Monday Night Open Thread

Just 7 more days until the election.  World Series game 4 suspended due to rain – first game suspension ever.  What’s on your mind?

160 Responses

  1. ah, the air smells fresher up here.

  2. thanks myiq – change no go to now gone

  3. Nite Heidi. I tried to vote for your post on RCP but they wouldn’t register me for some reason. You went over 100 anyway. As they say here in Oz, goodonya!

  4. Britannia — LOL

  5. Seriously must be new at this stuff.

When you argue with a troll, the troll wins

  6. Angie, I was only half-kidding. I mean you have to be a kind soul to even argue with tr0lls. 🙂

  7. I’d rather put hot pokers in my eye then talk to NoGo for one more second.

  8. ice on the deck here tonight – hope there’s more next tuesday

  9. what the hell is the matter with the BOTS today? They are ahead in the polls yet they are freaking out.

  10. 😛

  11. myiq, Seriously does it all the time. Probably the best tr0ll debater around.

  12. Angie:

    Don’t do that!

    Let Captain Spaulding do it

  13. Britannia — I got it — it was funny.

  14. yay! Seriously made it up to the “safe place”

  15. myiq — it’s a date!

  16. Hey, Seriously got out of there alive!

  17. weather.com forecasts 58 degrees, 40% chance of showers in only part of the state that polls as pro-BO

  18. Britannia:

During the wee small hours of on Friday night I was deleting some troll’s comments like crazy and Seriously was responding to them faster than I could delete them.

    Finally I gave up.

  19. Awwww, myiq and angie are back to dating again. Life has now returned to normal.

Now if I could just get Regency out of bed with the pantsuited beauty.

  20. During the wee small hours of on Friday night I was deleting some troll’s comments like crazy and Seriously was responding to them faster than I could delete them.

    Finally I gave up.

    LOL!

  21. btw — my cat is sitting on her butt licking her big fat tummy — she looks just like Buddha when she does that (and that’s how she got her name — Buddha).

  22. LOL

  23. Come now, every now and again it’s a guilty to pleasure to toy with tr0lls.

  24. What’s with the cat descriptions tonight? One has legs wide open, the other one is licking her big fat tummy.

But Buddha is, indeed, a good name for that description.

  25. scrubs — sshh!! myiq is shy about our love 🙂

  26. btw — my cat is sitting on her butt licking her big fat tummy — she looks just like Buddha when she does that (and that’s how she got her name — Buddha).

Yup, I know that pose. (Re a cat, I mean, not me.)

don’t you lose interest quickly when they don’t present a challenge?

  28. The best part about baseball is playing it. After my accident, I haven’t been able to run too fast without putting myself in a lot of pain. So I make do with the second best part of baseball: the smell. The patina of grass, hot dogs, humanity, all of it wafting up off of the ground. It really smells like home, and it’s a pleasant change from the city smells (grime, exhaust, hobo urine) that cling to the grey places that encapsulate American humanity as much as baseball does.

  29. Why engage in a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed?

  30. *sighs* That was like 3 weeks ago, myiq! Let it go! LOL

Why do I get picked on for talking to trolls when there were 37,0000 comments addressed to sharon? I only talk to them if they keep coming back and they’re going to stick around regardless and if nobody else is having conversations at the time.

  31. scrubs — I related the story about my cat because Britannia told us about hers in the other thread before we were so rudely interrupted & I wanted to tell you about Buddha. I’ve only had her for about a month now (friend’s child developed allergies and I love her!! Her name was Sasha, but I renamed her — she doesn’t care).

  32. Mmm I don’t know something got their dander up today, I got called a c&nt 45 more times than i normally do. 🙂

  33. *sighs* That was like 3 weeks ago, myiq! Let it go! LOL

Plus you talk to them sometimes too, what about katy who was embarassed as a woman? Huh? Huh?

