    • How Important Is The Drone Attack On The Saudi Oil Field?
As you’d expect from the title, both more and less than it seems. The impact on oil prices is not that big a deal, despite the screaming. If they were to, say, wind up at $75/barrel for a few months, well the last time we had prices that high was… less than a year ago. […]

Overnight Open Thread

From Slate:

Are the Palin Girls Cyberbullies?
Analyzing their Facebook flame war.

Check out this oxymoronic paragraph:

The headlines on Gawker and TMZ are about Willow’s homophobia because she called a couple of the guys she was attacking “gay” and “faggot.” The language, however typical of adolescent taunts, is shameful, especially in light of the recent cluster of suicides by gay kids. But what’s also striking about the thread is that it has all the hallmarks of a typical teenage Facebook flame war. The Palins sound nothing like image-conscious celebrity kids, and since they seem to know some of their Facebook critics, the fight quickly gets personal and nasty, just as any high-school Internet battle can.

It’s shameful homophobia and a typical Facebook flame war! It’s your typical personal and nasty adolescent taunts, just like any high-school internet battle!

What she said was wrong but Willow Palin no longer has a Facebook page and Bristol has issued an apology. Rather than focus on these two young women we should be concerned with the “typical” nature of what they said.

IOW – Let’s focus on the forest and not just a particular pair of trees.

On a related topic I’m gonna predict that the Season 11 finals of DWTS will be the highest rated EVER. It will also have the highest number of viewer votes in the program’s history.

ABC is loving every minute of it.

This is another open thread.

  1. Back when we still had violent cartoons on Saturday mornings I loved the Green Lantern.

  2. I never understood the GL. Was he just a general good guy –no super powers?

  3. Let’s look at the forest and not these 2 trees? Ha! Those suffering from PDS will NEVER do that. They make up sh!t about these people (paying for rape kits, Bristol birthing her baby brother, for just two examples of hundreds). Do you really think they are going to let go of something they *actually* have on them?
    Never.
And people need to get off the “bullying” meme because the more they talk about it the more they reveal they don’t know what the f*ck “bullying” actually is. Calling someone a bad word isn’t bullying — yes name calling can be a part of bullying, but not if it is one isolated incident. Bullying is repeated acts over time attempting to create or enforce one person’s (or group’s) power over another person (or group) , the objective being to create an imbalance of power.
Well, I take that back, the PDS suffers certainly know how to bully the Palin children.

  4. I agree on that DWTS prediction. People getting all worked up about these kids really should look into getting a life. Seriously. And that includes laying off the kool-aid and worshiping Obama. Stop already.

  5. Joseph Cannon has posted a video message on what he’s been up to.

  6. As to Willow’s comments on face book, of which they have since apologized and she shut down her account, forget politics, forget the Palins. What is so atrocious is that several boys were clearly bullying those girls using a lot of nasty sexual language. Nobody even addresses that and it’s something that happens to teen girls all the time with no accountability. In a better world, girls would be able to go on the internet without having their bodies and sexuality attacked and ridiculed. And our culture would speak out about it.

It will do absolutely no good to speak out for gay rights if people ignore sexism because homophobia has its roots in misogyny. One of the main slurs against gay men is the implication they are like girls, and if you’re like a girl, you’re sub human with a big target on your back. Gays will never have equality until women do.
