Escape Inauguration Mania With Activism: Just Say No to Caroline!

Caroline Kennedy

Caroline Kennedy

Governor Paterson of New York has just a few more days to decide who will be appointed to Hillary Clinton’s Senate seat. Reports are flying through the New York press – some say the Governor is dead set on appointing Caroline, whereas others say he is giving other candidates a second look, including the redoubtable and incredibly worthy Representative Carolyn Maloney.

We still have a chance to make a difference. Call, write, email or fax the Governor’s office, and disseminate the open letter below as far and wide as possible.

Governor Paterson’s Contact Information:

To Write To The Governor:
David A. Paterson
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224

An Open Letter to Governor David Paterson:

Dear Governor Paterson,

The person whom you appoint to Senator Clinton’s seat should have two qualities:

1) She should be a woman; and

2) Like Hillary, she should be ready and qualified on Day One.

Satisfying the first requirement should be quite simple. However, it is the need to satisfy both requirements that seems to be escaping your attention.

To a certain extent, we need gender affirmative action in government. As a group that makes up 51% of the country’s population, women are severely under-represented in Congress, at an abysmal 17%. When Senator Clinton becomes Secretary of State, that already inadequate percentage will dip to 16%.

But in the case of the next New York Senator, there is no need to appoint a person who has literally no Congressional experience whatsoever; a person who has apathetically declined to vote in several New York primaries; a person who, with her fawning, disingenuous attempts to pretend Barack Obama was “a President like her father,” was instrumental in making sure that the highest, hardest glass ceiling was not shattered for women this year.

Yet that is what you may end up doing with Caroline Kennedy. And according to the Post story today, it is for no other reason than the Kennedy-Bloomberg money and connections she is promising you.

May I ask how this is ANY different than what Rod Blagojevich was arrested for doing? If you are unconcerned with the fate of your state, and only looking out for your own political future, then I say you are simply selling the Senate seat that Hillary Clinton worked so hard to earn, to the people with the deepest pockets and the most political influence. For shame, Governor Paterson!

Two outstanding Congresswomen, Carolyn Maloney and Kirsten Gillibrand, are more than ready and qualified on Day One. Should one of them be appointed, Ms. Kennedy could easily step into one of their seats and EARN her stripes as a New York Congresswoman before running for the Senate seat in 2010. Interestingly, Carolyn Maloney’s district is the same as Ms. Kennedy’s. It would be a seamless transition for both women, should you choose this path.

Honor the New Yorkers at whose pleasure you serve. Do not choose Caroline Kennedy as the next Senator from New York. Below are just a few of the many blog posts and articles stating that Caroline Kennedy would not be a good choice.

  1. To this great post I will add:

No woman who stabs another woman in the back deserves to get that woman’s job. Period.

    Magda
One woman who supports women who support women

  2. I filled out the petition and it would not accept me as I had already signed.
I guess the petition should be from Chicago then I could have signed many many times.

  3. I vote for Maloney.

  4. Carolyn Maloney!!!

  5. Can I add one more line?:
“Governor Paterson, don’t make me come up there ;-( “

  6. Maloney!

Thanks for the contructive distraction, madamab.

Years ago when I worked for NJT is was coming home on the train and one of Reagan”s advisers made the mistake of sitting next to me. I think he prayed for the train to get to Philadelphia asap.
I told him I would write in Miss Piggy before I would vote for that man.
When I saw Miss Piggy as a choice I had to laugh.

HelenK – we are separated at birth, just a few years apart.

  9. A Democrat inserted into the US Senate without a record of public service is/was obscene. Sorry princess, you have’nt paid your dues.

  10. well all am “totally knackered” so am turning in early!

    see you in the morning.

Oh and If Kiki comes into night I tried to meet her daughter this weekend and she wasnt at work I am going down in two weeks and will give it another try….

Madama I was wondering could we have our own awards ceremony-

Call it the Big “O” awards and give a Big O toy to the winners of each catagory?

    suggested catagories-

blogg that loves and propagates the most obama porn

blogger that is most addicted to Obamaporn

    best koolaid drinking (blogg)

    best server of koolaid (blogger)….

gosh the list could go on and on

Oh gosh the wominz just got ther first and only bone….

Obama to resind (sic?)executive order that prevents federal dollars from going to support international family planning organizations that also consul , refer or preferm pregancy terminations….

I guess he really wants you all to love him!

  11. Judging by everything I have thus read on Carolyn Maloney, I believe she would be an extremely effective Senator. One that New York could be proud of.

What pray tell does Caroline Kennedy bring to the table besides her name and endorsement of O’Blah Blah?

I was under the impression that the O’Bots had an aversion to political dynasties?