  34. Cats have their own, secret names that they never share with us.

  35. No-go — I could tell you had a head injury. Thanks for the confirmation.

  36. Hit by a bad pitch huh? So that’s how Barry relieves his frustrations.

  37. myiq — exactly — there is a poem that talks about a cats three names — formal, nickname & real name that they don’t share. I can’t remember it now — I’ll google & be back.

  38. can I ask a favor? can we keep the cat talk down a bit? I got 4 mailers from BO today, so I lined the cage with them, and the parakeets are currently crafting my reply, and the cat talk might sitfle their “creativity”. Thanks!

Oh, Deej,GP,Bayboo and Digit also thank you.

  39. afrocity — I figured Barry hit him the head with a baseball bat for failing to genuflect fast enough.

  40. kitchen
Yes, I do lose interest rather quickly… It is a cheap “thrill”

  41. Addressed to the world in general, some people never recover from encounter Kerouac at a tender age.

  42. T.S. Eliot of course (the last two verses):

    But above and beyond
there’s still one name left over,
    And that is the name that you will never guess;
    The name
that no human research can discover–
    But The Cat Himself Knows,
    and will never confess.

When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought,
of the thought of his name:
    His ineffable effable
    Effanineffable
    Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Ok kitchen — no more cat talk.

  43. What’s with the cat descriptions tonight? One has legs wide open, the other one is licking her big fat tummy.

scrubs, it’s just a stream of consciousness thing. Just ignore me when I do that. In fact, ignore me. It won’t hurt my feelings. 😀

  44. Seriously — especially when they are still at that tender age. LOL

  45. Seriously — we aren’t picking on you — we find it positively endearing!

  46. Yay angie is back! I feel better now. Now, if only the polls in those six swing states were looking better. Hopefully Joe and Tito are going to resonate soon. Good night all!

  47. The world is chock full of hobos ridin’ the rails

  48. The worst part of baseball though is the fans. Fatter than the pricks who turn out for NASCAR, and just as useless. The vicarious experience is popular in the western world, I guess.

Part of me wants to blow it all up. The TVs, the internet, anything that lets people hide in an experience that isn’t genuine.

Because really when you get down to it if all you generate is memory, you’re a nonfactor. You haven’t done or said or produced anything of value, or made any difference to anyone other than your cats.

  49. This Puma is signing off.

remember our dream guys BO, Ayers and Rezko on the sofa watching the inauguration

    I see RED STATE PEOPLE.

  50. Nite afrocity.

  51. night afrocity — I’ll do my visualization!

  52. Awwwww. 🙂

  53. Sorry, you can talk cats, just don’t use the CAPS key. They are upstairs, and can’t hear the “lower case” stuff 🙂

  54. night xyR — and you have nothing to feel bad about — I really just needed a break from the election in general.

  55. kitchen — lol!

  56. “I see RED STATE PEOPLE.”

    LOL Night afrocity

  57. Something in this thread keeps crashing my browser

  58. Ooooo, cool cat poem, Angie. Ok, I’ll stop with cats also.

  59. nite afrocity

  60. No-Go — you don’t make much sense but I’ll tell you one thing, you better lay off my cats because they have more value to society then you — they catch rats, they don’t vote for them.

  61. Oh, don’t forget to put out THE TRASH

    love you all.

  62. I feel the same way, angie. I almost skipped tonight, but I’m so glad I didn’t because you came back. 🙂

  63. Why do I get picked on for talking to tro lls when there were 37,0000 comments addressed to sharon? I only talk to them if they keep coming back and they’re going to stick around regardless and if nobody else is having conversations at the time.

Plus you talk to them sometimes too, what about katy who was embarassed as a woman? Huh? Huh?

    LOL! Seriously is being defensive.

  64. “they catch rats, they don’t vote for them.”

    LOL!

  65. Brit–myiq is mean! WAHHHH!

  66. G’night afrocity!

  67. Talk to you later, afrocity.

  68. Britannia — The entire thing is “The Naming of Cats” by T.S. Elliot.
fun fact — the play “Cats” is taken from Eliot’s book of poems “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”

  69. Seriously:

There’s no crying in baseball. Or blogging

  70. don’t get me wrong… love cats… 16 years worth

  71. My cat thinks he’s the king of the cats.

    But all tomcats think that.

