Sunday Morning at the Confluence Bed & Breakfast

Good Morning and Happy Sunday Conflucians.  This morning’s breakfast is served in bed.  The coffee beans have been freshly ground, the muffins are still warm from the oven, and Rico added a shot of something special to that strawberry smoothie.  So get comfy, adjust yourself under those covers, and enjoy this delightful tray of goodies as you peruse the morning news.  Oops!  Don’t worry about that tiny spill.  Just make yourself at home.

OK, let’s get started.  What better way than to start off with some…

Hillary Clinton News

Vogue has an interesting profile of Hillary Clinton this month.  Some of the excerpts are wonderfully revealing yet comfortingly confirming our general sense about this incredible woman.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: Her Brilliant Career.

When she walks into one of the many grand diplomatic reception rooms on the eighth floor of “the Building,” as everyone calls the State Department, she is clutching a big mug of milky coffee and is wearing no makeup. She looks tired and cranky. She is about to tape three I’m-sorry-I-can’t-be-with-you-here-this-evening videos for events she can’t attend. This is obligatory drudge work, to be sure, but it’s drudgery that requires her to suck it up and find that extra gear: She must be on. Clinton says hello to the group—not her usual effervescent eye-popping hello but a barely mustered blanket nicety. She sits where she is told, facing a teleprompter, and her ever-present and very chic deputy chief of staff, Huma Abedin, hands her a small case filled with cosmetics. Holding a compact, Clinton puts on mascara, lipstick, blush, and a little powder. She yanks her jacket straight, affixes her mic, and signals she is ready by sitting up and staring directly into the camera. And—click!—just like that, the public Hillary appears: upbeat, reassuring, in control, wide awake, means business. She nails all three videos in one take. Done. Next.

The Economy

Unemployment rose in 29 states last month. Yep, it’s still the economy stupid.

Joblessness rose in 29 U.S. states last month compared with 22 in September, the Labor Department said today in Washington. Michigan had the highest jobless rate at 15.1 percent, followed by Nevada at 13 percent and Rhode Island at 12.9 percent.

The national rate last month reached a 26-year high of 10.2 percent, weighing on consumer spending that accounts for about 70 percent of the economy. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said Nov. 17 that joblessness “likely will decline only slowly,” a reason policy makers will keep interest rates near zero to ensure growth is sustained.

“We’ve had a surprisingly sharp jump in the jobless rate,” said Richard DeKaser, president of Woodley Park Research in Washington. “Businesses have truly been doing an extraordinary job of wringing out productivity from the labor force.”

Hey, even God deserves a little procedural due process.  Senator Suing God Urges Judge to Proceed: Court Could Throw Suit Out Because of Failure to Serve Notice on God.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers says his lawsuit against God might seem funny but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a serious point.

(SNIP)

The court told Chambers last week that his lawsuit may be dismissed because he had failed to serve notice on God. Chambers acknowledged that failure in court Tuesday while sitting a few feet away from an empty table reserved for God and God’s attorney.

“Despite my most sincere, zealous efforts, I could not find a location to serve the defendant,” Chambers said.

    • As I understand it, the “burkha Barbie” isn’t being marketed by the toy company. It’s part of an art/fashion show by someone independent of the manufacturer. (Not, mind you, that Barbie has ever been anything but a male fantasy anyway, so the company’s hardly guiltless. Maybe it just hasn’t thought of the sex-object-in-a-bag before.)

  3. Triggerz! Because it makes sense to go with the Republican version of a public option after 8 years of Republican incompetence and malfeasance.

    • Followed in zombie rhythm by 11 months of Dem incompetence and malfeasance neatly forecast by two stunning congressional years of a Dem congressional majority fumbling and following Republican incompetence and malfeasance leadership. They eat cake; we get the garbage crumb bits.

    • Even better, the mandate occurs a year before the pre-existing conditions ban does. Are all those folks fined because insurance companies won’t cover them? from corrente.

  5. “First Female American Indian Doctor”

Profile America — Sunday, November 22nd. As the celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month continues, the accomplishments of many pioneering men and women of the past are being honored. One of these is Susan La Flesche, an Omaha Indian from Nebraska, who became the first female American Indian physician in 1889. After graduating at the head of her class at the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, La Flesche returned to Nebraska, where she married, raised a family and built the first Indian hospital in the state.

