Tuesday: Acorns

Confluence Park in Denver

Confluence Park in Denver

I spent last night trying to get off of Orientation Island in Second Life.  Ayayayay!  Like I need to get lost in yet another world.

There have been some murmurings on the ACORN front with respect to Barack Obama.  It’s only rumors and innuendos right now so I won’t repeat what I’ve heard.  But here is an article on the group straight from the NYTimes from a couple of weeks ago.  Here’s the lowdown:

The groups, Acorn, one of the country’s largest community organizing groups, and the Points of Light Institute, which works to encourage civic activism and volunteering, have dealt with the problems in very different ways.

Acorn chose to treat the embezzlement of nearly $1 million eight years ago as an internal matter and did not even notify its board. After Points of Light noticed financial irregularities in early June, it took less than a month for management to alert federal prosecutors, although group officials say they have no clear idea yet what the financial impact may be.

A whistle-blower forced Acorn to disclose the embezzlement, which involved the brother of the organization’s founder, Wade Rathke.

The brother, Dale Rathke, embezzled nearly $1 million from Acorn and affiliated charitable organizations in 1999 and 2000, Acorn officials said, but a small group of executives decided to keep the information from almost all of the group’s board members and not to alert law enforcement.

Dale Rathke remained on Acorn’s payroll until a month ago, when disclosure of his theft by foundations and other donors forced the organization to dismiss him.

So, the embezzlement happened 8 years ago but they are just getting around to firing the guy?  Ahh, here’s the explanation:

Wade Rathke stepped down as Acorn’s chief organizer on June 2, the same day his brother left, but he remains chief organizer for Acorn International L.L.C.

He said the decision to keep the matter secret was not made to protect his brother but because word of the embezzlement would have put a “weapon” into the hands of enemies of Acorn, a liberal group that is a frequent target of conservatives who object to its often strident advocacy on behalf of low- and moderate-income families and workers.

Oh, *I* get it.  Stealing from poor people is OK as long as the wingers don’t get hold of the information.  Well, I’m sure that Obama had nothing to do with that when he worked with them before law school. He’s a Schmoozer, not a crook.

(Blech!  {{removing neoprene gloves}}  I had to touch the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review for that link}}

In other news:

  • Heidi Li got a letter from Howard Dean about the convention and extolling its many virtues as being the most open convention ever.  Except for that whole chain link fence and Colorado National Guard sucking up all available sleeping space and the fact that Hillary’s name is being blocked from nomination.m   But other than THAT, it’s going to be the bestest. {{I do not think that word “Open” means what you think it means.}}  Um, Howard?  We’re just a bunch of overeducated suburban creative class types.  We can not hurt you.
  • Anglachel’s back!  Yeah!!!  She has another great post.  It’s like manna from heaven after wandering 40 days in the wilderness.  Precious Little describes the emptiness that is the Obama mystique and why its power is so irresistable to the weak.  Goes nicely with myiq’s post about Digby below.  Such a shame about Digby.  I thought she’d be able to hold out.  It was not to be.

  1. On the Senecca Falls action in NYC we met a very snarky woman asking us what was this about. When I said “voting rights – are you for it?” she answered “I am for all rights – I am from Acorn” “Then, you are not for voting rights” I said.
Meanwhile we find out that B0’s prayer publication was on purpose. Also, his rumored VPpicks a pro-lifer. Happy now, you bitter chicks?
You wouldn’t want McCain to overturn Roe, right?

  2. Good Morning, riverdaughter!

I’m sorry, maybe I need more coffee… But, I can’t remember how Obama is related to this group. Is this who he did Community Organizing for? Or some legal work?

  3. Oh, nevermind — I see the link. He worked for them before Law School. (off to read link before exposing myself more)

  4. RD you are a fountain of Information. Great Post.

    More PUMA’s on TV!
I found this in my inbox, it has Christi Adkins from Dems4McCain, and some music from the Obama Berlin band. The band was a Euro favorite, and sounds pretty good.

Clintons For McCain | 200,000 Is An Obama Con:

  5. From that Pittsburg link:

Through his membership on the board of the Woods Fund for Chicago and his friendship with Teresa Heinz Kerry, Obama has helped ensure that they remain funded well.

