Thursday Morning News and Views: Thanksgiving Day Edition

Happy Thanksgiving, Conflucians! I’m on my own today, so I thought I’d put up some news links for anyone else who happens to be around. My brother, sister-in-law and nephews went to Indiana for Thanksgiving with the rest of the family, so I won’t be dining with them. I could have gone to Indiana too, but I really needed some rest and time to myself over my short break. So I’m going to spend the day being grateful for what I have. I bought myself Thanksgiving dinner fixings from Whole Foods so I don’t feel too deprived.

It’s a gloomy day here in the Boston area. It was very foggy when I first got up and the fog still hasn’t cleared. What am I grateful for? I have a roof over my head, clothes to wear, enough to eat, books to read, and a teaching job for the time being anyway. I’m grateful that I completed by Ph.D. and have some time to read novels now. I’m very grateful to have this five-day weekend to rest up for final push at the end of the semester. And I’m grateful for The Confluence and all of you who come here to discuss politics with other disillusioned liberals.

So what’s the latest news? The New York Times has the latest on the couple who crashed President Obama’s first state dinner. It figures there’s a reality TV connection:

…the couple — Michaele Salahi and her husband, Tareq — are Virginians who have been auditioning for a possible role in a different housewives TV franchise: “The Real Housewives of Washington.”

They swept past the camera crews and followed the trail of other bigwigs attending the dinner.

But neither Mr. nor Mrs. Salahi, best known in the Washington area for promoting wine and polo in Virginia, were on the guest list for the event, a fact first reported Wednesday morning on the Washington Post Web site.

A White House official confirmed Wednesday that the Salahis had not been invited nor seated for dinner.

Apparently yesterday was “International Violence against Women Day.” I missed that: UN officials call for intensified efforts to eliminate violence against women

In Great Britain, there are plans to educate school children about domestic violence: I couldn’t find any statement from President Obama about “International Violence Against Women Day,” but I’m sure he made one [snark]. However Secretary of State Hillary Clinton didn’t forget the day:

“Today, a woman somewhere in the United States will be physically assaulted by her husband. In a remote village on the other side of the world, traffickers will lure a young girl away from her family and sell her into sexual slavery. In towns in every region of the globe, groups of men will harass young women as they attempt to go to school. And in a conflict-ravaged land, armed men will brutally rape a mother and her daughter, part of a deliberate strategy of war. Today and every day, women and girls all over the world will face violence simply because they are female. This gender-based violence not only harms the victims and their families, it shreds the fabric that weaves us together as human beings.

“Violence against women cannot be accepted as ‘cultural’ — it is criminal. Today, as we mark Elimination of Violence Against Women Day, let us recommit ourselves – men and women in every country – to work together to end these atrocities, to hold those who commit them accountable, and to support the survivors. No woman or girl anywhere in the world should have to walk in fear or live under the threat of violence.

Thank you Madame Secretary. I’m grateful today that you are working in our government and doing your best to support women in the U.S. and around the world.

In other violence against women news, Roman Polanski will be released on bail soon.

Legal experts say the bail probably will lengthen the battle over whether Polanski should be extradited to Los Angeles to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old more than three decades ago. The decision also raises other questions, given that Polanski fled from the United States just before his sentencing in 1978. Swiss justice officials repeatedly have denied his bail requests, saying he is a flight risk.

Under the terms of the bail, Polanski, 76, would be restricted to his chalet in Gstaad, a ski resort with mountain views. The village of 2,500 has long been known as a celebrity hangout, having been home to Elizabeth Taylor, Roger Moore and David Niven, among others.

The Swiss court decided to grant bail based on Polanski’s pledge of $4.5-million bail along with what the court called supporting measures, including electronic monitoring, which would alert the authorities if he tried leave home or remove a monitoring bracelet.

“It is very rare to get bail in an extradition case and especially in cases where the person’s fled,” said Laurie Levenson, a former federal prosecutor and Loyola law professor. “This is a little like giving bail to O.J. after the Bronco chase.”

At least he spent some time in captivity. That may be the worse that will ever happen to him for raping and sodomizing a child.