  72. Since I told you about Buddha (aka “Boo”) I feel remiss if I don’t tell you about Montgomery Clift (“Monty”) my other cat — he is 14 years old, all black with green eyes & just about the prettiest cat you’ve ever seen. Ok, no more.

  73. I think crying bring forth a shock to the tear ducts that separates you from the teaming mass of humanity. There are 800,000 stories in thr naked city. If we don’t make people cry, what are we doing on this rough violent planet? What exestential scream are we leaving for posterity?

  74. angie just gave us the full monty

  75. myiq — my Monty is the king of cats — in this house at least. He (cough) was (cough) a tomcat. I’m not sure what you call him now. when I found him 14 years ago he could fit in the palm of my hand & looked like a little lump of coal. Now he is 17 pounds! (Buddha, btw, who isn’t as long as Monty is 20 lbs) My cat food bill is ridiculous.

  76. myiq — in your dreams (for now).

  77. Angie, thanks! I’ve googled the book. I learn something new everyday…

  78. Seriously — back away from the Kool Aid!

  79. Britannia — you are welcome! and that is so true (learn something new every day).
I’m sure you will enjoy it!

  80. Oh I read that! Most of the song lyrics come straight out of the book.

  81. And then Andrew lloyd Webber cashed the check. LOL

  82. {whisper} one of my favorite c – a – t names was MT. anything got in the house, she caught it within minutes, yet really sweet tempurrrment. her full name was MouseTrap

  83. 17 pounds! 20 pounds! I believe you when you say they’re pretty. I’ve never seen an ugly cat. There was a time when I didn’t know that.

  84. I’ve seen a few ugly cats

  85. scrubs, you still here?

  86. I think Scrubs went bye bye

  87. anyone who doesn’t visit lolcats everyday is missing some funny stuff

  88. Seriously — I’ve read T.S. Eliot loved cats that is what lead him to write the poems in the first place — a lot of really outstanding people are/were cat lovers? Ernest Hemingway, Sir Issac Newton, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Sir Walter Scott, Monet, Renoir, the Prophet Mohammed, Dr Albert Schweitzer, Mark Twain & Teddy Roosevelt (to name a few) — I think it is a trait of really, really smart people.

  89. myiq – is it stilll yesterday where you are?

  90. Dogs have owners – cats have staff

  91. It is for a little bit longer

  92. On of my favorites (because it makes fun of the bated/baited breath) is this comic poem by Geoffrey Taylor:

    Cruel Clever Cat

    Sally, having swallowed cheese,
Directs down holes the scented breeze,
    Enticing thus with baited breath
Nice mice to an untimely death.

  93. having 11 indoor cats, standing over the kiddie pool we used as a litter box, “staff” doesn’t quite say it…

it is tomorrow here, gotta get some sleep
    nite all

  94. I love cats, unfortunately my family are dog people. Some of my earliest memories are being wrestled to the ground and literally walked all over by huge dogs. Ow. I would definitely think cats are more condusive to thought and creativity.

  95. I’ve got two dogs two — but they hardly qualify as dogs — one is a chihuahua & one is a maltese. Yep, that’s 4 animals; 1 person at casa angie. As my brother has told me time & again — I have got to stop “rescuing” these animals.

  96. night kitchen!

  97. I posted this 2 posts back.

Angelina is back! Happy, happy, joy, joy. 🙂 🙂 ❗

  98. I’m getting sleepy, probably from all those pills I just took. Or maybe it was the tequila.

Anyway, I’m gonna get some sleep while the Captain is out.

I’ll be back in a few hours (I never sleep more than 4) to clean up any messes left in this thread.

    G’night!

  99. Hi Fredster!!! Love you — must have missed your post!

  100. Night myiq — sweet dreams of me (and thanks for get thisclose to loading up the clown car!) I’m going out shortly myself.