“Friendship with Teresa Heinz Kerry” ?? Really since when?

  6. Morning, RD! Excellent post.

Open convention? Sure, you can get a ticket – if you promise to campaign for Obama.

The crowd enveloping Barack Obama when he accepts the Democratic nomination for president at Invesco Field at Mile High will be asked to get to work for the privilege of witnessing the historic event live.

In a half-hour interview Wednesday with The Denver Post, Obama’s deputy campaign manager, Steve Hildebrand, said he wants to use the ticketing process as a massive recruitment tool meant to bring in supporters from all 50 states and energize them to carry the campaign into the final 60 days of the general election.

“We’re going to ask those 80,000 people in that stadium to march out of there and go with very specific instructions and goals to register millions of new voters,” Hildebrand said.

In what universe is that “open?”

    (P.S. It’s 60,000 people, not 80,000, Steve.)

  7. At first , I thought the letter about the “open” convention was an Onion piece . Also the letter’s tone, suitable for small children at a birthday party is amazingly insulting. How can I fall in line when there is a new insult everyday? Well perhaps I’m not supposed to fall in line. Perhaps the whole idea is to wreck the Dem party….it’s hard to come to another conclusion.

  8. Annetoo –

Perhaps the whole idea is to wreck the Dem party….it’s hard to come to another conclusion.

I don’t think they see it as wrecking the Democratic Party – I think they see it as fixing it. And we are the ones who are ruining the grand construction project.

As Chris Bowers said: Out with the Bubbas, up with the Creatives.

  9. Capacity: 71,125 w/o field seating.

Nonetheless “open” and “democratic convention” have almost always been oxymorons.

  10. Is there a way to protect our content? This site is pulling in entire posts apparently directly from us (through an RSS feed maybe?)

Is there some why to stop them?

  11. When I find myself agreeing with Pat Buchanan in his analysis of Obama and his campaign then I know we are in troubled waters here. Pat says on Mornin’ Joe that Obama is the least experienced candidate to hit the national scene and that this election is all about him and not McCain. The fact that he cannot move the needle higher in the polls is that people just do not know him yet.

I disagree. I think that people are beginning to see who he is, or isn’t, and they are staying away. He has been hovering anywhere from 42 to 48% for the last two months. Hillary was the spark. As long as he had her as a nemesis it made him appear victimized, as if she were holding him back. That arrogance has become more and more apparent and will not disappear anytime soon.

It is about time his associations and those he chose to surround himself with became more publicized. This is surely the pool of people he may very well surround himself with should he enter the WH. After all, he insists on shedding himself of Washington insiders and these associations are known to him. All a large part of the Chicago machine.

  12. I hadn’t seen that Chris Bowers post before. For people who blather on about “unity,” it’s incredibly divisive and alienating.

  13. plural, I think when they say “Unity” they mean “Shut the F*CK up”

  14. Chris Bowers is an idiot.

  15. F**k Chris Bowers.

  16. The Bowers piece really epitomizes the snobbery and arrogance of the Obama supporters.

I am now embracing my inner Bubba 🙂

  17. And when we say hear Unity, we say, “Shut the F*CK Up, My Ass”

  18. I thought the Democrats were for pluralism and diversity, but that is just sooooo 90s.

  19. Plural, I think “pluralism and diversity” is divisive — in this new party.

  20. madamab, on July 29th, 2008 at 9:16 am

madamab, that’s the idea….but in effect, alot of Creatives types are going out with the Bubba bathwater . Also thier idea of ” Bubbas “, Blue collar, Seniors , Latinos , Military, Repug women for Hill, on and on , are far more likely to give time and money and votes….IMO .

  21. Katiebird, I was astonished by that linked website you found. Yes, there are copyright laws that prevent anyone from quoting entire articles without the author’s permission. That’s why the owners of most blogs have very strict rules about commenters not quoting more than a couple of paragraphs from another source. We need a lawyer amongst the troops here to shut them down.

  22. Grayslady, I posted the link to blogger on This Page as a spam blog. I hope it takes…

  23. Progressive? He is considering Tim Kaine who is the oh so not! Where are the outcries from these “progressive” pundits? Kaine represents the religious view of feminism, barefoot and pregnant. Give me a break!

