Christmas Eve at The Confluence

Good Morning Conflucians! It’s hard to believe, but The Confluence is nearly two years old. In early 2008, Riverdaughter started this blog as an oasis for disaffected Kossacks who dared to question whether Barack Obama was the right choice for the Democratic nomination.

Riverdaughter hung in day after day, posting her intelligent and snarky commentary on daily events in one of the most hard-fought nomination fights I can remember. Gradually this blog grew into a small but powerful alternative voice in the liberal blogosphere.

After the RBC meeting on May 31, 2008, when the deal was sealed to install Obama as nominee, SM came up with the PUMA (Party Unity My Ass) acronym, and her idea went viral. Although we have been reviled for our dissident views, and we had to fight off numerous ugly troll-storms, we hung together through the Convention farce and the general election campaign.

After the election we continued on as an alternative liberal voice–a thorn in the side of the prog blogs and Obama syncophants who thought we would slink off and never be heard from again. Fat chance! Unfortunately, the puma label was twisted into things we had never intended, so we don’t use it anymore. We’ve moved on to be a voice in the wilderness, providing political commentary from the point of view of people whose eyes were wide open all along instead of clouded by Koolaid haze.

Each day that passes shows how right we were in our trepidation about Obama. More and more Americans are waking up to the reality that Obama isn’t much of a change from Bush. These days you see griping about Obama’s policies all over the liberal blogs, but no one wants to acknowledge that we were right all along. Jane Hamsher, for example would rather work with Grover Norquist and the tea party crowd than include us in her efforts to fight the health insurance bailout bill.

Something tells me we’ll continue to hang in there. My best Christmas present this year is waking up in the morning knowing that TC is here and I can count on all you Conflucians to pick me up when I’m down. And lately there have been more mornings when I wake up to find a brilliant Riverdaughter rant to read! I appears that RD’s hypergraphia is back, and that makes me really happy this holiday season.

So on this Christmas Eve, 2009, I want to thank each and every one of you for your contributions to this blog. That is the best Christmas present I can think of.

Here are some links to get the discussion going. Please post your own choice links in the comments.

Danny Glover: I See No Difference Between Bush And Obama Policies

“I think the Obama administration has followed the same playbook, to a large extent, almost verbatim, as the Bush administration. I don’t see anything different,” the activist movie actor said of Obama’s policies in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Middle East. “On the domestic side, look here: What’s so clear is that this country from the outset is projecting the interests of wealth and property. Look at the bailout of Wall Street. Why not the bailout of Main Street?”

That’s a good start, but Glover goes on to blame the system for Obama’s actions:

“What choice does he have—in four years, eight years? Let’s just call a spade a spade. Really. There are no choices out there. He may be just a different face, and that face may happen to be black—and if it were Hillary Clinton, it would happen to be a woman—but what choices do they have within the structure?”

Um…How come the Republicans always had choices–even when they didn’t control Congress–but the Democrats don’t? The Democrats have a supermajority and they’re still acting like Republicans. Danny Glover has a way to go before he completely wakes up to reality, but it’s a start.

And from the Black Agenda Report where no one was fooled by Obama’s lies: Barack Obama and Langston Hughes on “Grumblers” and “Merry Christmas”

When US presidents offer us their holiday greeting messages, do we know what are they really saying? How hard can it be to figure that out? Langston Hughes died in 1967, but he knew what every US president, including Barack Obama is really saying, underneath and behind the mask.

Go read the whole thing!

Of course the big news of the day is that the Senate has passed their monstrosity of a “health care reform” bill.

Senate Passes Sweeping Health-Care Bill

Thursday’s vote was a victory for President Barack Obama, who made the issue his top domestic priority despite lingering divisions among Democrats and the fierce opposition of Republicans. And it was a validation of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s decision to build consensus on his side of the aisle, rather than reach across party lines, a move that would have forced a lowering of ambitions.

What a pile of crap that is! What ambitions? Does the WSJ really believe that Republicans don’t want to hand over wads of money to giant health care corporations? And if Obama is the victor, who are the vanquished? Women mainly.

