One of Trump’s constant cries is that American allies aren’t spending enough on their militaries and that the US is thus carrying them. While there is a temptation to scorn this argument because it was made by Trump, it has a fair bit of truth to it, as Matt Stoller suggested today: The American military […]

Conflucian Cocktail Party: Dig Deep

This has been a very expensive election season.  The candidates may have racked up over a billion dollars in donations.  John McCain took public financing for the general, which makes me feel good because I’ve been checking off that damn box on my tax return for as long as I can remember.

But the election season isn’t over yet and there are still a lot of downticket races that could use your help.  If you can’t send money, consider donating your time.  You can do phone banking from home or canvass during the weekends.  It will all be over soon.  Just a little more effort and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief.

And clean our houses.

Welcome to the Conflucian Cocktail Party.  This is the time of day where we collapse in a heap and chill with a drink.  The bar is to the left of the door and is manned by Rico, our bartender with flair.  Tonight’s special drink is a Coup de Grace.  We are also offering Causmos at $10.00 a piece.  Tonight, you can purchase a causmo for Democrats for Principle before Party to help them buy ads to run during the World Series.  Or you can help our ActBlue candidates.  Or help us reach the 30% solution by contrbuting to The Fab Four (Stender needs some yard signs.)  OR, you can help Hillary’s candidates through HillPac.  (Just skip the first guy)

Tonight’s entertainment is the Canadian with the smokey voice, Diana Krall.  Here’s the perfect song for the holdouts who still love Hillary in spite of her indentured servitude to the Obama campaign:

Ladies and gents, we have a classy joint here.  There will be no emotional manipulation or peer pressure applied here.  If you feel the need to convert someone, please go directly to Florence, our lovely checkroom attendant and she will be happy to take your trigger words for you. The waiters will be circulating shortly with samosas and chicken sate and peanut sauce. Please drink responsibly and tip your wait staff generously.

And join us at 10PM EST for Conflucians Say on PUMA United Radio (PURrrrr)

  1. Rico, I’ll have an Alabama Puma Slammer, please.

  2. Rico, I’ll have a beer. Do you have any pumpkin ale?

  3. Did anyone else catch McCain at the AL Smith dinner just now? I know they have people write their material, but I was rolling on the floor..and so was Hillary.

  4. I missed most of it!!!!
    Damn!!!!
I didn’t know it was on.
    Is Hillary going to speak???
    I am not watching BO.
Oh, and thanks all for being concerned about my vegetarian adventures.

  5. I’ll have a sugar-free koolaid on ice. (No, not that kind of KoolAid! I don’t want the calories going to my hips, I’m joining an indoor soccer league!)

I have to say, something strange is going on in WA state. All of a sudden Obama is running commercials every break. It didn’t start until this week, certainly not on the scale it now is. Not to mention all the other ads for Gregoire and Rossi and Reichart and Darcy Burner. The great thing about living in a safe state and district is not getting bombarded with propaganda, er, commercials.

  6. watching SNL debate skewering.

  7. McCain was great. Barry praising Hillary, but sounds disingenuous to me. No nearly as funny as McCain.

Main thing: He seems to have a problem delivering self-effacing humor convincingly. Perhaps it’s part of the Narcisstic Personality Disorder.

McCain had much better writers for broad appeal, and, better delivery. Barry is too much inside, and self-conscious. Aha! He has to look down at notes – NO TELEPROMPTER! That’s why he’s not smooth!

  8. Didn’t some polls show WA neck and neck a while back? It might be why Obama is running commercials–he’s in danger of losing the state.

  9. Rico – a nice white Californian wine please – I’m not a brnad snob, so the house white wine will do (plus I’m broke!)

  10. I just heard about McCain at the dinner. My McCain-hating friend (hey, I don’t like McCain either!) said he enjoyed it. Must’ve been good.

  11. McCain was marvelous. He has exquisite comedic timing. Hillary was doing belly laughs and I was too.
Now Obama is on. He is falling flat. Just reading his lines.

