Wednesday: Obamalama-ding-dang

It looks like the media is settling in for some nice narratives.  Let’s take a look at what Obama and Mom-inChief have to look forward to in the next four years.

Ahhh, yes, well that didn’t take long.  Obama is reported to have ordered a $30,000 rhodium and diamond ring for Michelle.  Isn’t that sweet.

Rhodium? Who knew?!

Rhodium? Who knew?!

(Note to BFF- I don’t like the shape.  It’s too bulky for my long skinny finger.  It would look like I’m wearing an olive.  Alexander Sepkus is more my style.  I mean, if you are running out of Christmas ideas.  {{snorg!}})

Or is he ordering this ring?  There have been some conflicting reports.  His spokespeople say “no”, the designer says “yes”.  No matter.  It isn’t really the point. The point is that Obama and Michelle are made to look like noveau riche social climbers with bad taste.  {{GASP!}}  What will Sally Quinn say?  Will she be obligated to invite them to her soirees?  Will The Village have to pretend that Michelle’s favorite drink is suddenly chic?  What if she orders a Grasshopper or tries to mix one of the single malts with creme de menthe?  Horrors!

The American People will surely be offended by such display of excess, especially when they’ve just been told that some of the decisions foisted on Obama by the wretched economy will not be popular.  But surely, SURELY they knew, as David Sirota and Chris Bowers have recently discovered, that what progressives and the common voting public wanted was totally irrelevent and has been since May 31, 2008.  Or they *should* have known that.  If they’re just piping up now, it can only mean one thing: They’re closet racists.

So, outrage is what the Rupert Murdoch types are going for here.  I have to admit that this little bit of bedeviling distraction coming on the heels of the $600,000,000 that Obama spent on the campaign does allow me to indulge in a bit of schadenfreude.  But what makes me really mad is the fact that Bill Clinton has to divulge every donor to his library while Obama is revealing… what, exactly, about where all his excess millions came from?

Come to think of it, the ring story is probably true.  Unnecessarily large, tasteless and expensive.  The kind of thing a Married to the Mob type would wear.  It will look perfect on Michelle.

Update: Apparently you troll type people don’t get the point of this post.  The point was not that there was a ring in the works.  The point was that this is the kind of story we should expect to see during the Obama administration.  It’s designed to make you take your eye off the ball.  And regular Americans are going to start paying attention when cold hard economic reality starts to set in.  Plus, the media eats this $%@% up.  Both Obama’s are stupidly courting the media and walking on eggshells and this will result in them pulling back on some of the stuff that needs to get done just at the time when it is most needed.  They are trying to avoid criticism but they should have taken a lesson from Hillary.  The media is going to hammer you no matter what.  Might as well do the right thing in spite of the media.  Right now, The Villagers have Obama by the short hairs.  Step out of line even a little, start getting all nostalgic for alphabet agencies, help out labor and homeowners and you will see a lot more of these stories.

But instead of flinging poo about a story that was incorrect, (btw, we never said it was accurate.  We just mused about the possibilities) why don’t you get on Obama’s case for not disclosing who gave him all that campaign cash.  Because if he doesn’t, he looks like a frickin’ hypocrite for making Bill Clinton reveal all of his donors.  Fair is fair.

In other news:

  • Obama’s secret weapon to keep Hillary in check is supposed to be The Enforcer, General Jim Jones.  Mebbe.  Mebbe not.  I don’t have any doubt that Hillary will *not* be a Condi in this administration.  She will be visible and active- because she has to be.  But I would be very careful to not underestimate her.
  • Caro found this little gem at Political Wire.  Sort of knocks the wind out of “the Lightbringer is going to save us all” meme and it’s probably the truest thing W has said in years: “I’m sure some people voted for Barack Obama because of me.”
    — President Bush, in an interview with CNN.
  • Here’s another gem that Caro of Makethemaccountable.com has dug up: “Why Obama’s got Complete Confidence in Clinton” by John Nichols at The Nation.  I agree with Caro’s point that if there wasn’t a sliver of daylight between Obama and Clinton and if we’re all supposed to forget all about Change! ‘cos it’s Nah, Gah, Happen, then why the f^&* did we vote for the least experienced of the two to be the next president?  If Clinton was just as likely to act like Obama, then why not Clinton?  Ahh, grasshopper, but WAS she going to act just like Obama?  Hmmm…  I found an interesting thing the other day.  Do you know who this man is?  This man was Secretary of the Interior under FDR.  He was the guy responsible for administering the PWA and other alphabet agencies of The New Deal.  He also happens to have been the father of *this* man:    Funny how that works, inn’t?  It looks like the one thing the well connected fear more than anything else is a return to The New Deal era.  Well, I guess they won’t have to worry about that anymore, not with Obama in charge.  That $600,000,000 is looking like a pretty good investment to them, probably.  After all, it was a one time investment.  Not some icky tax that would only end up in the hands of the Forgotten Man.  (Sounds like Hillary’s “You’re not invisible to me” theme.  Damn, the wealthy dodged a bullet.  Whew!)

