Last week I wrote an article about the future of civilization, collapse centered around a graph from “Limits To Growth.” I spent a fair bit of time staring at this graph yesterday, and I want to return to it, because it says some very important things about what’s coming up over the next decades. The first thing to understand is that the future is, as Willia […]

  1. After viewing the “voting” on Weblog it is even more difficult to believe that Andrew Sullivan has such a huge lead. I mean, Andrew Sullivan of all people!!

He is still awaiting the results of the paternity for Trig Palin. But oh wait, he did love him some Obama. Must be it.

  2. Just re-posting this from the previous thread:

Ironically I never even knew who Wonkette was till two days ago when they did Confluence in. Somebody got a screen shot of how they were going to cheat using a particular site to go in and vote. I guess somebody reported it, but apparently it still works. This is so infantile, I’m laughing my ass off here.

Thanks Red Dragon, for the copy of this message.

    From Wonkette:

Another “major” nominated PUMA blog this year in the category of “Best New Blog” is one called “Uppity Woman” (jesus christ) and it cannot be allowed to win. So we arbitrarily endorse another one called “~ synthesis ~” because it has a fun-lookin’ name. Vote “~ synthesis ~”, the best new blog in America.

Now here’s the message that’s on Synthesis’ site. The poor guy probably doesn’t even know what hit him.

    Posted by: shafeen | Jan 06, 2009 at 17:48

You, by default of Wonkette chance, are the best new blog in America. Check the link. Congratulations.

Posted by: miserable denizen | Jan 06, 2009 at 15:52

  3. I never thought this award was such a big deal until the folks at Wonkette decided it was so important that they’d have to cheat so they could see other blogs they’ve never even heard about until now lose.

I’m trying to find out how to contact the people who run this contest but stuff like this has got to stop.

  4. How do you guys like the photoshop of the Saddam statue. SOD did it.

  5. DV,

We’ve already contacted them and so have lots of other people.

  6. It probably should have been noted earlier, and maybe I missed it, but the site monitors today deserve a round of applause for their efforts in keeping the tr0lls from invading too often.

    Must have been a chore.

  7. Here, here Pat. Cheers.

  8. Disenfranchised- As someone said earlier, it’s hard to believe the Confluence and Wonkette are supposedly of the same political ideology.

I think Wonkette makes the word liberal look worse than any Republican ever has. It kind of makes you throw up in your mouth to think some unsuspecting person would go there and read “bitter old hag” and see them making fun of some woman’s weight and then see these folks say they voted for Obama because he was “cute” or the blog “synthesis” because the name was cool and think “This is what being a liberal is about? Sign me up for the conservative side of the aisle.”

  9. Incoming!

  10. What with the Wonkette mascot, logo it looks like a demented Bratz Doll trying to appear intelligent by wearing Tina Fey glasses.

  11. Boots- yeah that’s why the site had a whole post dedicated to how to cheat.

    Go to bed.

  12. myiq, thanks for cleaning up “boots”. “This site is full of sad”? You can’t have a reasoned, intellectual discussion with these folks.

  13. afrocity, Their mascot should be Favreau groping a random breast. This is how their followers “think”.

  14. Reasoned and intellectual would require two people with adult intellect conversing. Calling people names isn’t discourse, it’s what toddlers do.

  15. The worst part about moderating during troll invasions is that I can’t surf the blogs the way I usually do cuz I have to stay by the door.

  16. we appreciate you myiq

  17. Disenfranchised- That’s exactly who the posters at that site remind me of.

  18. Appreciate me too? I just banned a bunch of them.

  19. OTOH – kicking trolls in the junk is a rewarding experience.

  20. Of coursebb,

You know you’re the bomb baby!

  21. They’ve got Uppity Woman mad now. I don’t know if I’d want ot rile her up.

  22. Just kidding, CWaltz.

  23. I love SOD’s work. I think it’s brilliant!

  24. Does anyone have any statue toppling music to recommend?

  25. When I was at Wonkette earlier I read posts. There was no sign of brain activity..perhaps the air truck got delayed at customs.

