So I was alerted to the Planned Parenthood and NY NOW statement regarding their worries and position on the Family Planning Provisions being stripped from the Stimulus Package. I thought it was good that they were speaking out against it, but when I read the actual statement there was a glaring omission, see if you can figure it out.
Here is Planned Parenthoods response:
Dear *****,
I’m stunned. We’ve just confirmed news reports that provisions to expand access to affordable family planning will be stripped from the economic stimulus bill. Removing this provision is a betrayal of millions of low-income women, and it will place an even greater burden on state budgets that are already strained to the breaking point.
We need you to take action now by calling the White House and voicing your support for the Medicaid Family Planning State Option.
Call the White House comment line at 202-456-1111 to speak out now — click here for more details on what to say, and to let us know you called.
I was frustrated when I saw a parade of legislators and talking heads on television this weekend spreading false information about this commonsense bill. House Minority Leader John Boehner even claimed that the provision would cost millions of dollars — when the fact is it would save the federal government $700 million over 10 years.I was even more shocked to read today that congressional leaders have taken these false arguments seriously and will remove family planning provisions from the stimulus bill. It’s time for Washington to hear from the millions of Americans who support commonsense policies that invest in health care and help ease the economic downturn.
Call the White House at 202-456-1111 — it’s a quick and easy way to make a big impact. Click here for more details on what to say, and to report back to Planned Parenthood on your call. (A phone call is the best way to make your voice heard, but if you can’t make the call, you can send an email here.)
Let me be clear. The Medicaid Family Planning State Option is a simple way to make health care affordable for millions of Americans. It would do two important things:
It would allow millions of women to obtain basic health care. It would extend safety-net health care coverage for millions who are losing their jobs and health insurance in the economic downturn. Studies estimate that 2.3 million low-income women would receive coverage under this provision by 2014, and 500,000 women would be able to avoid unintended pregnancies. In these difficult times, this provision would save states money. State budgets are being squeezed by the economic downturn, just as millions are losing their jobs and health insurance. The Medicaid Family Planning State Option not only would help states extend their coverage, it would generate savings for states and the federal government by expanding access to preventive care.
Please, take two minutes now to help us raise a public outcry. Click here for details you can use on your call, and to let us know you spoke out.
Thank you so much for speaking out, and please stay tuned for more details on this critical issue.
Sincerely,
Cecile Richards, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America
Here is NY NOW’s response:
NOW-NYS Decries Dropping Life-saving Family Planning provisions from Stimulus-Package
The Obama Economic Stimulus Package that Congress hopes to pass includes providing the states with Medicaid matching funds to cover such conditions as diabetes, heart surgery and ongoing health maintenance like asthma medication. Until today, the Package also included funds to help poor women afford family planning.
Although many conservatives say they firmly support family planning, this is certainly not the case in today’s Congress. House Republican leaders ridiculed the stimulus package for including family planning and now, in the name of “bipartisan compromise’ the President and Congressional Democratic leaders would rather switch than fight for poor women’s reproductive health.
Despite the fact that safe birth control is used by – and considered acceptable to – most Americans, and in spite of the fact that the prevailing majority attitude is that it is irresponsible to have sex without contraception unless pregnancy is intended, conservative Republicans have now prevailed, pressuring President Obama and the Congress to remove contraceptive funding from the Stimulus Package. NY NOW, proud to be “partisan” for ALL women, does not consider this some gesture of common ground but rather a cave in to the bombastic and untruthful statements of the anti-women Republican House leaders.
Meanwhile, because it is generally acknowledged worldwide that family planning has a positive effect on family health and economic development, President Obama is restoring UNPFA (International Family Planning funds), and has lifted the Bush Administration’s Global Gag Rule that banned US funds to organizations who even counseled about abortion. We of NOW-New York State say it is beyond hypocrisy to restore international family planning funds while eliminating such monies for poor women in the United States.
Our Congress is prepared to roll over and abandon women’s reproductive health even when women’s lives are literally hanging in the balance. Surely this is not the time for our allies to sit back, taking the expedient route of eliminating “contentious” women’s issues from the discussion. Are we only pretending we have a government friendly to women. Indeed, in spite of promises to the contrary, women’s bodies are being held hostage once again.

