What’s a “Liberal” Again?

President Obama is considered a “liberal” Democrat in denial by the Village. If you ask Obama about his “shellacking” (can I take the time to point out how lame that word is and how sick I am of hearing it?) two weeks ago he will say that it was a messaging problem. While he was toiling away with legislation trying to help us ingrates he just didn’t have the time to go out and say how all of it was going to benefit our ungrateful behinds so we punished him at the voting booth for not chatting with us enough.

And it is at this point that most Americans ask themselves if he has mental problems. As John Smart explained earlier,

The idea that Obama’s problem is one of persuasion or communication is complete bullshit. Total bullshit. Undiluted, grade-A bullshit. Here’s why: He’s been on television constantly since he came into office, he been on every third chat show, he’s been on ESPN, he gave over 50 major addresses on healthcare, he tortured us with a 3 month Hamlet act on Afghanistan (now largely moot.) all of it made public to prove he had depth, he made a nationally televised address from Congress on healthcare, he hosted a White House summit on healthcare, he spent the 2 months before the midterm in full campaign mode, he made the rounds of backyards across the land, he’s got an entire network – MSNBC – dedicated to pushing his message and an army of talking head apologists, not to mention the forever blabbing Biden, he’s got the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, a slew of nationally syndicated columnists who still believe his nonsense, and a festering caldron of bloggers still churning out pro-Obama sewage.

The message got out, Mr. President. The people heard it. They did not like the message and do not like the messengers. Most don’t like the other side much either but we are only allowed to choose between Coke and Pepsi, so one had to lose.

You communicated, Barry. Loud and clear. Not a day went by without a message fromyour highness. Communication is not the problem. You are.

A COMMUNICATION PROBLEM? Are you serious? Is that why he thinks he lost? Not a day has gone by in the past two years where any of us has been able to escape his ass. He has constantly been on our T.V. screens, the magazines we read, the shows we watch. He was on the View! THE VIEW! Personally, it’s a tough call between him and Justin Bieber as to who I am sick of seeing more. It gets to a point where I go to the drug store to pick up gum or cigarettes and he is on the cover of a pack of Newports. I want to run around in circles screaming “Get out of my life!”

Frankly, Americans voted for him because he was a Democrat and he promised to deliver change. Instead, he gave us more of the same. A Heritage Foundation version of Health Insurance Reform and a lousy stimulus are cited as his “liberal” legislative accomplishments. He also continued the Bush Bailouts, continued both Wars, continued using the Constitution as a kleenex by citing “executive authority” as a reason to assassinate someone without a trial, and he now plans on destroying Social Security and extending the Bush Tax cuts.

THAT’S why he got his ass handed to him in the midterms. Not because we failed to see how great all of that “stuff” he got done was. We saw what he “got done” and it was the exact same thing we wanted to stop seeing when he got into office.

Obama may be claiming he is taking responsibility for the “shellacking”, but he is not. And despite all evidence to the contrary he is still considered by the media to be a “liberal” Democrat.

I and almost everyone on this blog consider myself a “liberal.” Call me crazy, but I don’t see someone who wants to have butt sex with Ronald Reagan and wants to uphold DADT as liberal, but maybe I’m missing the definition of what a “liberal” is.

As a Liberal, I believe in a Social Safety net, equal rights for all and war as an unnecessary evil. As a Liberal I believe in empowering people rather than trying to get power over them. And as a Liberal I believe that the moment you think you’re better than anyone else is the moment you need to be punched in the face.

This is the anti-thesis of everything Obama has done in his career and as Commander in Chief, so why is he considered a “liberal?” And why is Bill Clinton, a guy who spent his entire life and Presidency trying to empower people rather than get power over them considered a DLC “Centrist?” It boggles my mind.

I think that over the past few decades in this country Movement Conservatives have succeeded in tainting the word “liberal” into meaning something it isn’t. If Obama is a “Liberal” than I’m most certainly not one. So what does that make me? A Socialist?

  1. Hiya Isis. No, Obama is not a liberal or a progressive or a Roosevelt, Truman or Clinton Democrat. He is simply an elitist with no principles who cares more about his self image than about policy or the people of this country. He is a fading rock star.

    • Jack Cafferty just about had me spill my soup (late lunch)…’Some people’….hemmm…as I RECALL he was one of those people PUSHING Obama and attacking Hillary and now they are trying to point the finger else where about those FOOLISH PEOPLE that thought he had EXPERIENCE!

Obama says ‘some stuff done’, like I say, ‘that thingie’ when I don’t know the name of the metal protector bracket (that prevents harm to the electrical wires and pipes) when speaking to the city while pulling my building permit. 😯 In my case one inspector told the other inspector that I was about done and said the name of the bracket thingies that were to be installed before my rough inspector. The one inspector that knew looked at the other and said, I was ready and that the plumber was ‘licensed’…so I got through the rough inspection, but EVERYONE KNEW I didn’t have plumbing experience  and were helping me along, but NO ONE IS GOING TO HIRE ME TO DO PLUMBING!

  2. Honk! Honk!

Love your definition of Liberal. You’re a working class liberal like the rest of us.