  26. Another One Bites the Dust by Queen

  27. The offerings by all the Front Pagers since the beginning have been brilliant. Insightful, deliberative, educational, thought provoking, researched, factual, and entertaining. How we could ever be coupled with that piece of trash over there is mystifying.

That said, I am off to bed.

  28. That last “erudite” one didn’t even know plural endings. I sure am glad I full in the uneducated category if that is an example of educated.

  29. Afrocity:

It’s just a step above “Pee pee poo poo!”

  30. Their families must be so proud!

  31. Afro

Were they as boring as yesterday? I swear based on the post I read they seemed to believe they were going to fix the economy by cheering.

  32. Awwww cmon

neener is a cool kid word.

  33. Delurking …. SOD, that picture is hilarious! Thanks for my midnight guffaw.
Myiq and BB and all the other moderators, even though I only lurk (and have done since day 1) I really appreciate all your fine efforts in keeping the bathrooms clean so the rest of us can use the facilities in peace. Thank you all.

  34. dear bostonboomer:
    hilarious picture.
    wonkette = amoral scum

  35. Music update has been added.

  36. Time for bed for me guys. Have a good night.

  37. Night Pat!

  38. Night, CWaltz!

  39. I hope scrubs shows up.

  40. Pat is right. Looks like we made their entire day. They posted that emoticon that Fredster did which is hilarious and is like egg on their face. I love it. One of their posters refers to readers as “wonketeers”

Posting there would be like casting pearls before swine. Woink Woink.

  41. Moo-cho grassy-ass to all of the mods who are cleaning the place up. We luvs you!!

  42. Oh afro, I stole that little tidbit from myiq! 😉

  43. We love you too, Fredster and Afrocity!

  44. Afrocity,

They call themselves wonketeers? That’s worse than wonktards. These are the people who voted for Obama. Now why on earth wouldn’t we want to be like them?

  45. I now now the true meaning of “No Child Left Behind,” they have all been dropped off at Wankergarten.

  46. Wanktards in Wankergarten?

  47. Can you believe Taylor Marsh only has 83 votes for “best liberal blog?”

  48. I now now the true meaning of “No Child Left Behind,” they have all been dropped off at Wankergarten.

  49. BB, with only 83 votes, not even all her personalities are voting for her.

  50. BB@1:11: Oh that couldn’t have happened to a more deserving (heh) person. 🙄

  51. It’s no wonder they have issues.

Wonkette is a blog with a feminine name and mascot, and it’s full of faux-he men that post immature misogynistic crap they call “humor.”

Those morons are as conflicted as a bunch of homophobic Republicans tap dancing in the men’s room.

  52. I wonder if she has any more readers than that. Remember when her posts used to get 500 comments?

  53. Good night guys. Give em hell

  54. Too bad Freud is dead. He could have a field day over there.

  55. Night Afrocity. Post your mac and cheese recipe sometime.

  56. Night Afrocity.

  57. Freud wouldn’t have been interested in the Wonketeers. He only worked with live subjects.

  58. G’night Afrocity!

  59. He was interested in people who got stuck in certain childhood stages. Oedipal complex, anal retentive or anal expulsive personalities, oral fixations….

  60. Mac and Cheese w/ Prosciutto

8 ounces small elbow macaroni (2 cups)

1 1/2 cups (packed) grated Gruyère cheese (about 6 ounces)
    1 cup whipping cream
    1 cup whole milk
3 ounces thinly sliced prosciutto, coarsely chopped
    3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
    1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Position rack in bottom third of oven; preheat to 400°F. Butter 11×7-inch glass baking dish. Cook macaroni in large pot of boiling salted water until tender but still firm to bite. Drain well.