This is really serious and yet I’ve heard little protest from liberals. Maybe I’ve just missed it somehow: Comcast may be close to buying NBC Universal

…after Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Immelt met with NBC’s minority owner Vivendi SA, two people with knowledge of the situation said….

Immelt is negotiating a value for NBC Universal to persuade Paris-based Vivendi to sell its 20 percent stake and let GE push ahead with plans to sell a controlling interest to Comcast, the largest U.S. cable-TV service. They are less than $500 million apart and are discussing how much cash Vivendi may receive before the Comcast deal is completed, the people said.

Vivendi’s deliberations are the key to GE’s plans to create a joint venture combining NBC Universal’s film, cable-television and theme-park properties with networks owned by Philadelphia- based Comcast. Comcast would own 51 percent and may acquire full ownership over time. Vivendi may still decide not to sell.

I noticed there isn’t even the slightest discussion of news or journalism in the article. Whatever happened to the antitrust laws anyway?

Sarah Palin actually said something about the possibility of running for President, and Think Progress, and I assume other prog blogs, are drooling at the opportunities they will have to smear, deride, and degrade Palin in the years to come. I’m so happy that the progs will have something to be grateful for today.

In football, the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers at 12:30PM. The game is on Fox. Then at 4:15, myiq2xu’s beloved Oakland Raiders travel to the Dallas Cowboys–that matchup will be televised on CBS. Finally, at 8:20PM, the New York Giants will play the Denver Broncos in Denver on the NFL Network. For myiq’s sake I hope the Raiders win.

  1. Thanks very much for the roundup and Happy Thanksgiving, bostonboomer!

  2. Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving! Just dropped my cranky youngest daughter off a the airport and had my thanksgiving sushi dinner last night!

Hope it’s a good one for every one and that whatever blesses you does so!

  3. Happy Thanksgiving from Indiana, bostonboomer!
It is a gloomy day here, too.

  4. bb: Happy T-day! Hope you’re feeling better.

I’m thankful my Mom is home from the hospital, for a little while. She’s doing really well, all things considered. Also thankful my friend is cooking a traditional meal and will be feeding both of us.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

    • Thanks, G-cat. I’m feeling a lot better. I still have a cold, but I should be fine by Monday. So glad for this break! I’m glad your Mom is home for the holiday!

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to all the wonderful people in the Conflucian community. As I count my blessings this year, meeting all of you in this virtual space will definitely be on the list.

Enjoy your feasts, hug your family members and tell them you love them, and know how special each of you are.

    SoD

  6. Boomer! I wish I knew you were on your own today. I would have invited you to jump in your car and join us! ((then again, you probably would not be interested in tofurky!)) :)

    • That’s so sweet. I’ve never had tofurky, but I heard it’s pretty good. Did you get those brussels sprouts?

      • yep! I’m excited to try them. I had all of the other ingredients in Joanelle’s recipe.

        • I’m in the midst of cooking the feast but had to pop in to wish everyone here at TC a happy Thanksgiving and hope that you all have much to be grateful for this year – Gee, BB had I known you were on your own you could have come to NNJ and shared our holiday with us –
My sprouts are done SOD – covered with foil to keep em warm – my daughter-in-law will be particularly thrilled she’s a Brussels spout junkie – if there is such a thing.

  7. This is nice. Shaquille O’Neal paid for murder victim Shaniya Davis’ funeral.

    http://ow.ly/164xAT

    • It’s nice to see celebs doing something decent with all that money. Shaq’s really well known around here for helping lots of people and I really have a lot of respect for him.

  8. Happy Thanksgiving BB-have a nice day resting.

And to all TCers of course :-)

(I just bought some brussels sprouts to try Joanelle’s recipe too)

  9. I can’t remember the last time the Raiders won two games in a row. I’ll be thankful if they play well.

  10. Happy Thanksgiving from the home of Thomas Jefferson! I hope everyone has a great turkey day! Well, except for the poor turkeys.

