Walking it off

Walking the neighborhoods this summer is not without risk. You stumble across all sorts of people. Still, there is some value to it. I’ve noticed that if I walk more than 5 miles a day for a couple of weeks that I WILL lose weight.

Which for me is always a goal.

When I don’t walk regularly my weight creeps up. Mister says: Just don’t eat so much! HA! Like it’s really that easy.I know the formula as well as anyone. Eat fewer calories than you burn to lose weight.

And I’ve got a secret formula to make that easier. I don’t eat between meals and I don’t take seconds (most of the time.) Controlling when I eat goes a long way toward controlling how much I eat. But, it’s just not enough. If I don’t walk regularly my metabolism slows to a crawl and I’m not sure it’s possible to eat fewer calories than I’m burning.

Ah, But if I walk 5 miles a day . . .

Walking — especially if I take 3 moderate walks a day — has a power way beyond the calories I’m burning. Most obviously, if I’m walking then I’m not eating. So my trick (when I’m on a roll) is to walk when I’m inclined to snack. Sometimes I end up taking way more than 3 walks!

The thing is that these walks don’t have to be that long. It’s amazing how the miles stack up just walking around the block once every couple of hours.

And on this lovely Sunday in August let’s share our walking experience. Take a camera with you and send me photos of whatever strikes your fancy at katiebird@gmail.com. I’ll post them later this evening.

  1. I envy you Katiebird, the more I walk the hungrier I get. I hate to admit it, but I find when I exercise I actually eat more and gain weight instead of losing it. The only thing that worked for me was Atkins. About 5 years ago, I tried it. I lost 50 pounds and have kept all of it off except for about 10 pounds. Believe it or not, my cholesterol and blood sugar both improved dramatically on Atkins. I ate all the saturated fat I wanted to but my cholesterol and blood sugar still went way down.

I’m not as slim as Obama though. Wasn’t it Maureen Dowd or some other idiot columnist a few weeks ago who said something stupid like working class women wouldn’t vote for Obama because he’s too lanky?

  2. For people who make their professions in the field of politics Obama and the people pulling his strings are politically tone-deaf.

Hillary’s name being on the ballot should have been automatic and unquestioned.

But it wasn’t, and after all the fuss over the issue even if she is on the ballot it won’t sooth any feelings.

It’s like they’re trying to piss us off.

  3. Good morning, Katiebird,

It looks like it will be a nice day here in the Boston area too. I plan to go out soon to run some errands. Maybe I will find a nice spot for a walk too I can’t walk around my neighborhood, because I live on a very steep hill and have bad knees. I don’t have a digital camera, but I’ll report back later anyway.

  4. Interesting article about PUMA http://tinyurl.com/5z3tno

  5. WigWam, maybe you’re doing too much walking too fast? Maybe if you eased into it your appetite wouldn’t be so affected?

  6. (waving) Hi BostonBoomer, MyIQ & DownListen!

We’re leaving for our walk but I’ll be back to talk as soon as we get back.

  7. Such a beautiful picture.

Hope, Action, Change….Now, I sure know who I am not voting for this November.

  8. Katiebird, I might take your advice and give it a try. But right now I’m in my home in Ft. Lauderdale splashing on the sun tan lotion, getting ready to head to the beack for a swim. The air temperature is 83 and the surf temperature is about 88.

I will try to dig out my digital camera (if I can find it) and send some photos of lovely South Florida!

  9. I think it would be really fun to start a tradition of sharing our Sunday afternoons with pictures.

  10. Upstate, I took the photo because it actually scared me. It reminded me of the Heaven’s Gate logo.

  11. Yikes! Mister’s already outside….

  12. I love walking with my dog and will send you a couple of pictures of where we walk – except when the humidity is high and the temperature even higher. I am looking forward to Autumn weather.

  13. Walking is great! Last year, my neighbor and I started walking four times a week for one hour. Fourteen months later, we are amazed that we actually stayed with it:) We decided consistency is our friend.