  12. Obots have an aversion to dictionaries.

  13. I just finished rewatching Chelsea’s tribute to her mom. I loved the Hillary speech when she said this was for all the people who stumbled and got back up. It’s exactly what I am intending to do. Barack Obama won the battle. He cheated and he lied his was into the White House. He will not win the war though. I intend to do my best to ensure he gets his place in history(just like W) as the lie and cheat that he is.

I wouldn’t love him if he offered me a six figure salary to do so. A cheat is a cheat is a cheat.

  14. DC weather..Tomorrow: On and off snow flurries are possible along with variably cloudy skies. High 31F. Winds NNW at 10 to 20 mph.
Tomorrow night: Snow flurries early will give way to partly cloudy skies during the overnight hours. Low 19F. Winds NW at 10 to 20 mph.

  15. Sadly, I remember January 1992. I took the day off to watch Clinton sworn in at a party held at a neighbor’s home. We were elated although admittedly some of that euphoria had worn off a little by 1996.

I never bothered to watch either of Bush 1 or 2 swearing in’s as I never considered him viable or watchable for that matter.

The same applies for tomorrow. This “win” was gained by subtrafuge beginning with the caucuses and gaining momentum as the months wore on. Had Hillary lost sometime earlier in the campaign perhaps, and this is just conjecture, I may have felt differently. But since May 31st actually took place and we had front row seats to this injustice, nothing would make me turn on the tv to witness this event.

To find myself scuttled to the back of the bus, to be told I did not matter, to find my vote did not count, to be called names because I refused to get onboard, to watch the media tying themselves up in knots for validation, to be devoid of criticism, and to laud this achievement is simply unmanageable.

Better to pretend the world out there is not happening for a few days is an act of my own volition.

I’ve already been told I will not be missed.

  16. If you look up contortion in the dictionary it’ll say a function performed by Obamites Red Dragon.

  17. All that goes through my head when I read that is, it’s probably another way for him to launder money for the next election cycle fuzzy.

  18. I am in moderation with ABG. Help!

  19. Pssst Pat , see if he will take some Litium for that bipolar thing he’s got going on.

  20. What are her qualifications again?

    1) A Kennedy
    2) A Kennedy
    3) Early supporter of Obama

Ahhhh– There you go, gavel drop, we have our candidate…

  21. Why do we think for one minute they care how the voters think or what they want? This is all about them, not us. The NY polls are suggesting there is little interest in having Caroline replace Hillary yet the governor more than likely will be listening to another tune.

Should it bother us? Yes. Will that make a difference? No.

  22. RedDragon,

Only fake dynasties. They hate the Clintons, who are noit a dynasty! They love anything Kannedy as long as Master Obot endorses it.

  23. I vote for Kirsten Gillibrand. Powerhouse lawyer and legislator. Never missed voting in an election either.

    Go, Gillibrand !

  24. For those not inclined to worship at the altar of a liar and cheat.

  26. Email sent. I told him to please appoint Maloney.

  27. if you want some funny youtube “bear educational” videos to watch instead of the coronation tomorrow:

okay spammy heres the link: put me in modration:

its called “Britians Next Bear Model”-spoof on americas next top model….

Ladies the accents are killers but the plumbers buttcracks I could do without….

Johnathan Robinson is a web friend of mine some of his stuff is pretty racy but not the link I posted here…

there are I believe 8 episodes and there are tonns of spoofs on american television shows…

So if the big “o” doesnt turn you on….

  28. “Always aim high, work hard and care deeply about what you believe in. And, when you stumble, keep faith. And, when you’re knocked down, get right back up and never listen to anyone who says you can’t or shouldn’t go on.” – Hillary Clinton

I am taking these words to heart.

I intend to go on in spite of a President Obama, just as I went on in spite of a President Bush. I intend to stand strong in my conviction that ALL people have value(not just people of a particular gender, color, tax bracket, or political ideation).

  29. I’m a big Gillibrand fan. She is my District Rep, and if given a higher profile, she will be a powerful Senator and leader for women one day. She is independent, principled, strong and smart. Of course, Maloney would be great too. I sent the letter off to Paterson with a few of my own edits. After reports leaked that it was a “done deal” today, I heard him on the radio saying he “swore he has not made his decision yet, and he still has to review some of the applicant’s records.” That sounded phony to me–what they heck has he been waiting for?! He’s had quite a while to do his homework, and he has to appoint someone soon. He hasn’t researched the applicants yet? I call b.s. on that one.

