Well, that’s not good

juniors.gifEliott Spitzer gets caught on tape. From the NYTimes:

ALBANY – Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation.

The wiretap recording, made during an investigation of a prostitution ring called Emperors Club VIP, captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.

Doesn’t anyone in politics get laid by their spouses anymore? Let’s hope he has a perfectly reasonable explanation for this, like, he had a sudden desire for cheesecake from Junior’s and the person taking the order got all confused.

Can I just say that Silda does not look at all happy about this. She looks very sad and anguished. I can’t decide what makes me angrier; that the lefty blogosphere is carrying out a pogrom against female bloggers or that yet another male politician is disappearing his soon to be invisible middle aged wife and some PR person is making her stand next to him while he delivers the bad news.

  1. No, no es nada bueno. It is not like he was Mr. popularity to start with…oh well

  2. From what I heard on CNN, he hasn’t resigned yet. He’s a Hillary supporter. I wonder if he’ll still be a superdelegate if he has to step down?

  3. He did not resign in his brief, no questions presser. But he said things like “politics isn’t about any one individual,” and “what matters are the issues and what is best for the people of New York.”

So I think he will be resigning, and in fact CBS and NBC are reporting that he will resign, although there is not an expected time yet.

Saddest wife standing by her man: Dina McGreevey, standing there with what was clearly a tranquilizer induced smile on her face as Jim McGreevey announced that he was a gay American. (Of course, the real scandal wasn’t that he was gay, or even that he had been unfaithful, but that he’d given his boyfriend a high-paying state job for which he was not qualified…..)

  4. Yes, I don’t see how he can stay in the job when he’s the subject of a federal investigation. Honestly, they are cracking down on prostitution at the same time they are shredding the Constitution. I wonder if they had a warrant for the wiretaps?

  5. “Doesn’t anyone in politics get laid by their spouses anymore?” Reliable sources report it isn’t just politicians.

  6. ufa: heh.

I don’t see this affecting Hillary…but who knows. Leave it to the BObots and the MSM….

  7. BB: Did they even *need* a warrant for the wiretaps? And how can we get Obama to order cheesecake…?

  8. Yes, I feel bad for the wives who are forced to stand by their slimeball husbands every six months when one of these politicians gets caught in a sex scandal. These wives are invisible women and good for Hillary for doing more with her life than just become another political wife remembered for standing by her husband when he got caught with his pants down. I’m personally sick of these apologies because they all sound the same. I’m from Detroit and we had to watch our scum mayor do the same thing on television. It’s getting old. Kinda makes me happy that I’m still young and single.

  9. Ah yes….. the carnage has started.

I just came from DK and HP and the OBots are already making all kinds of references to Bill’s zipper and demanding that Hillary calls for Spitzer’s head.

Wow, what did it take? minutes?

  10. UpstateNY: Even though I think all of these guys are scum, this is a private matter and it’s already embarassing for Silda and all the wives before her to face this in the public eye. I don’t think anyone should bring Hillary’s campaign into this unless it is to praise these women for having the courage to face the media scrutiny and take the blame for their husband’s mistakes.

  11. DVoter: I agree with you 100%, but remember, this is politics and in many people’s minds:

gov of NY + current sex scandal = sen. of NY + past sex scandals

When it comes to the smearing the Clintons, everything seems to be fair play

  12. Over at TalkLeft, they are examining how this came about. Seems that Spitzer’s bank reported what they regarded as suspisious transfers of money from Spitzer’s accounts to a corporation. The bank claimed it thought this was bribe money. So, the FBI’s political corruption unit came in on it. Examing the situation, the discovered that the corp was a front for the prostitution ring.

And that there was a crime called ‘framing’ going on. It seems to involve making payments look like something they are not. Then the Mann act.

So, there is a lot of Bush DOJ stuff here. Which is suspicious. May be that the Bushies were spying on Spitzer to see what they could find. Wonder what other Dems are being subject to the same scrutiny.

  13. I love your graphic in this post. I wish I was at Junior’s having lunch and waiting for a matinée to start.

Thanks for fond memories of the Big Apple. Much more pleasant than watching Spitzer roasted on a spit.
