Obama responds to Krugman

Okay, not really.

Well, it’s really Obama talking, but he’s not talking to Krugman.

  2. lol!

  3. Obama today

“You’ve got some economists and some folks who think they’re economists. By the way, these days everybody thinks they’re economists,” he joked.

You’ve got some presidents and some folks who think they’re president. By the way, these days with standards this low anyone could be president. Obama has the least experience of any POTUS in history. It shows.

I thought I had accepted him and moved on. I have not. He makes me grow angry with every speech. Last night when he said “I’m Fired Up”. I thought. what the heck has this country elected?

  4. Last night when he said “I’m Fired Up”. I thought. what the heck has this country elected?

    An arsonist?

  5. afrocity — I’m embarrassed by him too — any you know I didn’t vote for him. I’m embarrassed that the people in this country were so stupid to vote for him — this is our representative to the rest of the world? A guy who says “I screwed up?” “I’m fired up” and ridiculous platitudes too numerous to count (i.e., “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for;” etc).
This country has become full of intellectual pygmies.

I want to know which “economists” The Empty Suit is listening to. And you’re right, AfroCity. Obama’s quote could also be used to describe him. We had some people who had the qualifications to be a successful president and Obama who thought he could be a successful president. Bush has set the bar so low that anyone with a college degree from a good school could come off as a “qualified” candidate for president as long as HE (women are still held to a higher standard) is the kind of guy you can picture yourself having a beer with. WE ARE DOOMED.

  7. Yes, Angie, and they believe themselves to be intellectual giants…

I’m not sure what I can reasonably hope for at this point, maybe that people don’t starve to death while obama gets his OJT.

  8. In moderation

  9. I was just noticing how Krugman, Murdoch and Mr Fish seem to be on the same page – and it’s not with Obama either
    http://edgeoforever.wordpress.com/2009/02/06/the-tabloids-and-mr-fish/

  10. Angie, it is embarrassing. But those who voted for Obama over Clinton and pushed that incompetent, arrogant, POS down our throats should feel more than embarrassed — they should feel ashamed.

  11. Jules – somehow, some way, it was all Hillary’s fault that they didn’t pick her. Didn’t you get the memo?

    :-p

  12. Off Topic – But how about a front page shoutout to Pat Summit:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/dailyfix/2009/02/06/pat-summitt-celebrates-grand-achievement/

  13. Here’s a reader comment of mine on today’s NYTimes political caucus blog, re Magic O’s “evil stallers” speech:

Yes, we need action and we need it now. Too bad the only option on the table is a badly flawed ’stimulus’ bill consisting largely of political paybacks, shopping lists, and tax cuts, with very, very little in the way of job creation. This bill may be ‘better than nothing’, but it could have been one hell of a lot better had we elected a president with a solid economic philosophy, a track record of accomplishment in public service, and evidence of a steel spine. Instead, thanks to the NYTimes, among many others, we’ve installed a media mirage in the White House. The bill for the latter is now coming due, and it is stimulating nothing so much as fear of failure on an immense scale.

  14. Wow, DaveO – that’s amazing!

  15. Kat5, I’m surprised the NYTimes published your comment. Congrats.

  16. Yes, Kat5 – very well-done.

    Same story, different book.

Supporters (aka dummies) of obama will be as supportive and blind as bushbots; eventually EVENTUALLY some of the outliers will grow to hate uhbama and see him for what he is, but it’s a little late now, isn’t it.

  18. madamab: LOL. Yes, Hillary is a conveeenient scapegoat for all their failures.

  19. destardi: You are so right about that.

  20. what do you call 5,000 bi-partisan villagers at the bottom of the sea?

    A good start!

By next january will we be awash in economic turmoil that we will be saying “Its Revolution Time?”

I see millions marching on Washington carring orange banners with PUMAs on them as villagers baracade themselves on capital hill and the white house.

But this will not be a revoluton to overthrow the constitution and rule of Law in America it will be a revolution to restore it!

  21. I guess I’m finally realizing that nothing is really going to change. As TRK said on the last thread, I was really hoping against hope that Obama was going to be better than I thought. Instead, everything I believed would happen is happening.

