“For Whatever Reason…”

Just a short time ago, I received an urgent message in my in-box from the Great Cheeto himself. The subject line of the the urgent e-mail reads “Pop Quiz.” The urgent e-mail is reproduced in full below (emphasis added):

Boston Boomer,

President Obama has appointed a bipartisan commission to develop recommendations to balance the budget. For whatever reason, the commission is loaded with Blue Dogs and Republican opponents of Social Security. For example, the Republican co-chair of the commission, Alan Simpson, recently insulted an advocate for women’s rights by saying Social Security is like a welfare “milk cow with 310 million tits.” Seriously.

And that’s not all Simpson has said. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) has put together a website with Simpson’s most offensive quotes. The website has a game where you try and tell Simpson’s real quotes from fake ones. Play the game, and join the fight to protect Social Security, here:

Click here to see what Alan Simpson said about Americans who depend on Social Security.

Many members of the deficit commission are multi-millionaires and corporate CEOs who are out of touch with America. Some members of the commission have suggested cutting health care for veterans in order to preserve expensive weapons deals for defense contractors. A majority of the members of the commission favor gambling some, or all, Social Security funds on Wall Street.

In November, the commission will make its recommendations. In December, Congress is expected to vote on the recommendation without allowing any amendments. Before the commission releases its recommendations, we need to defend Social Security recipients from Wall Street, and veterans from defense contractors, by discrediting Alan Simpson’s campaign to cut those vital programs.

To do this, click here to learn more about Alan Simpson, share his quotes with your friends, and join the fight to protect Social Security.

Thanks for all you do,

Markos Moulitsas

Founder, Daily Kos

First, Kos is a bit slow on the uptake, isn’t he? This story has been out there for days, and the White House has already announced that it stands behind Alan Simpson.

“Alan Simpson has apologized and while we regret and do not condone his comments, we accept his apology and he will continue to serve,” Jennifer Psaki, the White House deputy communications director, told The New York Times.

But getting back to that urgent e-mail, Kos just can’t figure out why “for whatever reason,” the Cat Food Commission is “loaded with Blue Dogs and Republican opponents of Social Security.” Gee what could that reason be?

Clearly Kos is stumped. Let me see if I can help him out with a little pop quiz of my own:

1. If President Obama chose the members of the Cat Food Commission, what does the make-up of the Commission say about the President’s views on Social Security and Medicare?

2. Is President Obama, whom you admit appointed Alan Simpson and the other members of the Cat Food Commission, in a position to fire Mr. Simpson?

3. If President Obama, who appointed the members of the Commission and has the power to change its makeup, doesn’t fire Alan Simpson, what does that indicate to you about the President’s views on Social Security and Medicare?

4. Taking into consideration your answers to the above three questions, what do you think is the reason the Cat Food Commission is “loaded with Blue Dogs and Republicans who oppose Social Security?”

This message from Kos also put me in mind of something Paul Rosenberg wrote at Open Left a couple of days ago on the topic of Alan Simpson’s nasty remarks: The problem with Alan Simpson is NOT Alan Simpson

You’re thinking he’s going to say that the problem is the person who appointed Alan Simpson, right? Guess again. Rosenberg does not mention the President anywhere in his post! Here’s what Rosenberg says:

Alan Simpson is symptomatic of everything that’s wrong with America. He’s a crazy uncle, of course. But that’s not the problem. The problem is, no one tries to contain his craziness or limit it in any way. To the contrary, his craziness is not just encouraged, but celebrated. It’s normal. “A feature, not a bug,” as they say in the trade. [....]

Simpson is really not your archetypal crazy uncle. Unlike the crazy uncle, he knows damn well what’s going on around him–he just doesn’t give a damn about anyone else, unless he’s forced to. And that’s just it: No one will force him too. [sic] Quite the opposite. His “crazy unclehood” lies not in his own character, mean and nasty as it may be. It lies in the situation that surrounds him….

Well not only is no one in Versailles about to force Simpson to give a damn about anyone else, they’re seemingly pleased as punch to have such an outspoken leader for their misanthropy.

It’s Washington’s fault, or all of our faults, or something. Obama appointed Simpson, you nitwit! What does that say about Obama–leave the rest of us out of it. Oh, and Rosenberg quotes Digby on the subject, and she doesn’t notice that Obama is responsible for the make up of the Cat Food Commission either!

What’s going on here? Why is it that no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room? Are these blogger boys afraid of the mighty O, or are they just afraid of admitting they were wrong about him?

