Thursday Schmursday…gimme some Friday

Ahh, Thursday.  We’ve made it through hump day and it’s downhill now to the end of the day Friday.  The news has been predictable and slow: Healthcare yada yada yada.

Was that poor girl in California who was gang-raped in front of 20 people a victim of “Genovese Syndrome?” That’s what some experts are saying.  Even so, how have we failed our children when something like this happens and they consider it entertainment?  This is the most devastating news story in quite some time.  My heart goes out to that poor child and her family.

  1. Levi Johnston should be the poster child for abstinence.

I notice he spends most of his time far away from Alaska. Maybe he’s not as dumb as he looks.

  2. Heh:

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs and Michael Clemente, Fox News’ senior vice president for news, met at the White House for about 20 minutes on Wednesday morning, sources said.

Gibbs reached out to Clemente on Monday, the sources said.

They started a war with FOX News and then surrendered faster than the Iraqi army.

    • I wondered what happened to Baghdad Bob:

Obama Advisers Have No Regrets About Fox Feud
White House strategists say they are pleased with how things stand

He was the Iraqi who was predicting we would be crushed by the Iraqi soldiers who were surrendering to news crews. He must be working as an Obama adviser now.

      • That whole “war with Fox” was a big snoozefest. Most of us give very little credence to these partisan entertainment forums anyway.

        • Why did they start it in the first place?

It was either a diabolical plan to energize both parties’ bases or it’s amateur hour in the White House.

The Obamacrats couldn”t organize a donut run to Krispy Kreme without screwing up.

Last year Obama had more money, the media and the DNC leadership in his pocket and Hillary still got more votes than he did.

    • I don’t think Fox will give an inch. But I have noticed Tapper (ABC) and Dickerson (CBS) have been more actively stroking the President on Twitter since this whole media relations thing flared up two weeks ago. That’s a change for Tapper. Dickerson has more than a million followers. So does Gregory and Maddow. But interestingly, stats clearly show that conservatives have the upper hand over progressives on Twitter. Seems progressives may be burnt out from the past two years while the conservatives are finding their sea legs online and they have more energy.

      • The conservatives were pretty quiet last year. I’ve never seen Republicans so passive during an election.

It’s like they didn’t want to win.

        • They didn’t.
They saw what was ahead: massive long-term economic problems. Let Obama and the Democrats deal with it and take the blame. It’s so much more fun to be in the minority when everything is collapsing and you can’t be held responsible.
Besides, McCain wasn’t their “kind of people”, don’t you know.

        • If we had allowed them to win. The next 4 years would have likely finished them off as a brand. Instead our party decided to resusitate them by having the party leadership annoint Obama as our candidate. I swear the Democratic leadership is either clueless or in cahoots and I’m not sure which choice is worse.

          • I had misgivings (for lack of a better word) about the Dem leadership starting in 2000 when they made the bizarre decision not to fight for the Bush v. Gore election. It just didn’t make sense. They were spineless, and I don’t give a cr@p about bipartisanship when the fundamental integrity of a presidential election is at stake. If they wouldn’t fight for that–wtf? That’s when I started feeling queasy around my party selling out.

Now I know they’ve sold out, and they’re incompetent nincompoops to boot–or as you said, clueless and in cahoots.

          • and not just the Dem leadership, what about the whole morass who voted for him? The supposedly intellectually superior rank ‘n’ file Dems — lawyers, professors, the creative class?

      • The poor shell-shocked Obots. They are worse than deer caught in the headlights.

  3. I am from Indiana and it is well-known here that Evan Bayh, our former governor, is a Democrat in name only – unlike this father, the great former Senator Birch Bayh.
When Evan-Boy was governor, he tried to cut off Medicaid funding to group housing for the developmentally disabled. ( Hey, they don’t vote or contribute to campaigns, do they? ) He thought, mistakenly, that no one would notice or care but people did, even in our conservative state. His plan did not go through.
When Evan was governor, he and his lovely wife, Susan, were known as “Ken and Barbie”. She is a professional corporate board member, mostly on health-care related boards.