Here’s a fun news item. Apparently a higher court took a stab at reducing some of the draconian power the government has had since Bush II to eavesdrop on you via your digital connection to the world. But as we all knew the sort of person he was from day one, Bush III is working hard to undo that:

    • Happy Thanksgiving Dandy!

    • did you know Thomas Jefferson refused to do thanksgiving proclamations during his 8 years as president?

      • During the eight years that Thomas Jefferson was President, he refused to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation.

In a letter to the Rev. Mr. Miller, he gave his reasons for refusing:

“I consider the Government of the United States as interdicted by the Constitution of the United States from meddling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises…. But it is only proposed that I should recommend, not prescribe, a day of fasting and praying. That is, I should indirectly assume to the United States an authority over religious exercises, which the Constitution has directly precluded them from…. Every one must act according to the dictates of his own reason and mine tells me that civil powers alone have been given to the President of the United States, and no authority to direct the religious exercises of his constituents.”

        • Tommy was quite a guy. We like our other two local presidents fine, Monroe and Madison, but Tommy is the man around these parts.

          • I throw back drinks at Vaughn’s with a gggg grandson of Monroe … I’m still wondering if you live on my family’s old homestead since their land abutted Jefferson’s

          • If not I can probably see it from here. I’ll drink a toast to them as well as to mine. As well as to all of us here today.

        • Thomas Jefferson, in his infinite wisdom (!), on American women in contrast to French women:

” [ American women] have the good sense to value domestic happiness above all other…Our good ladies, I trust, have been too wise to wrinkle their foreheads with politics. They are contented to soothe and calm the minds of their husbands returning from political debate.”

          • No surprise given the context of the times. He did have slaves as well and had children with (at least) Sally Hemings (which may or may not have been rape). So in today’s terms he would be considered quite a horrible person. As would pretty much every leader of note throughout history.

          • I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama included that same sentiment in a speech.

          • It appears he lives by that sentiment if you look at the role Michelle is given and the events of the primary as well as the past. If he said those very words I wouldn’t be in the least surprised.

  11. If Polanski jumps bail they should give the whole $4.5 million to his victim.

That wouldn’t be legal but it sure would be the right thing to do.

  12. Excellent roundup! I hope you guys all have a nice day.

  13. BB — the picture of those two turkeys looks like a picture my daughter took several years ago of two turkeys that walked across our lawn and up our street one year (I think I wrote about the story last year.)

  14. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

  15. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I had to be creative here because my daughter wanted something, anything resembling Thanksgiving.

Fortunately, on Saturday we will celebrate with about 75 other expatriates living in this area.

  16. “Elimination of Violence Against Women” day video

  17. Happy T Day everyone!!!

    • Happy Thanksgiving to you, Dead Girl! Don’t be a stranger.

      • I wish I had more time, I had to go back to my creative class lifestyle after dark, to regain my sanity and perspective, and my friends and our lifestyle take up most of my time now.

But I try to keep up as much as possible from time to time. Miss you and TC bunches!

  18. MA Blue, where are you now?

  19. Neat, we have zip cars at UVA now:
    http://www.zipcar.com/uva/
Maybe I should get a teaching job just so I can use them.

I think that’s a sign Dakinikat, time to “come home” to Charlottesville. :-)

    • I dunno, Steven Mather is sending me all these job openings in Canada. Maybe I need to re-acclimatize to the Great White North!

      • what is going on down in NOLA for you Daki, that has you looking elsewhere?

        • Bobby Jindal our idiot governor has announced the state is graduating about 10,000 too many four year college students and he’s trying to cut all the budgets of all the universities by 1/3. I moved universities already to one with a growing student body thinking it would be better but now he’s governor, it’s terrible. They are furloughing us, they’ve cut our match on our pensions, and it’s just going to get worse. I’ve got too valuable of a degree to spend it where the governor thinks you CAN have too many college graduates and just cuts things without thinking …

          • too many idiot Republicans down here voting for him out there in the hinter parishes

          • Maybe he’s afraid if they get edjacated they’ll vote Democrat.