Sorry, but the Dems just cannot win this time. Their offerings are no better than McCain but at least we know where he is coming from. This one, all over the place.

And please, stop referring to this guy as either liberal or progressive. He is neither. He represents Obama only.

  24. Pat Johnson, on July 29th, 2008 at 9:35 am

Thank you. We tie our hands when we pretend Obama is either liberal or progressive. If he was, the MSM and its owners would not want him so badly.

    It’s actually a pretty simple formula :

MSM + wants = bad to the power of 1,000000000000000………. to infinity

  25. I think when they say “open” they are referring to the fact that Invesco field is “open air”…

  26. Re: Bowers and Bubbas – As soon as I read that essay, I realized what the Obama movement was all about. It was crystal clear that they were trying to destroy the Party in order to fix it. There was no way Obama was getting my support after that.

Personally, I would like to make a t-shirt for myself that reads thusly:

“I am a Jewish Manhattanite Opera Singer with a Master’s Degree.

    I am a Bubba.”

  27. I totally agree madamab.

  28. I am a gay bilingual educator with a master’s degree in hispanic literature.

    I am a bubba

  29. Is it racist to call the DNC “presumptious” for sending out this letter to Heidi Li and others? Sheesh.

  30. LOL Gary! 🙂

We should do a list of these “I am a bubba” self-descriptions, and make a post out of it!

  31. madamab I love it…maybe post it as a comment to his article!

  32. I’m reminded of that scene where the Romans are looking for Spartacus ….and everyone in site stands up and says ” I’m Spartacus! ”

    Indeed! I am bubba!

Also using the term” bubba” , Bowers could have only been more direct about who is out , if he used the name Clinton .

  33. I want a qualified and experienced candidate who speaks to the issues that affect me and my family. Someone who is willing to stand on principle and actually understands the plight of the average person. One who has been fighting the good fight all her life. I want Hillary and if that makes me a bubba I am more than happy to wear that label. Onward bubbas!!!

  34. madamab: I see another playlet here! The bubbas and the argula crowd.

  35. Hee hee PJ! Food for thought indeed!

  36. ” I want Hillary and if that makes me a bubba I am more than happy to wear that label. Onward bubbas!!!”

    Hear, hear!

  37. You guys are too much! I am a PUMA bubba!

  38. I also find it hypocritical of people like bowers using derrogatory terms like “bubba” and then turning around and calling us racists. I don’t think these people realize the endemic poverty and systemic bigotry that people in appalachia have been subjected to. being an elitist is just as bad as being a racist.

  39. We’ve got ACORN here in Las Cruces…no impressed so far. They hang around stores with clipboards and are pretty annoying….

    In the meantime….

A big WELCOME to kenoshaMarge, who is honoring this blog with her first contribution! KM has “known” me since the old Buzzflash days and managed to find her way here after my hasty departure from that site during the primary season. I’m so glad we’re “together again” and I hope visitors will enjoy reading her thoughts. (She’s from the “North Country” and I’m in the Southwest, so it will be interesting to perhaps see different perspectives.) She’ll be posting when she gets the inspiration to get something out there…

    AGAIN, WELCOME kenoshaMarge!!

    Her first post is called:

ENABLING BAD BEHAVIOR….she examines the parent-child relationship re: the Democratic Party!

  40. It is scary to me to watch the resculpting of the Democratic party. For what purpose would any organization want to rid itself of the backbone of the organization, in this case baby boomers with minorities. I have been involved in working for the party since McGovern. Most of the people I have seen thru the decades were alot like me.

So what is there to gain by throwing them over? I was involved in voter registration here in PA before the primary. We registered many folks who switched their registrations (in PA you can only vote your party in the primary) or were newly registered just so they could vote for Hillary. What happens to those people?

And where is Obama going to find all these other voters to take our place. People who have never cared enough to vote before. And are these brand new voters going to care anything about the down ticket? Will they be canvassing and calling and donating for the party?

What happens to these voter’s “loyalty” when Obama is not on the ticket in any future contests?

I can guess. So I ask again, what is there to gain? The party is purged, many of the activists and donors have left. And the folks who only had a one time interest in the process just to see Obama win are also gone.

I would like to think someone knows something and that there is a grand plan and everything will come out all right in the end. But I don’t think so.