    • I grew up in Indiana too, and I remember Birch Bayh well. He was a true liberal. I don’t know what happened to Evan. He’s better looking than his dad, but otherwise pfffft!

  8. I spoke with my Doctor’s office manager yesterday to see if they got the swine flu vaccine in yet. She said they got 30 doses of the nasal spray. When she called the supplier to find out about the shot vaccine she was told they did not have any so the sent her the nasal sprays even though that was not what she ordered and they did not know when they would get any shots. I sent my two sons over today to get one of the 30 – they both attend college and work around a lot of people so their expsure is of great concern to me.

She said it was so screwed up she could hardly wait for the “health reform”. She said all the vaccines seem to be going to the East coast.

    • It’s not in SW Virginia. After my son got the flu I started to look into vaccination for the rest of the kids and we aren’t expected to get it until mid November. I think at this point we all have been exposed though. 3 of the kids spiked high fevers. My oldest is the only one who ended up with a consistent low grade temp. Hubby ran a temp the other day. They tested for flu and he came up negative so we may have had a touch of other stuff running around too. Loads of fun. I’ve pretty much cancelled trick or treating this year and am going to listen to audiobook while making cookies and cupcakes with kids and then play some games and watch movies.

    • We don’t have any here, so I don’t know what part of the east coast that would be–the southeast?

An economy that does not create many jobs does not seem like a good economy to me. I understand and agree that unemployment benefits have to be longer as people have to live. But if I have a job I might have a future. Unemployment benefits will run out then what happens?
Now that backtrack and bunch have redistributed a lot of the wealth of this country, how do average people who have worked hard and saved and been totally screwed survive?
Congress has become nothing but a drain on the people.

  12. Is it any wonder that China owns us? They make things. We don’t anymore. Can an economy be strong without a strong manufacturing base? The elitist argument that we are now a postindustrial nation with an information and service-based economy doesn’t seem to be working out so well for many in this country. Maybe we are now a neo-postindustrial nation?

    • And the “information”-type jobs are being outsourced as fast as possible.

Wasn’t it Henry Ford who wanted his workers to make enough so they could buy a Ford product? Seems current CEOs have forgotten all about that concept.

This article reminds me of something that happened to me when I first came to California.
My children sent me roses for Mothers Day. They were supposed to be peach colored roses from all 4 kids.
I got red roses with only two names on the card. My daughter who manages an optical store called and complained and since there was a money back guarantee if not satisfied, wanted the money back.
I got a knock at my door and a man said he came to repossess the roses. They were supposed to live for a least a week but had died in three days. I had thrown out the dead roses. I gave him back the vase.
When I went to work that night we were trying to decide how and what do you put on a resume for a rose reprossessor
What education do you need, what hourly salary is expected, what running speed do you need and so forth.
I may have forgotten the roses but I will never forget the repossession of the them. My family still laugh about it when we get together.

  19. Hillary calls out the liars:

Clinton puzzled at Pakistan failure to find al Qaeda

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s said on Thursday it was “hard to believe” that no one in Pakistan’s government knew where al Qaeda leaders were hiding, striking a new tone on a trip where Washington’s credibility has come under attack.

“I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn’t get them if they really wanted to,” she told a group of newspaper editors during a meeting in Lahore.

“I am more than willing to hear every complaint about the United States,” Clinton said, “”but this is a two way street.

“If we are going to have a mature partnership where we work together” then “there are issues that not just the United States but others have with your government and with your military security establishment.”

  21. If you can stomach the “How Brilliant and Wonderful Obama & His Team Were” infomercial that this article is:

The Audacity to Win: How They Did It
    By David Plouffe

What surprised me at [our first meeting to discuss the vice presidency] was that Obama was clearly thinking more seriously about picking Hillary Clinton than Ax and I had realized. He said if his central criterion measured who could be the best VP, she had to be included in that list. She was competent, could help in Congress, would have international bona fides and had been through this before, albeit in a different role. He wanted to continue discussing her as we moved forward.