  12. BRNAD = Brand

    Sorry

  13. on SNL they are saying Joe the Plumber is McCain’s imaginary friend and he lives in a ciggarette box with the invisable Simon.

  14. Ga6th, the polls were never that close. It could be because the absentee ballots just went out recently.

    (sadness) I missed Hillary’s laughing.
    Will she speak???

  16. Our friend GQMartinez wrote a very good post at Corrente.

The attached comment thread OTOH, is disturbing.

    http://www.correntewire.com/unfounded_allegations

  17. Well, it’s certainly curious that Obama would be wasting money in WA. It certainly doesn’t sound good for him. Dukakis carried WA so I can’t imagine that Obama would be doing poorly there but you certainly never know. We’ve seen how wrong the polls can be about him numerous times.

And isn’t Darcy Burner losing her race rightr now?

  18. And Simon is a unicorn

  19. I’ll run to the TV if Hillary comes on…otherwise, NO.

  20. frequent BO ads here in So Cal also…. I can’t figure out if he’s in some sort of trouble or just has more money than he knows what to do with….

  21. Holy crap Obama is just giving his stump speech at the dinner.
    Loser.

  22. OldCoastie:

I keep seeing tv spots for Teh Precious here in Central Calif.

Highly unusual – we don’t see many ads during the national campaign.

  23. McCain knocked that speech out of the ball park and, yes, Hillary loved the speech. When Obama came on, I ran out of the room and said to hubby, “McCain is just a better person than Obama.”

Maybe if he had waited 8 years and got some real knowledge and learned some humility.

  24. myiq, its really just one or two folks who like to ruin the Corrente threads. One of the persons–pretty obvious who–is so full of themselves you can almost see each word they type sticking it’s nose up at you. You can tell I get to them because they resort to name calling and condescension. It really is fun to be talked down to by this person. Two of my Thesis committee members are members of the National Academies and have won some pretty prestigious awards. If I can prove my worth to them, I’m not so much concerned about proving myself to an anonymous poster who nearly got Corrente sued.

  25. sm: It was worth watching to see McCain call out Tweety and Keith. Everyone laughed when JM talked about a nonpartisan media, just like ACORN is nonpartisan.

Obama was not expecting this really nice, funny McCain.

  26. McCain was wonderful. It was great to see my Pantsuity Wife (in sparky cream colored silk) laugh again. Can’t say that enough.

Can anyone find a youtube link?

  28. From the last thread, no I dont’ feel like the SS protects my girl well enough. It scares me sometimes that people forget her in the crush to protect the other guy.

  29. myiq – perhaps he is desperately seeking a “mandate”? something’s up – I think it’s weird.

  30. Burner was trailing by 10 points not too long ago, but she sent me an email saying she was up 5 points. My guess it’s pretty even. One thing that may play a role in WA is that Gregoire barely won last time–took two recounts to settle things–and the GOP is fired up to take her out this time. That may impact the presidential race and the down ticket races.

  31. Listening to Sugar n Spice on NQR [I love listening to them, they are so funny and smart] and heard one say [I was typing so I don’t know who], ‘we know ACORN is registering dogs and cats..’

(GASP) I didn’t see our pantsuity wife!!! Needz Link!!!

Oh, I will have to look for google images…

  33. For some reason, when Obama was trying to be self-deprecating, some of them worked, some of them seemed forced …

  34. littlesis: I don’t think it’s up on YouTube just yet.

  35. JOHN: Bill Clinton hurled epithets at me like “American Hero” and “Great Man”…

    Lol.

  41. GQM:

Remember when we were the “reality-based community?”

I thought reality was grounded in fact, not opinion.

  42. Hannity totally went fashion police on Hillary’s purse for a second. He was like wondering whether is cost $5000 but he stopped himself. Can’t decide if he thought he was going a bit too Jay Manuel for Fox or if he’s trying not to piss us off.

