Kamala Harris and Joe Biden each have terrible records. There is no reason to believe they will do much that is good, and every reason to believe they will do much that is bad. Trump will, at least for Americans, probably be even worse. (It is less clear he will be better for foreigners.) The […]

Nomination C.O.P.: Lemmings on the Brink

The lemmings are poised on the edge of the cliff, driven by migratory instincts they cannot fathom but only obey. Each wave of new arrivals presses against the backs of the lead lemmings until in ones and twos and then clusters they spill over the brink into the surf below.

They’re game little swimmers — most of them good for 200 yards or more in calm waters — but crossing choppy seas they will drown in quantities no longer measured by numbers, but in tons. (Did you know lemming populations peak and crash to near-extinction levels in four-year cycles?)

Superdelegate, hear my cry. You DON’T have to do this. You DON’T have to play follow-the-loser. Even if all your friends jump off a cliff, you DON’T have to follow.

Barack Obama is as unprepared to be President as he is to debate any legitimate contender. He promises everything until it comes to particulars, when he promises only disappointment. He remains untested against adversity, and unvetted against determined oppo artistry. He’s been bleeding popular support since February. He finished second in delegates and popular votes except in caucus states — and the parallel primaries in TX, WA, NE and ID will tell you what those wins are worth, as will tonight’s primary results in SD and MT (adjoining six caucus states).

You DON’T have to do this, but if you DO sign on tonight, remember: as a vulnerable target of high-pressure sales tactics, you are still entitled to a Nomination Cooling Off Period.

  1. You are good, ronk. heh.

  2. C.O.P. = Republicans vultures will pick his bones.

Meanwhile, us happy PUMAs will be up high on the mountain peaks of justice and democracy.

  3. Good post – I am completely amazed at the lemmings heading for the cliff!

Remember, the warranty period is 90 days with most purchases.

Isn’t it about 90 days until the convention?

  4. So I guess I’m just down to one blog now. I had been mostly hanging out at TalkLeft. I love Jeralyn to death and respect her too much to post there much more in this mood I’m in. The Obama supporters are swarming with their “impassioned” olive branches and all I want to do is send them a virtual kick in the ass. I’d probably end up getting kicked off as a site violator. How embarassing that would be. Yikes.

So anyway, here I am. Let’s be kind to each other.

  5. Maria: BTD takes it too far for me and I doubt he’s even aware of it. Everything comes off as dismissive of Clinton completely when there has never been a closer race in political history and one candidate is clearly unelectable so it’s futile to try and fix what can’t be fixed. And today he had a post about history that should have read, “Making history by denying history.”

He says he’s against misogyny, but then he votes for Obama because he’s “loved” by the (misogynistic) media.

Also, check out Corrente. Lambert has already said: “’till the last dog dies.”

  6. Marcia Garcia — I left after that sweetie felt the need to post a multi-paragraph bunch of BS in consecutive threads.

  7. Sorry, Maria

  8. Davidson: ’till the last dog dies.”

Hide your pets. BO supporters are likely to take this literally.

  9. I will remain indignant …I have a long memory and I will never forget how this has gone down. Saw one interesting post and I remembered as well Donna Brazile threatening that if SuperDelegates chose the nominee that she would leave the DNC…hmmmm …..well Ms. Brazile…we’re waiting.

  10. I don’t have many outlet left to check what is going on currently in SD and MT. My stomach has become waaaaaaaaaaay to sensitive.

Anybody here has the latest from those 2 states? Not that it matters.

When is HRC scheduled to speak?

  11. She hasn’t dropped out, has she? I’m afraid to turn on the TV…

  12. Oh well, I found an Inspector Lynley Mystery on PBS. Hopefully that will keep me occupied before Donna Brazile runs Wolf Blitzer down to announce that she is endorsing Obama so that she can be the one to take him “over the top.” Barf.

  13. Oh, and for the record, I knew you were talking about OFB people at TL, but I still don’t like BTD’s “Unity now!” posts.

@hlr: Ha! Actually, I wouldn’t put it past them.

  14. Katiebird, I’ve got Fox on (against my better judgment, but I don’t want to miss her speech.) So far, nothing. I’ll let you know when she starts.

  15. jules, so let her us know when her speech starts and I’ll turn to Fox.

  16. Has anyone put out a complete list of Obama’s superdelegates? Has he actually got endorsements in hand. Earlier today, it was projections.

  17. Thanks, Jules.

    I feel like throwing up.