I am a minor executive in an international company. While I was working my way up I would look and decisions being made by then executives and think to myself, “I don’t know why they are doing that, makes no sense to me”. But I was comforted by the fact that I was sure that in their capacity to see the big picture, they knew what they were doing. Now that I have a front row seat to those decisions, I know I was wrong.

I have the same feeling now. We will soon be a party with a head, but no body. But maybe with the arrogance of the presumed head, he won’t notice or care.

    Hillary, help!

  41. we had some obamatrons prowling our neighborhood last night…I think the fact that we still have our Hillary yard sign out keeps them at bay…its like garlic to vampires 🙂

  42. “I also find it hypocritical of people like bowers using derrogatory terms like “bubba” and then turning around and calling us racists.”

I think it’s intentional. Once they call us “bubbas,” it’s easy to call us “racists.” It’s an appeal to historic sectional prejudices.

  43. Hubby and I are owners of a small engineering business.

    We are bubbas.

  44. “Also the letter’s tone, suitable for small children at a birthday party is amazingly insulting. ”

I reminds me of the contest my daughter wanted to enter to try to win tickets and backstage passes to see the Jonas Brothers. Of course she’s 13, and the Jonas Brothers aren’t running for Commander in Chief. Apparently our democracy is now packaged for your entertainment.

You might be a bubba if… you are more interesting in voting for substance over style.

You might be a bubba if… you are a member of the “creative class” but don’t constantly pat yourself on the back about it and sneer condescending at others.

You might be a bubba if… you think “open” in the context of the convention means more than just the openh-air venue in which the coronation will take place.

You might be a bubba if… you detest the taste of Cool-Aide.

  45. plural, but if you look at who benefitted most from institutional racism, it was the southern elite. the poor whites really didn’t get anything out of it, and in places like appalachia where the AA population is less than 1%, it really doesn’t even apply all that much. By pitting the poor against the poor, it has always been the “creatives” who have come out ahead.

  46. Bubbas! It speaks for me!

And who would have thought that the GOP would be entertaining the idea of a pro-choice VPcandidate to woo women, while the Dems are considering a pro-life VP to woo evangelicals.

I truly have fallen thru the looking glass.

  47. gary, I agree completely.

But Northern prejudice is easily evoked by accusations about “bubbas” and such, without distinctions among classes.

  48. I don’t know if anyone noticed, but MSNBC last night had a headline “Alzheimer’s more prominent in men” directly over a picture of John McCain, then below that a story about him having a mole removed. Don’t tell me that was not on purpose….then they had another article below that from some pipsqueak from newsweek named andrew Romano (who has a BA in English from Princeton…OOOOHHH) trying to explain away McCain’s lead in the poll. here’s how he starts the article:

Is John McCain–gasp!–beating Barack Obama in the race for the White House?

According to the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, the answer is yes. (No word yet on what the survey says about the existence of Santa Claus. [Insert rimshot here.])

Really who do these people think they are? this is some rich ass 20 something with a bullshit degree (sorry english majors, Mine is hispanic literature, so i’m in that same boat) and he’s an associate editor at newsweek?????? give me a break. link here, if you think you can stomach it:

  49. Gary – I know! They have been flagging the “McCain is old! OMG!” angle for months now.

As for the polls, I’m writing a post about them (and the corporate media apologists who are pretending they don’t exist) e’en as we speak (er, type). 🙂

(You’re all making me laugh, by the way. 🙂 )

  50. The word “bubba” is actually derogatory in what it represents. People who look and sound like Larry the Cable Guy. They awarded that title to Bill Clinton simply because he came from Arkansas and it was not meant to be a compliment.

This is how they view us. Stupid, whiny, bellies crawling over the low hung jeans, tobacco chewing, big hair babes, provincial, rac**ts, and out of the mainstream. Who would want to associate with people fitting that description? Not them. They probably feel as if they are doing the party a favor by excising us altogether.

  51. new york times has an apologist article for Obama on why he didn’t visit the troops..here’s a sample:

The McCain television commercial, which asserts that Mr. Obama chose to go to the gymnasium over visiting troops, is not entirely accurate. Instead of going to Landstuhl on Friday morning, Mr. Obama also conducted an interview with CNN in his hotel in Berlin.