WOW. Hannity as a fashion police…
    Lmfao. Lmfao.

  46. Lil Isis: Okay no more nightmares. I’ll just have dreams instead.

  47. pollster is showing CA a walk for BO with a 53/40 lead…. for some reason, I randomly and without reason dock BO 7 points…. even then, he is up by 6….

but frankly, I can’t imagine he is up by even 6 in this area… I’ve been counting bumper sticker ratios (long commute – must stay amused!) and it is almost daily 1:1

outside of his voters right along the coast, I just can’t imagine how he might win by 6%…

  48. Barry just snubbed Henry Kissinger on the way out of the Al Smith dinner.

  51. OldCoastie:

California was never supposed to be in play this year, but I bet the final vote is closer than the polls are showing.

  52. hey! we need to get Joe the plumber on PUMA radio!

  53. I second GQ’s opinion on WA. The rabid anti-Gregoire folks will be out in force voting R, R, R..all the way home.

I still maintain that WA could be in play.

On that note, it’s lose lose with my hateful Obama sibs. Mean-spirited gloated should the unthinkable happen with BO winning, or I will be personally responsible for his loss with my one vote from Washington State that went red this year.

    (giggle)

  55. Patsy just said she will give the Obots credit, they are a very dedicated bunch of idiots. Hilarious.

  56. Forgive the quality of the vid but it’s so worth it! Watch Lil Isis.

  57. what did Obama do to mock Joe the Plumber? Was it really bad?

  58. PG for me means “Pretty Graphic.”

  59. Greta is replaying McCain’s highlights and it is hilarious.

  60. Lately the threads here take some interesting twists

  61. I watch the Al Smith dinner and all upthreads that lauded McCain speech were right. He was great. Obama wasn’t anywhere near as good. But what I also found truly telling and interesting was the introduction of the two candidates. McCain was first and his introduction was spectacular. His long service to the nation, his work and some of his accomplishments. It really was good. But I had to turn the channel to C-Span to catch the introduction for Obama because of the blowhards on Fox. It was starkly empty and I was again struck by the emptiness of his work and accomplishments before running for President. The reporters there should be ashamed.

  62. McCain speaking at a dinner (on Fox) – he’s pretty funny! (Hillary’s there)

  63. sorry, joanie. The good thing about my siblings is that we always agree about politics.

  64. Fox is replaying the Alfred E. Smith charity dinner if anyone is interested.

  65. Mac is pretty pointed…

  66. Regency, on October 16th, 2008 at 10:02 pm Said:

Especially with our pantsuity wife in that glittery number.
OMG McCain is hilarious. And Hillary is dying. So was I. I was rolling. McCain steamrolled him!!!

  67. You are so out of your league, Barack. He & Hillary just outclass you by miles.

  68. You can tell that BO hates the jokes about him — he has the face of the actress who doesn’t win the Oscar look.

  69. OMG, I am watching and I am cracking up. I stepped on Isis the Magick kitten so I had to apologize. She is all ready distressed from having so many ACORN workers trying to register her to vote.

  70. I hate to say it but I like ol’ Mac…

  71. Seriously, that was the case until this year. And now it is a civil war. There are two particularly ugly Obots among my sibs that were very recently close to me.

I have written about this here before, but tmy Obot sibs gathered together to plan a Christmas holiday here in Seattle (two flying in from out of town), and they kept it a secret from me to attempt to exclude me-as punishment for refusing support to BO. I only found out from another sib who thought I would have been let in on the plan.

It is literally the most painful things that I can recall ever happening to me with my family. I still have to steady myself from tears, and have no idea how to get throught that time.

It is a cult plain and simple. Normal people do not forsake family that they’ve always been close to in order to show loyalty to a politician. And a sleazy, lying f*@k-face at that.

Seeing her laugh makes my heart soar.

