Public Service Announcement

Ladies, Update your records!

Bill Kristol made the following observation that I think is particularly relevent in the wake of Hillary’s win in CA, NJ, NY and MA:

On the February 3 edition of Fox Broadcasting Co.’s Fox News Sunday, panelist and New York Times columnist Bill Kristol said the only people supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s (D-NY) presidential campaign “are the Democratic establishment and white women.” Kristol then asserted that “it would be crazy for the Democratic Party to follow an establishment that’s led it to defeat year after year,” and added, “White women are a problem, that’s, you know — we all live with that.”

The Democratic party doesn’t have a problem with white women but the Republican party sure does if it wants to win against Hillary this fall. So, once again, I refer you to the following diary I initially posted on DailyKos. Guard your voting rights jealously and don’t let the Kristols of the world maneuver them away from us:

The topic of the day is “voter fraud”. The League of Women Voters filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court regarding the Indiana Voter Fraud Law. And here’s another piece on it from NPR.And here’s the money quote that should give you chills:

The devil, Smith contends, is in the details of Indiana’s law. He cites, for example, the case of a woman who made three trips to the motor vehicle bureau in a vain attempt to get a free voter ID card. Her problem, even after she obtained her birth certificate, was that it was not in her married name. While the state does provide free voter ID cards, Smith observes, voters incur considerable costs in time and money to secure the documents the state requires as a condition for getting the cards.

Scary, eh?

I mentioned this a couple of months ago in The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pantsuit. At the risk of sounding like Miss Teen SC, I personally believe that the voter fraud case is being brought to the USSC not just because states and their Republican enablers are trying to suppress minority voters. I think they’re after women this time. Because it’s much harder to try voter suppression tricks ala Ohio 2004 on half the population. Those long lines in Ohio worked to kill minority turnout but women are a MUCH larger portion of the population. The media is bound to notice that even if we do have to smack them on the head with an iron skillet. Now, who here thinks that the US Supreme Court will reject Indiana’s voter fraud law? Speak up! Anybody?

That’s right. Not with Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito on the bench. All you need to do is be an obsequious toady for Kennedy and his sense of greatness at being the tiebreaker will go straight to his head. He leans conservative, so I think it is a given that he will not find the fraud law burdensome. So, how will the Rovians swing this to suppress us? Well, here’s a clue: about 7 years ago, the IRS sent me a letter telling me I had misrepresented myself on my tax return and that my IRS name and my Social Security name did not match and would I please send $2100.00 as quickly as possible. Yes, believe it or not, the IRS and SS administration do not cross reference their databases. Crazy but true. And I, being a paperwork averse person, had never bothered to update my name with my new married name because I never thought the government wouldn’t index their database on SSN. Call me naive. And, although the state law does not specifically discriminate against women, real life will. Because men do not generally change their names in their lifetimes but women do, sometimes several times. And the paperwork to change all of the bills and credit cards and driver’s licenses and mortgages is a pain in the ass so many of us, myself included, put it off.So, what does that mean for us? Well, say Tweety keeps it up and people see more of Hillary that they like and they vote for her on SuperDuperTuesday and she becomes our nominee. (Hey, anything can happen at this point) Then the Supreme Court rules that the Indiana voter fraud law stands and voter registration databases all across the country are purged of women whose names do not match with their SSN or passport number or driver’s license or birth certificate or <insert favorite official document here>. The Republicans manage to suppress thousands and thousands of women in key battleground states and poof! McCain, or Huckabee or Romney is sworn in.Don’t let it happen to you. I might be paranoid, but when I start hearing persistent s%^& like this voter fraud thingy, my tinfoil antenna start twitching telling me that something’s up.Get your affairs in order, make sure all of your documents and database entries are consistent, track down all of the marriage licenses and divorce decrees you have and make sure everyone who needs a copy gets one. Don’t wait til the last minute. Then find out when registration closes for your state and call the office to make absolutely sure that you are on the registration rolls.Don’t leave it to chance, don’t put it off, don’t forget to follow up. Because you know that Karl and his friends are working overtime to take us out any way they can.

Pass it around.

  1. You’re so right about Karl & Co.

They’ll screw us any which way they can.

  2. No Blood for Hubris: Spread the word. If Hillary is the nominee, I predict the purging of the logs will begin in earnest. Better to get women moving on this as I suspect that certain government agencies tasked with updating records are going to suddenly start slowing down like they have at the INS in processing residency visas and citizenship applications.
And if this is where the Voter ID law is going, we are in deep #$%# if we don’t get a move on.

  3. My family and I are very much afraid of the POLICE OFFICERS here in Florida. We can no longer walk in our nationhood without being stopped by a police officer. My fiancé and I were trying to help my sister and husband find their way to our community when two officers were running behind him telling him to stop. I was asking them what happened. Police officers continued to KICK, PUNCHED and SLAP my fiancé to the ground. Even after I told POLICE OFFICERS that he did not speak ENGLISH, the POLICE OFFICERS told me to take my keys out of the ignition and put them on the street. I at this point the POLICE OFFICERS telling him to put his hand in the back, even after I told him that would not be possible due to the fact that my fiancé he did not speak ENGLISH and has had several surgeries done in the past years.
    1. He has asthma so please be careful.
    2. He had surgery in upper right shoulder.
    3. He had surgery in the middle of his abdomen.
    4. He had surgery and metal clips in heel, ankle, and knee.
With all this told to the POLICE OFFICERS they still continue to tase him and kick him down.
My sister and brother in law had to cut their paid vacation short and loose out on universal, and Disney tickets because they are afraid of what the police officers might do to her family. In Eagle Pointe S we the Hispanics in this area are very much afraid of what the cops will do to us if we do nothing. Why is it when someone in this community gets robed the first house they look for is the one with Hispanics and Blacks. Then people say FL is not against black and Hispanics. I am here to say that is true. Ever since we moved into this community all we hear from the people is the overwhelming response to the police officers in this community, but I am here to say, it should not be placed on my front door just because we are Hispanic. We work very hard and pay our taxes and everything this state wants us to pay for. so why are these white cops doing this to us? My son and his friends decided to go for a walk at about 9:30 pm; all of the sudden the cops stopped them and asked them for ID. I son’s were so discussed with the police officers that he decided to cancel his application for Police officer. We are so tired of everything that has been happening here in Florida that we wish we never came here. The only people that can come outside and walk their dogs are white. The police officers threatened, and harassed us with jail time and those we should be feeling shame of ourselves for having this HISPANIC THIEF in our home. I need someone to help me. What is going on with the world when you could get arrested just for smoking a cigarette in the front of your house? That’s it I am going to leave Florida and move to a place where peace and trust still exist. If you must know here is my info.