    • Agree. I hope we can reclaim the definition of liberal. Have notices more and more fauxgressives these days have migrated away from the term progressive and are calling themselves liberal. Not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

  3. As to his being now labeled a “liberal,” that’s mostly the Republicans’ doing imo. Republicans and the Tea Party first slayed the term “socialist” then they slayed the term “progressive” and now they’re going after the term “liberal” in an organized assault. Poor fauxgressives these days don’t seem to know what to call themselves. Even the term “Democrat” took a bad beating with the midterms. Aside from Obama, I don’t even know these days who the leaders of the Democratic Party are.

  4. I am a liberal, a real liberal. I am also a socialist. And proud of it. Compared to Obama, however, Nixon was a Socialist and Clinton was an out-and-out Commie.

  5. I love a good rant

  6. Maybe if the president spoke slowly and really loudly the people would hear him boringly drone on about stuff we do not care about. Perhaps slowing down the teleprompter would help. I keep thinking of Garrett Morris of SNL doing a News for the Hard of Hearing translation for President Obama giving a press conference (if he ever had one).

  7. Ahh–you’re being too hard on ‘the wunderkind.’ I’d say he’s only slightly to the right of Genghis Khan.

  8. Obama makes changes to faith-based partnerships

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has signed off on what the White House says are significant improvements to federally funded partnerships between the government and religious-based and neighborhood organizations.
The government will be required to refer participants in federally funded social service programs to other providers if they object to the religious nature of the organization providing the services.
Faith-based groups that receive federal money may use their facilities to provide social services without removing or altering religious art, icons, scriptures or other symbols on the premises. Such groups may also keep religious terms in their names.
The changes are outlined in an executive order Obama signed Wednesday.

Isn’t that nice. Americans will have choice.

  9. Came to the realization that BO could not handle losing at all that is why he has just a lukewarm reception to the public option part. He wants to show us Clintonistas that he could mess with what we want because we voted for Hillary and not him. It might explain those that he had pushed under the bus, too.

And a bold prediction from me:

Nov. 17, 2010. Remember this date.

He will now become mad at those youngsters who got hypnotized by his “hope and change” meme and thus will become lukewarm to their position and throw them under the bus w/ us.

And if the African Americans suddenly comes to the realization that BO is just making their lives a mess as the rest of us, he will be ready to throw them under the bus, too. Mark my words.

    • I think African Americans caught on when the economy went south and no one gave a damn. They’re way ahead of us.

  10. I think he plans on explaining everything very clearly on Mythbusters. 🙄 Great rant.

  11. I don’t get it? Why would a respectable death merchant like Newport get involved with a low life like Obama”?

  12. Big Dawg gets tagged as “centrist” mainly because of NAFTA and “welfare reform”.

I disapprove of both of those, but I realize he had little choice in those matters, thanks to decades of lavishly-funded right-wing propaganda, which convinced a sufficient mass of the US public that welfare recipients were lazy bums who should get a job or starve (never mind there were no jobs, or they didn’t pay enough to live on), and that what was good for corporations was good for Joe and Jane Q. Public.

Oh, could we please not use “lame” as a pejorative? Disabled people can’t help their conditions. Thanks. (I need to watch myself on that one, too.) 🙄

    • Aw, sorry IBW. I didn’t even think of it when I called that word “lame.”

      • I don’t think ill of you, Isis. It’s hard to avoid a bad habit when the culture is saturated with it. Again, I find myself wanting to use it and needing to stop myself. 😳

    • I don’t like NAFTA and welfare reform as they are, but I don’t believe they are all bad. Both would benefit with just a few changes.

      • I agree about welfare reform. I work with lots of people on state aid, and over generations, it is very damaging, and enervating, to people. I actually respected that Bill C. put on some limits and developed welfare to work programs. I think he gets that working and supporting your family and being a productive role model for your kids is much better than collecting a check over the long term that you did nothing to earn.

        Really great post, LI

        • I used to believe what Erica believes.

I also used to believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

The “work ethic” is a scam, just like everything else in this society, and really, all other human societies as well. Grifters flourish while honest people toil in peonage or struggle on the street.

Yeah, I reckon I’m a nihilist by now. So be it.

Actually, I guess I’m a Gnostic, except I don’t believe in any Demiurge. The scientists are right; no guiding intelligence made this hell of irremediable moral anarchy known as the natural universe, or the life in it.

If I ever lose my rather weak faith in a loving Deity beyond this universe, then I will become a nihilist.

And while I’m at it, “Bah, humbug!”–might as well say it now and avoid the rush. 😛

          • Correction: I used to more or less believe what Erica believes.

I can haz edit feechur, plz? 😛

      • Welfare reform especially, which was a WI democrat created policy before Bill grabbed on. We have always had people flocking to WI (from Chicago I might add) because of our generous welfare bennies. Then they tried W2, which among other things provided jobs, daycare, and transportation. It’s the lack of oversight that made it into the boondoggle it became.

  13. George Soros Tells Progressive Donors Obama Might Not Be The Best Investment. Guess he got his bailouts and wants to move on. Schmuck.

  14. Another great post, LI, though it pains me to watch Hillary give supportive words to Obama. I know she is classy and above it all but, just for once, I would love her to let it rip and tell an interviewer just how bad she thinks her “boss” is.

  15. Fantastic rant! Obama got his ass handed to him on a platter because he is just not a Liberal.

  16. Hey things are starting to change. I even saw a blogger at Kos today admit that supporting Obama over Hillary was a huge mistake.