Whisk 1/2 cup Gruyère, cream, milk, prosciutto, Parmesan and nutmeg in large bowl to blend. Add macaroni and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Sprinkle remaining 1 cup Gruyère over. Bake until cheese melts and macaroni and cheese sets, about 20 minutes. Serve warm.

  61. Oh thanks! I love Gruyere cheese too.

  62. That looks fantastic, Afrocity!

  63. “Oedipal complex, anal retentive or anal expulsive personalities, oral fixations”

That’s what it says under “About Us” at Wankette

  64. Is that so. How very self aware of them.

  65. Oh Lordy Afrocity, I’m getting munchies just reading the recipe!!!

  66. Oh one more thing and then I will go to bed.

You can substitute any cheese but I love Gruyere. I also saute breadcrumbs in butter and sprinkle generously on top of the macaroni and cheese and bake. It adds texture and pairs nicely with the creaminess of the dish. This dish is so easy and fast, tastes like you labored for hours.

  67. That last one thinks Wonkette is still a “she.”

  68. Afrocity, the nutmeg had me curious.

  69. I’d make it tomorrow, but we’re having an ice storm.

  70. BB, you may be lucky to have power!!

  71. MyIq, what you just sent to the spammy processor, is that representative of what you’ve been dealing with today?

  72. I closed comments on RD’s thread.

Make ’em come up here if they wanna play.

  73. That was mild

  74. Well, it’s finally calmed down. Maybe now I can catch up on my reading.

  77. I’ll try to come up with something to stimulate discussion in the morning.

    – ReplyWoah, anybody seen their latest post yet?

What the hell does this even mean in any way, shape or form? A Wonkette tyranny of… having an opinion? Existing? Have we somehow been overthrown? Liberated from a dictator? ???

New topic of discussion – which group rates most insane: Paultards, PUMA’s, Freepers, or 9-11 inside job conspiracy nuts?

  79. I’m sure you’ll find something creative. Good luck.

  80. What’s really funny is that those cretins thought they could ruin my reputation.

  81. Who did?

  82. Just checking in before I check out. We have three computers networked at home at the moment, so guess what I did a few minutes ago? Starts with weblogsawards and ends with voting. Inquiring minds would sure like to know just how the wankerettes are messing so badly with the poll in question – ? Sure hope the bums get disqualified.

Okay, double double, toil and trouble…. Nite all.

  83. Night Kat5. Thanks for voting.

  84. sheesh, it’s getting pretty bad when reality and the virtual world are a disaster … maybe I’m going to have to go to second life and buy a server to myself

  85. Dakinikat,

What do you mean? What happened in the virtual world?

  86. Who did?

    The asshats at Blogstalkers

It’s not the first time. Everytime they try the reaction is a big yawn.

    They really don’t get it.

  87. BB: I sent out some emails asking friends to help in the voting and that they could vote every 24 hrs. I gave them myiq’s site since he’s going to keep that on top with ezee links.

    Hope it helps.

  88. Fredster,

That’s really nice of you. Thanks. Whoever kidnapped Josh Marshall is gaining on us.

  89. myiq,

Who even reads their site? They could only ruin your reputation with their miniscule fan base.

  90. Whoever kidnapped Josh Marshall is gaining on us.

    Oh shit!

Oh myiq: Motel Hell is on AMC right now. Care for a nice sausage or ham sammich?

  91. It might be me, but does the art of blogging mean typing the first inane thing that flickers upon a synapsis which could just as well be replaced with, “Hey, look at me,” and calling it all good?

You could take their comments and their lack of organized thought and it would be proof positive that the prefrontal cortex is the last part of the brain to develop during adolescence.

I guess they have a valid defense.

  92. “Rape is a Good Thing”
    from wonkette:

Neilist says at 6:55 pm, January 6th, 2009
    – ReplyThis is really sick.