          • I am back to my old pug hatin’… I have not been this ’sgusted since Rotten Ronnie perhaps… so what I think about this is unfit to print…

          • The other issue, out here in Merkademia, is the flourishing of the Life Sciences, at the expense of the Humanities… tis the ascension of the DNA gods, and the receding of the Liberal Arts… and its not graceful, and looking more like a blood bath than a sea change, with each passing day.

At H. they think its cool to pound on the oldster faculty nowadays. Albeit there are dinosaurs in the ranks, its just wrong to hate on oldsters for being old. The pro. schools there just want to kill off the all-powerful Faculty of Arts and Sciences that deposed Larry da Mouf. To be replaced by Life Sciences academics. no doubt…

      • Hard to argue with out of the country frankly.

      • I highly recommend Canada.

  20. Happy Thanksgiving, Conflucians! Wishing all the best to you and yours.

  21. Happy Thanksgiving from Down Under! Wish I were celebrating up there.

  22. I just heard from my middle child. He grew up in Central California and then moved to Olympia Washington. Apparently the winters weren’t cold enough for him so he moved to Maine.

He now knows why Stephen King set most of his stories there.

  23. A big bright Turkey Day to one and all. Here in So Cal on the edge of the Colorado Desert it is a brilliant blue and gorgeous 75 degree day. Just a touch of breeze and I have the patio table set for a T Day feast. But our feast is going to be totally vegetarian today so here’s to a turkey somewhere that may live to see another day. I am thankful for all of you, for good health, for my short bicycle ride this am, for palm trees, bougainvillea and strange but weirdly beautiful cactus and a whole lot more.

  24. May you all have a wonderful day filled with love, family, friends and good food… Wishes to all TC folks!

  25. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

  26. I hope everyone is having a wonderful Thanksgiving!

BB, thank you VERY much for posting this. I’ve been almost paralyzed by my shoulder since last night and never did get to it.

    • Hope you’re on the mend. Have a wonderful T-day yourself!

      • I’m about ready to find a shoulder specialist – if there IS such a thing. Supposedly it’s a bone-spur but, my doctor didn’t think there was/is much that can be done for it. I really don’t know what to do.

        • A shoulderless hug for you.

        • So sorry, hope it clears itself up right away.

        • Look for a physical-medicine specialist: they are also called physiatrists (no, not psychiatrists!) and rehabilitation medicine physicians. There is always something that can be done to help improve functioning, even if it can’t be cured completely.

Hope the condition gets better soon!

  27. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE FROM COLD RAINY OHIO.
but have lots to be grateful for one is this place and all my friends here

    hugs to all

  28. Happy Thanksgiving from cold rainy Oregon…
I’m grateful for TC: thanks for bringing voices of reason to an insane world, and providing an amazing forum for discussion.

  29. I don’t know if anyone posted this photo earlier but here is a better photo of what Hillary wore at the State Dinner. She’s standing with BO and MO.

  30. Happy Thanksgiving!

    still cooking…..
made two pies — one pumpkin and one?
    rum raisin custard!

    invented it!

    xxoo!

giving thanks to Confluence of great people…

    recipe was

    one pie crust

    I cup of milk
    I cup half and half
    3 eggs
    big splash vanilla
    bigger splash Meyer’s Rum
    about 1/4 cup golden raisins
    1/4 teaspoon salt

    Rico would have loved it….

    we’ll see…

    • I can smell that rum roasting pie—-yum!

    • Oooh; think I’ll try that. Do you serve it with a splash of rum on top, set flaming?

    • did you soak the raisins in the rum?

    • I forgot to put half cup sugar!

It really turned out no kidding!

all the raisins landed on the bottom and the custard floated to the top — it was unreal –!

      (you could have flamed it!)

      xxoo!

      it really turned out

pie crust was out of M. Stewart pies & tarts

don’t forget the sug if you try — I used white but, you could have used brown also

      • didn’t soak raisins but, they sort of fell to the bottom and they must have been soaking the whole time that pie was cooking because they seemed to meld with the bottom crust?

        in their own layer?

I am so worried for RD you guys.
        Happy after Thanksgiving

I am so worried for our country