  73. Obambi’s speech sucked.

  74. Isis: Mine too. She was like “how awesome is he!” with her laugh.

  75. IQ,
We’re all prone to moments of weakness. I don’t hold lapses in judgment or emotional outbursts against people. Some folks, however, are incorrigible. My favorite are the ones who think they are so S-M-R-T, but end up proving the point they were trying to counter. I like to egg them on just enough for their arrogance and ignorance are apparent to everyone. No, I don’t just do that online. It’s an ugly habit I have. A few of my friends like to play that game with me and we stay up til 2am debating the movie “Red Eye”. God, I miss those homies.

  76. For the 30% solution:

    2008-10-16 Victoria Wulsin $10.00
    2008-10-16 Linda Stender $10.00
    2008-10-16 Alice Kryzan $10.00
    2008-10-16 Kay Hagan $10.00

I’ll hop over to Heidi’s again too. This election better end soon. I haven’t spent this much on campaigns in the rest of my years combined!

    I am proudly a Hillary hold-out. Can’t stop lovin’ her…

  77. Joanie, I’m sorry you’re going through that!

    Politics dividing family?

    😦

  78. Oh darn, I missed the laughs. I hope someone posts the speeches on YouTube later.

  79. Old Coastie — I don’t hate to say it — I like Ol’ Mac — he is just like my dad & grandfather (both Republican, both Navy guys). (I come from a divided family — all the men are Republican all the women Democrats — well, ex-Democrats now).

  80. I’m late to cocktail hour, can I get some champagne? It’s been a long 4 weeks but tonight we found out that my child does not have cancer (long story). I can now listen to McCain with a lighter heart.

  81. Brit: I just posted a link upthread. The audio is not great but you get to see Hillary laugh

  82. Ah, Joanie. We need to grab Jen and have a drink sometime. I’m still unemployed, but I’ll go donate plasma or something to get enough to buy a round. Haha. (Things aren’t that dire.)

  83. If you missed McCain’s hilarious speech at smith dinner, Greta just reran it. She is rerunning Obama now and I muted. Catch McCain on Greata rerun tonight.

A few days before Palin goes on SNL with Tina Fey!!!
Hillbuzz has some connections and they are pretty accurate about things a lot of the time so i would wager that is when it will get ugly too.

  123. joaniebone: I read about your family troubles awhile ago, and was so touched. I am so sorry you are going through that. Have you had conflicts with your siblings before? What is behind this irrational attachment people have to Obama? To divorce yourself from a sibling over his candidacy is just crazy. Do you have someone else you can make plans with for the holidays so you are not alone? That will help you get through it. I really feel for you.

  124. OMG, Obama says “If it wasn’t for Fox news he would be up 2-3 more points in the polls”. Reported on Greta. Guest said he thought there is a concerted effort by Obama campaign to go after Fox. Guess says Obama is probably right, if every news outlet is in the tank for Obama except 1, he is bound to be irritated by that 1. Obama is a jackass.

  125. 7 – nil Tampa! Hot damn. First good news in a long time.

Last time I’ll post this. Just realized the last one was just a part.

    Part two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrqoSyKsAPw&feature=user
    Of John only

I am finished watching the second part now.

  127. fif, that’s just it. I have always had a good relationship with all of them. One obot sib (here in Seattle) actually moved to Seattle in the first place to be near me. Another was the sis I shared a bed with throughout our childhood. We have always been confidants, and as recently as a few months back, that was certainly so.

No, this is cult behavior, and it is CULT-ivated by the Obama campaign.

  128. looking — I’m so happy to hear about the good news for you baby!

  129. Joaniebone:

    Didn’t you mean “passes out?”

  130. “CULT-ivated”, joanie? Must. Stay. Quiet. :o)

    I’m sorry. 😦

That is what I dislike most. He runs his campaign on “hope” and “change”, and yet he plants so much hate into so many hearts.

  132. MYIQ,
You name it. Surely you don’t want me to spell it ALL out, do you?

  133. myiq, you make all kinds of passes.