More than three-quarters of American Indians and Alaska Natives 25 and older have a high school diploma. And 13 percent have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in college.

  6. Our Rockstar finally gets a well deserved journalistic accolade. I loved and adored the Vogue article and totally appreciate the link. That article communicates what is at the heart of my HRC devotion: this woman is brilliant, she is above all else a problem solver and she is indefatigable; she is a great human being.

    • I definitely second that. I don’t know how she perseveres, but she does. Her sense of service is deeply ingrained.

    • This article made my day! Even though we often feel that things are no different than they were under Bush, the view of America by people in other countries is improving quite a bit. And this is mainly due to the indefatigable Hillary Rodham Clinton. I am so proud to have her as the chief diplomat of the USA. (I’d much rather have her as commander in cheif, though)

    • She is simply amazing and the perfect role model for women and girls everywhere.

      • hummmm NOT exactly — as much as I love the woman and admire her — she is still working FOR HIM!

And that is the message that a whole lot of girls are getting –

KNOW YOUR PLACE — working for a him.

        • She blooms where she’s planted. She’s really working for US, not HIM. At least I believe that’s how she sees it.

        • Who else is she supposed to work for? There ain’t nothing but hims. It’s pretty much either work for hims or don’t work at all.

          • In the long run she could do more for women and the women of the world if she established a foundation of some sort and worked full time on those issues.

Right now she is carrying out the wishes of an incompetent jerk who will undermine her at his whim. And in the end he will probably destroy her ability to bring positive changes for women of the world in the future.

She is being used. She is still the role model for the ideal brilliant 19th century female.

I am super happy that she is “blooming” — but the message to women is to STFU and stay in your place — do not make waves.

The democrat party should be allowed to die — that is the party of Andrew Jackson — a murdering b@astard.

          • Seriously — from now on I will ignore you. It is obvious that for some reason (probably because you are a New Englander) — you hate my West Coast Rural practical temperament.

          • Um… okay. :) I don’t actually hate your Temprament, know anything about it or have any opinion about it. You do whatever you want.

    • There should be a small early reader in schools so they are aware of such a wonderful role mode that HRC is. It would also serve to encourage school work and civic volunteering by students.

  7. Anyone like to take a look at the Selected Characteristics of Baby Boomers 42 to 60 Years Old in 2006?

    http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/age/general-age.html#bb

Baby boomers as a generation have been outnumbered by the 18-44 year olds (26%-34%).
Explains why Obama went after them-or not?

    • Interesting perspective on these data is the way the gender numbers play out with females dramatically outnumbering males in the 60+ crowd. The problem for any politician is the delta in political participation of these age groups. This was a huge factor in both NJ and VA; the drop in voter turn-out for the young and the restless made all the difference, especially coupled with the similar drop in AA and Hispanic turnout. I guess the good thing about us old folks is that we do show up at the polls. With medicare cuts kicking in immediately in the new health care legislation, that political fact probably won’t change.

Big question? Will the young and the restless turn out for 0 in 2012 when their age group is the hardest hit by unemployment?

      • Two points. First, will the DNC want those disillusioned, unemployed people voting?? They need to be careful what they wish for. Second, PUMAs and other old bitter formerly DNC voters would have come out in full to vote in 2012, but since they did not need us in 2008 they treated us like we were disposable. Bad move on their part.

    • Thanks for that Laurie!

  8. I clearly remember the first term of Bush 2 and the economic recession at that time. I remember the weekly unemployment reports that showed a trend line of job losses and eventually weak job growth. That was hurting Bush and Repubs as much or more than the wars. How could Dems forget—it is not even the economy stupid, it is JOBS. JOBS are what make all politics local.

    • They noticed he got reelected, so they care exactly as much. That is, not at all. And similarly, they care about Dems in general exactly as much as Bush2 cared about Repubs in general. They’re kind of the same, it’s about them only.

    • They’ve done nothing about jobs. But I suppose that from now on Obama will insist that every single thing he does is about jobs-like the China trip.

      http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=16152

      • It was a rhetoric-driven campaign, and now it’s a rhetoric-driven administration. The problem with that is during a campaign, it’s all about promises. When you are governing, it’s all about results.

