personal belongings

– The occupiers are still banned from the park despite a court order so, apparently, Bloomberg and his 1% feel they are above the law

– The Mayor is a member of the 1%.  No, I take that back.  He is a member of the .1%

– The Mayor is using the field tested words “clean”, “health” and “safety” but no cases of typhoid, cholera or other contagious diseases have been reported.

– There is a bigger difference between the words “clean” and “cleanse” than two letters.  Cleansing has been the excuse that all the bad governments on earth have used to remove troublemakers and inconvenient people from their midst.

– Mayors from Oakland, Portland and Denver have also “cleansed” their parks.  It looks like a coordinated effort.  Who are they taking orders from?  Homeland Security?  On what grounds?  Was it the 1%?  What government died and made them gods?  And why did Mayor Jean Quan’s legal council and deputy mayor quit yesterday saying they supported the Occupiers?

I would be very careful about how I used the cleaning words and metaphors because people aren’t stupid. Well, some right wing conservative gullible people who watch Fox News are have acquired stupidity syndrome (ASS) but the rest of America knows when something doesn’t feel right.

And it doesn’t feel right after this “Cleansing of the Occupiers”

This is not the beginning of the end, it is the end of the beginning.

Update from Occupy Wall Street:  The mass action that was planned for Thursday, November 17 is still on.  I’m still waiting to hear whether union leaders and religious clergy who are meeting with the Occupiers are going call for action today or whether they will be able to hold it off until Thursday.

Marsha reports that Occupy the London Stock Exchange is rallying in solidarity of Occupy Wall Street, Portland, Oakland and Denver:

We will gather with Americans at the US Embassy as they demand entry to question their Ambassador why the US will condemn repression of peaceful protest in Egypt and Syria while the NYPD, Oakland PD, Denver, PD, and others beat and gas peaceful protesters in the US to suppress dissent.

And this comment from the NYTimes frontpage article on the raid goes right to the heart of what’s wrong with this picture:

“If only they enforced bank regulations like they do park rules, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”

Yes, when was the last time we raided Goldman-Sachs or JP Morgan Chase, dragged them out of their offices, beat and peppersprayed them for being menaces to society? Bloomberg really stuck his foot in it. The comments are overwhelmingly against him. Now, all eyes are fixed on the people he’s protecting from a bunch of committed protestors running an open air salon. The message doesn’t get any clearer.

  1. RD are you going into NY today?

I have been stomping around the house (in Arizona) all morning wishing I could do something, be there, shout from the roof tops. Is it a coincidence that the Wall Street Shut Down was being planned for Thursday? I have a feeling it will still take place and be bigger than “expected”.

This will change the Movement (which, ironically, will probably be helpful to its growth) but this is not the end. I am filled with rage and have not been this fired up since I went to DC several times for Women’s Rights/Pro-Choice in the 1980’s.

    • Marsha, the march for Thursday may be moving to an earlier date. I don’t know. The occupiers are meeting with union leaders and clergy as we speak. I just saw some little old lady in Manhattan chewing out some police officer on the street. She didn’t look like the occupier type so you can safely assume that New Yorkers are pissed off. It’s more than just that the park was cleansed. It’s that the media was prevented from covering it. Even a city council member was arrested. The excuse used to cleanse the park is holier than swiss cheese. No one believes Bloomberg.
We’ll see if the unions and religious leaders want to do an action today or wait. Stand by.

  2. I’m taking a day trip to NYC as soon as my electronics are fully charged.

‎3 PM at the US Embassy, in Solidarity with Occupy Wall Street –

We will gather with Americans at the US Embassy as they demand entry to question their Ambassador why the US will condemn repression of peaceful protest in Egypt and Syria while the NYPD, Oakland PD, Denver, PD, and others beat and gas peaceful protesters in the US to suppress dissent.

  4. “If only they enforced bank regulations like they do park rules, we wouldn’t be in this mess.”

    That says it all.

  5. …taken from that NY Times Article linked above:

“I think my neighbors and I are very thankful that the mayor acted,” she said, “but we remain completely outraged for having to endure this for nine weeks.”

    Unbelievable!

People are being tossed out of their homes…. Jobs ( or ones with a decent living wage ) are as difficult to find as Big Foot…. Food and basic living commodities are being priced out of many a folks reach etc.. and all this Mother @!$!##%@# can think about is her discomfort at having to endure some noise by those that are trying to fight for HER future????

(Trying to contain rage…Don’t want to make my Mama regret calling me her son by displaying ungentlemanly conduct )

A dark mood is starting to blanket our country and all this SOB cared about is the discomfort she and her neighbors went thru having to look at the unwashed masses?.

Yeah….we are fast approaching a tipping point and I believe it is going to get a whole lot nastier before “THEY” realize just how angry/desperate many of us really are!

Oh…..I suppose the “Heavy tactics the Police State used” was justified in the eyes of some……… Yeah……You know who you are!

  6. Yves Smith of Naked Capitalism has posted a post on on the wider national co-ordination effort of police shutdowns natioinwide as the greater context for this Zucotti police shutdown. She notes how the excuse of “public safety” is invoked as is traditional for fascist controllers against rights and democracy. She then re-offers in detail
an idea that someone suggested to allow and enable the various occupy efforts to occupy in shifts so as to follow all the “laws” against
camping and sleeping and so forth. She indicates that the OverClass is directing heretofore locallay-accountable police forces to suppress the Occupists because the OverClass is concerned that the Occupists
can actually catalyze effective citizen counter-attacks against OverClass Aggression and Economic Colonization.

  7. Did anyone in the OWS make a list of all those book titles? Those must have been some very scary books to frighten the rich peoples’ rent-a-cop police force into destroying them.

Has anyone in the OWS movement made a title list and posted it somewhere on line? Maybe they should. Maybe OWS should think in terms of “Occupy the Internet” or at least start a permanent go-to presence there.