  134. gqmartinez,

Do you not love cheesy puns as much as I???

  135. No comment, joanie. Haha. I’m just ribbin’ ya.

  136. Joanieb: I wouldn’t talk to them at all about politics at this point. That’s what I’ve done with my family. We just agree to disagree and don’t bring it up or we fight. Hopefully in time, they will relax and realize family is certainly more important than political ideology. This Obot hypnosis is some weird mojo.

  137. The link does not work.

  138. This video is so amazing. It is about Palin’s son Trig:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2008/10/16/video-palins-special-base/

  139. Thanks FIF, there is no communication at this point. Like many of us here, we’re just hunkered down and trying to get through this homestretch. There are many, many friends that I am not speaking to at this point. there are so many stories here.

It’s getting easier and easier for me to vote McCain. It may be my most empowering vote ever. (thinking back….)

  140. Better video (Fox News) and recorded more accurately….but it doesn’t cover the entire media snark nor does it have Obambi’s speech:

  141. What does Obama have against plumbers? It’s pretty sad when a Presidential candidate openly mocks a profession, and the crowd laughs along. If that were said by any candidate that I supported, my support would have ended at that moment.

  142. hey joanie, I don’t like Obama…why don’t you talk to me anymore?

  143. I am hunkered down too. I don’t feel the need to confront, fight or advocate at this point. What will be will be, but I know without a doubt where I stand. It’s up to the fates now. I am glad there are others out there still campaigning, but I’m fried after HRC’s sidelining etc. I don’t know how they keep going. I’m too emotional and sensitive for that battlefield. That’s why Hillary is a Superhero(ine).

  144. TMendez:

Maybe Obama has a leaky pipe

  145. Hillary is so lovely. It does my heart good to see her laugh. What a wonderful spirit!

  146. I finished reading gq’s piece at Corrente. Some of those posters over there are morons!

  147. Joaniebone,

I’m so sorry about the way your siblings treated you. It is a cult, it really is. My family members are kind of tepid Obama supporters, but they have still made me feel like an outsider. I don’t know if I should go home for Christmas or not–whether he wins or loses, it won’t be pleasant.

  148. I don’t know is a real plumber.

He’s in too good of shape. He doesn’t look like the type to be flashing “trouser cleavage” to me.

  149. I don’t know if Joe is a real plumber.

He’s in too good of shape. He doesn’t look like the type to be flashing “trouser cleavage” to me.

  150. sorry for the double klutz

  151. What did Obama say, exactly? Every search for obama plumber brings up trashing of Joe with nothing about Obama’s remarks.

  152. gq-

what?????? Until I became a thread hog tonight, I haven’t talked much to anyone. Pat? Pat? back-up!

GQ, you KNOW I adore you. I thought I scared you like I do everyone else.

  153. I think Joe the Plumber is kind of cute in a Mr. Clean kind of way. Just needs the hoop in his ear.

  154. PJ:

Some people don’t let the facts get in the way of their beliefs.

  155. What’s up with the link?

  156. Joaniebone scares people?

I thought that was Captain Sapulding’s job

  157. Capt Spaulding scares me more than and evening of fun and games with Dick Cheney. Holding a double barreled rifle even.

  158. Regency – THANK YOU for the laugh!!!!!

  159. “trouser cleavage”

nuff said. It’s sad when my trouser cleavage out-shines my shirt cleavage. I thought that’s what scared GQ. But apparently he is still talking to me and coming back for more.

  160. I saw most of both John’s and BO’s speechs and I thought both were good, but I wish that McCain had done this earlier. He was terrific and I wish this kind of thing could have been done at the debates.

I know how my family is voting and let’s hope McCain /Palin wins!!!!!!!

  161. I missed McCain’s speech unfortunately. Obama’s I would have avoided at any cost.

  162. I love that!!

  163. It takes A LOT to scare me. I was mugged at gunpoint and didn’t even flinch. (OK, I couldn’t stop shaking for two hours after the ordeal, but still.)