Anyway, after reading Kos’s desperate plea for help in fighting Alan Simpson, I couldn’t resist going over to the great Cheeto to look around and see how things are going at my old internet home. While I was there, I just happened to come across this diary on the Cheeto’s demographics. Remember how us bitter, clingy old working class women were driven out of that place? Well it seems most of us haven’t gone back. And it looks like the youngsters who were so avid for hope and change aren’t there anymore either. The Cheeto is “overwhelmingly…White. Over 50. Well-off. Male.

…the Daily Kos audeinece [sic] is overwhemlingly [sic] white (93%), well-educated (80% college grads and more) and affluent (37% make >$100k) and disproportionately older (53% >50) and male (64%) when compared the demographics of Internet Users.

This data is consistent with other indicators that demonstrate that Daily Kos demographics are also out of sych with on-line activist demographics; other sources include polls, surveys, and critiques of the older white maleness of Netroots Nation.

In fact, rather than increasing demographic diversity since these issues were raised years ago, the opposite seems to be occurring. Despite the more balanced demographics of the front page…DK readership seems to be whiter richer and more male than ever. Those who have followed Quantcast Reports will note, for example, that African American readership has declined from a high of 9% to 4% over the past 2 years.

Worst [sic] still for a site aiming to influence Democratic policy and politics is this — Older affluent highly educated white men are NOT the Democratic Party voter base.

Where are the voices and visions of those who have long made up the unswervng mainstay of the Democratic Party — African Americans, the poor and the unionized working class, women, Latino/as, the young??

Not here.

Bwaaahahahahahahaha! These people *are* Obama’s base. The Cheeto might as well have been taken over by Goldman Sachs! And the Democratic Party and its traditional policies are dead! Thanks in part to the mighty Kos.

  1. Markos and Chris Bowers are having a difficult time getting signatures on their petitions.

    • Are these blogger boys afraid of the mighty O, or are they just afraid of admitting they were wrong about him?

They’re afraid of admitting they were wrong about him. Men often talk very authoritatively even when they don’t know what the heck they’re talking about. Then it is almost impossible for them to admit that they were wrong.

      • The only problem with that is that Digby is a woman.

        • Oh, thought you were talking about Kos. What I said holds true for men anyway.

        • If you’re talking about Digby, maybe she is afraid of the mighty O.

          • She’s afraid of her Amen Corner of misogynist yahoos. She decided being a B lister was important enough to tolerate this garbage, and now she’s stuck. Without them, she’s nothing.

          • Amen, Seriously.

Digby gave up her integrity looooong ago, to be a panel member at Yearly Kos. It’s her own magic Versailles.

Most of her non-rabid, rational posters are gone.

She is, indeed, stuck with those she misled.

        • Digby’s site used to be so good, but it was a hotbed of CDS and Obama adoration during the primary. She did nothing to push back, draw boundaries or take control. And I have not been impressed with her writing since the election.

Was she afraid of the koolaid bullies or did she agree with them? Either way, I lost a lot of respect for her.

          djmm

          • Digby tolerates the most obnoxious trolls on her site. Apparently, she thinks the First Amendment applies to bloggers as well as the government, or it’s against her religion to can trolls, or something. Hence, she will never do jack $#!+ to push back, draw boundaries, or take control.

        • She (and other female obots) really wanted to be “one of the boyz.” It’s easy for anyone to buy into CDS and Obama worship because all the Hillary hate and misogyny is exceptionally vicious.

    • These guys are SO late to this story. They must be out playing topless beer pong with the WH speech staff.

      • It is kinda disconcerting to click on a shortcut to TC and then see that horrible color.on our frontpage. The color is so ugly partly because it’s artificial.

The kossacks sure picked an appropriate nickname though.

I seem to recall reading that Cheetos contain no natural ingredients and have no nutritional value.

(Don’t quote me on that because I may be mistaken or just made it up. It ought to be true though.)

        • But Cheetos are made with natural ingredients–

PEOPLE! SOYLENT ORANGE IS PEOPLE!!!

      • “Beer Pong” would be a great name for a rock band.

  2. Reading this made me feel like it was deja vu all over again while running through molasses in opposing wind.

Didn’t we here at TC know this days, weeks, and primaries ago?

    Kos.. pathetic.

And, I am opposed to saying that KOSs’ demographic is highly educated. Schooled, maybe… but closed minded. That is not a sign of higher intelligence.

  3. I got the same email too. I don’t know how I suddenly wound up on DKos’ mailing list, but this is the second such email I’ve received, laughed out loud at, and then deleted.

    • This is the third one I’ve gotten. I think they just send them out to anyone who is still registered at DK. What’s really hilarious is that Chris Bowers has been hired ot manage this e-mail list!

