    • Refreshing Honesty About Bank Loans
I actually appreciate this, from the HSBC AM Global Head of Responsible Investing, Stuart Kirk: “At a big bank like ours, what do people think the average loan length is?” he asked. “It is six years. What happens to the planet in year seven is actually irrelevant to our loan book. For coal, what happens in year seven is actually irrelevant.” That’s honesty. […]

Tabloid PDS blogging

Sarah and Todd Palin

Okay, this is truly bizarre.  First we have CNN stringer Dennis Zaki pushing the story that Sarah and Todd Palin are divorcing. His sources include a notorious PDS blog, multiple anonymous informants and the National Enquirer.

Zaki claims Sarah bought property in Montana and is going to move there with the kids.  There is lots of juicy trash, including allegations of multiple affairs on both sides and Sarah angrily throwing her wedding ring into a lake.  Real Jerry Springer stuff.

The story gets picked up by some lefty blogs, including Firedoglake and Hullaballoo. Digby at least acknowledges the tabloid nature of her post but the tone at FDL can only be described as gleeful.  The rumor begins to go viral.

So Sarah responds by having her spokeswoman (Meg Stapleton) post the following message on Sarah’s Facebook page:

Yet again, some so-called journalists have decided to make up a story. There is no truth to the recent “story” (and story is the correct term for this type of fiction) that the Palins are divorcing. The Palins remain married, committed to each other and their family, and have not purchased land in Montana (last week it was reported to be Long Island).

Less than one week ago, Governor Palin asked the media to “quit making things up.” We appreciate that the more professional journalists decided to question this story before repeating it.

Rightwing blogger Robert Stacy McCain receives this message from Sarah in response to his query about the story:

“Divorce Todd? Have you seen Todd? I may be just a renegade hockey mom, but I’m not blind!”

You would think that should end the story, but here comes Jonathan Martin at Politico:

By having her spokeswoman repeat the charges to rebut them in a public form, Palin effectively guaranteed coverage from the mainstream media that otherwise would not report claims attributed to unnamed sources on an anonymous blog.

It’s all Sarah’s fault for denying an untrue story!

She made us do it!

Even if you forget the fact that Zaki is a stringer for CNN it’s kinda disingenuous for a blogger to act like internet rumors are harmless, especially in the case of Sarah Palin. The PDS blogs started most or all of the vilest lies about Sarah, including the rape-kit smear, Trig-trutherism and the bogus ethics complaints.

I guess the Palinstalkers were upset that Sarah had “gone dark” since she left office last weekend.  They needed a hate- fix so they created a story.  If she hadn’t acted quickly to debunk the rumor they would be talking about her failure to deny it as confirmation that it was true.

  1. The Don Henley clip is from the Big Dawg’s inaugural.

  2. Oh first?

If the spokesperson had just said “current bullshit circulating on blogs about the Palins isn’t true”, she’d have been asked “which bullshit”? So her spokeswoman would have been caught in the middle.

  3. Nope, no first. Just saw your comment myiq.

  4. Has there already been a “Sarah is a lesbian” story? I love the big dawg and Don Henley.

    It was one year ago.

  5. I’m worried about Jeralyn. How did she miss posting on this?

    Maybe her head exploded.

    • She was too busy left talking.

    • Maybe she’s just charging her batteries…

Whoops! That could be taken as a sexual comment and it might get spread over the internets! 😯

    • Digby’s post and the comments were disgraceful. Why doesn’t she clean up her comment board? A few of those nasty comments serve no purpose and should be deleted.

    • Hah! Her loyal subject, squeaky, got the subject going in comments. As usual, squeaky went OTT with her insults against the only reasonable group who comment there, Cream City said she was leaving TalkLeft after having gotten her fill of squeaky, and this morning Jeralyn has cleaned the thread and removed all evidence that squeaky should be silenced through a solid banning.

That, and I do think Jeralyn is scared to death that she’s going to be made an example of by being one of the first to get sued for PDS. She scolded squeaky for posting the story as though it was true.

The good commenters aren’t even there today…none of them. They will probably be back, but it’s kind of funny to see the silence.

  6. I guess Sarah’s last speech where she said, given that soldiers died for journalists right to report, the least they can do in return is to just not make stuff up, kind of went over their heads.