Is it obvious to anyone else??? Not one mention of Barack Obama and his willingness to throw this provision under the bus. Until Women’s Groups who assume to speak for women begin to hold the correct party responsible, we will not achieve one dang thing.
Democrats hold majorities in both houses and the executive branch. There was no reason to strip this from the stimulus plan.
HOLD the person who made this concession accountable – THE PRESIDENT – BARACK OBAMA. Then women may become more engaged in the efforts of these women’s groups.

Pappas is pretty clear about Obama’s hypocrisy:
Meanwhile, because it is generally acknowledged worldwide that family planning has a positive effect on family health and economic development, President Obama is restoring UNPFA (International Family Planning funds), and has lifted the Bush Administration’s Global Gag Rule that banned US funds to organizations who even counseled about abortion. We of NOW-New York State say it is beyond hypocrisy to restore international family planning funds while eliminating such monies for poor women in the United States.
She’s not exactly beating around the bush.
Wow, and not just Obama, but the Democrats in Congress who don’t need the Repub to pass this with the provision in place. This is unbelievable. They are going to blame republicans even though they are not responsible AND PEOPLE WILL NOT GET IT.
NY Now’s statement mentions the President’s and the Congress’s willingness to cave:
NY Now also continued to support Hillary when other women’s groups endorsed Obama. They went against the national NOW.
Oh an Super Feminist comes to the …. almost rescue of women… He says, *drats sorry you sweeties, I gotta get my yayas out and court them Republicans. *
But Ms. Magazine says they are sure he didn’t mean it, and it was those horrible mean men in the GOP that made him do it because in his heart he weally lubs his sweeties….
Thank you, taggles, for an excellent post!
This is exactly why feminists are so frustrated with NOW and Planned Parenthood. They backed Barack Obama and slammed Sarah Palin, and now they are desperately covering their *sses by pretending this new misogyny from The One is coming from the Republicans.
This has nothing to do with party and everything to do with patriarchy. Obama could have said “f*ck you, I won” to the anti-freedom advocates in Congress, but he didn’t.
It’s pretty obvious he agrees with the fundiegelicals here. Birth control is wrong and shouldn’t be supported by the government.
Isn’t it ironic that this is why they told us Sarah Palin wasn’t a feminist (not that it was true, but it was one of their arguments)? Her supposedly retrograde stance on birth control?
I’ll bet after four years of this nonsense, La Sarah is going to look pretty good to me.
Now and Planned Parenthood are now backtracking — They are guilty of playing politics — i wonder what lies that Obama told them to get their support, and I bet he is breaking everyone of them — Oh yeah, he did through a bone with the gag order…
OT Breaking news
the folks at The National Science Foundation are porn freaks.
Busted!
BB – you’re right, but they still blame Republicans.
Um, no. This came from Obama and the Dems. They are 100% in charge now.
No excuses.
Blame it on the Republicans-knee-jerk logic.
True, madamab. I just think NY Now has stood up to the national quite a bit.
I think Marcia Pappas did go further than Planned Parenthood, but she was still wobbly and making excuses.
There is no excuse for this.
Women’s groups need to hold the President accountable. He is the one who caved and told Leadership to can the provision.
Is it my tin foil parka
or does it seem like these groups have been hijacked by fundies trying to end reproductive privacy for women?
Those letters are chilling!