  1. Politico reported yesterday that when they finish counting, Obama’s haul will be closer to one billion dollars.

  2. Oh really? Then why am I still getting email from the Big Dawg asking for money to settle Hillary’s debts?

  3. “Obama’s haul will be closer to one billion dollars.”

Dare I hope that they would be any investigations? Will the republicans really sit on their hands over this?

As for the ring: Was it you, RD, that described during the campaign what sharing a dinner table with the insufferably pretentious Obamas would be like?

These guys are repellent. And yes–thoroughly tasteless.

  4. Do you think it’s possible that I could write a SINGLE post w/o a typo? Not at this hour–or any. (sigh)

  5. I hope that one on Michelle’s friends (after talking with Michelle) helped Obama pick out that ring. I would hate for Obama to spend $30,000 for a ring and have it sit in Michelle’s jewelry box. It kinda looks masculine to me, are we sure that the ring is for Michelle and not for Larry Sinclair??? Famous men have gotten in that kinda trouble before, you know!!!

  6. Michelle Obama: Americans Spending $600 Stimulus Checks on Earrings

    Amanda Carpenter notes:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, complained the government’s $600 economic stimulus check was only enough to buy “a pair of earrings” while stumping for her husband.

“You’re getting $600 – what can you do with that?” Mrs. Obama said in Pontiac, Michigan last week. “Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn’t pay down every bill every month. The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.”

She made these remarks at a “working women’s roundtable discussion.”

Well, it’s not like Michelle Obama makes comments like this all the time.

Not everyone can afford to keep it all together, especially here in Muskingum County, where, according to the census, the median household income in 2004 was $37,192, below both the Ohio and national average. Out of that, there’s the mortgage. And child care. Health care. Education. Lessons. “I know we’re spending — I added it up for the first time — we spend between the two kids, on extracurriculars outside the classroom, we’re spending about $10,000 a year on piano and dance and sports supplements and so on and so forth,” Mrs. Obama tells the women. “And summer programs. That’s the other huge cost. Barack is saying, ‘Whyyyyyy are we spending that?’ And I’m saying, ‘Do you know what summer camp costs?’”

One wonders whether that $600 budgeted for earrings could be spent on, say, fruit:

“Now we’re keeping, like, a bowl of fresh fruit in the house. But you have to go to the fruit stand a couple of times a week to keep that fruit fresh enough that a six-year-old—she’s not gonna eat the pruney grape, you know. At that point it’s, like, ‘Eww!’ She’s not gonna eat the brown banana or the shrivelledy-up things. It’s got to be fresh for them to want it. Who’s got time to go to the fruit stand? Who can afford it, first of all?”

Eh, nevermind the fruit. It’s probably not worth it, what with all the nefarious labeling of products:

“And the notion of trying to think about a lunch every day! . . . So you grab the Lunchables, right? And the fruit-juice-box thing, and we think—we think—that’s juice. And you start reading the labels and you realize there’s high-fructose corn syrup in everything we’re eating. Every jelly, every juice. Everything that’s in a bottle or a package is like poison in a way that most people don’t even know. . ”

What with the $600 earrings, the $10,000 summer camps, unaffordable fruit and hidden poisons on the store shelves, daily life in America seems particularly tough on women:

“I wake up every morning wondering how on earth I am going to pull off that next minor miracle to get through the day. I know that everybody in this room is going through this. That is the dilemma women face today. Every woman that I know, regardless of race, education, income, background, political affiliation, is struggling to keep her head above water.” (This presumably includes her friend Oprah.)

    (COUGHoprahCOUGH) So who’s to blame?

“What I notice about men, all men, is that their order is me, my family, God is in there somewhere, but me is first.”

  7. And I don’t think we’ll hear one peep of protest from the obots. His and Her Wonderfulness be on the cover of People with the $30,000 trinket and we’ll hear giddy titters of delight from O-land.

Insufferable indeed. I don’t know how I’ll get through the next four years.

  8. It seems to me that Obama has always been a reflector/changeling. Currently he is adopting the majority of Hillary’s policies and positiions which I by and large agree with.

My fundamental belief is that the Dems (who were tired of losing) and not effective when they finally won jumped ship to Obama when they saw he was on track to “out raise” Hillary.

This is a case of “follow the money”. If the money leads us to stable government and centrist policies I will be happy. It is a very good sign that Obama needs Hillary in his administration. I would rather have her as President….but that didn’t happen because her own party threw her over. I would rather have McCain as President…but his party was never 100% behind him.

I am a realist. I will work with the hand I’ve been dealt.