Accepting that the two-party political system is irretrievably broken has given me a measure of peace. I now believe 100% that the ONLY way to really turn this country around is to enact the 30% Solution and reach equal representation for women. We are the only ones that can reverse this UniParty Disaster.

I may not see this happen in my lifetime, but I am committed to doing whatever I can to help America realize its potential by fully liberating its female population from economic and reproductive slavery.

  22. madamab, me too. Why on earth would we want to be right? Contrary to the bad rap the obots give us, we actually care about this country. I never expected to see Obama fall apart so quickly. He is completely unprepared for this job and he is, apparently, not a quick study.

    Onward 30%!

  23. Amen gxm17!

  24. And in the form of casualties 480 members of congress sent to the happy hills home for the incompetent where a continous drip of hopium will keep silly ass grins on their faces and the gears of their brains from working….

Oh and the wallstreet crowd that created this mess the same fate pampers and company too….

Hillary will be to busy fixing this mess to care about the special treatment the new admistrater of the Happy Hills Home desides to preform on these dull bags!

  25. BO is going to Camp David this weekend. I guess the WH is too hot.

  26. birdgal – What’s he up to there?

  27. We criticized the car execs for flying to DC in their private jets, but last night Obama took Air Force ONE, a 747 for a ten minute flight last night to be applauded by his followers.

Suffice to say, President Barack Obama likes his new ride.

“It’s pretty nice,” he told House Democrats Thursday in an after-dinner speech here. “Thank you for giving me a reason to use Air Force One.”

The president spoke after a 31-minute maiden voyage on the specially outfitted 747 that will be his airborne home and office for the next four years.

Moments before taking off from Andrews Air Force Base, Obama visited the press cabin in the rear of the plane to show reporters his Air Force crew launch jacket, his name stitched on the breast.

“What do you think about this spiffy ride?” he asked reporters. “It’s not bad.”

  28. I think he will abdicate when it gets really bad.

  29. birdgal- Is he taking Air Force One there? You know that he just wants to check out all of his new toys.

  30. Isolde- He will want to spend more time with his family.

  31. isolde, I think he will too. At least I hope he will. He just isn’t ready and the world is too much of a mess for a boy king.

  32. Birdgal,

I am surprised to see BO go to Camp David. That was a Repub hangout and Clinton abandoned it. Bush 2.0 revived it.

Seems Obama is Bush 3.0. But in all fairness FDR was responsible for Camp David’s creation.

  33. OMG afrocity. He is such an immature embarrassment. I’m so sorry he is the first “black” president and has destroyed what should be such a proud moment for America.

  34. Honora, or some rare health problem. Maybe leprosy since he is from Hawaii.

  35. Isolde – LOL!

  36. Spiffy ride?!?!?!

Have these mofo’s looked around, people are f$cking homeless?!!!??? It just makes me want to spit and rant, I get so d@mn mad.

What because it just really ain’t hurting the upper echelon everything is going to be okay? This stimulus package is like putting a band aid on a brain tumor. Jeez! damn! hell!

So the true democrats and liberals will be helping the people by volunteering and allowing our unemployed families to move in with us. But what the hell, who gives a sh!t, as long as he has a spiffy ride and the CEO’s that brought us to this get a decent bonus.

  37. It is from Politico”

Obama could take advantage of another perk of the office this weekend, potentially traveling to Camp David for the first time …

… according to White House aides.

An announcement is expected later Friday.

No word on whether Obama will bring any recalcitrant senators with him to the presidential retreat in Maryland’s Catoctin Mountains.

A weekend in Camp David would be his first overnight trip since taking the office 17 days ago.

Oh my, how many vacations had this guy taken? He is working real hard on the stimulus package. Schmoozer is what he does best.

  38. Did I just hear that Feinstein has turned off on the stimulus package as well? Thought I heard a reporter ask that question of Gibbs just now but my phone rang in the meantime.

  39. Want to bet that Obama passes Bush on the number of vacations per term?

  40. A vacation already?

    Embarrassing.

  41. A vacation in the middle of a crisis, now that is a Bushism.

  42. A vacation in the middle of a crisis, now that is a Bushism.

Nah, that is just plain selfish and ego driven. Who gives a rat’s ass about the rest of us as long as you can bear the title of Commander in Chief. The goal was the prize.

