    • America Defeats Germany Again
There’s a good article in Der Spiegel on the German energy/industrial crisis which is worth your time. Basically industries which have high energy costs are being crushed. In particular this means chemical and automotive, both big in Germany, but extends far further. (Indeed, the chemical industry was essentially invented by Germany in the 19th century, and […]

When you can’t quite make yourself go to bed

An Open Thread

  1. Katiebird,

I can’t quite make myself go to bed. I’m so tired–too tired to sleep. Do you know that feeling?

    • Better watch out, BB — that’s a real photo of our dog….

I keep a stack of beloved books next to my bed. And I can pretty much always read myself to sleep.

How did things go at school today?

      • It went well. I had a meeting with my adviser, and I’m going to finish up my draft tomorrow. Hopefully after he looks at it one more time, I can send it out to the other readers.

        • I like hearing your updates. Will the other readers have a lot of feedback do you think?

          • I have no idea. Probably not that much, because my adviser is the one who really reads it. One of my readers has been sick, and she may not want to do much more than sign off on it. A prof. told me today that it’s highly unusual to fail the orals, and if you do it’s held against your adviser.

      • Very cute dog!

  2. Sen. Charles Grassley says the AIG executives should either quit or kill themselves.

“The first thing that would make me feel a little bit better towards them if they’d follow the Japanese model and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things — resign, or go commit suicide.”

    • Well, then next time i’d suggest he read the fine print before he okays gigantic bailouts to folks… maybe he and the other congress and senate critters should also do the honorable thing too

      • I’m pretty sure Grassley voted against the bailouts. But I agree about Barney Frank, et al.

    • The sepuku option for these asshats should be on network TV. Followed up by reruns on pay-per-view to pay for cleaning the carpet in the committtee room.

    • This should be the topic of the open thread!

  3. I heard on NPR that Obama poll numbers dropped by five points in the past week to 59%. That’s not too great for early in a presidency. And there are a bunch of people wondering if is he incompetent. Even Robert Reich is questioning.

    • Not only is he incompetent, he is a sociopath. Can you believe this:

WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization says he is “deeply disappointed and concerned” after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.

“It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan,” said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. “He says he is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.”

The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session said, “This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate ‘ to care for him who shall have borne the battle’ given that the United States government sent members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies. I say again that The American Legion does not and will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to treat the unique need of America’s veterans!”

      • This is fucking unamerican. I know that term is misused a lot but I haven’t used it before. Of course Obama may not know anyone who is a veteran except for some Pentagon general who’s too busy kissing his ass to tell him the truth.

How dare that man sit in the WH and break faith with those who have put their lives on the line for this country? He really is a sociopath.

        • As one who never even considered casting my vote for this immature, logic-free cheat, this doesn’t surprise me one little bit. He has no concept of military, conflict, injury, recovery, concern, commitment, honor, integrity, or wisdom.

He also doesn’t seem to grasp how the private insurance industry works. They can afford to absorb some, but certainly not all.

P.S. I’m still reeling over the short trailer I saw of a recent interview with Michelle O where she says the girls haven’t broken anything in the WH, but guests of theirs have! Adult guests? Drunk or sober? Obviously disrespectful. And MO thought it was funny.

        • I’m so outraged by this, I don’t even know what to say!

        • He “dare” because he has never served nor has he had to work for anything in his life. He doesn’t know a twit about suffering – 👿

      • that’s unbelievably immoral

      • Nothing really surprises me anymore when it comes to Bushbama. I’m just wondering if our country will survive 2 incompetent presidents in a row and if we will ever fully recover.

      • Well, he just lost the military vote. What an eye dee ten tango.

    • BB: Take a look here:

Those red and green lines are getting closer, yet again.

      • OMG! Only 4 points separating approve and disapprove. He is sinking like a stone.

    • Wondering if he’s incompetent? At this rate the proverbial light bulb may finally go off… after he’s run the country right off a cliff.