        • Exactimento. Up next, the economic wh summit—now there is a real results oriented effort for you.

  9. Wow-that video of the Swedish staircase is FUN!!!

  10. Good Morning all. That video is sweet. People are naturally drawn to creativity.

Speaking of the economy: I saw a piece this morning on food banks. Currently 47 million people “do not know where there next meal is coming from.” That is 1 in 6. A large percentage of those people are children. How can the Wall St. gluttons look at themselves in the mirror?

    • Wish they could all find their way to the WH for Christmas. The guy who occupies that house doesn’t seem to be able to get a feel for how horrible conditions in this country are right now.

      • I am assuming that your “they” are the 46 million who don’t know where the next meal is coming from and not the Wall Streeters, who probably will be at the WH for Christmas—who appear to own the place—just rent it out to the pol of their choice every 4 years or so.

      • He never even helped that Kenyan school that was named after him. Even if its photo-op went round the world.

    • Hunger in America like this is a scandal of epic proportions. Ditto for the homelessness that too often accompanies it.

  11. President Obama has developed tin ear in reform debate

The Senate moved forward on the $848 billion health-care bill this weekend. It wasn’t thanks to its chief cheerleader, Barack Obama, but in spite of him.

What a mess he’s made of the politics here.

Or maybe the president has hired only tin-eared political operatives.

That’s pretty depressing if you, like me, are still hopeful about Obama – despite plummeting poll numbers, his coddling of Wall Street, his Hamlet routine in Afghanistan and this latest debacle.

It’s even more depressing if you, like me, think a public option is needed to keep insurance costs from bankrupting us.

    http://bostonherald.com/news/columnists/view.bg?articleid=1213665&srvc=news&position=4

    • Those kind of journalists expressing surprise and wanting to believe in Barack’s sincerity over HCR seem so disingenuous.
His acts as an Illinois Senator dismembering HCR seem unknown to them.

      • Margery Eagan is like a combination of Peggy Noonan and MoDo. Disingenuous and clueless are kind of understatements when it comes to her.

  12. “We’ve had a surprisingly sharp jump in the jobless rate,”

My God, is there anyone who was surprised by continually rising joblessness outside of the loons in Versailles? It’s not like anyone has tried to do anything about it, after all. Sheesh!

    • Well this really sucks
      h/t Corrente

The mandate can be found in Section 5000A. It kicks in a year before the pre-existing exclusion exclusion does. Each month an individual goes without insurance, he or she is taxed, to be reported on his or her tax return, 1/12 of something that will be called the Applicable Dollar amount which has been set at $750 with some restrictions and limitations, a phase-in provision and a cost of living adjustment. It’s pretty convoluted, so if you do your own taxes because you cannot afford either an accountant or insurance, you’ll really have a problem.

    • I prefer 2) at this point.

It least we know what we’re getting.

    • It will pass easily without a public option- what I thought would always happen.

      Mandated insurance without any advantage.

      • And no cost controls.

      • Unless the “Progressive Caucus” stands by their letter and votes No on the bill without a public option. I put the chances of that happening at about 1% and that’s the optimistic view.

    • I’m voting for nothing at this point and I have a pre-existing condition that would basically throw me out of the pool. I’d rather just stick every one else with my primary care coming from the emergency room under these conditions if I didn’t have my group plan from university.

    • we will get wealthcare

  13. Jeralyn:

Major Nidal Hasan had his first hearing in the Ft. Hood murder case. The hearing was held in the hospital. His lawyer says he is paralyzed from the chest down, incontinent and in severe pain.

    [...]

How barbaric that the military will seek to kill a man with no sensation in his body from the chest down. He might prefer it (I certainly would) but it’s inexusable behavior for a civilized society and way beyond the pale of decency.

That reminds me of when Lyle and Eric Menendez asked for clemency because they were orphans.

    • J’s a real piece of work. Orphan or twinky defense whatever.

    • I don’t understand the excuse angle either. I’m against the death penalty, so that’s my angle, but I don’t understand the lame ass thing about well, while he was massacring all those people, he got a boo boo, so we need to treat him better. JM is a puzzle.

      • I’ll support the death penalty when it is uniformly applied and the criminal justice system is mistake-proof.