  43. He really is like a twelve-year-old playing with a train set.

  44. I just read that the latest cuts to the stimulus plan will be as follows:

Head Start, Education for the Disadvantaged, School improvement, Child Nutrition, Firefighters, Transportation Security Administration, Coast Guard, Prisons, COPS Hiring, Violence Against Women, NASA, NSF, Western Area Power Administration, CDC, Food Stamps

Reduction of 80 billion to cut back these items.

SOme of these things are desperately needed!!!

Food stamps- people have no jobs.
    Head start – self explanatory.
Child nutrition – again self explanatory

VAWA – Why should they care if women get beaten?

I won’t say more, I am afraid of another rant.

    Here is the site:

  45. Hillary is 44 has been working hard and producing some really great posts. Daily posts were slowing down last year but now Admin is posting everyday: http://www.hillaryis44.org

  46. Ah jeez Kim.

  47. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/05/EDGO15O7A8.DTL

catch that … David Sirota just called obama’s team ‘rivals’ a team of yes-men “zombies”

  48. I can’t believe he is going out of town during this economic crisis.

  49. Kat – Oooh!

Obama’s national security team, for instance, includes not a single Iraq war opponent. The president has not only retained President George W. Bush’s defense secretary, Robert Gates, but also 150 other Bush Pentagon appointees. (WOW!) The only “rivalry” is between those who back increasing the already bloated defense budget by an absurd amount and those who aim to boost it by a ludicrous amount.

But where was Sexy Sirota during the primaries? Calling Hillary a tool of the corporations and vehemently supporting Obama.

There are no prizes for getting it right after the fact, Mr. Sirota.

  50. TheRealKim, on February 6th, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Cutting off Acorn would save them 5 billion.

  51. “Last night when he said “I’m Fired Up”. I thought. what the heck has this country elected?”

Did he spend anytime doing tikki torch dancing in Hawaii?

  52. ooh, let me answer that which economist one with a quote via that sirota linkie above:

“At the top is Lawrence Summers, the director of Obama’s National Economic Council. As President Bill Clinton’s Treasury secretary in the late 1990s, Summers worked with his deputy, Timothy Geithner (now Obama’s Treasury secretary), and Clinton aide Rahm Emanuel (now Obama’s chief of staff) to champion job-killing trade deals and deregulation that Obama Commerce Secretary Judd Gregg helped shepherd through Congress as a Republican senator. Now, this pinstriped band of brothers is proposing a “cash for trash” scheme that would force the public to guarantee the financial industry’s bad loans. It’s another ploy “to hand taxpayer dollars to the banks through a variety of complex mechanisms,” says economist Dean Baker – and noticeably absent is anything even resembling a “rival” voice inside the White House.

That’s not an oversight. From former federal officials like Robert Reich and Brooksley Born, to Nobel prize-winning economists like Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman, to business leaders like Leo Hindery Jr., there’s no shortage of qualified experts who have challenged market fundamentalism. But they have been barred from an administration focused on ideological purity. In Hindery’s case, the blacklisting was explicit. Despite this venture capitalist establishing a well-respected think tank and serving as a top economic adviser to Obama’s campaign, Politico.com reports that “Obama’s aides appear never to have taken his bid (for an administration post) seriously.” Why? Because he “set himself up in opposition” to Wall Street’s agenda.”

  53. Downticket – and how about removing that 700 million for Viagra?! Unless Fuzzy was kidding about that!

  54. madamb: isn’t what sirota is saying now what we’ve been saying for months? sheesh, now the damage is being done, they finally figure it out?

Right, no rest for the wicked that are finally getting it …

  55. I thought that 45% of the stimulus was tax cuts, and less that half of that was tax cuts for poor and middle class folks. Why can’t they cut some of these tax cuts for the wealthy, especially now that they are NOT going to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy that are already in place?

  56. Kat – Exactly!

Even that stuff about the deregulators and picking real liberal economists has been said by you and other PUMAs long before Sirota figured it out – and it didn’t always take an economist to see which way the wind was blowing.

Shamelessly tooting my own horn from November 9

  57. Does everyone remember Bill Clinton saying with Hillary the perks of the office, particularly Air Force One, would not go to her head. She’s been there, done that. But that wouldn’t be true for others, he said. He talked about that alot.