I am asking for more and I think it’s necessary.
I agree BB. I did appreciate their standing up to the national chapter.
They still aren’t going far enough for me, though.
Cecile Richards feigning *shock*?
Pumas aren’t shocked-we knew Obama was a liar and would screw women over.
Why hasn’t he undone Bush’s “Conscience” rule?
That should have been first, not the “Gag” order.
That was just a bone he threw and he got away that too!
catarina – I could NOT agree more. He has not even appointed his HHS Secretary yet, who is the one who would overturn that rule AFAIK.
What’s the delay? What’s going on with Daschle? Is it because Daschle is a lobbyist and Obama supposedly hates them?
Whoops! Spammy caught me for some reason.
I just heard from my obot friend of 40 years….” give him time!” That will be thier chant for years to come
Thanks for the post!!
I will be calling the #’s listed A.S.A.P.!!
I don’t know how you all feel about the “Stimulate Nothing Plan”
Ugh..!!!!
hi tpt/ny!
Sigh. We elected Bush-Reagan. The only thing that plan will stimulate will be the bank accounts of all Obie’s rich buddies.
tp
Acorn will continue to be endowed. Look for them next presidential election. they’ll be around.
madamab
what’s up with Daschle?
Are they waiting for a world event to dominate the news so they can shove Daschle through while the media looks the other way?
I am shocked. Shocked I tell you! And appalled that Obama would cave in to Republicans. Could he be positioning himself for 2012? Certainly not. He is, after all, above reproach.
And, didn’t he just appear on Ms. Magazine as “Super Feminist”? How could this be?
We bitter, old, post menopausal women must have it wrong.
But, really, why does this have to be part of the stimulus package? Why isn’t it just normal funding?
When Democrats take the position that they have to cater to the right wing or, horror of horrors, someone might actually think they are Democrats, they are setting themselves up to lose. The Republicans never gave a rat’s ass what we thought during the Bush administration. That’s what winning both houses and the executive branch is all about, you idiots! It’s a mandate from the people that we want you to lead like Democrats!
We may as well have had President Romney in charge.
Or President Huckabee.
that is so sad!
So my response to NOW and PP goes something like this —
Who’s in charge of Congress? DEMOCRATS
Who’s President? OBAMA
Republicans at fault, my a$$.
We PUMAs tried to tell you PP and NOW that Barky would not hold to his promises to women because he didn’t care one whit about them, as exemplified in his disparate employment and salaries in his own senatorial office. But you didn’t listen because you were getting big bucks from Soros. You could have stood up for women and supported Hillary but instead you told us that Big Daddy Obama would take care of our needs when he was president.
Whose crying now? PP and NOW
Whenever an Obot says to you “Give him time” remind that person that many people used this excuse when dealing with abolitionists.
Slavery? Give the government time – they’ll get rid of slavery when the time is right.
P.S. The original idea (shared by Lincoln) was to send all the slaves back to Africa. At the right time.
I don’t think our supposed Dem leaders even know what a Dem is at this point…. So they have both houses now and the white house, but STILL have to bow down to the GOP? WTF? There aren’t parties anymore….just classes
You ask, “What’s up with Daschle?”
The dirty little secret is that Daschle, not to be denied, has an office in the West Wing. He’s going to be HHS Secretary and Healthcare Czar. Czarina status gives him the WW office. It also gives him a place to play politics with policy behind the scenes and with the imprimatur of Teh One.
taggles and madamab,
Agreed! They are not doing nearly enough. Their pleas are a joke at this point.
I can’t wait to read thier shock down the road when Obama appoints a right winger to the Supreme Court.
Daschle in the White House? We are truly fucked on health care. I’m going to take up voodoo… it’s all I will be able to afford.
BB, I do agree and have questioned my putting NY NOW’s statement in the post.
When I read it, it still appears they are making excuses for Obama. I want stronger wording. It is Obama that pulled the plug on this. He told Leaders to can the provision.
It is not the powerless Republicans fault. I wonder if any thinks Republicans would reverse such a measure that served their political ideology?
Obama’s easy willingness to pull the plug on this is what is horrifying. Not the republicans asking him too.
taggles,
I agree with you. It was just my “fairness reflex.” I remembered that NY Now refused to endorse Obama when the national did. But once Hillary was all, they all caved.
They got what they supported. A weak, corporate, Reagan clone.
Anyone who backed backtrack will never admit that the coming agenda is his fault. They would have to then look at themselves in the mirror and realize what they did to this country.
Maybe I am old fashioned in some things but I have a problem with the women that backed him. They should have know better.
Chorus singing of “Who’s Sorry Now” will not make them understand what they did because they do not want to.
It sure will make us feel better though and that is a good thing.

