    • Florida expert suspended for refusing wetlands permit
Wetlands are a vital part of the ecosystem, and there are all sorts of shenanigans that go on with the state mitigation programs – Florida being infamous for all kinds of backchannel practices: Florida’s top state wetlands expert has been suspended after she refused to issue a permit on a controversial project — one that [...]

Wednesday DIY morning news

Sorry, but I don’t have the time or energy to scour the internet for news this morning so you’re gonna have to do it yourself. Go out, find stories, bring back a link and a brief sample.

I’ll get you started:

ACORN ‘gotcha’ man arrested in attempt to tamper with Mary Landrieu’s office phones
Alleging a plot to tamper with phones in Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building in downtown New Orleans, the FBI arrested four people Monday, including James O’Keefe, 25, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group’s credibility.

Also arrested were Joseph Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan, all 24. Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, who is the acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Louisiana. All four men were charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

It’s just past 5 am out here on the left coast. I’m going back to bed, I’ll see you in the morning.

  1. Sorry you had a ruff nite, myiq. Rest up!

I just can’t get enough of watching the meltdown at the prog blogs. At the Cheeto, former bot Dem from CT wants more action less talk from Obama.

    • I just can’t help but think that Hillary could have come up with some “bold moves” and not just papered all the problems over with fake p.r.

      NYT editorial: Opposite of bold

      • Was it Douthat at the Times who said earlier this week that BO went too big with healthcare, that he should shift to an incrementalist strategy. Guess they are hedging.

    • On the Krugman bit about Bernanke, he is apparently having to make direct calls to Senators to end the debate on his reconfirmation. Wonder if that’s happened before with a Fed Chair.

      • In a comment on that post, someone wrote

        “Please don’t hate me,”

        and then in tiny letters:

        “i still like Obama”

The Cheeto has really turned against “the One.”

  2. Here’s the mood in B0botland “Before” the bestest speech ever.

We’ll compare it with the “after”

  3. News item from CA. Poll of CA voters says only 12% of all registered voters identify with Tea Party. Not sure if that means anything at all.

  4. Oregon votes to increase taxes on the wealthy and on businesses:

    Hoping other states follow.

    • It’s about time. Today, I am proud to be an Oregonian.

    • They need to do the same in Washington, but Boeing would probably lay off a few thousand workers and then whine that the state was “not good for business”.

  5. Krugman reminds us he always thought BO wanted to be Reagan.

  6. I’m not sure why Confluence thinks it is necessary to dredge up a bunch of stories appearing elsewhere on the internet every morning. I came to Confluence to read its specific point of view. Like others, I can read these other stories elsewhere. Now I must sift through the junk in order to find the occasional original thought here. Please return to your election format of posting only what is relevant to the purpose of the blog and stop posting these morning digests.

    • Sounds like you need to find another blog if we don’t tailor it exactly to your needs. We all love the links, thank you very much. And FYI: they are all exactly relevant and timely about what is going on, and the posters offer their point of view based on that, and we then comment as well. Very strange to drop in her and offer attitude and then leave. The internet is huge, start your own blog and design it the way you want.

    • You’re incredibly rude!!! Some people like me depend on Boston Boomer and other TC front pagers who take the time to gives us links to what they’ve found on the web. The time they spend is greatly appreciated. I start my day with The Confluence morning links. Because I’m on the east coast and I get up early I sometimes have to come back because they’re not up yet. The links are a starting point for our conversation.

      Your recommendation is NOT appreciated.

    • This isn’t Burger King. You get it OUR way.

  7. Sorry to link to redstate, but this is funny.

Tonight, President Obama will unveil his State of the Union.

Said one well connected Democrat last night, “Things are so bad there is a betting pool on which DEMOCRAT screams ‘You Lie!’ tomorrow night.” Well, tomorrow night is now arrived.

    • Do we really need a link to a SoCon site?

      • Yeah, good point. If any of the mods are around, feel free to delete it.

        • Actually I enjoyed the link, thanks votermom! I think it’s good to stay open to other viewpoints as long as it doesn’t get nasty or derogatory.

        • As long as no one is just spamming Weekly World News stories and Freeper memes it’s no problem. I’m more concerned with someone posting disguised right-wing talking points.

I read Wingnuttia blogs on a daily basis just like I read ones from the Kool-aid Kingdom. I want to know what they are saying and I’m not going to depend on anyone else to read them for me.

OTOH – If I was a highly-paid member of the Village media I would just make stuff up that supported my preconceived notions of what other people believe. Like when Rush Lame-baugh says “Liberals believe . . .” and then he rattles off a bunch of crap no actual liberal has ever believed.

  8. Today is Holocaust Memorial Day. The Soviet Red Army liberated Auschwitz on this day in 1945. Over one million people were murdered in that concentration camp, mostly Jews and also Poles, Gypsys, Soviet pows, and others.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8483017.stm

  9. Not a link, just a thought (idle speculation).

Obama’s current dilemma is that he is now exposed as weak and ineffectual (at the least). His political strength derived from his supposed legions of adoring fans, his fund-raising machine, and the AA vote.
The MA vote showed that the fans are gone. The “fundraising”, which we know is mostly corporate-sourced, are not going to go to someone who is radioactive during campaigns.
Reid & Pelosi are scared of what might happen in Nov. They can’t afford a leadership vacuum.
So I’m thinking the stage is set for some kind of soft coup within the Dem leadership. I am expecting to see a lot of grandstanding, backstabbing, and pre-emptive under-the-bussing.
So tonight’s STFU speech, I think, will probably be really geared more towards BO pretending to show strength against any Dem opposition or soft-coup instigators.
From that POV, the “budget freeze” theatre looks like a desperate cry of “Help, GOP! Save me from Reid & Pelosi!”

  10. “We Send Doctors, Not Soldiers”

This is an interesting commentary by Castro on the kinds of aid his country and others are bringing to Haiti: http://tinyurl.com/yzhayg2