  14. Morning KB! Hubby and I will have some lovely pictures for you later. We walk several times a week in Central Park. 🙂

DownListen – That was a very interesting article. Regello was definitely ahead of the curve.

In my opinion, we should now be doing everything we can possibly do to change Hillary’s mind and tell her that she needs to tell the Democratic Party to go f*ck itself. If she would stop doing the Schmoonity (Upstate, are you the one that says that?) stuff for Obama, and said, you know what, I’m done with you @ssh0les stabbing me in the back, I’m doing what I have to do and un-suspending, then we would really have something here.

I think enough time has passed for her to realize that we are for real. I feel we should be contacting her every day and telling her that she should unsuspend.

  15. Hope, Action, Change … that woudl be HAC

  16. Unable to take time off to go to Denver, but would love to see as many pumas representing us as possible???????
Send an email to : gotodenver@pumapac.org

    PUMA’S IN DENVER!!!!!!!!

  17. Good morning, everyone!

Madamab, I like your idea, and I think it really helps if a phone number for Hill’s office is posted regularly for those that log on. Scrolling back or searching is one extra step that can get people derailed from the mission.

    Anyone have the number?

  18. Scared me too … i dont like seeing his face here ( or anywhere) … truth be told … I cant stand looking at him hearing him etc etc , and i would be sorely tempted to take a can of spray paint and paint a big red zero with the slash thru it over that sign ..

  19. Friends of Hillary – Headquarters: 703.469.2008

I don’t know if RD has signed on to this mission yet, so I don’t feel comfortable adding it to the columns on the site. However, I am going to be migrating my blog to WordPress shortly, and will have something permanently there.

  20. Swanspirit. I wonder if that would be reported as a hate crime?

  21. SOD – I just wrote another letter to her today. Basically, the point was, “Now is the time for all good women to come to the aid of their country.”

Every time I think of either Obama or McCain being President, I sink into despair. I just can’t take it anymore. Four more years of Bush either way! We need to do something NOW about the environment, the economy, the situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Neither McCain nor Obama has a freaking clue! I can’t vote for either one of them.

Enough is enough. She is the one who can get us out of this mess. Now is the time, not in four years. Let us all vote for a Democrat the way we want to this year!

  22. madamab, let’s find out where Rd stands, and perhaps there can be a new post-conference action post. i am really anxious to hear the summaries and details!

I wish Hillary would leave the Demo party and head a new party of the old FDR Democrats. I was talking to katiebird yesterday, and we were talking about the idea of formulating a detailed organizational plan as a group- starting with finding the perfect american name.

this is an extention of myiq’s idea from last week.

  23. Photo changed by popular demand….

  24. Joanie, if Obama had his” brown shirt ” civilian security force ” in place I am sure it would be reported as a hate crime , instead of a political statement
..or maybe I could just paint a hitler mustache on him …would that be more to the point?? or paste a picture of Fidel Castro over his face ??? a tyrant by any other name is still a tyrant …

  25. joaniebone – I absolutely agree. Although, if she leaves the Dem party before the Convention, she cannot be nominated as a Democrat. So, there is a timing issue there.

    Here’s how I’d do it:

STEP 1: Unendorse and unsuspend. I think it’s pretty obvious who leaked her internal memos to the Atlantic Monthly. That’s the last straw.

If Step 1 happens, she will have to be given a roll call vote at the Convention AND will be placed into nomination. There is nothing whatsoever that HoDo & Co can do about it.

    STEP 2: Win the nomination.

    STEP 3: Madame President!

If none of this happens, she should go Indy AFTER the convention.

Hmmmm, the perfect American name? How about the Constitutional Party? Sworn to uphold the principles of the Constitution, and to amend it (ERA, LGBT) when necessary to continue its mission of liberty, justice, peace and prosperity for all?