  18. I guess this will be my new home once Jeralyn starts her support the nominee campaign. I’m a PUMA and I don’t feel like unifying with boorish bullies.

  19. @CWaltz: She has vowed not to do that until Clinton concedes or August.

  20. Maria:

Like you I have been hanging out mostly at TalkLeft . A few minutes ago, I wrote a comment that was civil in saying that I respect the TalkLeft position of ‘support the nominee’ but that I would have to go elsewhere, thanking Jeralyn for the time leading up to tonight.

She didn’t allow the comment to be posted.

So to RonK’s point, it is more than superdelegates that are acting like lemmings.

  21. Will do. I have a pit in my stomach. Bob Beckel was just on but his demeanor was quite different from the NQ video regarding the infamous video.

  22. I don’t think the polls have even closed yet.

  23. Jules, what do you mean? Was it stout denial?

  24. SD and MT have been now rendered irrelevant.

  25. jules,

I was listening for a minute. It sounded like Beckel was saying that Obama is making a huge mistake by doing his victory dance tonight. Did I hear right?

  26. have now been= have been now

  27. Beckel did not mention the tape at all. I have to admit I’m not listening to those a**es very carefully. Bostonboomer, I thought Beckel was talking about Hillary and this rumor that she has said she is OK with being VP.

  28. Davidson: Jeralyn seems like a good egg. I’ll probably visit from time to time because I love the way she and BTD have conducted themselves. I, sadly, expect that Clinton will not be the nominee and it is probably a matter of days rather than months before it turns to lauding Obama. I wish I could say different.

  29. Coldblue–Your comment may not have been censored. The site is down right now. Anyway, I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who felt “de trop” over there today, in spite of what Jeralyn has said. I post over there as Chancellor, BTW.

  30. Actually, Fox, is being pretty respectful of Hillary. (I will
turn Fox off when Dick Morris comes on to bash her.) Fox’s main focus includes (1) the historical impact of the nomination of an African American (I thought Barack’s father was classified as an Arab in Kenya so I wonder if the Repubs will come out with that data); and (2) Hillary wanting the VP post, which I think is a stretch of a comment she made earlier today.

I cannot tolerate Donna Brazile, so I am not watching CNN. She is one of the four horseman of the apocalypse of the Democratic Party.

    They have McCain on now.

  31. That’s it. I’m staying away from TL, too. The OFB are killing me! I just finished screaming at my monitor.

Does someone know if Clinton actually said she would take VP?

  32. Katiebird, is there an open thread we should move to?

  33. Davidson: Jeralyn (who I like very much) said that she’d vote for Obama if the delegates in Michigan weren’t stolen (meaning the 69-59 split). She rescinded that one apparently, since the delegates were definitely split along that line. I think she’ll feel pressure to fall in line and will do it. She has her TV appearances to think about too.

  34. Davidson: Does someone know if Clinton actually said she would take VP?

CNN has an article on its front page saying she brought it up.

  35. Is TalkLeft going to shill for Obama? I don’t expect withering criticism but I don’t want them to turn into Dkos and TPM. Its one of my favorite sites.

  36. McCain in his current speach: “Pundits and party elders have told me that Senator Obama will be my opponent”

  37. Don’t feel bad and don’t give up. The spotlight will really be on Obama now. He won’t like it.

Plus it is far from over. Hillary will prevail.

    This too shall pass.

  38. Davidson: Clinton had to put out yet another presser that in response to the question from lawmakers about taking the VP spot, that she’d do anything to beat McCain. So the story became that she was essentially begging for the VP spot. That’s not true. She just said what she’s been saying all along. The story was put out to suppress her voters.

    Here’s a link:

  39. WS: Is TalkLeft going to shill for Obama?

  40. Coldblue, they don’t usually censor comments until after they are posted there so I think it might have been a site glitch. But yeah I agree she and BTD are great. But I have already gotten into some nasty (for my taste) tussles with OBots on that site. When it becomes an Obama site, I’m sure those former trolls will probably be reporting me as a site violator. Anyway, such is life.

  41. Hey McCain is sucking up to us. I like it!

  42. Unless I am mistaken, regardless of how many delegates he currently has, Obama is not “the nominee”.

There will be no Democratic nominee until August.

He is the “presumed” nominee, just as McCain is the presumed nominee, which to me is like saying he might be the nominee if all goes well.

He hasn’t won a damn thing yet! The brass-ring only comes after the first convention ballot, doe it not?

A hell of alot can happen between now and August! I predict it will.