  9. The ring story is reportedly bogus…but,,,,one can still BELIEVE!!!! LOL!

Meanwhile…can you imagine having martinis with Michelle?? Seriously,,,you’ll have to sit down for this one…

Martinis with Michelle–A Times (UK) Writer Jumps the Shark as Palin Helps Block a Senate Super-Majority

  10. So the RNC spending 150k on Sarah Gump’s wardrobe is perfectly OK. She’s campaigning for vice-president afterall! But Obama buying his wife, the future first lady a nice piece of jewelry, how scandalous!

You ladies (and I’m incuding the men) need to get a grip. I’m sure 100 million dollars for “speaking fees” Billy never bought Hillary anything over $5 Wal-mart rings. Sheesh.

  11. Already I am sick to death of the media trying to recreate these two phonies into images that they absolutely are not. Comparing them to JFK and Jackie, fashion icons, the best parents evah!, superstars, messiahs, Lincoln, FDR. Give it a rest already!

They have yet to take up residence in DC and I am already fed up to the eyebrows with their faces plastered all over magazines and their every move being covered ad nauseum. Coins and plates are already for sale with these two grinning back at us from daily doses of commercial spots. I have yet to read one objective article that does not compare them to some previous honoree while the “gush” continues to emanate freely without criticism.

He has yet to plant his bony ass in the Oval Office and already we are subjected to daily assaults regarding his “greatness” with nothing whatsoever to back it up! What the hell has he done in his life so far to merit this type of adulation other than to run for office? Jesus, instead of taking a closer look as to where that reported 1 billion in donations originated, we find ourselves in breathless anticipation of what kind of goddamned dog they plan on buying the kids!

If this man had one thing in his background suggesting that he actually gave a damn about someone or something larger than himself, maybe. But up until now, we are being treated to more inane coverage of what he eats for breakfast and if he has actually given up smoking. Who gives a rat’s ass!

The press needs to climb off the Obama narrative and start talking facts that will affect all of us and stop creating these two nobodies into nobility. We should all be concerned at how and why he was able to accumulate 1 billion dollars in campaign funds and what that means in the long run.

Unless I am missing something here, this is not a good sign. Special interests and overseas contributions are asking for payment in return. What exactly?

  12. Dear Chief, I don’t recall Sarah or Billy camapigning on the “spread the wealth” platform. Or does “spread the wealth from me to my wife” count?

  13. Yo chief! I refer you to doublemint’s post above.
She and he are completely out of touch with the struggles the working poor face.
Fresh fruit? Forget it. Four for a dollar mac and cheese goes much further.
100% juice? You can get the juice “cocktail” for a couple dollars less.
PAY for summer activities? Get out the garden hose kids but don’t leave it on too long, water isn’t free.

They need to set an example, for goodness sake, at least pretend to freaking care how a $30,000. ring looks to people who don’t even make that in a year and still manage to get by, somehow.

  14. Pat,

Somehow, I can’t imagine Jackie Kennedy wearing that godawful thing!

  15. I’ve noticed this “chief” guy turning up all over lately. I wonder if Obama’s new fundraising drive is for more minimum wage astroturfers? Good luck with that, O.

  16. Hey chief, does your concern carry over to those constituents in his Chicago district who went without heat while he and Rezko went mansion shopping together? Or was that a fact that has no bearing on now as far as you are concerned?

Past acts preview future behavior and from my standpoint this guy could care less unless it has an overall effect on him. The ring and its cost display behavior that they just do not get it.

  17. I don’t think the DNC will want to check on anything but we can certainly pressure the FEC into doing an audit of O’s donations – they are auditing others’ they should be auditing ALL.

  18. The only “change” I see coming from his empty platitudes is that “business as usual” in Washington has just raised the entry fee into the stratosphere. Good luck going forward for anyone wishing to serve if 1 billion dollars has now become the new plateau.

    Change my ass!

  19. What do you mean that “Obama and Michelle are made to look like noveau riche social climbers with bad taste.”

That is exactly what they are.

    As my grandfather always said:
“I can stand the mean people. I can stand the stupid people. The only thing I can’t stand is the noveau riche.”

  20. Chief darling. Sarah Palin and her family left most their clothes with the RNC when they went back to Alaska, the other stuff was mailed back or were you to busy butt snorkling obama to hear that when Greta did her interview with Ms. Palin. This aint the first time the obama’s haven’t splurged at the expense of their constituents. If you took your head out of Barack’s butt you would have realize that the house he owns was paid for with money hatt should have been used giving his Chicago constituents heating, plumming, and a really good exsterminator. And since he has been in the senate the only thing he’s done is gotten michelle a 100,000 dollar raise.

Sorry ladies for the vulgarities i don’t visit here very much, since idiots like Cheif elected obama. trying to put in some extra hours at the job, to pay off some debt before this dumbasses choice for president crashes our economy. What these obots need to worry about is what they are going to do for heating, when obama bankrupts the coal industry which provides 50% of our electricity. And don’t think he won’t do it. If Rezko’s tennets and auntie lived in filth you will too.

  21. The “nouveau riche” are easily spotted. They are the ones who just have to tell you how much they paid for something just in case you did not know.