I figured you were busy with the new job and all.

  164. GQ must share an aesthetic with sir-mix-alot.

  165. GQ: I would advise getting your shots first.

  166. {{{looking for integrity}}} – that is such great news!

{{{joaniebone}}} – I’m trying really hard to be estranged from my sibs, but for someone like you who really likes and enjoys your family, that just sucks. I honestly don’t understand why people think it’s ok to hurt the ones they love the most and over such petty little things.

angie – you still here? I’m wondering about an attorney status – “on court ordered inactive status” – what would be a possible reason for that?

  167. Pat J, I posted the links upthread. Watch Mac!

  168. “I figured you were busy with the new job and all.”

You have no idea how busy. And on that note, I actually need to extract myself from here to prepare for tomorrow. I have been coming up for air lately and would delight in getting together with you and Jen if either of you are up for it.

  169. Goodnight my beloved PUMA family. You’re all I got!

  170. what kind of logic is that?

  171. Night, Joanie.

  172. nite reg! kisses!

  173. nite joanie

  174. *smooches*

  175. Buenas noches, senorita bone.

  176. Pat-do you want me to swab my lips with anti-bacterial before puckering up?

  177. Get your shots, then take a couple too

  178. For the love of Vishnu, how can the Rays blow a 7 run lead?

  179. joanie: Just your lovely Hazmat costume.

  180. Pat, I did make a boneheaded smart-ass remark to my would be mugger as he was walking away. On hindsight, I shouldn’t have said it. I guess I got cocky because he didn’t get squat from me, not even my cell phone.

  181. Regency: Thanks for the video. McCain was hilarious and snarky. What a pleasure!

  182. “I saw most of both John’s and BO’s speechs and I thought both were good, but I wish that McCain had done this earlier. He was terrific and I wish this kind of thing could have been done at the debates.

I know how my family is voting and let’s hope McCain /Palin wins!!!!!!!”

All I can tell you at this point is I want McCain/Palin to win!!! I hope it happens. God Bless us all!!!!!!

  183. phlamingphred — sorry I was gone for a while — there are several reasons for inactive status — the attorney no longer practices in that state so gets put on inactive status so he/she doesn’t have to pay the yearly bar dues OR the attorney has not paid his/her bar dues OR the attorney has received some kind of mental/health problem that temporarily makes him/her unable to practice (but isn’t something unethical that would warrant suspension).

  184. She’s so much fun to watch.

  185. 600.00 earrings…the perfect stimulus

  186. Hillary was laughing tonight at the Alfred E. Smith dinners. Laughing at all of the McCain jokes. And the thing is, from what it seems, He and Hill are not as bad off as people want to think.

And Hillary, IMHO, just got some well deserved respect from me for allowing herself to let loose with a sense of humor. Be happy, PUMA people! Hillary’s sense of humor shall help elect McCain (in order for her to run in 4 years.)

That video left me in tears. I  Sarah Palin! She is so genuine she makes Obama and Biden look like Mr. Cardboard and Mr. Polyester.

  188. myiqis2xu,

I still think corrente is a good site, with lots of excellent Obama criticism and thoughtful postings on other subjects (especially single-payer healthcare).

But that one poster, bringiton, is neck-deep in the Kool-Aid and has gone from tolerating Obama skepticism to bleating the most tired Daily Cheeto-approved talking points on a regular basis. His/her extended argument that the KO comment about taking Hillary out is a fine example; fortunately, the rebuttals were swift and sharp.

Corrente, Cannonfire, alegre’s corner, this site: The list of refuges grows smaller every day…

  189. …er, “that the KO comment about taking Hillary out was just fine and in fact, complimentary, is a fine example…”

  190. I sent some funds to Linda Stender here in NJ but frankly her campaign has taken such a negative turn I am dismayed. And some of the information about her competitor is not true – real obot tactics.