I watched the gabnet.com video re advertising and the sexual objectification of women, etc. I agreed with a lot of the points made, but then I read this little gem:

“This is what the victory of Barack Obama means for women: We are all fair game. It’s fine to advocate violence against Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, over and over and over. You can win a national election by doing that, no matter how unqualified and corrupt you are. It’s also fine for Obama’s chief speechwriter to feign date rape against Hillary Clinton and not only keep his privileged position in the Administration, but to write the inaugural speech.”

I immediately decided that rape is a Good Thing.

    For some people, that is.

(PUMAs: Word to the wise: Cows don’t get raped.

    Even if they ask politely.

    Moooooooo . . . . )
What a failure of human being. And you *know* he lives a very sheltered life, since that sort of talk out in the “real world” would get him clocked upside his head.

Or fired. Or arrested. Or divorced…etc.

Congrats, Neilist. You sound just like, well, like a Rapist! You are disgusting.

  93. It’s kind of funny. Ordinarily, the morons at wankfest would see themselves as far superior to the Buttburger idiots. But now they’re allies in hating us. I feel so complimented.

  94. Wow! That’s even more Freudian than I thought.

  95. I was over at uppity woman and charmed goat is there explaining how he lurks here and wasn’t a troll but got caught up in the crossfire today.

    Here’s something UW asked me:

Uppity Woman, on January 7th, 2009 at 2:12 AM Said:

Fredster, can you speak up for Goat? I don’t know RD that well and I don’t have her email.

BB, can you or myiq let the other mods know?

  96. You could take their comments and their lack of organized thought and it would be proof positive that the prefrontal cortex is the last part of the brain to develop during adolescence.

I guess they have a valid defense.

If I were really snarky I’d blame their issues on fetal alcohol syndrome by their mothers and add some pictures:

  97. In the real world, cows get raped. So do goats. And other farm animals.

  98. Fredster,

That’s not fair to the people who are really suffering from FAS which is terrible.

  99. I’ve never heard of a woman raping a farm animal. I suppose it could happen.

  100. bb: i’ve been spending too much time in the spam filter and alternate websites today … i need reprogramming to something innocuous … maybe I could go to a few grateful dead concerts

  101. I know, I know BB. I said if I were snarky.

But they certainly have had no such qualms about us…

  102. Dakinikat,

It’s better not to look at that toxic stuff. It’s meaningless and has nothing to do with us. Have you heard anything interesting in the economic world? I’d still like to know what your favorite game is.

  103. Profanity and crude humor don’t faze me, but ButtBurger and Wankette are just profane and crude.

  104. You probably read this in the FT:

Writing for the Financial Times, Buiter, now a Professor with the London School of Economics European Institute, comments: “There will, before long (my best guess is between two and five years from now) be a global dumping of US dollar assets, including US government assets. Old habits die hard. The US dollar and US Treasury bills and bonds are still viewed as a safe haven by many. But learning takes place.”

Buiter, who has previously advised the World Bank, the IMF and the European Commission, points out that the dollar has managed to stay afloat due to the misguided notion that the US can make more capital on overseas investments and interests than foreign investors can make on US assets – a hypothesis that economists have referred to as “American alpha”.

However, he believes the global financial crisis has exposed the fatal flaws in that assumption.

“The past eight years of imperial overstretch, hubris and domestic and international abuse of power on the part of the Bush administration has left the US materially weakened financially, economically, politically and morally,” Prof Buiter writes. “Even the most hard-nosed, Guantanamo Bay-indifferent potential foreign investor in the US must recognise that its financial system has collapsed.”

Buiter warns that a Keynesian-style increase in public spending, the economic stimulus plan mooted by President elect Obama, will not work in the long term because underlying the fundamentals of the US economy is what he describes as a “deep structural rot”.

  105. I thought you were talking about me there for a minute.

  106. The total value of the bailouts undertaken by the federal government in 2008 now exceeds the combined cost of every major war the United States has ever engaged in, according to a comparison of war costs calculated by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) and the value of the bailouts as calculated by Bloomberg News or Bianco Research.