They are the worst of the worst as they have such a difficult time just getting over themselves!

  22. chief korrirr, the wardrobe $ was for Sarah Palin’s entire family (8 she mentioned); was returned to the RNC, which has said it would be donated to charity. Palin didn’t ask for it, shop for it, keep it or necessarily want it. Take it up with the RNC.

I don’t care what Obama buys his wife or what their tastes are. I do agree with what JA, at 9:06 am Said:

  23. Pat J — exactly — the worst of the worst — mean, stupid, and smug all rolled into one! LOL

  24. On closer inspection, that “designer” ring looks a lot like a washer I just replaced in my downstairs bathroom faucet.

  25. Pat J — LOL — I’ve always wondered about “designer” rings — um, its a circle. Throw some stones on it. I can “design” that.

  26. Imagine how impressed we might be if Obama made a $30,000 donation to say the Salvation Army in his wife’s name instead? That ring will more than likely sit in her jewelry box or get swallowed up by the new pet or be left on a shelf in the bathroom of some fashion mag whereas the SA could feed a few more down on their luck families this season.

    Oh well, priorities I suppose.

  27. bostonboomer, at 9:30 am Said:

“I’ve noticed this “chief” guy turning up all over lately. I wonder if Obama’s new fundraising drive is for more minimum wage astroturfers?”

Oops, I thought perhaps the paid commenters were passe or I wouldn’t have used the full name in my reply. OT Happy belated Birthday! I enjoyed your post about the moon and planets. The sight caught me unaware when I stepped out on my porch. So beautiful.

  28. This bit of bling is what two families living at the poverty level live on for an entire year … can we say selfish and out of touch?

  29. He could have gone to QVC or the Jewelry Network and really bought himself a bargain. They are even offering free shipping and handling!

The ring displayed above looks bulky and kind of hideous but then today I am not in the best of moods. A little snarky to say the least. Nonetheless, not impressed.

  30. angienc!!! I’m so glad you are here. This is totally off topic but I’ve been wanting to talk to you about your diabetic cat.

My cat buddy is diabetic and I’ve been giving him insulin 2x/day for nearly 3 years now. We watch his blood glucose carefully and he is tested about every 2 or 3 months. If you have a good vet tech pet sitter (which we do), they can also check the blood glucose at your house via your kittie’s ear. Its not hard at all once you get used to sticking them. My cat doesn’t even care anymore and he likes his Hills Science DM. We also reward him with 2 calories worth of Whiska Lickens treats when he gets his shot. Its totally doable. The only thing is going on trips. If you haven’t already done so, you can ask your vet if any of their techs pet sit. It works out really well.

  31. Just like those moronic and uneducated hip hoppers he so admires, “bling” is the first thing they buy to drape around their necks and put on their fingers just to show the world they “made it”.

He just never ceases to amaze me with his tone deafness. Ranks right up there with the arugula and waffles. Elitist!

  32. Thanks, RD, great post – gives us a great thread for the AM today.

Leading by example is such a rare thing. Case in point that the automakers had to be told that it didn’t look good to arrive pleading bankruptcy in their corporate jets.

  34. Hi Purplefinn,

Thanks! I’m glad you saw the Jupiter, Venus, moon conjunction. It was so bright here, I was almost startled when I saw it.

  35. The most galling aspect to his role as C in Chief is when he stood there the other day surrounded by experienced hands who now have to answer to him. Reminded me of an episode of Roseanne when she was working at a Burger King and her “boss” was a teen.

Looking at him that day evoked thoughts of having to be under the thumb of the boss’s son. A know nothing calling the shots.

  36. For what it’s worth, my sister, the one with the impeccable taste, took a look at the ring and pronounced it god-awful. I’m not a ring person, so who cares? Just a thought though, 4 yrs from now his “I’m just like you” schtik won’t work quite so well

  37. God knows I am judgmental, but it would have been even nicer if had dedicated that contribution in memory of Granny who just passed away instead of spending that amount of money on a ring. The human side of him may have emerged for once in his life rather than the egregious, grasping, greedy bent he is becoming famous for.

And according to HuffPo, a record number of people have been laid off in the month of November alone. How this will effect the further erosion of the economy remains to be seen but spending that obscene amount on a friggen ring is obtuse.

He just does not get it.

  38. Personally, I think buying (and yeeling out to the world) about the $30,000 ring is tres gauche (to say the least – I’m right with you, Pat).

But, gotta’ say the One’s tast REALLY sucks. That is one god-awful looking piece of jewelry! Schmuck that he is…

    -MS

  39. Micki!! Sorry — I left for a while (I’m at work lol!) Thanks for the news about your diabetic kitty — my BeBe is totally loving her Hills Science DM too! She is taking her shots like a champ — a little meow when the needle goes in & that’s it. When I went home for Thanksgiving I had her stay at the Vet’s office (they offer boarding services on site & administer all meds, etc) which is what I will likely do with her whenever I go out of town, as she is already 16 years old (and luckily, I don’t have kids, etc. so I can spare the money — well, not “spare” it exactly, but “spare” it more easily then other people with kids etc. probably could; also, unluckily for me I don’t go out of town that much). She is already acting much more “happy” — she actually played with me last night! She hasn’t done that in about 2 months (as she was sleeping all the time).
    Thanks for sharing!!