  26. awww thanks Katie … I have no doubt everything ( ANYTHING 😉 ) in your neighborhood is more aesthetically pleasing … love the geese .. are they training to fly over the olympics??

  27. This is the first time I’ve seen that particular sign- large “O” with a star in the center. Just how many symbols does Obama need!? His subliminal mind tricks using the giant “O” will not work. Oprah has already successfully brainwashed me with her “O” branding.

The Obama signs in my area (Cape Cod) are the standard run of the mill bland signs. I did see a few homemade Obama signs this past week. If one is motivated to create their own sign and place it on their well manicured lawn, I assume the kool-aid is strong at their house.

  28. That was a super interesting article. The problem we face is being (spread out) private citizens against DNC corruption. There are so many corrupt and appalling practices this primary and each of the groups is trying to tackle a small slice of the problem. The other problem is that the DNC is a private organization and (if I’ve understood the FL rulings) not covered by voter fraud laws.

I think they had *hoped* we wouldn’t notice what was going on.

Oh, and since pointing to the wisdom of our dear, sweet mothers is so in vogue these days… here is something my mother DOES (not says). She likes to ask all the members of the family what they want to do and then she gets upset at the answer. We have all learned over the years that this is a trick question and we are *supposed* to choose what she wants.

The DNC is acting like my mother now since the voters didn’t choose what they wanted us to choose. The only thing left is for Howie, Nancy, and Donna to start crying big tears about how we are so difficult to please!

  30. Hillary You Must Say No To VP

    or risk political suicide

The Smart Ones Who Have Turned Down Obama

Bill Bradley says ‘no’ to Obama VP job

Ed Rendell said he does not want to be Obama’s VP

    Edwards Say No To VP

Durbin Says No to VP Position

Jim Webb says NO to being Obama’s VP

  31. As for weight…
I DROPPED weight after going off a medication…which, unfortunately, also damaged my kidneys.
Now I use a “Track3” counter to tally protein,,,it also does calories, exercise, etc! There is another version which doesn’t include the diabetes tracking, but since I got more for my money with the Track 3, I opted for that because it also has a place for medical info.

You can download the data you punch in and get all sorts of reports, too! It’s fantastic tool!! And not too expensive, either…

    Check out http://www.coheso.com….

  32. Ohio Gov. Strickland said No also

  33. Hey Katiebird, try walking for one minute really fast so you’re out of breath and a little uncomfortable and then walking at a normal pace for two or three minutes and alternate that for the duration of one of your walks during the day and get back to me. I’d be willing to bet it’ll start to change your metabolism at rest which is where you want it to be changing. Let me know how it goes. I’ll be the official Confluence In House Personal Trainer. That’s what I do for a living anyway so I might as well help keep you sweeties strong and fit for the Duel In Denver:)

  34. my suggestions, till we get a formal “mission” –

NObama lite – persuade others in our collective small circles not to vote for Prez , vote 3rd party or write-in. And vote as we like for underticket candidates. Sadly, I was informed last night that Pat Paulson died…. there goes that idea.

NOBama straight-up – contribute, vote and otherwise support McCain as the most bang for the buck against BHO. A vote for McCain directly cancels out a vote for Bambi. Boycott any Dem that supported BHO in the primaries (no $$, no vote, etc.)

I’m considering putting a McCain bumper sticker on my car, but hubby would freak. So I may choose this one – “Keep the change – NObama ’08”. Remember, bumper stickers are visible signs of protest…. and that we refuse to be silent.

  35. Awesome, SOD!!!

I am working on my new WordPress Blog now, and I will also have a permanent call to unsuspend on it, plus my Action Plan for Hillary that I outlined above.

I can’t wait to hear how RD feels about this, and what they’ve been up to in DC!

  36. madamab,

I love the Constitutional party! I’m quite serious about this. Why can’t we be our own founding mothers and fathers? We already know that we are the patriots.

