    • What Negative Interest Rates Mean And What We Should Do
Alright, so Germany has now introduced a zero interest bond. That means, given inflation, people will get back less effective money than they started with. At this point, outside the US, the average interest rate is negative. As Stoller pointed out, that means that people with money can’t figure out anything productive to do with […]

Racist Wanker

Gary Frago

Gary Frago

You may recall the original report about this story.  From the Merced Sun-Star:

Violent and racist e-mail jokes alluding to the assassination of President Barack Obama, the killing of Latinos and violence against black people were forwarded by Atwater City Councilman Gary Frago during the last six months, according to more than 200 new e-mails obtained by the Sun-Star from the city of Atwater.

The councilman, who forwarded the newly obtained e-mails to city staff and a county supervisor, among others, has been under public pressure to resign since it was learned in July that he had sent other racist e-mails in late 2008 and early 2009.

One of the most troubling of the new Frago e-mails, forwarded in January, joked that Nokia had designed a new cell phone for “nervous white people” who want to make calls in a series of cities known for their large black populations, such as Oakland and New Orleans. The phone was a gun.

[…]

Another e-mail forwarded by Frago on Dec. 9, 2008, was in the form of a fictitious letter sent by Sen. John McCain to John Hinckley Jr., a man obsessed with actress Jodie Foster, who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. The letter said that Hinckley would be released soon and he should know that Obama was sleeping with Foster now.

[…]

A third e-mail joked about killing illegal immigrants and Obama delegates. The joke is about a man applying for a position with a police department. As a test, the chief tells the applicant: “Take this gun with 13 bullets and go out and shoot six illegal immigrants, six Obama delegates and a rabbit.” The man asks: “why the rabbit?”

“Fantastic attitude,” says the chief. “When can you start?”

[…]

Frago, who says he won’t resign from the council, is already in hot water after revelations surfaced in a Sun-Star story July 17 that he e-mailed a series of racist jokes about the president, first lady and blacks in general.

Frago has begun racial sensitivity classes and this week resigned his honorary position as mayor pro tem. “I have made a mistake, I should have known better,” he said at a special meeting on the e-mails in late July.

His “sensitivity classes” should require him to go to downtown Oakland and tell those jokes to the residents. This guy has no business holding elective office.

  1. Doesn’t California have a recall provision?

    • That’s for state offices – I don’t know if it applies to city council members.

I don’t live in Atwater but if I did I would happily vote to recall his ass.

      • He is strictly an “honorary” mayor; that means he is not elected.

        • He was elected to the Atwater City Council – Mayor Pro-tem is honorary and just means he chairs the meetings if the mayor is absent.

Can residents of Atwater petition to remove whomever the City Council appoints to fill the vacancy? The answer is yes. This process is by recall. Specifically, Elections Code section 11006 states that “proceedings may be commenced for the recall of any elective officer, including any officer appointed in lieuof election or to fill a vacancy, by the service, filing and publication or positing of a notice of intention to circulate a recall petition pursuant to this chapter.” Recall is the power of the electors to remove an elective officer.30 These rights are comparable to the constitutional right of free speech.31

Compliance with the Elections Code is the responsibility of the recall proponents.

The answer so says the city attorney is you can recall him.

  2. I beg to differ ~ douchebags have a useful purpose.

  3. The theme this am seems to be that we have right wing, racist wing nuts. I used to get into how bad the right wing is, then I saw the left wing wing nuts rearring up against HRC, Palin and others. No, there is not a dime’s worth of difference Molly Ivins and nothing I see today changes that. Has everyone forgotten the shenanigans of the “free speech movement”? Charlie Manson (40 year anniversary) and his tribe were the ultimate nutso destroy-the-rich-and-famous along with corporate America. The only question may be:
Why does our country give rise to violent wing-nuts on both sides of the aisle?
How are they alike or different than “jihadists” and nut cases around the world?
Are individual nut cases wielding weapons much worse than armies at war and what they do to one another and the collateral damage they cause?

    • Agree 100% Jangles.

    • It’s very depressing. It seems there is a significant portion of the human race that needs to denigrate/oppress other people. What passes for humor/ideology can be so mean spirited. It’s all so senseless.