  40. Great post!

  41. Oops, shoould be ” “taste” and “yelling.”

    -MS

  42. I’m with those who think that ring is gawdawful.

It should go beautifully with the black and red vomit dress Michelle wore Election Night.

  43. Pat J — dedicate something in memory of granny? He couldn’t even be bothered to go to granny’s funeral! Really, as SOD would say: WHERE THE HECK IS GRANDMA?

  44. Madamab: It should go beautifully with the black and red vomit dress Michelle wore Election Night.

    O. M. G. That dress. The design was an almost exact replica of the red hourglass found on a black widow spider.

And that ring – it resembles one that is given to the NFL super bowl winners.

  45. Maybe MEchelle will go on The View and show off her ring.
    What a couple of assholes.

Does anyone know what Harold Ickes has been up to lately?
    (Harold, please, save us!)

  46. Delphyne,

Just what do you have against the NFL?

    -MS

  47. Delphyne:

And that ring – it resembles one that is given to the NFL super bowl winners.

Well, honestly, ME Chelle is about the size of an NFL linebacker, so there ya go.

    was that too mean? 🙂

  48. That dress totally looked like a black widow spider marking. It was really odd.

That ring – is that really the ring? – is just so ugly. Can’t Penny or Valerie give him some ring buying advice eesh.

The next 4-8 years are going to be a non-stop party to celebrate the unique wonderful historical wonderful uniqueness of Barack and Michelle. If anyone holds back on the generosity it will only show what a mean country this is.

  49. I thought that the dress looked as if she had thrown a bath mat over the front to cover up food stains. Hideous! I would not be so judgmental (I probably would but that is beside the point) if the fashionista’s weren’t so quick in putting her on display as some icon of taste by comparing her to Jackie O.

I knew Jackie O. Jackie O. was my friend. You, Michelle, are no Jackie O.

  50. If I know these doyenne’s of taste, they are working overtime now to make some comparison to MO as another Princess Di!

  51. Pat J — MEchelle as Princess Di? More like Princess Anne.
I don’t care how they dress her, fix her hair, make up, etc — the woman is simply not elegant.
Jackie O is rolling over in her grave at the comparison.

  52. I’ve got to get to work for a little bit! LOL

    See y’all later.

  53. angie: Princess Ann looks more like Seabisquit to be honest. Although I do believe that Seabisquit had a pleasant personality by comparison.

I should be slapped for saying that.

  54. perries – You mean, R*CIST!! OMG OMG OMG!!

Don’t worry, CNN is now discovering that canonizing Obama MAY not be the best idea. I’m SURE they will not fail in their journalistic duties any more.

    😉

  55. RD: “Funny how that works, inn’t? It looks like the one thing the well connected fear more than anything else is a return to The New Deal era. Well, I guess they won’t have to worry about that anymore, not with Obama in charge. That $600,000,000 is looking like a pretty good investment to them, probably.”

    *************

That makes so much sense. It’s so sad as well. Is that anther reason to keep Clinton out of the Senate – no pesky New Deal-like legislation?

  56. How about this HBG: we pick on you instead? Your inanities alone are full of potential. Have you been banned from TGW?
    Or are you branching out?

  57. Hey guys, HBG just pointed out that MO is the feminist ideal. I was looking for something to brighten up my morning and here it is.

  58. Making fun of presidents and their families is an American pastime.

  59. I’m sure that Hill has some very expensive jewelry too – but, Bill or she never talked about buying it or how expensive it was.

Someone earlier said that the nuveau riche always mention how much things cost -they are impressed with themselves – hmmmm enough said.

I’m sorry, what is your name again?

    Happy Crack Guy?

  61. I think the entire jewerly thing shows a level of shallowness benefitting a hollywood diva, but frankly, i think that some of these personal attacks on Michelle are reminding me of the ones on Palin and Hillary …

can’t we just leave it as it showing a high level of insensitivity on the part of a role model to go bling shopping during the worst recession since the 80s? It strikes me similar to what George H Bush did when he was clueless in the grocery store ….

  62. HBG — or believe me that is NOT the best we can do about B0 — the ring is just one small example that for all his alleged “sophistication” he is nothing more than a noveau riche pedestrian social climber.
If I really wanted to “pick” on B0 I would talk about the fact that he was a sub-par student, that he was only elected as president of the law review as a compromise candidate & how he has never held a full time job. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. How about discussing the fact that he has lied and cheated his way into EVERY office he has ever held? PUH-LEAZE.
And don’t come here telling me who is and who isn’t the “feminist ideal.”