  101. Nite myiq.

  102. Yeah, those are the dogs I like, little nonthreatening lap type dogs. I call them dog sized dogs.

  103. geez, my canine friends are getting the short end of the stick!

  104. Seriously — “dog sized dogs’ — I call them “cat sized dogs” And actually, each one of my cats is bigger then the two dogs put together (one dog is 5 lbs & the other is 6!).

  105. Seriously,
I don’t know about that, you’ve never seen my dog get “creative” when trying to find her favorite toy, which she knows by name. Cats are cool and all, but the really cool thing about dogs is their never ending unconditional love they show their owners, my dog is always happy to see me no matter what mood I’m in or how crappy I am towards her, not so sure a cat would treat me the same way. 😉

  106. Sorry jvsp! I’m sure you’re a responsible pet owner and your dogs aren’t scary!

  107. jsvp — what do you expect? all of us old female bitter knitters are cat lovers! LOL

  108. angie–that’s hilarious! Do teh cats get aggressive with teh dogs?

  109. I have a Rat Terrier by the way and her name is Roxi 🙂

I dig medium/smaller dogs, much easier to manage than horse sized doggies. (besides I live where a big dog would be a waste anyway)

  110. I’ll probably be signing off soon. My back was killing me today (weather changed, coolish & windy, tonite down in the 30s so I took an Aleve. Couple hours later still not much change so I got one of the momster’s darvocets. Then, after getting ready to read the blogs I took the normal nite time 1/2 xanax and a sleep md. About 5 minutes ago I remembered about the darvocet!

    Happy, happy, j o yzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  111. My pup is a 100 Lbs + rotty mix. The jehov witless are always happy to go, but he is a real sweety!!!

  112. Fredster, please, be careful with those meds!

  113. Oy about the dogs. My poor little doxie has been scratching and itching…they had her on an anti-fungal and anti-biotic but they haven’t helped much so I had to go to the vet today to get Atopica. OY! It’s one pill a day for a month, so 30 pills. They got me 2 boxes of 15 and it was $92 and change! If this doesn’t help, then I’m giving her benadryl daily and it will just be a zonked out little Chloe 😦

  114. LOL Feel better, Fredster.

So tell me, jvsp–when you get a new big dog, does it always go through a period of adjustment when it bites and scratches and jumps and charges at you and attacks and stuff? Or can you avoid that somehow?

  115. So Palin campaigned in pouring rain and didn’t even ask for an umbrella. Gotta love this lady.

And while Obama and his supporters may have ambitions of carrying Virginia for the Democrats for the first time in more than four decades, on the evidence of the 6,000 or so people who waited for hours and braved a freezing rainstorm to hear Palin speak — one of three campaign stops by the Alaskan governor across the state Monday — Republicans have no intention of surrendering without a fight.

“Keep Virginia Red,” reads one of dozens of banners capturing the mood of the audience.

“I love Sarah Palin. She’s just like I am. She’s a straight talker. You may not agree with what she has to say but she’s going to tell you the truth,” says government employee Jeanette Montoya. “I hope she gets in there and takes out the trash.”

Speaking under ominous skies that quickly spill open into a downpour that leaves her soaked but her folksy enthusiasm undimmed — “By the way, I love this weather because it reminds me of home.” — Palin’s message is blunt, unequivocal and ideally pitched to an audience that requires less convincing on policy issues than reassurance that they are still in the game and in with a shouting chance.

  116. I think it is a trait of really, really smart people.

Man, how could I have missed that! Yes, of course it’s true!

  117. Well jvsp, I had forgotten about it cuz the back eased up!

Nothing to worry about really, I’ll just sleep! “In the day” I do Placydil with beer chasers! (kinda shrinking down at dumb stunts of youth!)