  58. KendallJ – I thought the Repubs were mad because there were “only” 33% tax cuts in the package. Theirs had 40% tax cuts.

    Is that so yesterday’s news?

  59. The phony character of this president will soon start to unravel. As afrocity said earlier, this is the most unqualified man elected to the office. Living in the White House, riding in Air force one, camp david, the pomp and splendour of the office is making him as excited as a kid at Disneyland. When in comes to hard work and thinking beyond his photo-ops , he falls flat on his face. For a man who never did anything in his life except self-promoting himself , this was to be expected. He is just not ready and never ever was.

And the ever obsequioius media plays its part. Has there ever been such servile coverage of any president’s first air force one ride or Camp David weekend ?

  60. madamab, on February 6th, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Think fuzzy was kidding about that.

  61. Isn’t ‘Im fired up” an Amway slogan??

  62. Is “I’m fired up” sort of like “Bring it on?” Obama is all fired up for…what? A long weekend at Camp David with more $100/lb steaks for dinner?

  63. He has only been in office 3 weeks and he has to go to a spa to ‘plan’ and now to Camp David to relax. Hell, I am 15 years older than him and I don’t take that much time off to relax. What a f#cking wimp.

  64. Catarina – Obamway! LOL!

  65. Is it too disrespectful to call the President a sh!thead?

  66. What is up with Obama putting Penny Pritzger on the economic advisory board that was announced today? She could not even run the family bank, exceot straight into the ground! He is a blooming IDIOT. God help us all over the next 4 years.

  67. FL voter
    hardly

  68. Penny Pritzker was a huge contributor to his campaign. Payback time.

  69. What a f#cking wimp.

Give him a break! This is the most consecutive days he’s worked since . . . ever.

  70. Has obama reclaimed America yet?

  71. “This bill may be ‘better than nothing’, but it could have been one hell of a lot better had we elected a president with a solid economic philosophy, a track record of accomplishment in public service, and evidence of a steel spine. ”

But we didn’t HAAAAAVE one of those!!!

    Oh wait…

  72. Penny Pritzker was a huge contributor to his campaign.

The rich and shameless didn’t donate to Obama’s campaign, they invested in America.

  73. Here is the board:
    * William H. Donaldson, Chairman, SEC
    * Roger W. Ferguson, Jr., President & CEO, TIAA-CREF (Google TIAA-CREF problems)
    * Robert Wolf, Chairman & CEO, UBS Group Americas (UBS subprime problems)
    * David F. Swensen, CIO, Yale University
    * Mark T. Gallogly, Founder & Managing Partner, Centerbridge Partners L.P.
    * Penny Pritzker, Chairman & Founder, Pritzker Realty Group
    * John Doerr, Partner, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers
    * Jim Owens, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar Inc.

    * Laura D’Andrea Tyson, Dean, Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley
    * Martin Feldstein, George F. Baker Professor of Economics, Harvard University
    * Jeffrey R. Immelt, CEO, GE

  74. Myiq – and she expects a big ROI.

  75. New post up. I have to run along, but thought you could use some comic relief. 🙂

  76. why is it that every time i hear about Obama fired up, I think of those hawaii tiki torch dances …. sheesh

  77. Martin FELDSTEIN?

  78. Penny Pritzer is the originator of the subprime mortgage concept. The SubPrime Queen was advising him throughout the campaign. She withdrew her name from consideration for a cabinet post. She didn’t want anyone looking too closely at her family finances and the penalties she/they had to pay for the banking shady dealing fiasco.

  79. Jeffrey IMMELT? Good to know NBC is represented on the Board. Geesh. There’s no shortage of advisory teams:

The Economic Recovery Advisory Board led by Volker
The Council of Economic Advisors led by Christina Romer
The National Economic Council led by Larry Summers
The global economic team at State
    The economic team at Treasury
The economic team at the Fed
    The people at OMB

It’ll take Barry a good year to get to know everyone. Will he know how to separate wheat from chaff. Doubt it.

  80. What’s with that finger again????

  81. Hadn’t been here in a while. Wonderful comments; brought smiles to my face more than once. Thank you.