HRC may still be the prize winner!

  43. Lord, I hate post without preview, I leave words out. Lemme try again.

Davidson: Clinton had to put out yet another presser today, saying that in response to the question from lawmakers about taking the VP spot, that she’d do anything to beat McCain.

I think the rest of what I previously said is okay.

  44. I think the problem with TalkLeft won’t be Jeralyn or BTD. I think it will be that the OBots will feel entitled to take the site over and thus drive the rest of us out.

  45. What I mean is, is Talk Left going to go with the Obama can do no wrong like the Obama blogs. I like clear eyed analysis that they’ve been doing or are they just going to sweep his weaknesses under the rug.

  46. WS — Well, BTD said he will “go to the mat” for BO, so I’ll stick with my ‘yes.’

  47. Teresa: Thank you. God, I’m hoping she keeps herself viable by just suspending. Obama/Clinton would still be defeated and she’d be blamed for it.
Maria: I fear you’re right about the incoming OFB swarm. I usually just read for the comments actually since the posts were all the same.

  48. Who knows WS. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  49. The Dem sites will all shill for Obama. Whatever choice do they have? All dissent will be scrubbed. It will be Obama 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with only those promoting his wonderfulness allowed to post.

How does a Dem site turn on its own? It cannot. I would be very surprised to see anything different. This is where he will get away with all the free press. The MSM will be close behind since he was the one they chose from the beginning. And if anyone dare to make a criticism or ask a question, there will be enough Obama surrogates on hand to challenge the speaker and label the non believers as racist. This is what we are in for.

The “friendly” blogs have been sending out signals for a few weeks now of the party “unity” claptrap and their will be fewer who will tolerate any negativity.

They have made their decision and they won’t change it unless there is a huge mistake made on Obama’s end. He is “the One” for all intents and purposes. We have been rooked.

  50. McCain is going at Obama pretty good: Americans “are just getting to know Senator Obama.”

  51. I can’t believe I waited 7 1/2 years to watch the Democratic party rig the nomination for a sure loser.

  52. Just like the drumbeat for Hillary to drop out has been since February, the drumbeat for Hillary as VP is now all over the place.

Am I the only one who thinks it would be a no-good, terrible, horrible idea? Obama’s gang and their allies in the media hate Hillary Clinton. A VP only has the power granted to him/her by the President.

Hillary would be treated the way Kennedy and his clan treated LBJ.

The Obama gang, encouraged by the media will go out of their way to humiliate her soundly.

I rather have her in the Senate where she could become a powerhouse and push some progressive policies.

Btw, didn’t MoDo write that Obama was thinking about the best way to humiliate Hillary?

  53. grayslady & Maria;

Maybe, but I caught a comment earlier today from Jeralyn (yes, I was slacking at work!) that confirmed my suspicion.

It was a nice place while it lasted. Time to move on to…The Confluence.

  54. I think this place is going to grow with refugees from Taylor Marsh and Talk Left. We should make changes here like diaries and preview comment.

  55. WS

We need to donate to this site too.

  56. I think she wants to be asked for VP and then turn it down. She definitely shouldn’t do it because the Obama people will blame the Clintons for anything that goes wrong in the campaign.

  57. MABlue: no-good, terrible, horrible idea

Of course it is. For all the reasons you listed, and more.

  58. RD should put up a donations link then for needed changes unless she likes it the way it is.

  59. New thread: cocktail hour

  60. WS: She should turn it down. Trust me on this.

  61. Maria, and other TL refugees, I’m in the same boat. I have great respect for Jeralyn and BTD (though I don’t always agree with him), but the pile on in the threads have become too much. I also could do without the Unity Now bull. Is it just me or does the accept the VP slot for unity now cries feel like a pat on the head. Be a good little girl and go sit in your corner.

    I’m quite emotional today. 🙂

In Jeralyn and other Clinton bloggers (Taylor Marsh comes to mind) defense, they see themselves as Democrats first, and I respect that this is their view. I believe Taylor and Jeralyn will fight for the Democratic party, come the fall, but that is not the same as shilling for Obama.

  62. I’m thinking that the GOP might enjoy love tearing Obama down before the convention.

The hardcore members of Obamanation will never give up, a bloody floor fight will hurt whoever wins the nomination, and it will be a black eye for the whole party, not just Obama.

It’s gonna be a long summer.

  63. WS: I am certainly open to suggestions about how to change the site. Not really into a pay model though. But I should consult the others first.