    • “How are they alike or different than “jihadists” and nut cases around the world?”

Maybe they aren’t any different. May be those Jihadists and nut cases are those countries fringe, like they are here.

  4. Are racist commenters any worse than those who attack women?

    • Nope. But when one is discussing one or the other, I don’t like to muddy the waters.

If I’m talking about a particular racist wanker, I’ll stick to the racist wanker. If I’m talking about a dirtball misogynist, I get really annoyed when someone injects “But what about the raycism?” And yeah, people do that – in both cases.

  5. People like that ought to be scorned by the entire community, and certainly not in public office.

And jangles: Why does our country give rise to violent wing-nuts on both sides of the aisle?

Because there is always a small percentage of the population that are fucking nuts, and no political ideology is immune from having them in their midst. But they are always useful for the other side to point to as “proof” that the other side is all wacko. Most liberals have nothing in common with the Weathermen, and most conservatives have nothing in common with Tim McVeigh.

    • Tim McVeigh and Terry Nichols did their thing in the center of Oklahoma City, in the heart of one of the most conservative states in the nation.

      • Yeah, and The Weathermen tended to be from liberal elite universities and liberal urban areas. So I think my comparison stands, no?

    • The frightening thing is just how mainstream the “fringe” can be. Perhaps I’m having one of my misanthropic days but it’s very sad that human cultures seem to require a whipping boy, a group to abuse and then laugh at that abuse.

    • always a small percentage of the population that are fucking nuts
LOL. Yup. And good point about how those idiots are very convenient for the other side, which ever side that is.

    • Most liberals have nothing in common with the Weathermen, and most conservatives have nothing in common with Tim McVeigh.

Unfortunately, I’ve heard plenty of purported liberals defending Weathermen Ayers & Dorhn. Random mayhem is just fine with them, as long as it’s for a “good cause.”

  6. Most ” isms” are lack of respect and understanding of other people. . It takes less time to belittle than to learn. “isms” cause everyone to lose.

This guy just do not get it and should be gone.

  7. This guy is looney tunes. Can’t they just get rid of him? Does he really have to resign? Does that mean his constituents are OK with these e-mails?

    • His constituents are PISSED and have been protesting at every council meeting demanding that he resign.

      • I hope they keep it up. This guy needs to GO.

      • I don’t get why he can’t just be fired then.

      • There has to be some kind of recall procedure, right?

        Dear Spammy,

Please, please post my comment. Thanks

  8. Interesting. Local news from NH has video of Obama’s bussed-in supporters to his townhall event.

Shot of the buses is at about 45 seconds in. The reporter notes at the end that the bussed-in folks are the ones being allowed inside, to participate in the townhall. All the protestors outside? Not so much.

    http://www.wmur.com/video/20358253/index.html

Whether you agree with the protestors or not, the meme being pushed by the media and Obama that those against are “astroturfed”, and those for it are just pure-as-the-driven-snow real grassroots is an outright propaganda lie.

    • Nice find. It was so stunningly obvious from his town hall meeting that the vast majority were on his team. It looked just like many of his campaign events.

  9. people are racist and sexist and elitist and stupid. None of those things is against the law and each is about equally offensive to me. If the people he represents want to un-elect him fine. Otherwise he sent some emails. He is not out lynching black people after hours.

  10. On a related topic:

While President Obama said this week that immigration reform will have to wait until next year, his Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, has been racheting up former Bush policies of punitive enforcement.

Uh, Jeralyn? Put down the Kool-aid and step away from the punchbowl. Okay?

Now answer this question – Who does Napolitano work for?

    • Who does number 2 work for? Who does number 2 work for? OK, the Austin Powers reference just jumped in my head. I think I might be slightly off. 🙂

    • Wait, so the rule is now that the president is not responsible for the actions and policies of his administration? Wow.

  11. The question is: Who is a bigger fatter racist, this guy or Bill Clinton? Come on, Obamanots, this is a timed test and you must show your work.

  12. Spammy, won’t let me comment! WHAAA! 😦

  13. RalphB, I like to keep the Obamatots busy.

  14. I would love for this man to come to my neighborhood and tell these jokes. I would think that he would find himself very sorry for those jokes. Racism like Sexism is never funny and people are hurt by both.