        • ‘zactly. that’s what always frustrated me about the Kantian categorical imperative theories relative to the death penalty. His assumptions were always based on the accuracy of the guilty charge.

          • My problem with the death penalty is the amount of mistake we have seen, in addition to the fact that prosecutors who asked for it would do ANYTHING to win.

I think life in prison without the possibility of parole is a much tougher punishment.

          • And statistics bear out that life imprisonment is in fact cheaper than death penalties when appeals processes costs are factored in.

    • How does she know the prosecution will ask for the death penalty?

    • I want him to live because the last thing anyone needs is a martyr . Let him live paralyzed and in pain knowing he ain’t gonna get 72 virgins but maybe 72 military care givers with a long memories.

      • Exactly.

If his rampage was politically and/or religiously motivated, by all means deny him status as a martyr.

If it wasn’t, and he was an otherwise average guy who snapped under intolerable tension between his service and his religion, then there’s hardly anything worse justice could do to him than make him live 30 or 40 years with the knowledge of his crime.

  15. Am I the only one who noticed that today is the 46th anniversary of the JFK assassination, Nov. 22, 1963? JFK was 46 years old when he died.

    • RIP to JFK. I’ve come to agree with you BB. He was the last best good one.

      • On the same day in 1963, C.S. Lewis died. On this day in 1997, Michael Hutchence of INXS died.

      • meh…Big Dawg was. He was the one they didn’t expect to win. He was a “throwaway” in that primary. But the unexpected happened. And the American people by and large recognized that they were better for being under this presidency.

        • Won’t argue the fact but it’s obvious that JFK’s generation of leadership is sorely missing from contemporary politics.

Hillary isn’t running for anything, so doesn’t count right now.

          • How about the “You Got Some Splainin To Do, Maria Maria” doll? GOP male entitlement bozos and Supreme Court confirmation hearing set sold separately.

          • Don’t forget the “barefoot and pregnant in an apron making a sandwich” Barbie. Barbie babies for her to carry on her hip are sold separately, but pots and pans are included.

There’s also a full line of “bedroom attire” called the “Chosen by Ken” line. Each outfit includes a set of 6″ “stilletos.

      • Yes, it is troubling considering how women even in the US have been killed for not toeing the line (Burqa line…extremism). Women’s Rights are clearly under attack and will continue to be as we have seen with women’s preventive care…

    • Dakinikat, read the newspaper article here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1229760/Its-Barbie-burka-World-famous-doll-gets-makeover-hammer-50th-anniversary.html

Mattel isn’t marketing a “Burqha Barbie” line. It’s part of an exhibit by an Italian designer. In all the outrage at Mattel, no one has bothered, apparently, to ask Eliana Lorena what she intends by including Burqha Barbie in a collection of dolls in a variety of national costumes. Maybe it is an attempt at PC gone gaga. Or maybe it’s intended as protest. We don’t know which, if either. Given that most of the cultures represented in the photo accompanying the article are determinedly male-supremacist (as is Barbie in all her incarnations) it’s possible to read this exhibit is not-so-subtly subversive.

Perhaps we should put the outrage on hold till we know, especially since this protest is being stirred up by some of the same folks who were behind the false story of the 400 child brides Hamas supposedly married to their adult fighters.

Too many politicians of both parties when they get to DC and the swamp gas gets them , forget who put them there and why they are there. Maybe big money can buy them like whores and they get to go to the cool parties but it can be taken away and they need to be reminded often of that fact.

  29. Mammogram controversy — excellent info on Dr. Susan Love’s website on the new guidelines:

    —snip—
“I have spent my entire career working in the breast cancer field. I want to find an end to this insidious disease. If I thought that these guidelines would harm women, I’d be the first person to speak out. These guidelines are just that—guidelines. The guidelines aren’t saying that women between 40-50 should never have a mammogram. Women under 50 who are high risk should have a more intensive screening program that includes mammography. Women younger or older than 50 who see or feel a change in their breast should have a mammogram or ultrasound so that the problem can be diagnosed.

“What they are saying is that a careful review of the scientific evidence shows that in younger women of average risk the risks outweigh the benefits of routine screening. Understandably, this is a shocking statement to hear, as it completely contradicts the “women should get an annual mammogram starting at age 40” recommendation that we’ve been hearing for the past decade.