Clearly, we have action to do before the convention, but after (depending on results), I hereby volunteer enormous efforts toward the formation of this new party. Madamab, sounds like you’re in. Who else?

I understand we may not have a candidate at first, but if we make a serious home for the real Democrats left, they will come.

If you build it, they will come.

  37. Katiebird I am your soul mate. Walking/hiking has so many benefits that it is like a free spa life. I live in Mammoth Lakes, Ca up in the High Sierra. I can walk downtown to get my groceries, the mail et al and I get there along a bubbling creek. The hiking trails around Mammoth are just legendary from the John Muir, America’s crown jewel, to a thousand others that meander up streams, into canyons and up magnificent Sierra peaks. I find the greatest benefit is hiking and getting some elevation gain—2 or 3 thousand feet of elevation gain starting from about 8000 ft here in Mammoth is an absolute natural high. And writing about this reminds me that I have a little lesser hike planned for today up to an alpine lake where the fish jump in the air and the water cascades down a granite slope with a huge roar. I’m off!

  38. ps to katie,

I will be walking today, but at work. After, a walk to the bluffs in Discovery Park. I don’t have a digital camera, but can describe nicely.

Thank you for inspiring us to move away from the keyboard for a bit!

  39. Looks great, SOD! Love the pic too.

Joaniebone – YES! If we build it, they will come.

I will bet you anything that a ton of Republicans and Independents will jump to that party too. Their biggest problems with Democrats are:

    1) “Wimpy”
    2) “Not Patriotic”

The Constitutional Party would be both strong and patriotic.

  40. Kitty-thx-will try that too. (in September)
It’s so hot here in Tuscany now -the only time you can walk is in the morning, and in the morning there’s lots to do (because it’s cooler) (35°C).

  41. OK dear hearts and Puma People .. I start my sunday show at Cygnus Radio at noon EST The Sunday show is Neighborhood Radio … you are more than welcome to listen in and pop on by to live chat ; we have a nice chat room with animations and stuff … and I can shout out to you on the air 🙂

My show goes from noon to three all indie all the time , and I can still cruise over here to post sometimes , just not as frequently
http://www.cygnusradio.com I have some great Puma growls as sound FX I play now LOL 🙂 see you laters hugs

  42. This is the local Franciscan church where the local choir together with some Hungarian artistes held a full costume version of ‘la Traviata’ the other evening-great fun was had by all!!!!

  43. Post Poll – Hillary Clinton
Should delegates be allowed to vote for Hillary Clinton during the Democratic Convention? (Read this related story)
    Total Votes = 1460

    Yes 79.10 %

    No 16.43 %

    Don’t know 0.479 %

    Don’t care 3.972 %

  44. Yes, Joanie – I will write you. I’ve gotta go do some stuff now, and I am still working on my WordPress version of my blog. So it will either be tonight or tomorrow. 🙂

Go, PUMAs, Go! See you all later, and I hope you all get a chance to take a walk today. 🙂

  45. Yes Charles I found this from the Kenyan Embassy in London.

    A. Kenya Constitution Section 97 (1) (6) (a) states that:

Any person who, upon the attainment of the age of twenty-one years, is a citizen of Kenya and also a citizen of another country other than Kenya shall cease to be a citizen of Kenya upon the specified date (6)(a) that is: twenty-three (23) years.

    Q. What happens to a person who is under 23 and has dual nationality?

    A. If such a person wishes to retain Kenya citizenship, he/she is advised to renounce other nationality before the age of 23 years. Failure to renounce results in automatic loss of Kenya citizenship after age 23.

  46. Charles .. while I agree with you completely….logically and rationally .. and I do not pursue those avenues because i do think there are better uses of my energies…
I have to say in my secret heart that anything that creates doubt about the man ultimately gives me pleasure (true confessions 😉 ) … and hope that those issues might lead those people to the very real monumental problems that would ensue if this man were ever to achieve office

  47. Charles I totally agree with you. One of the reasons I admire Joseph Cannon so much is his painstaking explanations debunking the Birth Certificate issue. And I’m very frustrated with Larry Johnson’s casualness about verification of sources.