  118. Seriously — no, they all get along — mainly because the cats are gentle & the dogs are smart enough to see that the cats could kick their a$$es! Monty & Pepa (the chihuahua) actually curl up & sleep together — Pepa was a puppy when I brought her home & Monty was 8. I think when one is a “baby” the adult animal is always gentel. Jacquimo (the maltese) whom I’ve had for 2 years was 2 when I got him but he is very, very submissive (he was badly abused & is just happy to have a home) so even though he doesn’t sleep with Monty like Pepa does, he doesn’t bother him either. Buddha is still “new’ here (one month), but she is an extremely affectionate lap cat kind of kitty. She & Monty are already rubbing noses, following each other etc. She & the dogs just kind of ignore each other.

  119. Okay folks nighty-night!

  120. Seriously, we are not his original owners. He was abused, but he has come a long way with lots of love and care. He can be a handful 🙂 My previous dog was a terrier, so I have no experience with raising the big ones.

  121. night Fredster! be careful

  122. Awww, that’s sweet. 🙂

  123. …gotta keep track of your pets… they might have voted…

  124. Yeah….I think it’s probably that my family don’t know what they’re doing, but all our big dogs have been very aggressive. I just dread when they bring home another one because it’s like every day being scared and getting hurt.

Dog sized dogs! Dog sized dogs! lol

  125. jvsp — my mom & dad have an 85 lbs rotty mix named Venus — yes, I rescued her — literally found her in the park when I was running (well, speed walking but that sounds so stupid) — she was starving, abandoned, all torn up. Anyway, I took her to the vet, got her all better etc. She lived with me for 2 months until my condo association started billing me for having her (she was like, 60 lbs over the pet weight limit in the covenants!) I talked my mom & dad into keeping her until I got a place with a yard — that was 3 years ago! Anyway, the adore her & wouldn’t part with her now for anything — she looks so scary & mean but she is the sweetest dog you could ever meet.

  126. Oh my goodness, your furry friends are so sweet, Angie. I used to have a former feral cat and he was the sweetest. I love dogs of all sizes, too. I love animals.

Ok, I have to sign off to check what virus my security software has in quarantine. Have sweet dreams everyone.

BTW, I’m reporting scrubs as AWOL. She’s supposed to be on duty around this time.

  127. Seriously — you’ve got to watch the Dog Whisperer & learn how to be “pack leader” — really, that’s a great show.

  128. What kind of dogs? They need discipline, regularity, and socialization. I would be terrified in your shoes! geeez!

  129. night Britannia! I’m an animal lover too, but I honestly prefer cats — deep down I am the crazy cat lady — and if I ever moved out to the country I’d have about 100 cats running around (all spayed & neutered, of course). LOL

  130. OMG — I can’t believe it is 3:00 am! I have to be up in 4 hours! Good night all — love you!!

  131. Night, Brit.

Yeah, I’m the opposite of the pack leader! LOL The dogs (they’re labs but they weigh more than 150 each) weigh more than I do, so when they charge me, especially outside in the open, they can knock me over and I just don’t know what to do. I’m like “stay back,” but, um, they don’t listen!

  132. Night angie! Love you too!

  133. angienc
Awww, that’s a great story!!! Lucky pup! The big black dogs are the least likely to be adopted 😦 My family was looking to move and one of the houses had our pup. We didn’t buy the house, but we asked for the pup! The home owners were going to drop him off at the humane society. Anyway, he didn’t miss a beat, never missed em!

“Anyway, the adore her & wouldn’t part with her now for anything — she looks so scary & mean but she is the sweetest dog you could ever meet.”

    Yeah, big babies LOL!

  134. jvsp — exactly — the vet I took Venus to was at a no-kill shelter & I told them I would pay for her treatment (and to get her fixed) but I needed someone else to adopt her (because of my condo rules with big animals). I asked the chances of her getting adopted they told me “slim to none” (because she has other stuff besides rotty in her, you can see the rotty). So, I agreed to “foster” her until they found a home for her — the rest, as they say, is history! LOL.
Anyway, good night for real all.

  135. g’night!

  136. I am tempted to see what’s going on on the other thread…willl ignore tr oll…will ignore tro ll…

  137. Oh God, Palin campaigned in the rain. Please don’t tell me there is a picture of her with her fist pumped into the air and the rain falling behind her – I may have a heart attack on that one (in case you hadn’t heard, that picture of Hill in the rain is my favorite).