OK, so McCain is a liar, because you know talking to his CNN fluffers is so much more important than seeing the troops. notice that they don’t deny he went to the gym, just that he talked to CNN too, so there!!!

and the bottom line on why he didn’t go after the pentagon debunked his claim that they wouldn’t let him?

“Even him going alone would likely be characterized by some as a political event,” Mr. Gibbs said in an interview on Monday, adding, “He decided not to put the troops in that position.”

yeah, that would have really hurt their feelings. Its not like they just got injured defending our country or something…heaven forbid they might be put in the horrible position of making Obama look bad…sheesh…these people are brain dead.

    link here:

  52. He could have done any number of things but then it may not have been captured on film. You know, Obama Expresses Compassion. Had this been any other candidate, the press would have savaged him. You can go all the way to Berlin and make some empty rhetorical speech but fail to visit the very same people whose future endeavors may rest in your decisions? Unbelievable!

Obama could be caught doing a two step with Larry Craig while wearing a Carmen Miranda chapeau and the press would be slobbering over his Brazilian tribute.

  53. @ Katiebird, I think you may have stumbed onto something SFUMA. Used only when needed.

Also, I think there are strong ties between the Obamas and the Kerrys. I’ll try to find a link but John and Theresa were behind Barack way back when.

OT, just got an email from HRC’s campaign. Make a donation and get a chance to have dinner w/ HRC.

“Summer is a time for simple pleasures: family vacations, baseball games, and dinner out under the stars. At least it is if you aren’t running for president!

It sure is nice having a little more time on my hands, and I’d love to spend some of it with you. Would you like to join me for dinner?”

I don’t know. I guess I’m still in guerilla mode but I found this a little offputting. I really don’t want to have dinner under the stars with HRC (not that I’d win anyway!) when I really want her name on the ballot.

Can we find out if HRC has or will ask the DNC for her name on the ballot and a vote on the floor? Dean & Co. are playing semantics in stating that She has to ask for her name on the ballot.

  54. Elixir: I guess I would have to question the purpose of the dinner. What does she gain from it?

  55. KB: “Friendship with Teresa Heinz Kerry” ?? Really since when?

It’s all so incestuous, isn’t it?

  56. They are stupid too if they think Kaine will do anyting for Obama, especially take Virginia. I lived in VA at the time. Kaine beat Jerry Kilgore who was the most repressive, right wing, christianist candidate EVER!!! He had some scandals brewing that were being reported on in every paper across the state, and Kaine was riding the Coattails of Mark Warner who had been one of the most popular governors of the past two decades. And Kaine still only got 52% of the vote, beating kilgore by less than 100,000 votes. Obama is a negative for Kaine supporters…I think it will not do anything to win VA for them.

  57. Who are all the bubbas going to vote for?

  58. They wanted to create a “star candidate”. So instead of going to Build a Bear they chose this one to fashion a campaign around. Personally, I think they should have gone to Build a Bear.

  59. if you look at that election, repubs won every other statewide contest that year as well…Kaine only made it because of his right wing tendencies and warner’s popularity.

  60. I guess the idea is to get only the cool people to vote.

  61. Hillary is trying to raise money to pay off her debt.

  62. Problem is, bubbas’ are smart. They also mistrust the media at this point.

  63. Darnation. That should be bubbas are smart.

Mis-use of apostrophes is one of my pet peeves.

  64. Rasmussen:

    BO 44
    McCain 42

    with leaners:

    BO 47
    McCain 46

No Bounce after spending how many bazillions of dollars! Kind of reminds you of the pre-convention period doesn’t it.

  65. “It sure is nice having a little more time on my hands, and I’d love to spend some of it with you. Would you like to join me for dinner?”

Argh! It’s spreading. Is this really what the modern poltical process has become? Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have a chance to meet Hillary Clinton up close and personal, but these kinds of appeals feel so…cheesy?

  66. I was under the impression that her debt was paid off. Did I misinterpret this?

  67. garychapelhill, on July 29th, 2008 at 10:28 am Said:

Kaine also rode in on the coattails of Warner. He also seems to have a lapdog kind of quality — no wonder Obama likes him.

  68. PJ, the opensecrets total was all she’s raised, including funds for the GE that can’t be directed to the primary.

    So it was misleading.