If the Stupak and Nelson language survives reconciliation between the House and Senate versions of the bill, abortion will effectively be abolished in many parts of the U.S. If the abortion isn’t covered by health insurance, doctors won’t perform them, and medical schools won’t provide training (many already do not). On top of that the conscience rules are strengthened in this bill to protect health care and pharmacy workers who refuse to provide treatment to women who need abortions, including rape victims who ask for the morning after pill and women who want birth control in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

  1. Merry Christmas Dr. Boomer. Wishing you and yours a day of peace and respite from the problems our country faces.

    • Thanks SoD and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas Eve.

I’m going to spend tonight with my brother and sister-in-law and my two precious nephews. I may hang out there tomorrow too, or else I’ll just have a peaceful day by myself.

      • I still have shopping to do! The gifts I ordered for my youngest niece from Amazon never made it and they’ll be here Saturday. I’ll be all the stores are sold out of the stuff I want too. Ugh!

  2. So, can anyone explain how I’m supposed to wrap a Craftsman 52 screwdriver set that is encased in hard flexible plastic with the screwdrivers all set in the diagonal???? OMG., you can’t just “wrap” it because it’s sharp edges and bendy nature tears even the toughest papers. It’s too big for any of the bags I have, it certainly doesn’t fit in any shirt box and I can’t bend the damn thing because it’s laid out on the diagonal. WTH is Sears thinking???

    Gah!

  3. I haven’t commented since that good day when Puma started, but I go here almost every day looking for support. It has been a despairing year, watching all our fears come true, with hardly anyone in real life to talk to for comfort. Thanks for comforting me, The Confluence, and for keeping me informed, and for not cutting your political conscience to fit the fashions of these times. I feel as if I belong to a kind of resistance and, though things are pretty shitty right now, I feel a warmth and intelligence here that makes me happy to hold my head high and keep up the good fight (remember when doing what was right was more important than winning? now, winning means you were right). Thanks for everything and I wish everyone a happy new year.

    • That’s beautiful Emma–nice to know you are with us. Happy Holidays.

    • Emma,

It’s good to know you’ve been there lurking, but please don’t be a stranger. Jump in and join us! We welcome your voice.

    • Beautifully put. A nice gift, Emma.

    • That’s lovely–2009 was worse than 2008, IMO–we’re due for a reversal of trends and a few good years! 2010 is bound to be a lot better.

    • That is just how I feel Emma, Happy New Year!

And a special thanks to bostonboomer who always makes everyone feel welcome.

  4. And here is my long-distance dedication to all of my (former) friends who are now sending me cards and calling me wondering how they could have let our friendship lapse.

  5. Happy Holidays to my Conflucian family! There are no words (though we will continue to grope for them, because that’s what we do) to articulate my gratitude and fondness for this site. Isn’t it odd–forming such a meaningful virtual community? It’s been a great comfort and education coming here every day for the past 2 years. As you said BB, best present imaginable! (The rest of them can keep their fantasy ponies.)

Thanks to all for their endless wit, erudition, and compassion. Onward to 2010!

  6. Timmy is delusional for the holidays:

Geithner: Job growth should resume by springtime

WASHINGTON (AP) – Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says he believes it’s reasonable to expect “positive job growth” by spring and that people should have confidence about an improving economic climate.

In an interview broadcast on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Geithner (GYT’-nur) also said he believes many banks around the country still have work ahead of them to regain the public’s faith. He said, “They need to work very hard to shore it up” and said he wasn’t certain that “all banks get it.”

Geithner’s stewardship of the Treasury has come in for criticism on occasion. He said Wednesday, “I think most people would say the economy actually is strengthening now going into the end of the year,” but that the key is to regain lost jobs.

    http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091223/D9CP7CC01.html

    • Those might be the temporary census jobs.

    • Yep- also in CA Boxer DID bring home the bacon with several shovel ready jobs – mostly roads, and and some money all around the the state for health locations and a good sized mass transit item for MARIN-SONOMA.

Between that and the unemployed that they will probably whack off the end of insurance, things will look sooo much better in CA. (snark)

      • Too bad she didn’t stand firm enough for women’s reproductive rights.

No other counties need mass transit money besides MARIN-SONOMA? Give me a friggin break.

      • Nice to see she delivered for Marin-Sonoma; wow they are so poor there in the heart of wine country, Napa valley. Funny how DiFi and the Box manage to get some goodies for these poor, wretched, barefoot grape stompers. Down in Hawthorne, Compton, Riverside and San Berdo where all the filthy rich AA’s and Beaners hang out the political payoffs go to the friends and relatives of the politicos in power who are the right color but they have to keep up with Oprah and you know, that takes a lot of political dough.