  30. Yeah, Maloney. Of course. But I doubt he’ll do it.

WTF is with Biden and his wife insulting Hillary on Oprah?

    http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-biden20-2009jan20,0,4296729.story

  31. I don’t think Hillary’s resigned yet so he’s holding his tongue.

  32. I emailed Paterson that I know he is between a rock and a hard place (I did not state that that would be between Barack & Michele) but that I hoped he would be courageous and have the integrity to name one of those who has actually worked for the government, and voted, for many years. Of course, I am sure that he will name CK but equally sure that that will seal his re-election efforts to be unsuccessful. She will win with money for a re-election, just like BO did.
I heard someone on PBS this evening say that BO is now “President of the World.” I await to see what happens. Going into hibernation for the next 24 hours.

  33. CW: not to be negative, because I appreciate your inspiring comments, but I just read this, and it frightens me. He is going to take the intimidating, bullying, harassing network that gamed the caucuses and abused others for months, and he is going to strengthen and expand it to coerce Congressmen/women to vote according to his own agenda…and OF COURSE, to ensure his reelection. Someone has got to break down this political monolith he is creating. Combined with the complicity of the media, it will be like a dictatorship for 8 years.

Retooling Obama’s campaign machine for the long haul

Reporting from Washington — As Barack Obama builds his administration and prepares to take office next week, his political team is quietly planning for a nationwide hiring binge that would marshal an army of full-time organizers to press the new president’s agenda and lay the foundation for his reelection.

People familiar with the plan say Obama’s team would use the network in part to pressure lawmakers — particularly wavering Democrats — to help him pass complex legislation on the economy, healthcare and energy.

Already, Democratic Party officials on the state level worry that it could become a competing political force that revolves around the president’s ambitions while diminishing the needs of down-ballot Democrats.

A centralized system run from the DNC would mark a break from the Democratic tradition of relying more on muscular state and local party organizations. It would more closely mirror the Republican structure created under President Bush, whose political guru Karl Rove engineered the 2004 reelection campaign from his post at the White House using a central GOP database.

One key difference, however, is that the Republicans used their network to target Democrats and win elections, whereas the Obama system will be used at least in part to influence members of the president’s own party.

This aide said the pressure could actually help Democrats in those districts. They could either point to a groundswell of support for the Obama policy as a reason to vote for it — or, alternatively, they could choose to score points with conservatives by bucking the activists.

  34. I heard someone on PBS this evening say that BO is now “President of the World.”

WHAT is wrong with these people?! Why don’t they ask the Taliban how they feel about that statement?

  35. The Taliban hate HC, so they probably just love Lord Bama.

  36. I don’t see him being able to expand caucuses without the support of states. That isn’t saying that he won’t use money to try and game the system.

I’m with riverdaughter. I don’t think Obama( or his handlers) are that competent. If he targets his own party the GOP are going to be filled with glee as he does their work for them. A smart person would have asked Clinton whether she wanted VP or SoS. Since he didn’t he’s got millions of fissures already. He’ll be lucky to last 4 years intact.

  37. Hi Fuzzy! (if you’re still here)……..sorry you and Mell missed each other, but I appreciate you trying!

  38. I emailed, but Madamab, but who knows if he’ll listen to a guy from out of state. Let’s hope so.

And off topic, but HBO IS SHOWING THAT FRIGGIN’ LINCOLN MEMORIAL CRAP AGAIN!!! 😡

I’m switching to Showtime so I can watch Dexter and Weeds.

  39. I don’t think he’s going to pressure them so much publicly. It will be done the same way it was done to extort superdelegate votes, endorsements, and the rigged Convention vote. They will threaten Dem reps careers, funding, and isolate them if they do not “cooperate.” He is taking the Thug Operation to a whole new level.

“a nationwide hiring binge that would marshal an army of full-time organizers to press the new president’s agenda and lay the foundation for his reelection.”

People need jobs. (And I’m sure he’ll pad the “new jobs” numbers with these hirings.) I wonder if this money will be raised privately–or is it DNC money? That’s why he installed loyalist Tim Kaine as Chair, and his battleground state organizer is the new DNC Executive Director.

  40. Thanks for writing this “madamb”.
    It’s PURE GENUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. re: Obie’s thugs. Oh shit, here comes ACORN.

  42. I go back in 2 weeks kiki will see her then if she is working saturday night….

the staff is very nice there but the girl on duty did not know mels sched…

you were planning a trip in february right tell me the week and I will try to be there I have another softball tourney in feb in tampa…

  43. Fredster: someone at NOQ linked to a site that claims ACORN is getting a lot of money in the bail out plan.

  44. Let’s keep expanding PUMA P.A.C. and PumaProwls. Murphy’s doing a fine job; she has so much energy.

I suspect the army of Obots won’t get paid that well and the youngsters will get tired of any grunt work necessary for long-term projects..

