PS:  RIP Natasha Richardson.  A truly great talent and vehement AIDS activist.

From one of my favorite movies, The Handmaid’s Tale (just noticed a part is NSFW):

Hump Day Afternoon Open Thread

This video is dedicated to all the Obama worshippers justifying their love for Mr. Teleprompter Jesus.  Too bad Ireland’s not laughing.  Keep holding on to that Precious!

On a more serious note, watch this next one, from HBO’s miniseries John Adams.  Jefferson, the flawed, but brilliant founding father that he is, WAS RIGHT.

What would Thomas Jefferson think of the AIG Bonus giveaway bonanza?   Would Hamilton be passing blame to a crony senator who actually tried to block the bonuses?

Open thread-it!

Wednesday: He thinks this is funny??

Smartass in Chief

Smartass in Chief

Dana Milbank at WaPo wrote a piece yesterday about the outrage building against the protected lifestyles of the rich and finance.  He tells of a moment in the White House when Barack Obama addressed the issue.  I won’t even go over the obvious point that Obama, Geithner, Summers and Congress should never have allowed the bonuses to happen in the first place while union workers were forced to negotiate their compensation in *their* contracts.  Here’s the thing that has me steaming:

As the president read from his teleprompter yesterday about “this outrage to the taxpayers who are keeping the company afloat,” he developed a tickle in his throat and tried to clear it. “Excuse me,” he joked. “I’m choked up with anger here.”

Hey, everyone likes a little jocularity to lighten a tense moment.  Dieing the WH fountains green yesterday was a hoot.  But faking outrage for the camera while making light of a very grim situation for the taxpayers is no joking matter.  I get the feeling that many Congresscritters are behaving similarly.  They are so removed from the hardships that average Americans are just starting to feel that they can only fake the ire for a few minutes, right before they give the finance industry everything it wants.  It’s almost like the congressional hearings are staged for the C-Span junkies and the short takes for the nightly news.  The Barney Franks and the Christopher Dodds force themselves to eat rare steaks for lunch before they take on the latest miscreant sitting before them.  Then, all of them, bankers included,  go out for cocktails in gorgeous glasses later.

This isn’t funny.  We’re talking about people’s lives.  This is our middle class lifestyle siphoned away from us by people who consider themselves somehow above all of the misery and hardship of the lower classes.  This is billions and trillions of hard earned, heavily taxed income going to people who have produced nothing and have gambled away our future retirements and children’s college educations.  There is nothing even remotely amusing about it. And we will remember in 2010 and 2012 when elections come around again.  We will remember those politicians who screwed us over.

Choke on that, Mr. President.

In other news:

  • The movement conservatives are at it again.  If you go to realclearpolitics these days, you will find an ad for Conservatives for Patients Rights warning you that you will are going to lose your right to choose your own doctor if any of the new proposals for reforming healthcare in this country go through.  Let me see, the last time I actually had a choice of doctor was about 16 years ago, right before they torched the first go around of health care reform.  That worked out so well, didn’t it?  Now, just about all of the doctors you want to see are off limit unless you pay for them yourself, even if you have health insurance.  And I’m sure the people *without* health insurance are all ears to this message.  At least they can still go to whatever doctor they want.  All Americans now have a choice of doctors!  Isn’t that great?!  Why would we want to ruin a good thing?  These people just never give up.  Let’s keep an eye on them.
  • The Obot Brigade will be out in force this weekend tracking people down and taking names. You will be required to pledge your support of Obama’s budget plans.  I’m sorry but does this remind anyone of China’s cultural revolution with scads of indoctrinated Red Guard denouncing their elders if they don’t participate in eliminating the artifacts of the old culture?  No, I’m not saying that Obama is a socialist or a communist or even has a bleeding heart.  It’s clear to me that he doesn’t.  But this idea of siccing the young and stupid on the rest of us in order for us to conform smacks of the worst kind of pernicious propaganda mixed with a form of McCarthyism.  What will happen to people who refuse to take the pledge?  Maybe we don’t have to worry too much about it.  The number of canvassing groups actually seems pretty small.  The closest meetup for me is 10 miles away and NJ is a dense state (in more ways than one).  Plus, this is district is definitely magenta.  They won’t find too many converts here but just to be on the safe side, I’m perfecting my Canadian accent.  “I don’t know aboot any pledges.  It’s a nice day for a hockey game, eh?”