Catarina,
Maybe I should make that “weak, corporate Reaganite clown.” But I don’t want to hurt myiq’s feelings.
Sorry for being O/T here, but I just had to respond to the thread below, particularly BB’s comment:
And no, I’m simply not an exception for my generation. Like most of us, I grew up in an upwardly mobile home and ended up not being able to buy a house and support a familiy like my parents did.
Can we please stop the piling on re the boomer generation? Like BB, I’m not only angry about all the breezy, often cutting, generalizations about our generation, I’m also hurt and deeply disappointed. I mean, it’s not as if we don’t have millions of Obots wanting to push us off a cliff. Do they really need any more encouragement?
Believe it or not, there was a time when many of us boomers were deeply idealistic. Some of us have even managed to hang onto the greater share of our ideals, none of which involve piling up big bucks. This isn’t about generational identity, y’all. It’s about a huge, non-age specific class divide. A great many boomers could now be classified as “upper poor” and getting poorer each day. Insult added to injury is not much of a balm for this increasingly large population, which just happens to include me.
I agree with whoever said it upthread, this should not even be in the stimulus package. This needs to be a given, especially with a dem in office ( 😉 )
TAGGLES –
You beat me to it!
I was just writing a post on that!
Taggles:
I was writing exactly how they can sing Obama praises when it came to the gag rule last week…
BUT DON’T ADDRESS HIM HEAD TO HEAD on the stimulus cut – and it was his fault!
BTW: Naral has NOT released a statement yet, that I know of.
Sorry SM, please post yours. I leave mine pretty open ended. I am sure it will be a great complement, to what I have written.

If they have been hijacked, it began when Nancy Keenan became president of NARAL.
Yesterday one of the head honchos on my paper (and Obama supporter) complained that Pelosi and Reid were keeping Obama from working with Republicans to get things done.
So that’s the rallying cry. If Democrats try to fight him, he still comes out smelling like a rose. I don’t think he’s worried at all about losing bleeding heart liberals or the women’s vote.
No…I’ll pick up where you left off – it’ll be the continuation of yours – I’m not done yet anyways….
Maybe in another 1/2 hr or 45 minutes?
Excellent post.
OT, but as a health-care worker who IS responsible, I took objection to this insult by B0:
‘ In his remarks, Obama called on everyone – corporate executives and factory floor workers, educators and engineers, health care professionals and elected officials – to abandon a “sense of irresponsibility that prevailed from Wall Street to Washington.” ‘
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/text/2008666242_apobamaeconomy.html
I don’t think the factory workers, educators, or engineers have been irresponsible either. Speak for yourself, Barack.
GREAT SM! I can’t wait to read it!
Kat5 there is alot more I could say on that subject. For Instance, how many of us expected to live out our lives like our parents, married and with a family. But divorce became absolutely wonderful with the boomers, leaving a lot of women traded in on newer models. But I will shut up about it, I promise. 😀

