    • The End of the Rebels in the Ukraine and the Ukraine’s Future
We’re down to street fighting in Donetsk.  The Russian leaders resigned in the last two weeks.  The rebels appear to be done, at least in terms of their conventional military phase (of course, I could be wrong depending on how much stomach Ukrainian troops have for house to house fighting).  It seems like that would [...]

Danger, Elizabeth Warren!

Here’s how Elizabeth Warren started her Senate career yesterday:

Now, I think these are good questions and she elicited some very uncomfortable responses.  Any of us could have asked those questions because we want to know.  Why are only ordinary people prosecuted and persecuted with the government playing the role of Javert ruining people’s lives for what may be minor infractions, like drug abuse or petty theft, while the bankers get away with murder?

The problem is I think her own party is setting her up.  That’s not to say she shouldn’t be doing what she’s doing.  This is the kind of stuff we, the average citizens, like to see.  But because she is so prominent, right out of the gate, and such a threat to the right wing AND to the Democrats’ campaign warchests, she’s going to be put out there with enough rope to hang herself.

It’s hard for me to see exactly what angle Rush Limbaugh and the Glenn Beck types are going to use to neutralize her because there’s really nothing wrong with her line of questioning.  But I guarantee that she will become the next target of ridicule and misogyny before very long.  Both parties’ leadership want her out of the way.  They’ll do a Franken on her.

I hope she’s ready and that there are enough of us out here to push back the tide of nastiness headed her way.

Or at least that Paul Krugman can spare some time from his exhausting job tilting at windmills to put in a good word for her.

By the way, if banks are too big to fail or prosecute then the answer to our problems seems to be pretty simple- break them up first.  Voile!  We could prosecute them to our heart’s content.

Matt Taibbi has a review of Neil Barofsky’s book Bailout.  Taibbi focuses on the political gamesmanship and back stabbing aspect of Barofsky’s book while  I was shocked by the sheer amount of money we allowed the banks to have access to without any oversight.  Anyway, it’s all connected with what is about to fall down on Elizabeth Warren.

It’s the best $9.99 you’ll spend at Amazon this month (for the Kindle edition).

  1. My husband has wanted the too big to fail banks broken up since this started. He said the new organizations would have to hire people in all disciplines – and generate jobs. Plus, they could fail and could be prosecuted.

I wanted investment to flow through HOLC where the people with the loans are rescued too.

As you might imagine, dinner at our house is a thing to behold! We solve all the world’s problems every Friday – with wine!

  2. Democratic Nomination: Hillary? Nope, sorry. Elizabeth? C’mon? A mouthy little man, with small penis complex [SPC] ? Who better to trickle down on you?

    • Well . . . he’d have Obama’s support. Which means he’d get the same 93% of the black vote which Obama got, right there.

  3. Brava, Elizabeth Warren.
Brava, RD. Great video, great post!

  4. Warren was really, really good at that hearing. Made that whole panel of regulators squirm. They’re obviously not accustomed to being questioned about their effectiveness or the fact that the majority of Americans want to see Wall St.reined in and specific fraudsters frog-marched straight to a jail cell. And no, this is not going to make her popular on either side of the aisle. I’d read earlier that the press was cranky about Warren because she was not making herself available to the media types [poor babies] and appeared to be taking a low-key profile.

This appearance blows the lid off that latter notion. Morning Joe showed the clip and even Scarborough gave her props this morning. It’ll be interesting to see how she handles and maneuvers the palace intrigue. Better watch her back!

  5. Perhaps some Warren-minded HClinton supporter/voters from 2008 could form a defense/offense group called PUMAs for Warren or something equally clear as to the purpose of the group.

    • we retired the PUMA name here shortly after the 2008 elections. It served no useful purpose after Obama took office. We prefer “Democrats in Exile”

  6. Comments are disabled for this video, I guess the powers that be don’t want you to know just how many folks are cheering Elizabeth on.

  7. Great post, and I’ll look for the book at the library. But the word is spelled “Voila!”

At least you didn’t say “wah-lah” — which is a distressingly common internetism.

  8. “Democrats” may want to keep Warren as a show piece and someone to frighten the banksters with and shake down the money tree. She will hearten the rubes aka the 99% at the same time. Think of her as the Hubert Humphrey of 1948. Harry Reed can keep her “under control” most of the time and let her out for occassional good publicity so the Democrats can sound like real Democrats.

    • That is a real possibility. A couple of years ago there was a fight over whether a piece of land in New York City should be made into a park
or be “developed”. There was this “progressive” or “independent” democrats group fighting for it to be made into a park. The democratic powers that be quietly told this group that the decision was made not to make the land into a park, but that they wanted them to keep protesting
so that the rubes would think that progressives had a voice in the Democratic Party.

So with Elizabeth Warren, I wonder whether the Democratic powers that be, will not just let her, but actually encourage her to make a lot of noise while making sure that she has little influence. I hope she doesn’t let herself turn into a democratic “useful idiot”.

      • Too bad one of those progressive Democrats wasn’t wired up for sound and able to play back the whole conversation later.
Any progressive Democrat who is/was serious about their mission would/will do that for any other such conference with Democrats in Authority.

        • Apparently, there was a number of witnesses present and several
contacted a local radio station which is how I found out about it.