  138. Hillbuzz says McPalin WILL win Pennsylvania:

Tonight we spoke with a friend from Hillary Clinton’s campaign who is now working for McCain/Palin — and is specifically working with Democrats for McCain in Pennsylvania. We worked with her in Texas, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for Hillary and have spent many LONG hours with her in the trenches in all of those states. She’s smart, doesn’t BS, and never lies.

She says the same thing we do: John McCain will win Pennsylvania.

On November 4th, the news networks are going to be spinning and sputtering and playing catchup, but everything we see on the ground in PA is what we saw during the primaries: Obama has no shot of winning the Keystone State.

Here is specifically what we talked about tonight: never in any of our careers have any of us ever seen members of one party switching sides and voting for the other party as we see in this election with Democrats for McCain.

  139. Wow, good stuff, myiq.

Was that 4 hours of sleep?

  140. afrocity,
The ‘bots are freaking out because yet another statement from Obama about the need to “redistribute the wealth” has shown up. An interview from 2001 ( I think) that says that he believes the civil rights movement failed because they didn’t figure out a way to take money away from one group and give it to another.

  141. srubs57
Then you shouldn´t go to this site

    http://www.spotsygop.com/2008/10/more-pics-from-sarah-palin-visiting.html

No fist but a forefinger 😉

Love that Hillary pic in the rain, too 🙂

  142. Fredster,

If you are still around regarding the Atopica. My dog was also on Atopica. It was costing me $100 a month for the meds and that was in addition to the special dog food and anti fungal shampoo just to prevent break outs. I went to a specialist and she proscribed Cyclosporine which is Atopica. I get it a Walgreens and iit is now costing me only $46 a month. I also had allergy tests done on the dog and once we determine exactly what she is allergic to we can begin allergy shots.

    Good luck!

  143. melusine08

Those are nice but nothing like this:

  144. morning all sorry I was exausted yesterday went to bed at 7pm was out cold at 705pm! sometimes you dont know how tired you are until your head hits the pillow.

  145. A good night, you guys: angie back, myiq mellow, lots of talk of kitty cats and dogs and parakeets , and some poems up. You’re a great bunch. Sorry I had to go to sleep.

  146. {{{{angie is back}}}}

  147. scrubs57

    Exactly, thanks for sharing.

  148. I smell salt air and I am 42 miles from the sea what does th ole’ fuzzybear smell is it the approaching ocean because of global warming? no he smells the tide turning! Oh it is so sweet a smell but it is bittersweet for the lady was not invited-

  149. sorry trying to be poetic at 7 am is tuff

  150. we will see the media begin to admitt they were wrong when they start talking about hillary supporters possibly lying to pollsters to corrupt the data!

what if 1/2 of the 54-58% of Hillary supporters that say they ar voting Obama/Biden dont…what if they lied?

  151. Obama wants to call off election and save money for the economic problems is willing to accept McCains Concession on November 3rd!

  152. “No fist but a forefinger”

Okay, that didn’t mean what I first thought.

Pardon me, I have to go wash out my dirty mind

  153. fuzzy, the tide had never gone out.

  154. Fuzzy:

Turning of the tide or tidal wave?

I hope McCain wins so big if the Obots claim there was cheating it will be like “So what if the GOP cheated in Ohio? How do you explain the other 46 states Obama lost?”

  155. Remember the religious bigot who said that KO’s bs about taking Hillary in a room and only one of them leaves didn’t imply killing her?

Now he’s slamming Heidi Li and guess who?

  158. mawm myiq2xu you are all so right but the media has to make up a reason they were so wrong!

  159. fif: I have a trivial comment, and excuse me for being a picky little pedant. An apologist is not one who apologizes, but : “one who speaks or writes in defense of someone or something.:(Merriam -Webster). And that’s what I thought you were doing in your excellent post. You ARE an apologist for Hillary, and that’s a good thing!