It was obvious that the Kenyan Citizen point in that Rocky Mountain article was bunk. There was no attempt to support the comment.

And Larry in quoting it said it came out today — getting even that much wrong!

  48. kitty, That sounds like a great idea. I don’t like to FAST-WALK for long because I often go for pretty long walks. But, alternating it a bit could work. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  49. Joanie, I hope I didn’t miss you. I’ve been working on Emily’s photos since I got back from my walk. I’ll post a link to the gallery when I’m done.

  50. Jangles, it DOES sound like you’re my soul mate. I would love to live near you and share those walks.

  51. Bleh, let’s agree to leave Birth Certificate and Citizenship issues out of The Confluence. I don’t think it’s a PUMA issue. And I’m very certain that Riverdaughter has no interest in it.

  52. oh no…some obots think PUMAs are too fat…..oh man, now what?

I look great in a speedo (then again, I do not consider myself a “true” PUMA, probably that is why)…go figure.

  53. Hey Puma’s I need you guys to take a quick minute please and leave some comments about this video.
Will Let The Video Speak For Itself
I Know you Confluence Puma’s will love the Vid

  54. fred, I saw that video earlier today. Wife thinks some people have too much time in their hands…I agree.

  55. Armed with camera I took a couple of nice long walks up on the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday.

    Mountain Sage

  56. Charles, do you think we have a prayer to make a difference this political season?

My intuition tells me yes, but the way we are being dismissed all over the place makes me wonder….

I hope you are right and “our” efforts affect the political landscape.

  57. Some stories (like the birth certificate thing) not only distract us from important stuff but can discredit the entire movement by making us look like a paranoid band of shrieking holdouts.

I read the stories at NQ but I don’t get into some of the subjects like they do.

My theory is that spending hours speculating on the meaning of an unsourced rumor is for conservatives.

When a bonafide tape of MO saying something offensive is produced I’ll consider what the effect will be. Until it is produced it doesn’t exist.

As for citizenship, adoption and religion theories, if any actual evidence is found that proves something, let me know. If you think Obama isn’t eligible to run for President, don’t speculate about it, go find the proof. Until then, STFU (unless you’re buying the drinks, in which case go ahead and shoot your mouth off.)

  58. myiq: I guess you are right…but tinfoil hats are so fashionable….

  59. NQ is sorta like the National Enquirer of blogging.

But NE strikes gold sometimes, just ask John “I used to have a future in politics” Edwards.

  60. AP/Yahoo Headline:

    Obama Shifts Affiirmative Action rhetoric

I took the bait, and skimmed the article [I hate the lying AP now], and it’s just a tease. Basically said Obama isn’t taking a real stand, saying things that could be viewed as either keeping or eliminating AA. Surprise! It did say Obama doesn’t support the state ballot initiatives, and that he absolutely requires a massive black turnout to win in Nov and can’t afford to alienate that group.

Article did quote our lovely Dem Rep Jim Clyburn as saying our country still needs AA, and that an Obama presidential run doesn’t prove that AA is no longer needed.

Article said McCain moves in the direction of class/financial needs as more important than race and gender.

  61. Charles, I agree 100%.

Interesting timing by Putin, eh? Lame duck prez unable to make things happen in his final year…. echoes of the USS Cole? Or a prelude of things to come, like the erection of the Berlin Wall after the first JFK-Khruschev summit?

Just another reminder that we don’t need another Junior at the helm.

  62. OT, I know but

    Re: Putin/Georgia

    a) the US government voted to invade and did invade a sovereign nation (as Russia has just done) and therefore has no moral high ground, and

    b) has spent US armed forces in said war with Iraq to the breaking point

There is not much anyone in the US can say or do.

  63. Obama should have to name all his intended Cabinet picks now, so we’ll know who he plans to have running things if he wins.