      • My third or fourth..into trash.

The only e-mails that I still respond to are from the ACLU. They are still in denial. All of the “bad stuff” isn’t Obama’s fault but “it’s the White House signed this horrible law” or it’s the Administration or advisors, etc. There is a small ray of hope it that it’s occasionally the “Obama Administration” but they still refuse to assign responsibility to the Messiah.

  4. These guys (and gals) kill me. Their cognitive dissonance is overwhelming. Do they not have brains? Do they not know they were played? (I’m speaking to you, Mr. Bowers.) Do they not know that Obama set up the whole fraudulent commission and appointed the members? Obama. Their guy. And Obama’s guy is Simpson. So Simpson is their guy too. Cuz they sure in hell haven’t disowned Obama.

Do they not know the plan? To steal some more of our money, what little we have left?

A thinker, a true intellectual if you will, would look at the facts, would see he/she made a terrible mistake, a terrible misjudgment, and would then suck it up and admit it. (Maybe even try to correct it.) To do otherwise just makes one look like a total idiot. Not smart at all. Just defensive and in denial. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

And don’t get me started on Digby, a true exercise in cowardice.

  5. More proof that Kool-aid kills brain cells.

Markos is starting to resemble one of those guys who huffs paint – after about 20 years.

  6. I got one too–not long ago. I had deleted w/o reading, but after seeing this pulled it up. My response was to unsubscribe myself. I haven’t posted over there in years. In fact, had forgotten the name I’d used.

Hard to believe most are over 50–last time I read anything there, the commenters sounded young and a few bricks short of a load.

    • I also wonder about the accuracy of those statistics. :???:

      • I think the youngsters have lost interest and moved on to some new celebrity idol.

        • I think you might be right on. It seems to me that the kids are no longer the Obama enthusiasts they were a couple of years ago. Funny how quickly the Obama high wore off.

        • DKos looks like the home of the Peter Pan generation.

      • Personally, I’m not that surprised. A lot of these guys are overgrown adolescents who over-identify with people half their age. As if they can somehow magically put themselves on the “right” side of generational warfare against the “dry —–set.” Unfortunately for them, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Now that they’ve got this all stirred up, they’re trying to find one principle everybody can agree on, but what they didn’t anticipate was Gen Obama took it seriously and now want to escort the aging hipster wannabees to the ice floes. D’oh!

        • White corporatchiks on their second divorce, insisting on the confidentiality of heir cosmetologist/client relationships and trolling for the trophy wife.

  7. Obama seemed to be channeling George W. Bush today when he said during an interview on NBC:

“I’m making decisions that are not necessarily good for the nightly news and not good for the next election, but for the next generations.”

    • Oh Lawd, he is so full of himself. News flash, Obama, this generation could still use some jobs.

      • Younger people getting out of school and college could sure use some jobs as well….

Everybody can use employment (well, unless their trust-funded and well-endowed retirees of whatever age).

    • The next generations of fat cats, maybe. The rest of us, not so much.

    • “not good for the next election” ???

Hahahahaha! I am so looking forward to that, Mr. POTUS/TOTUS.

  8. “For whatever reason” is an unnecessary pretext for that particular sentence. Why is it there at all? He could have said, “the commission is loaded with Blue Dogs and Republican opponents of Social Security,” and left it at that. I get the feeling “for whatever reason” was done in editing to assure the O’Bots didn’t get the vapors.

  9. Just saw a sources piece on Drudge ( I know, I know) that the oval office is getting new curtains and carpets for the speech Tue. night. Sometimes I scan the scandal sheets.

Does Obama not realize that nobody watches his speeches anymore??

    • I read earlier the speech is about combat troops leaving Iraq. Guess he was on vacation while the rest of the world watched the event.

Apparently the Dem House members and Senators up for re-election are pissed that he is just going to talk about last weeks news. They would rather he say/do sometthing to bring the base home for the mid-terms.

They gave him their votes and he gives them the back of his hand. Or maybe its the middle finger.

      • Yup.

And like others have posted repeatedly, it is like Obama wants the Dem majority out of Congress so it will be easier for him to say they are blocking him.

But it makes me wonder if Issa and subpoena power will snap Obama out of it. Or if we will see more of the dog and pony show revealed, like this cat food commission, and the Reps running shallow investigations of blustery topics for the next two years just to smear him and do no real damage to corporatist’s causes.

Not sure which way this will go, since Issa has been pining to make a name for himself and move up the ladder and might want some real meat this time around.

Issa funded the recall in CA against Gov Davis for the temerity of trying to pay the bills by raising the temporary reduction of car registration fees. Arnold the Governator swooped in with the help of George Shultz and stole the spot Issa wanted.