Of course this new health care bill is going to be really swell. 3-4 billion $$$ per year CA definitely does not have. But DiFi and the Box would never play politics for CA to get paid for these unfunded mandates when the needs are so great in Nebraska, Fl, UT, Wy. LA et al. Yeah, I will vote DiFi forever!

        • LOL! I wonder if Kerry got anything for us. Probably not. He’s never been that good at bringing home the bacon.

  7. & Jimmy has really jumped the shark. Didn’t this guy used to have principles? We’re supposed to believe there is NO connection between his apology and his grandson’s state senate race? Geez Jimmy…what has happened to you?

Ex-President Carter offers apology to Jews

ATLANTA (AP) – Former President Jimmy Carter apologized for any words or deeds that may have upset the Jewish community in an open letter meant to improve an often-tense relationship.

He said he was offering an Al Het, a prayer said on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. It signifies a plea for forgiveness.

The letter comes weeks after his grandson, Jason Carter, said he would run for a Georgia state Senate seat being vacated by President Barack Obama’s nominee to be U.S. ambassador to Singapore. If David Adelman is confirmed as ambassador in January, Jason Carter will be a candidate in a March special election in the northeast Atlanta district.

Jason Carter, who is running in a district with a vocal Jewish population, said in a statement that his grandfather’s letter was unrelated to his campaign and hailed the apology as a “great step towards reconciliation.”

    http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091224/D9CPC77G0.html

    • Oh My. I had seen the headline about Carter yesterday and, having read both his books, I was wondering what the heck was going on.

Saddens me to realize someone who had risen in my estimation in the past few years for his courageous statements about the P-I conflict. He had a reservoir of credibility with me because of his attempts to broker peace when he was President.

      Now, not so much.

  8. What a great post! Thanks for the link to the Langston Hughes poem/article.

  9. Merry Christmas BB and the rest of the great TC Community.

Here in Germany, Christmas is today, but it goes on for 2 more days (25 & 26).

I hope the horrible parts of the HC bill will be removed in the conference.

Why have only Conservative Dems threatened to sink the bill every time?

When are Progressive Dems going to make the same kind of noise?

  10. Happy Holidays to All. I, too, am grateful for the political sustenance here.

    From my old stomping grounds:
The unemployment rate for African Americans surpassed that of every other state, reaching an average of 22 percent for the past 12 months…nearly one out of every two black men in Milwaukee is not working, compared with 18.1 percent of white men and 22.1 percent of Hispanic men.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/23/AR2009122302550.html

    • It’s good to see you, Peg. Don’t be a stranger.

    • I just read where adolescent black males have an unemployment rate of 35%.

He should be ashamed of himself – he’s done nothing for the AA community.

  11. Scroll down further at Black Agenda Report and read post on Obama’s continued privatization of the wars.

Danny Glover is right. Bush, Obama, Obama, Bush–it doesn’t matter.

  13. There is a new way to “cook” the numbers of jobs created under the stimulus.

“Any existing job funded with stimulus money now will be counted as a job saved, whether it was endangered or not, according to new guidance issued on Dec. 18 by Office of Management and Budget Director Peter R. Orszag.”

  14. Happy Holidays, BB and everyone! Hug each other tight. I’m grateful for this site and the luminescent souls that dance upon it. Thank you.

  15. The undermining of political franchise first in 2000 and then in 2008 was disillusioning, but the renewed independence that has been born out of that has been inspiring.

With much appreciation for all the news and views and virtual community over here–A very merry Christmas, or Whatever makes you Happy, to all.

  16. Merry Christmas everyone!

I too lurked here, and at all the PUMA-oriented blogs, beginning right around the time of the sham Unity event in NH. I loved the PUMA moniker and it described to a T my reasons for “crossing the aisle”, which I saw as a temporary, one-time move to claim my vote. Now, who knows. I hope there is a new way for us to have a collective impact on government.

I’m a late bloomer politically; as an artist / designer I preferred being in my own world, which was easy for me in the 80′s and 90′s. I voted straight dem ticket and felt that was my contribution. As a feminist to the core however, this “election” was a huge wake up call. I volunteered hours/months for HRC and began writing to delegates, dnc, etc. TC is one of a few blogs that I visit now, and I love it.