  63. Happy Black Guy, who used to be Angry Black Guy, has just flown in to update us all on Michelle as the ideal feminist. According to him, MO does not take crap from no man. And here I thought that it was just Amy Winehouse who held that title!

  65. You’ve got a good point dakinikat, though I stand by my comment on the odd dress.

And allow me to paraphrase HBG to make a point:

And again, why are feminists so focused on attacking a smart woman in Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin who represent, in many ways, the feminist ideal. Self made. Confident. Beautiful. Takes crap from no man. Etc.

What about the Clintons? Good fun?

  67. I don’t know dakinikat — observing that MEchelle is noveau riche isn’t a personal attack — its a fact.

But, the NFL linebacker comment was probably too mean. sorry!

  68. purplefinn,

Oh, but absolutely! The ones who were spiteful about the Clintons – I don’t think we’d want to have much to do with. But here, can’t we laguh along at their foibles, sort of like the Kennedys and the “First Family?” (Anyone else here remember tthose riotous albums from the 60’s?).

  69. The media and the Obama campaign spewed made-up nonsense about Hillary and Sarah.

Michelle, otoh, is often criticized for the horrible, hateful, and insensitive things that she herself has said.

  70. I think our points were more directed at the press pumping these two up to unrealistic heights. We may have gone a little overboard here and there but it was mostly on the insistence that these two are wallowing in images that are undeserving and being shoved down our throats.

Other than that, I apologize for any unfair remarks I may have made.

  71. Pat Johnson: “Other than that, I apologize for any unfair remarks I may have made.”

🙂 What office are you running for?

  72. I apologize for nothing.
This King and Queen stuff is a slap in the face to the American people.
And as a self-proclaimed fashionista MO has sucky taste.
She is ugly and hard to look at b/c her insides are ugly.
This can apply to men too.
Everyone probably knows someone who could me attractive but
anger or meanness has found it’s way to the exterior.

Ok I admit I have the flu and may be babbling deliriously.
But MO as first lady is just too much.

  73. did I say “vote for Pat?”

  74. “I would like to spend more time with my family”. Another empty statement.

  75. For those who haven’t seen it:

    MSNBC Replaces Fox News

    Hilarious!

You have a point. I’m just so disappointed for my country, that I don’t find them humorous. Maybe some day. : (

  77. well, my priorities have never been on expensive clothes and trinkets, even when i had the opportunity to endulge in whatever I wanted, however, some women get off on that kind of thing for some reason…

i think however, when you’re a public figure and a role model, then you have to be more sensitive to the impression you make on folks, it’s a lesson Michelle is going to have to learn or she’s going to find herself in Nancy Reagan land … I was frankly suprised that the press wasn’t more outraged about the $3000 designer dress given all the hooplah about Sarah Palin’s wardrobe make over. Even the designer was unhappy at the results of the alterations that he had to made to get it to fit her. Seriously, she needs to get herself out there and involved in some cause or she risks being written off as shallow and selfish eventually. Character will out in the end.

  78. thanks dak
I knew you could dish it 😉

  80. MSNBC is even more ridiculous than Fox if that is at all possible. At least Fox does invite the “other side” on if only to try and make them appear unbiased. MSNBC is all Obama, 24/7 with no apologies or opposition enlisted.

    Propaganda at its finest.

  81. “FACT CHECK: Michelle Obama won’t get pricey ring
    20 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Looks like Michelle Obama won’t be setting aside her fake pearls in favor of a $30,000 thank you ring from her husband.

London tabloids reported that President-elect Barack Obama was buying a pricey rhodium ring from Italian designer Giovanni Bosco for his wife. But there’s no truth to the report, said Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer.

The rumor began overseas and made the rounds of American blogs, including the Drudge Report.

The office of Giovanni Bosco, reached in northern Italy, also said the reports were incorrect. ”

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iws_VLNyRvFjaUFcUOPxgJY-n-wAD94QOU6O0

  82. My two cents: for me, it’s all about the TIMING of the alleged ring. Hello? we are in the middle of a historic economic crisis. If he is buying that now, it is one of the most tone deaf statements he has made. I don’t care how grateful he is to her–have some sensitivity to people that are losing their life savings because your Wall St. cronies, who funded your obscene financial campaign, were greedy and reckless. Change, my butt.

And HBG: if respecting strong, self-made (even if her husband did give arrange big bonuses and job opportunities for her) women is the requirement for a feminist, then I guess that means Sarah Palin definitely qualifies huh?

  83. That’s an interesting thought dakinikat. I am curious and wonder what her causes will be? What is she interested in?

There really is a huge opportunity here to really be a powerful positive role model and have a great influence, especially on AA youth. Will she grasp that opportunity to be about something much larger than herself? Can a person turn a corner from entitlement to service?

I don’t know, but the opportunity is absolutely there.