We met again a couple of weeks later in mid-June and winnowed the list down to about 10 names.

At our next meeting, we narrowed the list down to six. Barack continued to be intrigued by Hillary. “I still think Hillary has a lot of what I am looking for in a VP,” he said to us. “Smarts, discipline, steadfastness. I think Bill may be too big a complication. If I picked her, my concern is that there would be more than two of us in the relationship.”

In early August, he narrowed his list down to three names: Senator Joe Biden of Delaware, Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana and Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia. Hillary did not make the last cut. At the end of the day, Obama decided that there were just too many complications outweighing the potential strengths. But I gave him a lot of credit for so seriously thinking about his fierce former rival. Some in the Clinton orbit thought we gave Hillary short shrift. My view is that any serious consideration was somewhat surprising given all the complications and the toxicity during the primary campaign.

  24. I hate to set off a debate among liberals about morality, but when adults are so clearly immoral, crude and rudderless, what do we expect from children? Most of the left went bat-shit crazy when Hillary suggested that there should not be pornographic content in video games for children even if it is hidden (like they can’t find hidden code in about two minutes). And hollywood thinks everything is groovy when an old man rapes a 13 year old. Many on the left agree. We also have a lot of people who believe you shouldn’t talk about abstinence (I did NOT say abstinence only)
With TV and magazines and videos all celebrating teen sex, why the hell would we expect teens not to think gang rape is entertainment?

    • I don’t buy into the vidoe games and magazines made them do it meme.

Certainly by the time you hit your teens, most of us are able to discern pretend from real. I’d be willing to bet some of them did nothing out of fear they might become a target themselves.

      • it has nothing to do with knowing what is real and what is not, it is all about desensitizing a person so that nothing is sacred or important.
Please tell me you are not saying it is okay for there to be pornographic content in video games aimed at children.

    • Many parents no longer make kids accountable for their actions. The are not taught to make good choices.
How many are surprised when they go out into the world and find out it really does not revolve around them?
Be a parent is hard work and is not about being popular. Teaching kids morals and to stand on their own two feet is not always pleasant and many tears are shed. But better those tears then the tears of failure to help and teach .
How many lives have been ruined in just this one incident?
The girl, the rapists, and the watchers who will have to live with their cowardly non-actions.

      • I think my generation, the boomers, have been rather bad parents as a whole. So many of my friends and even my ex have said they could not tell their children not to do drugs or wait for real affection and caring for someone and a committed relationship before having sex. What I heard was “oh I can’t be a hypocrite. I still get high and I never got hurt by having one night stands”….said the 50 year old guy delivering Pizza and on his third marriage.

I am far from the worlds greatest parent, but I had no problem being a hypocrite for the sake of my children. It is not that they always took my advice, though I was shocked at the times they came to me for it. But they had limits to rebel against and they had a healthy sense of responsibility to the girls they were with etc…

  27. Good thing we keep selling our collective asses to the Chinese and obama refuses to meet with HHDL … they’re such an outstanding country

ICT Report (10/26/09): Official confirmation of execution of Tibetans in Lhasa: Reports by exile Tibetan organizations on the execution of two Tibetans in Lhasa on October 23 for their alleged roles in the protests and rioting in Lhasa on March 14, 2008, have been confirmed by the Chinese embassy in London. According to a report in the Chinese State media, Lobsang Gyaltsen and Loyak were sentenced to death in April 2009 on charges relating to “starting fatal fires.” They are the first known executions of Tibetans in connection with the Lhasa riot on March 14, 2008, although others have been killed following torture in custody. Reports of two other executions have not been officially confirmed by Chinese authorities.

It makes sense if they’re secretly working for the Republicans–distance themselves from the only two Democrats many Americans can stomach, plus alienate the legions of Dems who love Hill and are trying to pretend Obama’s almost as good, even as it becomes harder and harder to keep up the pretense.

If they’re not secretly trying to elect Republucans (literal Republicans, I mean, not Republicans with D’s after their names like BO), then it seems to make no sense.