  17. Thank you all for a site that has helped me stay sane. Honest and intelligent. And terrific writing. Happy Holidays to all.

  18. Without the Conflucian Community I don’t know what we would have done. It’s a warm and inviting place to come in from the political cold. Thanks to everyone and a Joyous Christmas to all!

  19. Best to you, BB! Thanks for the warm message on Christmas Eve.

We’ve been called PUMA as if we were a “cult of personality.” I say we are a cult of clarity – welcoming people whose eyes are wide open (to paraphrase you).

    • We are a clarion call: women’s rights are human rights, civil rights are human rights, lgbt rights are human rights, universal healthcare is human rights, and the right to a meaningful vote is human rights.

  20. Joseph Cannon has a wonderful post up–a parody of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

  21. Merry Christmas to all Confucians!

This continues to be a truth-to -power kind of place, which makes it my kind of place. I don’t recall how I first found this site, but it continuously supported me while many friends went ’round the bend on the Obot bandwagon.

So here’s a thank you, even though you east coasters probably have plenty of classical music to listen to. In Portland our community supported non commercial classical station is doing some very lovely 24/7 Christmas music through midnight on 12/25….a nice background for baking, wrapping, and staying mellow through the hassle.

Just go to http://www.allclassical.org and click on ‘listen now’.

  22. Great post BB- as usual.

TC has been my Christmas gift since spring of ’08 – I can’t imagine getting through the mess the DNC has created without it.

The front pagers here are wonderful and some of the regulars are brilliant too.

BTW – whatever happened to SM?

    Thanks :)

  23. Merry Christmas BB and Conflucians!!!

  24. Merry Christmas to all Conflucians !!!!

And a big thank you from the heart, to all the moderators here, for their hard work in keeping this place, an open and pleasant space to be.

Buon Natale e Auguri per la Vigilia!
On Xmas Eve here they all eat fish.
In Helsinki they have porridge with one almond in it-who finds the almond gets a wish. ;-)

  25. II think it is telling that Glover had to take a swipe at Hillary Clinton while criticizing BO. Dissatisfied as Glover may be about BO, he still is not confronting the basic flaws that BO has always had and always will.

BO has only ever taken care of himself throughout his illustrious career. The same can be said of GWB.

Hillary Clinton is a person of a completely different caliber who has taken her life’s lessons to heart to work to move the American people forward.

    • Yup. The Obots just can’t help themselves.

    • Maybe it’s just me, but Glover’s comment didn’t bother me. I know he’s not a Hillary fan. But, not everybody is going to be a fan of her, and people shouldn’t have to be fans of hers to see what’s going on with our country right now. I think it’s an encouraging sign that despite endorsing Obama (originally an Edwards supporter) he’s able to speak up and say that the current administration is continuing Bush policies.

Now the part about “what choices does he have”… that’s the predictable meme going around right now. I’ve heard some version of this “blame the system, not Obama” from Yglesias, Krugman, Carl “Cankles” Bernstein, etc. All but perhaps Krugman among them would have excoriated Hillary had her only defense been that America was ungovernable.

    • That’s really interesting, because Glover was an early Hillary supporter.

    • I agree with you. They have to constantly take swipes at Hillary. It’s the same as when they would say something positive about Hillary but they HAD to say something positive about Obama. It is strange. It’s almost like they won’t bring Obama down or up without taking Hillary along with him.

  26. Happy Holidays, everyone. I rarely post, but I read this site every day. I’m so glad you’re here.

  27. Merry Christmas, Conflucians.

  28. I’m like Riverbird, rarely post, but come here every day – since the beginning. Thank you all for your wonderful talent and the obvious intelligence and true caring that is displayed in every post. And thanks to all the regular commenters. Merry Christmas to all! (And don’t ever stop!)

    • I rarely post too but have visited, read, laughed and referred countless people here since the beginning and am very thankful for this place. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!

  29. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all Conflucians. Thank you all for wonderful postings, stories, and support. This site is an oasis of common sense and reality in the blogosphere.

  30. I, too, check in most every day, but rarely post. Thank you for being a refuge of sanity, righteous indignation, and occasional raucous humor. I don’t know what I would have done without you all over the past year and a half since I found you.

Merry Christmas to all Conflucians, front pagers, regular commenters and lurkers alike, and most especially to my “neighbor,” bostonboomer.