  69. I don’t mind donating to Hillary to pay off the debt. But I was under the impression, and I could be wrong, that the debt was paid off with a surplus to boot. Somebody please clarify this for me as I do not intend to keep sending donations for a cause that is no longer clear.

  70. I think I am getting pretty confused about this. I thought it came from Will Bower that the debt was clear and there was a surplus.

  71. I’m not familiar with NCEC,

After you get past the first bit about “now that Obama is the nominee” there is some interesting reading here. They are calling the 2008 election just as close as the last two. (Unless I’m misreading the text.)

There are some graphs for people who enjoy this sort of thing.

My question is “What happened to the Democratic Landside?”

  72. picking Kaine is also strangely similar to Kerry’s pick of Edwards. they never learn….Edwards did nothing to help kerry take NC, and Kaine will not help obama take va. stupid democrats…. I read somewhere that the only person who nets Obama votes is Hillary, and they are voters he should have sewn up already anyway…he’s so screwed…

  73. Hi Carol, my lifecoach, my inspiration.

Hello? Those numbers suck! In fact, I bet the numbers are actually worse than that because they over sampled Obama voters.

  74. I think I am getting pretty confused about this. I thought it came from Will Bower that the debt was clear and there was a surplus.

Yeah, I’m confused about this too. I had heard that Will Bowers was wrong. Also, a few days ago the troll meme “I know you feel bad about Hillary’s debt” came along. No that anything a troll says impresses me.

  75. @Arabella, The democratic landslide is coming down on top of them, just not in the fashion that they had envisioned.

  76. katieb – that other place is alarming. When I opened the link a message on the right of the screen said I had just arrived from The Confluence and it gave my city and state.

  77. Morning, all! Great posts.

    Nice post back there, MaryLee.

    For the record:

I am a mixed-race immigrant American citizen academic/artist with PhD, and with organic mangoes ripening on my counter.

    I am a Bubba.

  78. All Hillary’s delegates should see this before the convention

History Repeats itself HRC vs. FDR

  79. I think the debt thing is unknown…I heard all of the accounts in the media were leaks from O’s camp. The numbers for July will not be out until late Aug, and we began fundraising in earnest around July 4. So we won’t know for a while how we did. I notice that many of us have not received our shirts yet. My guess is that they were overwhelmed with donations and had to backorder tons more. that can only be good news!

  80. magdalena…OOOOHHHMangoes!!!!

  81. They said to allow 4 weeks to delivery. I did however receive my PUMA bracelet yesterday.

  82. A mango martini! UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!

  83. gary: When is Mawm’s audtion?

  84. Is Mawm doing his Jeopardy thing yet?

    Go Mawm!

  85. PJ- Oh goodie. I want my PUMA bracelet, too. I just checked intrade and Kaine and Bayh are neck and neck. I think I am hoping for Kaine. It will make all those feminists that have been lecturing us explode.

  86. well, I’m entering the dinner with hillary contest. I liked this sentence from the rules for entry:

Contest limited to legal residents of the U.S. who are at least 18 years of age and who support Hillary Clinton.

  87. Honora–not this Bubba Feminist, though. I won’t explode. But I share your desire.

  88. Magdalena – All those things are fine, but if you eat arugula and bowl in a shirt and tie, you are right out.

  89. Kaine will not make me change my mind about Obama.

If they choose him, I think they would be trying to get the Roman Catholic and Latino vote, along with Virginia.

  90. Never thought this would happen. This election is very revealing. I always thought I was, if not creative class, professional, white collar class. Well, bless my soul, I find I am a Bubba( in the good sense of the word). Coulda knocked me over with a feather….But if a belief in the FDR type administration that HRC will give us is a Bubba well, yahoo! (picture me twirling cowboy hat I don’t have) PUMA in western PA

  91. Carol, if you’re around, for the total…I want to have dinner with Hillary!

    Amount: $10.00

  92. Beware the glassy-eyed stares of the Children of the Corn:

    Camp Obama!

    Obama Youth!

  93. As a lifelong Dem who instilled those values into my 4 kids for so many years, I do not want to see Obama anywhere near the WH. I hope I do not have to cast my vote for McCain, that will depend upon how close they are in my state, but the defeat of Obama and the DNC needs to happen to ensure some semblance of parity. Otherwise I shudder to think of the possibilities attached to his win.