  64. Obama’s having his ass trounced by McCain. He got the magic number as it stands. Bombs away their Bambi.

  65. McCain speech is very good. He says Obambi does not understand economy and is arguing that O wants to raise taxes on Seniors and a multitude of others to make government bigger.

  66. Definitely, definitely definitely no VP. No good reason to do it. It will be a job of rescuing him and taking the blame for his disasters. no no no!

  67. I cannot in good conscience support Barack Obama. I can’t even hold my lunch nose and vote for him.

  68. cloudy03

I don’t expect TL to shill for Obama, but the handcuffs on dissenting commentary leave much to be desired for expressing one’s opinion.

  69. If Hillary wants something in exchange for endorsing Obama it should be Senate Majority Leader.

    More authority and higher profile.

  70. SD too close to call right now!, Clinton ahead

  71. McCain says Obama has the most liberal voting record in Congress.

  72. This is what is left of our choices: McCain or Obama. What a friggin’ nightmare.

  73. Yes, myiq2xu. That would be far better.

  74. I watched Taylor’s appearance on MSNBC. I was really disappointed that she seemed to back off the strong language she used to describe the RBC decision.

  75. I hear you Coldblue Steele.

I’ve had to bite back more than one angry retort today. The Unity Now droning is patronizing. How could the Democratic Party be so blind and stupid?

  76. cloudy03:

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is a Democratric tradition.

  77. RD, here is a suggestion. We are all politcal junkies here I would believe. We are all Clinton supporters. If you look at Clinton’s constiuencies: Women, Latinos, LGBT. To me, that is a winning coalition. Maybe we should continue with activism within these groups.

  78. Hillary has transcended the Congress. She doesn’t need minority title and she doesn’t need Reid’s job,
She is her own woman finally with her own voice and her own message.

I was not a Hillary supporter when this started; I supported Biden. Howevr, her mastery of the facts, her tenacity; her perserverence, and her strength of charxcter won me over. I supported her with money and defended her often.

Hillary has been the center of media attention without being a media darling (which is a good thing). The country has connected with her and she is not going away.

I personally hope she does agree on VP. I will not vote for Obama because of his inexperience and the way he and his supporters conducted themselves during this primary. I still hold hope that he will be uncovered for the fraud he is. I am waiting got the Odinga video/ ad….

  79. got=for

  80. Hillary should run for Governor of NY

  81. I still think she should say kiss my ass, I don’t accept BO getting 49 delegates from MI.

Let me know what Clinton says tonight, because I just can’t take the media right now.

  82. Denver!

  83. Hillary has won SD by 59%

  84. Oops, I just read my post. I made a typo. Correction: I don’t want her to run for VP.

  85. A reporter from Fox News said they will continue the campaign and stress her electability.

  86. I too want her to go to Denver.

  87. Susan at noquarters is still saying that a video on Michelle is coming out. Supposedly, it is debuting tomorrow.

  88. FoxNews says that Hillary will come on around 9:30. McAuliffe coming on.

  89. Hillary and Bill are walking to the stage.

  90. Here she comes.

  91. She looks great. She looks like a winner.

  92. She is talking about our journey to rebuid America, The crowd is energized.

  93. She will be making no decisions tonight!

  94. She was awesome.

  95. BJInChicago: I wonder if the video is paybacks for Obama’s “victory” speech being held at the same venue where the RNC will hold their convention.

Maybe the Republicans find him so abhorent that they’ll let this one loose even if it means Clinton takes over.

  96. Theresa, I don’t know. but there is something about his attitude that begs payback. I think it is called the audacity of hubris.

Are you listening to his speech? It does not hold a candle to Hillary’s. It truly makes me sad.

  97. Your post brought back something my mother used to say when we wanted to “go along” with something dumb our friends were doing.
“If your friend jumped off the top of the Empire State Building would YOU?”
(I am that old that the Empire State building was still the tallest building when I was young! God, I AM old lol)
The supers are piling on, like lemmings or like dumb kids trying to be cool by imitating one another.
I have already sent my message to Hillary- there is a lovely spot just for that right on her front page.
I sent her the following oldie but goodie poem

    Don’t Quit
    Author Unknown

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road your trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and its turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up
    When he might have captured the victors cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
    It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit!

  98. “I was against being for Clinton before I was for being against her.” ~ LanceThruster

  99. Hi Ron….sigh….maybe too late for you to see this so, guess I’ll email you at home…

I expected Ron Sims to dash to the Obama camp last night but Gary Locke is a disappointment.