So this might be get uglier for the easily offended Pres than he expects. We all know Obama doesn’t take criticism well and it’s where he slips up even more.

    • Lol Wow, they’re really desperate. They should start playing Where in the World is Barack Obama to juice those ratings.

    • What? No stadium?No columns?
I remember when W was babbling about changing teh evil Clinton carpet.
You know, that W who signed the SOFA agreement with Iraq which provided for withdrawal to start June 30 …2009. Yup Jr.jr was not exactly early on that
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S.%E2%80%93Iraq_Status_of_Forces_Agreement

    • Does Obama not realize that nobody watches his speeches anymore??

maybe that’s the reason for the new curtains and carpets lol! People might tune in to see them, thinking it’s HGTV

  10. The whole avoidance thinghy is almost as comical as with the Gibbs story – when they totally forgot whose spokesman Gibbs was.

  11. Thanks for the info, BB.

The fact that Cheetoville has become predominantly white, older, wealthy males must mean they’re racists, right?

    (Ok, I couldn’t resist. LOL)

  12. Haven’t read the whole post yet BB – will go back to complete it – but as usual, you’re right on target. You said:

What’s going on here? Why is it that no one wants to talk about the elephant in the room? Are these blogger boys afraid of the mighty O, or are they just afraid of admitting they were wrong about him?

Or, as an abuse victim, they are still in love with him and haven’t figured out they need to leave.

  13. *sigh* It comes back again to the trust issue. There are admittedly a few problems with SS’s solvency, but they are fixable problems – if TBTB actually had fixing in mind rather than dismantling.

But after healthcare, no one trusts these fuckers, R or D, to have any intent whatsoever of “fixing”. It’s just a handy excuse to gut a good program. People shudder and grow afraid and dig in their heels when it’s even mentioned, and FOR GOOD REASON. Then the pols tut tut and point out the necessity of doing something, and berate the public for being curiously and irrationally unwilling.

No, we are not irrational. To use the O’s favorite analogy – they already totaled the minivan (healthcare). Now they want the keys to the Ferrari. It is not irrational to say HELL FUCKING NO.

I keep beating this drum over and over, but it’s the trust. It’s the trust. The People have ZERO trust in our govt and those who run it, whether R or D. There is no sense that any of them have any loyalties other than to a) their own side’s power for power’s sake, and b) politically connected monied interests.

They say we have become “ungovernable”, as if it were a mysterious virus of unreasoned petulance that has inexplicably engulfed the national psyche. I say we have become deeply suspicious of those who seek to govern us, and have become so WITH DAMN GOOD CAUSE.

    • Honk, honk!

    • I’m depending on that mistrust. I PRAY they dig in their heels even more! If they steal SS for Wall St, we are hyper toast …I’ll be on the curb with Mom and our Glad bag luggage .

    • Couldn’t have said it better myself, WMCB!

    • Honk, honk.

Have missed your posts for a while…glad to see your name again.

      Anyway, back to your post….

That lack of trust across the board of topics and party lines is probably why we are seeing so many divide and conquer techniques against constituents.

I thought the unpatriotic theme out of the Dubya Admin/MSM was bad. The Obama Admin has put that to shame. I’ve never heard so many insults and excuses from the WH/MSM against various segments in my lifetime.

Look over there….it’s their fault we can’t do anything that doesn’t help Wall St.

  14. The inability to say Obama is responsible is all the above , but it’s also because they know he’s in charge of squat and there is no POTUS as we know the term. I guess their job is to somehow pretend there is a POTUS and that Obama is that POTUS . But also to somehow maintain a POTUS is not responsible for his decisions. Quite a balancing act…which they aren’t very good at .

Another balancing act : Obama will run for his 2nd term as DC outsider. His supporters will say he did great, historic things and so let’s keep it rolling . But they will also say DC wouldn’t let him be him and he needs to stay in to fight them!

    ugh

  15. Alan Simpson is symptomatic of everything that’s wrong with America. He’s a crazy uncle, of course. But that’s not the problem. OMFG! No one tries to contain his craziness or limit it in any way???? And who the hell put him on the commission? Who is the man who put this “crazy uncle” at the driver’s wheel? Geez, but those cheeto heads really do have cheetos for brains.

  16. Nice one riverdaughter. Every swipe at bloggerboy kos seems like retribution for my having been drummed out of there by the kos brownshirts.

  17. And revenge for driving David Weintraub to an early heart attack death with their cruel and viscious torture.

  18. And nice one on Rosenberg who is a stuffed shirt at OL. I do miss Matt Stoller though.