“What many people don’t know is that this recommendation to extend screening to women under 50 was fraught with controversy. The decision was not based on evidence; it was based on political will. Virginia Ernster wrote an excellent article about this in the American Journal of Public Health in 1997. ”

    http://blog.dslrf.org/?p=116

    • “Women younger or older than 50 who see or feel a change in their breast should have a mammogram or ultrasound so that the problem can be diagnosed.

Dr. Love seems to have missed the committee’s recommendation that women stop doing self-exams.

The real problem is that insurance companies and Medicare will latch on to these guidelines as a way to refuse to cover mammograms for women under 50 and over 75.

  32. “Register exclusive: Iowa Poll shows Obama approval rating below 50 percent”

Obama’s victory in the Iowa caucuses was seen as the nominating campaign’s watershed moment, and it has given Iowa a disproportionate influence on the White House. Its staff is populated with former caucus campaign staffers….
Patrick Dillon, deputy White House political director, is a former top Iowa campaign aide and chief of staff. Dillon was in Iowa this weekend as Vice President Joe Biden headlined a state Democratic Party banquet

    • Read that with this-an article from early 2008:

“Update: Vote fraud at Iowa caucuses”
According to the poll worker, about 100 voters were expected by officials to show up. In 2004, only 80 voters showed up. So, the guess was a good one. In the end, 284 voters showed up.
Of those 284, more than 100 voters were new voters. Many of these voters came into the caucus at the very last minute, creating a line towards the front of the room. Officials quickly ushered everyone into the caucus before the assigned deadline time to close the doors and begin caucusing. According to the official, residence requirements for the new voters were not verified by officials. The voters were asked to sign in on a list and they did, many with illegible handwriting. snip
After the voting stopped, when everyone reached 15 percent that could, the Clinton campaign worker asked a precinct captain for a copy of all the new voter registrations so they could be checked against resident lists the Clinton campaign had to verify residency.
      The request was rejected.
Apparently, the process for checking these registrations is that the forms are sent to party officials on the county level and then sent to the auditor.

They were not submitted to an auditor, because the Dem county chair was an Obama supporter.

And now Obama’s WH staff is populated with former Iowa caucus campaign staffers.

      • Surprise surprise, Dubya 2 didn’t even win Iowa most likely along with most any other caucus. What a POS. What exactly do we expect from an asswipe and his supporters that stole an election. If he and they didn’t care about the voters and democracy then, why would he and they now care.

      • It probably didn’t take many “voters” to steal Iowa either.

      • This pattern was played out in most of the caucus states.

This description of what happened in that Iowa caucus is nearly identical to what I witnessed at my “small” rural caucus. In previous caucuses we would meet in an office of the Tribal office building. Less than a dozen of us would meet.

In February 2008 the 0bots flooded even the tiny precincts with ringers for 0bowma. I have never seen so many scribbled signatures on a caucus sign in sheet before. No one was checking to see if we were registered or if we lived in the district. Anyone could walk in — scribble down anything and then vote and bully.

0bowma gamed the caucus states. I’m still waiting to learn where he got the millions to train and prepare the troops to take over the caucuses.

Some of the professionals carried their backpacks — it was obvious that they were not from the area. These were trained, professional group agitators. Some of the ringers tried to fit in by wearing “country/rural” clothes. In the winter around here we wear sweatshirts and layers of clothes. The ringers were all wearing new sweatshirts –bought apparently to fit in with us local stupids.

  34. Interesting from McClatchy newspapers … Will Palin’s book tour jump-start a political movement?

Palin appears to have tapped into a powerful strain of populism fueled by dissatisfaction with the economy and by fear that the Democratic Party that’s running the country is made up of elites who aren’t listening, said Dennis Goldford, a professor of politics at Drake University in Iowa.

“A populist is against big, period,” Goldford said. “The populist basically says, ‘Look, big labor, big business, big government, they’re all trying to screw me, the little guy.’ That populism that she’s tapped into, it’s partly a politics of resentment. She’s very much somebody who bristles with all sorts of resentments.”

I know I’m a bit resentful of the big banksters. If you’re not, you may not be sentient.