Cat: They’re not waiting for the next election. He is going to set up “Organization for America,” planting two full-time paid employees in EVERY CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT to “push through his agenda,” fundraise, and begin the campaign for 2012 now…
Re: this scapegoating Republicans crap: that’s EXACTLY why he is meeting with them under the guise of “bipartisanship.” The truth is: he doesn’t NEED their votes–what he needs from them is cover so he doesn’t have to take (political) responsibility for anything he does. He is always angling for Obama–doing what’s right is not his first priority, as we have seen again and again. Hillary would make the call and take the heat, which is why she is so “divisive.”
And I also agree with RKim: Pelosi is ham-handed even putting this IN the stimulus package. She is giving the Republicans a political mallet regarding pork etc. Fight for health care AS health care–don’t try to sneak it in the back door because you don’t have the guts to take it on. The Dems are weenies.
Taggles – great minds think alike!
Why is family planning in the stimulus package? Did we cover this and I missed it? Can someone tell me the answer?
I believe it has been put forth as legislation with in the past two years, but nope no passage. Wonder why??
I had a bot tell me yesterday that he thinks Pelosi and Reid will have to go, because they are simply holding Obie-wan back in making real progress. I upchucked, just a little.
I haven’t read the whole thing, but have heard in flipping through channels (trying to avoid the obama fever) that the package is loaded with pork. Does anyone know if this is the case?
Micki: they have everything thrown in there, including $41 million for sod on the National Mall.
$335,000,000 for STD prevention.
RealKim: it will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be Obama’s fault.
Ever.
Thing is, the House Leadership told the repub minions to vote against the stimulus plan.
When The Great One met with them yesterday, no minds were changed.
Why all the concessions.

The real pork is for all the tax cuts Republican wanted– which you know, Obama had to agree to because after all, the Republicans control the government now. But not to worry, as the last eight years have shown, and Obama has stated himself, Republicans have all the best ideas! And tax cuts work, they really really do, can’t you tell? So it’s all good, no worries!
the only way to hold him accountable is to make him accountable. That is what got me about these two letters. They let him off the hook!

how about “WE DEMAND…”
Murphy will put that into a prowl. those women’s groups are useless. they are working with the other side, I swear.
But they never have taggles! That’s what we’ve all been screaming about–why would they do it now? They are falling for the “he’s all we’ve got” ruse that he knew would work on the majority of women (and gays). Well, we CAN’T vote Republican, so we HAVE to support this guy and be grateful for the crumbs he throws us.

Micki: because “this is the way they’ve always done it.” So much for change and transparency. They are too protective of their political careers to fight for something on principle up front–like Hillary did with health care. As she said, it was “like walking into a buzz saw.” So, they try to sneak things in when no one is looking, and vote on it at 3 a.m.

Discussion of the project and some findings (like Larry Summers’ influence on the bill: He believes highway funding gets into the economy faster, so he wanted more for highways, less for mass transit. Go figure) are on audio from The Brian Lehrer Show on Tuesday (first segment).

Taggles – if you’re still here, I just posted it.
I believe much of the blame for the fiasco regarding the funding of contraception/family planning lies with how the Democrats introduced and defended the “stimulus” plan. In reality, the so called “stimulus” plan is intended to provide relief and additional funding to the states for those programs they expect to get hit by the recession (and the bill’s actual name is more descriptive of the relief aspects).
By continually harping on the “stimulus” portion and failing to quickly identify family planning as part of the relief portion, they did themselves and women a disservice. Pelosi did a particularly bad job explaining the inclusion of contraceptives as stimulus, and ended up being compared to Chairman Mao by Jack Cafferty on CNN. Once the Democrats let the argument get out of control they set themselves up to be a laughing stock (the jokes came quickly, one after another).
Personally, although I support family planning, I don’t think it was wise to include the provision in the stimulus package. Due to the serious nature of the recession, it may have been better if the stimulus package hadn’t been filled with so many projects from the Democratic wish list … projects which may be worthwhile, but which don’t readily appear to have much to do with stimulating the economy.
Quite frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. I fought for BC rights when I needed them. Only to be slapped up-side the head by the ever so much smarter, and younger “women” who took them for granted.
Now it is their turn to fight. Before they can, though, they will need to stop mainlining the kool-ade. And we should also give them some time to recover from the hangovers they’ll have.
I read elsewhere that “the stimulus” plan includes 4 billion for ACORN and also that most of this $$ will be spent not now, but in time for the midterm elections. When Nixon did this (preparing to stay in office forever), they called it CREEP (Committee to Reelect the President).