  94. pat and magdalena…his audition is at 11:30!! its in DC, he left here at 4am this morning…I just talked to him about an hour ago, and he’s there…everyone send good thoughts his way!!!!!

  95. The notion that a pro-life guy will help get the Catholic vote is not supported by the evidence. Catholic voters are no more or less pro-life than other main stream Christian voters. It is just the priests that are pro-life. Remember how much good pro-life Casey was at getting the Catholic vote for Obama in Penn.?

  96. Thanks for the warning, madamab!

Are you going to a protest today?

BTW, does eating mangoes make me a r*cist?

  97. Caroline Kennedy for VP? Why not Hannah Montana? Let’s go straight for the celeb factor and leap right over experience. But I suppose if you factor in that she spent 3 yrs in the WH from the ages of 3-6, that could possibly stack up in experience. After all, he is being touted for his international creds just by having lived in Indonesia for a few years until he was 10. And Hannah would be a solid plus for all those Obama Kids they are putting together. Am reaching out for a “pen pal” as we speak.

As a parent, there is noting more I would welcome than one of my kids having an “Uncle Joe” to correspond with since they will share so much in common. Idiots!!!

  98. Fingers crossed for Mawm!!!

  99. LOL Magdalena! Probably.

I am going to a PUMA event tonight. I will take pictures.

As for Kaine as Obama’s VP – that is a horrible choice. Virginia is about to turn blue with ex-gov Mark Warner a shoo-in for Senator in 2008. They need all the Dems they can get in that state.

In fact, red-state Dem Governors or Senators should be off the table for Obama’s Veep. But then again, IAAO (It’s All About Obama), so I guess he doesn’t care about swinging the balance from Dem to Rep.

Gary – thinking good thoughts about Mawm! That is so exciting!!!!

  100. Good luck to Mawm!

  101. madamab: I envy you! Have a great time anyway.

  102. Thanks PJ! I will imagine you are there with me, looking all Cindy Crawford-esque, brandishing your Nancy Pelosi pashmina, and cuddling your life-sized blow-up doll of Eddy.

  103. madamab, interesting point. The lieutenant governor of Virginia is a Republican.

  104. madamab…virginia has term limits for governor–only 1 term (they can run again, just can’t have 2 consecutive terms). Although I guess they would have to have a special election to fill the seat (unless the lt. gov takes his place, and he’s a republican…don’t know the rules) and it probably would go to macaca or gilmore…they only have about 4 politicians in VA at any given time 🙂

  105. Mawm doesn’t need any stinking luck, he is a PUMA!!!!

  106. What am I missing? What is Mawn auditioning for?

  107. Obama Sides with Islamists in Choudhury Case
Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee has touted himself as a friend to the oppressed, as a politician who stands up for justice and human rights.

This is a cornerstone of his campaign to the American people. It’s easy enough, however, to define oneself in whatever way one wants; especially when no one in the media challenges you on it.

The real test of moral courage is how one acts—not just talks—in real-life situations. And in the one concrete instance when the Illinois senator was called upon to stand up for justice, he was nowhere to be seen.

  108. Honora,

MAWM is a PUMA, a software engineer, an accomplished artist, my best friend, and

    a bubba…

  109. masslib, he’s auditioning for Jeopardy! in DC this morning

  110. I know I’m a bubba cause I’m old, white, poor and not about to be bamboozled by some slick-talking empty suit.

I guess I’m a rac*st too because I think having your own faux presidential seal before you’re even been anointed, ah nominated at the Democratic convention and sashaying around Europe like the President-elect is presumptuous.

Dang, pretty soon we won’t even be able to mention the size of the “One’s” ears cause everyone knows that mentioning that someone has big ears is rac*st.

This crap keeps up we’ll end up with a 3 page dictionary of socially acceptable words to use in discussing the “One” . All of them adoring, of course.

  111. I heard that Hannah Montana is supporting McCain.

Good Morning Arabella! I hope you are doing great.

Good Morning Pat – you already have all of us as PenPals! (Eddy say hi!)

Good Job gary – I will be at that dinner with you.

Someone needs to put up the challenge!

  112. Mawm is auditioning right now! Go Mawm!

    Answer: “Present.”