  31. happy holidays to y’all!!!

I’ve been extremely time-challenged but I check the morning post and links with my coffee every day before work (sometimes it makes me late!)

I’m grateful to all of you – posters and commenters – and wish you only the best for 2010!

  32. Another rare poster and faithful visitor here. Thank you all, for all you do. Greetings of the season to all.

  33. It is wonderful to hear from those who stop here frequently or every day and do not post never or hardly ever. That adds another special dimension to TC—knowing that there are people silently reading, nodding, smiling and supporting. Somehow that feels very special to me and I thank all of you for being there throughout the year and for taking this special season to let us know that you are there and you are with us.

    • Always. We may not speak out loud, mainly because you regular commenters always express exactly what we are thinking, but we are here.

  34. Please allow me to interrupt the holiday cheer for a moment.

Knoxville over at FDL has nailed things. The passage of the godawful Senate bill is Obama’s “Mission Accomplished” moment.

    http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/20703

That’s now out of the way.

Merry Christmas, everybody! Enjoy the long weekend.

    • Good points

The fact is that this bill, this monstrosity that is still oddly called health care reform, though it is not, creates a huge liability for Obama, who has, in fact, made all the bad actors in the pharmaceutical and insurance industries his political partners. The

      • Remember catastrophic insurance. It was repealed due to an outcry by seniors. So, is there HOPE for CHANGE as things unfold?

(HOWEVER, the catastrophic insurance bill was actually a bill with good intentions and made some sense, as hard as it is to belief that Reagan actually engineered something that made sense–Democrats engneered the “outcry”…just like Republicans do…and that was back in the 80′s….I wish I had caught on then!!…I’ve done research on this whole thing but never wrote the post…maybe I should even at this late date?)

  35. Which one of you girlz hit the pope? Thought RD is in NJ.

  36. Knoxville over at FDL has nailed things. The passage of the godawful Senate bill is Obama’s “Mission Accomplished” moment.
    **********
The problem with that analogy is that the true screw job of “Mission Accomplished, I did what no other President could do in the past 100 years” is that the full effect of the insurance Scam won’t happen until 2016.

  37. Happy Holidays or Joyful Whatever you celebrate, or don’t celebrate, you guys. Thanks so much for everything, each and every one of you.

PS–where the heck’s the clown? Riverdaugher and he are like Big Bird and Snuffy, we never see the two of them in the same room at the same time….;)

  38. Sorry to butt in OT…but if anyone wants to track Santa, go to noradsanta.org. He’s in Sweden right now. I’m 49 and I still love Santa. Got to go watch as he works his way here. Merry Christmas to you all!

  39. Happy holidays to everyone and many thanks for your posts, links, comments and hefty dose of sanity (not to mention occasional snark)!

    djmm

  40. Happy Holidays!!!!

  41. Popping in to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Blessed Solstice, and Joyous Winter Whatever to all my peeps here.

You guys have been a light in the political darkness, and I thank you all for your wit, your insight, your rants, your observations, your fury, your humor, your principles, your questioning, your doubts, your rejection of groupthink, and your love for this country. The world is a better place because of you all.

  42. Late to the list but a very special thank you to the diarists, the mods, the commenters and those who just read and support. Merry Christmas all.

  43. “the puma label was twisted into things we had never intended, so we don’t use it anymore. ”

so what did it get twisted into ??? mabey i missed something??

      • I’ve asked myself that too boogie. Maybe it’s just that I don’t go on too many other sites, and I just don’t know. (It seems Hillary is 44 has gone very Republican, and so has Hillbuzz.)

Anyway Merry Christmas to you, too.

    • Jake Tapper is replacing George S this Sunday morning on ABC. You’ve been invited for a 10 minute segment to define the Puma movement and organization to America. Who is it, how big is it, what do you plan to accomplish in the coming year. How would you make that case.

  44. Hey everyone, hope your holiday is great!

We’re not doing Anything….which for me is great…having a quiet day!!

It’s a relief to have cut out of the entire Christmas madness…

But, that’s just us, now that we’re just two old ladies…

I did enjoy it all when I was younger…

I see a woman knocked the Pope down…well, frankly…I sort of enjoyed that! Esp. in light of the hatchet job being done on women by the Democrats and Obama.

  45. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, bostonboomer. And happy holidays to all Conflucians.