  45. Acorn & $$$. Yeah, I remember seeing a link about that getting cleverly (diabolically) worked into one of the rescue bills. Follow the money; just look for the scum.

  46. Isn’t it atrocious that the press is not reporting these connections and patterns? Such a disservice to our democracy.

  47. Let’s batten the hatches, kids, tomorrow’s going to be an unbearable day.

I’m headed out to the dorm and then probably to bed. Tomorrow is the first day of class. *fingers crossed* Do not talk about BoBo, do not talk about BoBo.

  48. Puma and fif: I thought they had struck that out earlier when it came out that ACORN was gonna get $$$s.

You can bet since Obie’s in that the gravy train will be flowing for them now!

  49. I wrote the following letter:

    “Dear Governor Paterson,

The news flying fast and furious lately is that Caroline Kennedy is all but certain to be appointed as the replacement for Hillary Clinton’s soon-to-be vacant Senate seat. I very much hope that these stories are not true. Mrs. Kennedy has nothing to recommend her but her name. She has spent her entire adult life hiding from the public and the press, not practicing law (making her law degree rather worthless), and taking credit for a lot of charitable work others do (I assume you read The Village Voice.) While I hope that Senator Clinton’s replacement is indeed a woman, appointing any woman is rather insulting. Mrs. Kennedy has never earned or won a single vote from any New Yorker and if she ran today – she would lose. You know this. A legacy appointment of an unqualified and undeserving person like her is a slap in the face of New Yorkers who have bothered to leave the house on election days to vote for people like Carolyn Maloney.

If you appoint Caroline Kennedy to the Senate seat I know what I will do in two years: I will vote for whatever Republican runs against her, and for whatever Republican runs against you.

    Regards.

  50. Yea, during the election, they couldn’t afford the bad PR. Now, just push it through as fast as possible so no one has a time to actually look at the fine print. It’s all an EMERGENCY!!

  51. DYB: good letter. I will actively work against Paterson if he does this. It is his first real test of leadership and responsibility. Is he listening to the voters of his state (who overwhelming reject CK’s appointment), or is he only concerned with his re-election? If he does choose her, it will be very clear how self-serving he is.

  52. I’m headed out to the dorm and then probably to bed. Tomorrow is the first day of class. *fingers crossed* Do not talk about BoBo, do not talk about BoBo.

🙂 Night Reg. It all doesn’t exist for me. I am blissfully unaware of the whole spectacle. Tomorrow, I will be media free at work, and news blackout at home.

  53. DYB – are you interested in a PUMA Party next weekend? Email me at madamab at gmail dot com if so.

    🙂

  54. Wow, Caroline has 44 votes in the poll now. The Confluence must be getting spammed left and right for that to happen.

    Go anyone but CK!

  55. “DYB”
    Great letter!
Not only would I vote for the Republican; at this time would be Peter King. Since he is MY Congressman I know he is a fine man & an “Independent thinker” at that. He stood against his party & refused to impeach Pres. Clinton. Recently, stood up for Sen Clinton on the experience question. Since he worked closely with Pres Clinton on Ireland; he publicly VOUCHED for her work .
Paterson can also “Kiss my Vote good-bye in 2010”.

  56. tpt/ny: Yes, I remember King coming to Hillary’s defense on the issue of Ireland and her involvement in the peace process. Does he intend to run for Senate or Governorship?

  57. Gov. Patterson to release name of new Senator this weekend so more than likely it will not get talked about as much when it is confirmed on the weekend.

  58. “DYB”
Senator….”if” Caroline is the chosen one.
Not sure how he would handle Maloney since they work together in the House??

  59. Ralph B

Caroline is not an option. Carolyn is Carolyn Mahoney, who has worked incredibly hard for NY. Choosing her wouldn’t be spam.

  60. I’m for Caroline Kennedy. I don’t want another career politician with the usual resume. I like the fact that she is older, has spent her life in public service and now wants the power and the spotlight. One of my favorite senators is Olympia Snowe, who first ran for elected office when her husband died, I think for the same seat. There is a history of Senators and members of the House that end up where they are because of motivating circumstances in their lives. I believe Caroline Kennedy really wants this seat, so whatever she has going in her favor, more power to her.

  61. After conferring with madamab and others about this issue, I have added the perspective of 51 Percent to the matter. If you are interested please go to http://www.fifty-one-percent.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=34&Itemid=74

  62. I would like Rep. Nydia Velazquez from Brooklyn.

  63. What DNC money? Last I heard they were in the hole.

  64. DNC 15 million in the hole when Kaine took over. Obama had 30 million at end of campaign which he could potentially give to them or use for his own reelection.