  84. Hahahahah!

Style tells, RD. Sepkus very chic and charming…..

ps: McCain was over in India. Already. Just like he did the Georgia thing, or the financial crisis thing. What a MAN. Heroic.

    Class tells.

    hugs.

    (think Bastille Day, redux)——-
at the rate of the layoffs?
    Umm, hmmmmmmmmm.

  85. You know a narcissist is much more likely to buy himself a present. We’ll see!

  86. HBG – Still waiting for that awesome list of Obama’s awesome qualifications that awesomely qualifies him to be the most awesomest President evah.

Until you produce facts that prove that Obama has the qualifications and experience to be President, I am going to assume that you voted for him because he’s black.

That’s a perfectly fine reason to vote for him. I just would dearly love to hear an Obot admit it.

  87. But dahling, the Ickes are just so icky.

    Great post, riverdaughter!!

  88. happy black guy: I think you are missing the point. So what if Obama buys his wife a ring, although, *that* ring wouldn’t have been my choice. I can only speculate that rhodium is more flattering on a darker skin but the design? Yuck. No, the point is that just like Nancy Reagan got slammed for new China and like Hillary got accused of asking for housewarming gifts when she left the WH, Obama and Michelle are going to catch Hell for every little extravagant present. Hey, if he can afford it, go for it. But he can’t hardly claim he’s one of the little guys. Just sayin. This looks like a new Meme developing.
As for Michelle being dome kind of feminist role model, please. Michelle is *my* demographic. Well educated suburbanite with a creative class job and daughter in middle school. But I work and love my job where Michelle opted out to be Mom on Chief. Now, who am I to judge what a person does with her career? But after 8 fucking years of Stepford Wife Laura Bush, I was hoping for someone who really understands what it’s like to be a working woman with kids. Michelle ain’t it. And considering that Hillary raised an almost perfect child during Bill’s horrendous trial by fire, I am very disappointed that she is regressing as a feminist and sitting on the sidelines to be the mom with the afternoon milk and cookies. That just sticks in my craw and makes me want to hurt someone. I’d much rather that Michelle were controversial and suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune to make the Villagers evolve in the area of feminism. But Michelle seems to think she’s better off keeping a low profile. So on that respect, she is doing women more harm than good
But you really should be pressing Obama to list his donors. The Clintons had to do it and fair is fair.

  89. I love Sepkus. Something about his designs remind me of Gustav Klimt. Whimsical yet primitive.

  90. Remember the outrage at Cindy McCain’s convention jewelry choices?

    http://www.americablog.com/2008/09/cindy-mccain-wore-300000-outfit-to.html

  91. I am not so sure if Hillary being named SoS is a good thing. I look at this as a way the Clinton haters in the former Democratic party will purge themselves of both Bill and Hillary. After a few years she will resign and the Clintons will be left without a platform

  92. I guess I am just tired of the press shoveling the shit into my cornflakes every day. Neither of these two people have yet to demonstrate they give a hoot about anybody but themselves. Maybe someday they will but so far the signs do not look promising.

The Clintons hit the WH with a record of past achievements. These two rode in on a wave of “historical” hoopla. Just saying it was time for a black president isn’t good enough. He/she ought to at least have shown some measure of accomplishment in some area before the bells and whistles were heard.

Time will tell but for now, can we get back to reality?

  93. HBG:
I do not care if Obama buys his wife a $30,000 ring. I just do not think it is an appropriate news story. I felt the same about the story about the school where he is sending his daughters which costs $30,000 a year in tuition. If he really cared about his daughters safety, he would not tell the public where he was planning to send them. He is just a boastful parent who assumes we want to hear about his spoiled daughters and wife. Again I couldn’t care less about how much he spends on school or jewellery, but why does the msm assume that we enjoy living vicariously though the lives of the Obamas’, or any celebrity’s life for that matter?

  94. Ari: I think Sidwell Friends School is where Chelsea Clinton went and it’s main attraction was the level of security it provided. I don’t think anyone could argue that Sasha and Malia don’t deserve a safe place to learn. Private schools are expensive. I tried to get my Brook into one but she only managed to get on the waiting list at two of the best in Princeton. $30k sounds about right. I don’t know if that comes out of Obama’s pocket or the taxpayers but I don’t begrudge them that at all.
But if Michelle wants my respect, she will take up the cause of math and science education for girls and really push for legislation that would identify talented girls early and mandate equal placement of boys and girls in all upper level math classes.

  95. Briana — FACT CHECK my @ss — I expected these bs denials just like they did with the caviar & lobster story at the Waldorf — I fully believe he bought that ring, just like I fully believe MEchelle ate that lunch. I don’t care what FACT CHECK denials are issued. The press will pretend he didn’t buy the ring just like they pretended their wasn’t any fraud or voter intimidation during the primary.

  96. chief korrirr, uh yeah, that’s the point: The hypocrisy of Camp Obama. The media and the obots went nuts over Palin’s wardrobe but any money the Obamas throw around is just hunky dory. The fact that the presidency was just purchased for over $700 million should be cause for concern for everyone, not just PUMAs.