  4. I just came back from reading the 2004 interview with Elizabeth Warren that was linked to in the last post. Excellent. It is long, but good. The first time I saw her on TV, not even knowing who she was, I really like her.

btw, Bush cut my Dad out of his veteran health benefits. Since he is part of a small group and they are all around 90 years old now, there was not much outcry.

What BO wants to do is much worse.

    • Why would anyone join the service, knowing they are going to have to pay the bills if they lose a leg fighting for Cheney to control more oil?

  5. Katiebird:

Why instrument does your dog play? Does he have a band?

  6. myiq: I thought kb’s doggie was just a roadie.

  7. I’m pulling an all-nighter at the Ministry of Silly Walks tonight, and I will need to return to my labors shortly, but over on FanFiction.net, I ran across the phrase that a character looked “like someone who had been slapped in the face with a moist fish, wielded by a clown wearing only face paint and a dainty mauve thong”, and it occurred to me that…

“The Dainty Mauve Thongs” would be a great name for a rock band. 🙂

Maybe KB’s dog could use that as the name of its band.

    • Hmmmm….that sounds kind of familiar…has myiq been writing fan fiction???

      • Not unless Teh Evil Clown did not write the story I got the phris writing under the pseudonym

        • I do not know how in sulfuric hell I managed to post that. Dammit, the keys are too close together on this laptop–that’s the only thing wrong with it. 😡

What I was trying to say was more or less this:

The Evil Clown did not write the story from which I got that phrase, unless he has started using the pseudonym “Nodoka Miyazawa”.

Of course, “on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”

  8. Can I just say – I HATE NESTING!! I can never tell who’s around when. I don’t like having to click up, then click every single Recent Comment – in the last few (and different) posts and I STILL miss comments that weren’t “recent”!! It’s frustrating, time consuming and it seems to me the “flow” is actually worse. I don’t mind change. I actually like to do things differently to keep from being bored, but I don’t think this is a good thing for the community here. It’s not the same.

Also, it seems like it would be a nightmare for the moderators to keep up with any nasty tr0lls, but maybe the tr0lls not around much anymore. I dunno know…

  9. What, did KB say the word “insomnia”?

I have decided that you become a member of the insomniac club when you reach your mid-40’s.

  10. I dont know what is going around for a flu this year but I wouldnt wish it on my worst enemy….

  11. GAgal…I hate nesting too!

  12. Cute dog, katiebird, I had one just like it years ago. Smartest thing ever, except for the fact he was convinced he could take on big dogs.

    Also, he’s not a roadie – he’s the general dogsbody…

    Thankyou, thankyou 🙂

  13. nesting is a time-sucking bummer.

Katiebird that dog looks like one happy bundle of love!

  14. Why are tabloids abandoning A-Rod and Rhianna and obsessing instead on AIG?

  15. This is an old article, you may have read it before, but if you want to read something that won’t let you sleep, try it:

  16. Could it possibly be because there has been a hew and cry from the masses about their “pigitry”

  17. Hahahahaha! Tim Geithner is trying to sell his house and may have to take a loss.

  18. The top ten foreclosure states. Look at Nevada!

    1. Nevada: 1 in 70 homes

    2. Arizona: 1 in 147 homes

    3. California: 1 in 165 homes

    4. Florida: 1 in 188 homes

    5. Idaho: 1 in 358 homes

    6. Michigan: 1 in 360 homes

    7. Illinois: 1 in 369 homes

    8. Georgia: 1 in 389 homes

    9. Oregon: 1 in 446 homes

    10. Ohio: 1 in 451 homes

    • Nevada 1 in 70. OMG, that’s practically armegeddon.

And Idaho? There was a boom in Idaho?

      • RalphB
If you take a look at the picutre of Idaho the biggest area of forclosure is Boise. I was there two summers ago and there was a HUGE contruction boom going on. Nice town Boise. I thought about moving there after my visit.