I guess they’ve shown their character on this one. Like they haven’t before. Seriously, what’s wrong with these people. Sometimes you kind of want to look some of these people in the eye and ask them if they have a soul or not.

Mmm, hate, it’s what’s for dinner.

  7. I’d say they are trying to cover up the continuing mess created by Obama’s “stupid” remark and subsequent beer fest. Give the pack some other prey to tear.

Incidentally, The Daily Howler has a good attack on Talk Radio up. He points out that for years, the left has failed to create a framework from which people can feel safe and supported in criticising their whole style and method of making stories up to discredit political opponents. He doesn’t go far enough, of course. He doesn’t mention that the decades of neglect have meant the rot has spread. Now “liberal” bloggers, pundits and commentators, having seen how successful this sort of trash-talk is, employ it themselves. The collapse encompasses the entire political spectrum and has made objective, rigorious, honest discussion impossible. Which actually makes any attempt at a half-way decent democracy impossible too.

  8. OT: Interesting economic bit of info:
    A bit from the article:
U.S. Recession Worst Since Great Depression, Revised Data Show
Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) — The first 12 months of the U.S. recession saw the economy shrink more than twice as much as previously estimated, reflecting even bigger declines in consumer spending and housing, revised figures showed.

The world’s largest economy contracted 1.9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2007 to the last three months of 2008, compared with the 0.8 percent drop previously on the books, the Commerce Department said yesterday in Washington. Gross domestic product has shrunk 3.9 percent in the past year, the report said, indicating the worst slump since the Great Depression.

  9. This made me bust out laughing, Mt. Dew all over the screen…

“Divorce Todd? Have you seen Todd?”

Muhahahahahahaha. Go Sarah! I wish the media would just leave her alone, or, if she’s doing something political, focus on that.

  10. Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have endured more bullshit from total idiots then anyone should have to ever.
It would be nice if all the women in America for once got together and said enough. Take one day and all women just stop. Make a point.
I know it will never happen but damn what a concept.

Some times good things happen to good people.

  14. Poor B0bots! They are in dire need to throw stones and looking in the mirror is not an option!

  15. Respectfully submitted: I suggest that Digby’s disclaimer for it being tabloid crap, does not excuse her lapse of judgement in posting it at all.

This is her “daily red meat” post for her commenters. It’s her own “Village,” and she knows exactly what she’s doing.

If it’s tabloid crap, Digby, don’t post it at all.

If you post it, readers get to assume you’re becoming Jeralynn.

See it for what it is, folks.

  16. Anybody spreading this rumor is a tool- and should be ashamed of themselves… talk about desperate. Hard watching the Dear Leader crash-n-burn, I guess-

Palin’s resignation obviously puts yet more pressure on Obama to finally get some results, as the soaring rhetoric isn’t hypnotizing the plebes like it used to… and now there’s another viable alternative waiting in the wings.

Alaska was a pretty corrupt system until she stepped in. Her reforms took on entrenched politicians (inc. Republicans), a mafioso-style union boss, and Big Oil.

Wouldn’t it have been nice if Obama had been principled and brave enough to confront the corrupt Chicago Democratic Machine? Or shady political operators like Tony Rezko? Racist preachers? Instead of doing business with every last one of them?

IMO Palin could trounce him in 2012, when Americans would vote for the Gipper-in-Heels in droves- they’ll surely being looking for such an antidote to the Bolshevik con-artist who’s currently taking a wrecking-ball to this society.

No wonder the far-left moonbats -along with Team Obama’s David Plouffe and his internet squads- are out to destroy her.

    Go get em ‘Cuda-

  17. LOL, yes, many of us have taken a good look at Todd. I don’t predict divorce anytime soon.

  18. God- if they just (try to) pass single-payer health care, they don’t have to worry about 2012, Palin, Republicans, birthers and Republican sex scandals!

  19. The Palins have so much in common with the Clintons. I’m sure the Palins are staying married. They have an equal marriage.

  20. They forgot the part about the Secret Service having to dodge the lamps Sarah throws at Todd’s head. Honestly, the Republicans should just start accusing Obama of shooting himself and glomming Purple Hearts. The retrolicious classics never get old.