He won’t be running things himself, he doesn’t know shit from shinola.

Besides, he’ll be too busy running for emperor or galactic overlord anyway

  64. I should add that JFK was smart and savvy enough to learn from his mistakes – see the Cuban Missile Crisis. But Bambi never makes mistakes. Neither does Junior Georgie.

  65. he’ll be too busy running for emperor or galactic overlord anyway

  66. bo is not just lost on the issue of Russia and Georgia he is surprise surprise talking DOWN to them i am sure that will go over well ..and work in the best interest of both countries … NOT

  67. Katiebird, thanks for changing the picture! I thought maybe you did well on the obama test yesterday and they came in the middle of the night and sprinkled koolaid dust on you while you were sleeping. Glad to see it isn’t so!

  68. Charles
Bobby JINDAL is amazing and brilliant .. and he reminds me of Bobby Kennedy !!

  69. A New Open Thread!!

  70. I guess I should start watching Jay Leno:

Jay Leno: “Of course, Obama’s supporters got him his usual birthday gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Jay Leno: “Obama’s people are trying to portray McCain as cranky, and McCain is trying to portray Obama as arrogant, you see. And when Obama was asked what he thought about being called arrogant, well, he said he was ‘above having to answer that question.'”

Jay Leno: “See Barack Obama on the news? He’s becoming a workout fanatic. He’s at the gym, like, twice a day, sometimes three times a day at the gym, yeah, according to his staff. Well, he has to stay in shape to do those flip-flops.”

Jay Leno: “Barack Obama back from his big European tour. Did you see him in Europe? People were cheering him, holding up signs, blowing him kisses. And that was just the American media covering the story.”

  71. Some problems don’t have solutions.

It’s not like we have moral standing to criticize the Russians for agression anyway.

  72. since I stopped walking I packed on the pound, in the last few weeks I have been trying to walk mopre I am walking 3-4 miles a day when I walk and am hoping to get up to 5 times a week. I may have to ramp it up a bit if katiebird is right.

  73. Our town of gainesville has about 67% tree canopy coverage even so ain aughust its up to 95F during the day .I plan to try ramping it up after the weather cools down.

I may start getting up at 5 am and walking before the sun comes up. Fuzzy has a lot of surplus santa wieght to take off but he has done it before and can do it again.

  74. Add some weight training to your regime if you are not doing
so already. Our muscle mass decreases as we age, muscle weighs
more than fat, but if you looked in the mirror and saw a well-toned
body that you liked, who cares what you weigh? (I try to get my
    doctor to understand that!)

Also, a body composition that has muscle as opposed to fat
utilizes more calories when resting (may or may not be true).

Our body composition can be mostly fat and our weight low, but
we aren’t in that great shape!

  75. please contact me @
mbdphoto@aol.com. It’s in regards to last nights conversation…thanks

  76. I’ve read all of the Judah Benjamin reports and all of the info from TechDude and it’s sounds like a whole bunch of speculation to me.

    Mountain Sage

  77. I agree with all that has been positively said about Louisiana Governor Bobby Vindal: a great speaker, stays on message, turns negatives into positives. Too bad he’s a republican. Unlike Obama, Bobby Vindal is an example of a rising star who is actually trying to gain experience for his political resume before seeking an even higher office. If Obama some how managed to win the election (and I hope that never happens) it would not surprise me to see Vindal becomes the Republican challenger to Obama in 2012.

I also think Tom Daschle wants the Chief of Staff job too.

  78. According to Pew (July 31)
“A majority of voters (56%) say the country should have a third major political party in addition to the Democrats and Republicans, while 39% say it should not. ”

  79. Fuzzy, Intervals my man intervals! If you’re not breathing hard you’re not working hard……I’m all about a third party, viva la revolution and all but we must be fit enough to keep up with these #ssh*^les:)

  80. Laurie…that’s an interesting poll. Thanks for sharing.