Personally I think the Palins are much more in touch with the realities of everyday Americans than the Obamas are. And, IMO, that counts for something.

  97. I’m with ya Angie! Fact check my a$$.

  98. I have no problem with where they send those girls to school: they need to be protected at all costs.

Just because I dislike the parents is no reason why these kids cannot benefit from the best education available. Had we all possessed the means to do so, we would also take advantage to ensure our own kids had the same opportunities.

  99. HBG: And here is the undercurrent to consider: America stretched its tolerance level to vote for a black president, but it may have stretched American sensibilties to vote for a black president with an overly strong black wife (given the stereotypes about black women).

Honestly, I don’t think Michelle would be allowed to do what Hillary did even if she wanted to. America sees black women as mean and angry in general and it would not have worked.

    WTF??

HBG: Please provide evidence or a link substantiating that point. I am open to being convinced.

    You really are a comedian.

  100. Time to educate this site. I’m shaking my head as I read these posts. “Nouveau Riche”? – Are you fu^%ing kidding me? Quit trying to be PC

The accepted Ebonic phrase my dear PUMA’s is BOUGIE pronounced (boo-gee) as is “that Bougie [unspeakable word]” The AA community will use that phrase in a heartbeat (myself included) and it describes That One and his wife perfectly.

Basically, an AA from humble beginnings comes into money and immediately has to show it off in the most flashy way possible. And of course, they just HAVE to tell you how much they spend on whatever (clothes, cars, house, parties). Just look at any hip-hop or rap video to get the idea.

Point is I knew that about Michelle when I first saw her. And opening her mouth only confirmed it. She’s going to make Nancy look like an amateur on the dragonlady scale. She’s already starting to show her endless red wardrobe.

Y’all might want to bookmark this site for future reference.

  101. And HBG, why you go twitch your Obamatron punkass someplace else?

and that’s from an Annoyed Black Man

  102. Just the fact that they HAD to have a mansion that they could not really afford……..

  103. TorchWood: I learn something new everyday. Bougie it is.

  104. Happy Black Guy: I guess this is something you will just have to take my word for. Michelle is not a feminist role model. In fact, she is deliberately undermining women by retreating so obviously back to the home. She is doing this to keep the Sally Quinns off her back. She is doing it so that she doesn’t become a Hillary. But the thing is, as long as she does that and accepts the DC Villagers role for her, she will become a symbol to the rest of us of a form of oppression. I’m sure there must be a similar icon in the african american community that would be the same thing. She’s sort of like a female version of an Uncle Tom.
I have nothing against women staying home if that’s what they want to do. But these assholes in DC have been trying their damndest to force First Ladies into a role that *they* feel comfortable with and that is not independent, opinionated or respected. THAT’S what I object to. Michelle is telling them this is OK and we just set ourselves back 4 years. I would like Michelle a lot more if she told Dean Broder and Queen Sally to kiss her ass. But she won’t do it and for that reason alone, I have less respect for her. She isn’t helping me, my daughters, HER daughters, or future first ladies when she ceases to be herself due to the pressure of a narrow minded conformist group of busybodies.

  105. Not wasting time, RD. I mean, at least let Bushco exit, no? First?
    I just read this…

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/12/03/politics/washingtonpost/main4645219.shtml

I wonder what the badges look like?

  106. So the point wasn’t that this happened, it was that we should “expect to see” stuff like this?

Man, I love stuff like this from you guys. Roar! PUMA power!

  107. M needs something that sparkles.

  108. riverdaughter, have you considered entering the twit Olympics?

I think you would do fine.
    ~

  109. I agree with Riverdaughter.

Consider Rendell’s sexist comment about Janet Napolitano. MO is not only buying into that attitude, she’s feeding it! A woman can’t have a job, much less an important one, AND take care of her family too.

IMO, the First Mom ploy shows that the Obama machine really does run on sexism. Why not call Obama “President Dad”?

  110. Wow..so much hate and discontent. So many false, misleading and absolutely spiteful statements…..

    Unreal.

The man (Whether or not it’s true) bought HIS WIFE a ring…who cares ?

If you can’t afford to do so…then go to Harvard, get a solid education , become a professor , marry a woman who’s equally educated and able to make income…..and shut up about what OTHER PEOPLE are doing w/ their money.

And yes …. The Obama are “New Money”.

So what ? Sounds like a room full of jealously to me 🙂

Rock On Obamas ! Rock On !

  111. P.P.S.S.

Riverdaughter do you know Michelle Obama ?

Do you know her personally ? How do you know she hasn’t simply chosen her children over her career (I know…such a bad..BAD choice ) ?

You don’t know the woman…and claim she’s “Not being herself” ….

You remind me of one of those Psychopaths..that watches well known pesonalities on T.V….and swears to god, that you have them COMPLETELY FIGURED OUT.