Contestant One: “What is a gift?”
Contestant Two: “What is a tense?”

Mawm: “What has traditionally been Senator Obama’s vote on any issue that might require him to grow a decidedly Democratic spine?”

    Trebek: “More specific, please.”

Mawm: “ABecause his entire Democratic skeletal structure in missing as well as the neocortex?”

    Trebek: “More specific.”

Mawm: “Which makes him a plush-puppet?”

    Trebek: “Correct!

  113. Gary – The Return of Macaca!

BTW – someone has put up a new post.

  114. Magdalena – LOL!

    Mawm is a shoo-in!

  115. Carol – right now I’m hot and bored.

I have volunteer projects this week and next week, and then after that I want to start working again.

At least I’m not depressed any more.

  116. I am issuing an Amber Alert for Ed!

  117. I am an ignorant (only some college … gasp!), immigrant, atheist, non-gun owning Pennsylvanian, stay-at-home mama-bubba to three kids currently covered in Moon Sand. With Play Doh hardening on the counter.

Quick, stuff me into my pigeonhole!

  118. kenoshaMarge: Great post today!

  119. I am proud to annouce that I am a bubba
I am a retired railroader and was called back as a consultant for a commuter railroad.
I have been lucky enough to work with people from all over this country.
I was also lucky enought to travel thru this country and see how beautiful and dIversified the country and her people are.
We are so lucky to live here in America and we deserve so much better than backtrack barak.

  120. britgirls: You are eating too many of those lollipops!!!!

  121. magdalena….LOL I’ll have to point that out to him…he keeps saying that he has to control himself …you know when they tell their little story at the beginning, he will go on some diatribe about how awful Obama is….

  122. It is what makes Mawm, Mawm. His passion is infectious!

  123. Annetoo: “Perhaps the whole idea is to wreck the Dem party….it’s hard to come to another conclusion.”

Maybe Annetoo is onto something. According to this article “The Donna Brazille-Karl Rove Connection” , Donna resolved back in 2003 that in order to save the Democratic Party she might have to destroy it first. Who better to help her than her new BFF Karl Rove, the Architect.

(Article appeared at No Quarter on the 27th; http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/07/27/the-donna-brazile-karl-rove-connection/ )

Sorry – don’t know how to do links nor quotes (sigh)

  124. Can anyone think of two more evil people on the planet than Rove and Donna B together? Talk about “strange bedfellows”.

For Donna to admire the nastiness of Rove tells us all we need to know about her motivations. She wants to emulate his success by any means. She needs to be stopped cold with a huge loss in November. I am riding that unity pony.

  125. Good thoughts for Mawm on jeopardy.
I read your post kenosha Marge. You made very good points.
Arabella my prayers are with you to find a good ,rewarding and interesting, well paying job.
The people on this site are so much fun and so smart about so many things.
    You make my day.

  126. Magdalena – hysterical.

Pat – Eddy says he a little too old for the Amber Alert!

  127. I have a call out now to Dawg, the Bounty Hunter!!

  128. Endorsements from NARAL and Planned Parenthood, PLUS!! Tim Kaine as VP. Wow, our Barky really is a uniter!

  129. Ann On: Talk about parallel universe! How does one reconcile these two opposites? Oh you don’t, it is all for Obama.

  130. Pat Johnson says:

I have a call out now to Dawg, the Bounty Hunter!!

Thank you Pat. You give me at least one laugh a day when it seems like I really need it most.

And thank you for your kind words about my post at Insightahalytical. I thank Grl for giving me the chance to express myself.

  131. The NQ posting of the CityEdition article on Brazile/Rove is just sickening. It highlights just how crucial her lies on CNN were, and how CNN knew she was an Obama supporter, but went along with the charade. Brazile is one big reason I’ll never support Obama, no matter what. She’s already gleefully thrown us out of Her Democratic Party, but she’ll use us as “Democrats” if she needs us to help him win.

Brazile doesn’t think the Big Tent Democratic Party is big enough for her AND the Clintons/Clinton supporters. I’m beginning to think she’s right, it’s just a question of who will be out on the outs in December.

  132. I am a widowed, middleage, southern white RN with a Bachelor’s degree. Truly I am a Bubba, y’all.