  107. BB: Did you see Obie’s comments that the deficits could be in the trillions for some years to come?

The whole thing is gonna fall in like a house of cards.

  108. bb: Civilization is my fav game and a close second is Caesar.

and i’m reading some journal articles that were recently published on how costly and ineffective the US medical system has become. Was going to try to use that for my next post, but hate to throw it out there when i’d have to moderate it every 2 seconds for vacuuous Tr0ll bombs

  109. Is that a computer game? Or do you have to have some other platform?

I’ll be around all day tomorrow to moderate.

  110. bb: Catherine the Great had a thing for horses, she even had some interesting devices made for that purpose.

  111. No, Fredster, I didn’t see that. I can’t take listening to him.

  112. bb: computer

  113. Yeah, I was thinking about that. I don’t know if the horses were willing or not.

  114. One thing I’ve been wondering about and haven’t seen anything written is the fact that the wars have been fought “off the books,” and whether or not the current estimate of the debt includes their cost.

  115. I want to get a couple of computer games. I’ve never tried them. I saw there is new game with zombies in it, but I don’t think it’s a computer game.

  116. That’s a good point, Prolix. Probably not. They have off the books spending for intelligence too. It’s almost enough to make me want to turn into one of those anti-income tax nuts.

  117. I have to get something that is compatible with Vista.

  118. BB: Here’s the text of one article:

Amid such criticism, the president-elect huddled with his economic team on Tuesday to discuss ways to contain the long-term deficit. Attendants included budget director-designate Peter Orszag, Treasury Secretary-nominee Timothy Geithner and National Economic Council director-designate Lawrence Summers.

“Potentially we’ve got trillion-dollar deficits for years to come, even with the economic recovery that we are working on at this point,” Mr. Obama said. “We’re going to have to stop talking about budget reform. We’re going to have to totally embrace it. It’s an absolute necessity.”

  119. Oh hell…I think I’m off to bed.

    Nite y’all !

  120. Wow, I just heard some heavy equipment go by. They must be getting ready for the ice storm.

  121. Night Fredster.

  122. Night Fredster! I won’t be up much longer either.

  123. i ‘m heading for belle reves, also … i have to get some research done tomorrow. I may have to go into campus and try to sweet talk the software library into downloading an econometrics pkg on my lap top. Evidently my old program doesn’t install on 64 byte computers yet. sigh.

    good night

  124. I’m gonna grab a couple hours of sleep.

You wanna close comments until I get back or should I just clean up the mess later?

  125. There’s nobody around. It’s OK with me to close the comments if you’re going to post something for morning. There isn’t any way to open the comments again though, is there?

  126. Good luck, Dakinikat. I have a 64 bit computer too. For a long time I couldn’t get on the wireless at my univ., but they have it upgraded now. I finished my dissertation draft and I’m gonna take tomorrow off.

  127. I’m going to close them. Get some rest, myiq.

  128. I admit I decided a long time ago that polls like this, indeed most things on the internet, are at the mercy of adolescent pinheads whose views and activities would shame any reasonably mature and sensible person. I could care less who wins them, and I read very few blogs and sites, which strike me as infantile to the point of needing nappies. When a site attracts my attention because of its wit, intelligence and conscientious stand with regard to issues that concern me, I read it. I read The Confluence. That makes you a winner, in my eyes anyway. Have confidence – you don’t need to win rigged popularity contests to prove you matter.

  129. No problemo, SOD. I hope your daughter is OK.

  130. Absolute calumny about Catherine the Great and horses.
All powerful women are slandered in mostly sexual terms.
    When will we ever learn?

  131. Damn. I’m really gonna have to show up for the midnight shift around here more often. Looks like the joint was jumpin’!

(I’m trying to make myself go to bed/get up early to work off some extra poundage though…grooooan….I’d soooo much rather hang out here and kick trolls in the junk ;))

  132. @BB

    Hope she doesn’t die.
