Our First Pacific President??

Our “smartest President ever” is a moron. From Politico:

Trying to reassure allies and rivals, President Barack Obama billed himself Saturday as “America’s first Pacific president,” promising the nations of Asia “a new era of engagement with the world based on mutual interests and mutual respect.”

“America’s first Pacific President” took office forty years ago, and his name was Richard Nixon.

Nixon was born in Yorba Linda and was raised there and in Whittier, California. Not only is California on the Pacific coast, but Orange County (which contains Yorba Linda) and Los Angeles County (which contains Whittier) are coastal counties.. Nixon attended Whittier College, left the state to go to Duke University School of Law, then returned to California to practice law in La Habra, which is also in Orange County.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor Nixon joined the United States Navy, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander while serving in the Pacific Theater. After the war he was elected to the House of Representatives from California’s 12th District and in 1950 he was elected to the Senate.

After serving two terms as Eisenhower’s Vice President and losing the Presidential election in 1960, Nixon returned to California where he ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1962.

While he was President he spent much of his time dealing with two East Asian nations – Vietnam and China. He also had a home in San Clemente that he called “Casa Pacifica” (dubbed “The Western White House” by the media) that sits above a popular surfing spot. When he died he was buried in Yorba Linda at the site of his Presidential Library.

Compare that to Obama: Born in Hawaii, raised in Hawaii and Indonesia, spent two years at Occidental College in California before transferring to Columbia. Since moving to New York at age 20 Obama has had little direct contact with Hawaii or California. He has lived in New York, Illinois and Massachusetts.

What a putz. I guess the guy who thinks there are 57 states and that Oregon is near the Great Lakes doesn’t realize that California is on the Pacific Ocean.

  1. Obowma’s a fucking idiot.

    • Love your new word for Teh One, Puma-SF. Yep. He’s everything to everyone–including himself. (Oh, myiq2xu, I must agree with our president that Oregon does have a “great” lake: Crater Lake. And I can’t wait to cross-country ski up there this winter!)

    • yep oh yep he is

  2. Let’s see, he made an enemies list like Nixon, he’s getting further into the quagmire in Afghanistan, and he’s spending time in Asia. Hey, maybe he is Nixon.

  3. I just poted this at the end of the last thread but it’s more in place here. According to the BBC this morning
Obama’s “charm offensive” in the Asia-Pacific region brought few tangible results:

    “Apec leaders drop climate target”

In a joint declaration issued at the end of their two-day annual summit, they said: “We firmly reject all forms of protectionism and reaffirm our commitment to keep markets open and refrain from raising new barriers to investment or to trade in goods and services.”

They also agreed to keep stimulus spending in place until a recovery was seen.

But leaders have failed to agree a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) forum.

Officials said the leaders – including presidents Barack Obama of the US and Hu Jintao of China – now viewed the Copenhagen summit as a “staging post”, and not an end point, in the search for a global deal to cut emissions of greenhouse gases.

  4. Barack did make history, not done since Nixon:

    • Brooks in that video: [Obama's] epic hypocrisy is a window into his conscience.

      • I thought so. He made a huge point about taking McCain to task if he did not go with public financing (uh, hello Barack, it’s the McCain-Feingold act) and as soon as McCain committed, B0 claimed public financing would be too limiting for the great and powerful O.

He is a narcissist of the first order, with little active conscience on display.

  5. Well, you know Obama has been trying to turn himself into a middle American politician ( geographically) ever since he decided to enter into the field. He deliberately chose Chicago as his home base.

In Hawaii his Punahou schooling might have worked against him, whereas in Chicago he could work up his community service, and his mother on food stamps meme.

    • Obama moved to Chicago to help organize the AA community for Mayor Harold Washington. Washington was mayor but was in a power struggle with the Daley Machine.

Some of Washington’s limosine liberal supporters in Hyde Park (where the University of Chicago is located) hired Obama.

He worked in Chicago’s South Side, but he lived in Hyde Park. Bill Ayers lives in Hyde Park too.

After Washington died, Obama left for law school. When he got back to Chicago he started ingratiating himself with the Daley’s.

      • I was looking for something on Penny Pritzker-the Chicago inventor of chopped up mortgages, but found this oldie but goldie instead:

Obama spent three years in the city, from 1985, after he graduated from Columbia University, to the end of the Washington era. As a community organizer, he tried to turn a partnership of churches into a political force on the South Side. But the work accomplished very little.

In 1988, Obama left for Harvard Law School, returning to Chicago twice for summer stints at élite law firms, including, after his first year, Sidley Austin. (Sidley Austin is where he met Michelle Robinson, whom he married in 1992.) He returned to Chicago permanently when he graduated, in 1991. In a short period, he built a notable résumé and a network of connections. During the 1992 Presidential campaign, he ran a voter-registration drive that placed him at the center of the city’s politics.

During Project Vote, Obama also began to understand the larger world of Chicago’s liberal fund-raisers. “He met people not just in the African-American community but in the progressive white community,” David Axelrod said. “The folks who funded Project Vote were some of the key progressive leaders.” Obama met Axelrod through one of Project Vote’s supporters, Bettylu Saltzman, whose father, Philip M. Klutznick, was a Chicago shopping-mall tycoon, a part owner of the Bulls, and a former Commerce Secretary in the Carter Administration. Saltzman, a soft-spoken activist who worked for Senators Adlai E. Stevenson III and Paul Simon, took an immediate interest in Obama. “I honestly don’t remember what it was about him, but I was absolutely blown away,” Saltzman says. “I said to several people that this guy, who is now thirty years old, is someday going to be President. He will be our first black President.”

Making it –New Yorker by ryan lizza

      • Just for the sake of clarity, Hyde Park and the University of Chicago are on the South Side; Altgeld Gardens and the Roseland/Pullman area Obama supposedly organized are just further south (from Downtown).

The timeline and motivation for Obie’s move to Chicago in 1985 are both fuzzy too. He was in New York, along with Billy Ayers, until 1985. Washington was mayor, and Axelrod, who went on to work on Washington’s re-election bid, was just opening shop. At any rate, most reports claim Obie went to Chicago after working as a community organizer in New York in response to Jerry Kellman’s ad. Incidentally, some accounts claim Kellman had to sell Obama on the idea, meeting with him in a coffee shop to persuade him, but, whether the meeting took place in New York or Chicago depends on who you ask.

        • I don’t know Chicago, I’ve never been closer than Kansas.

When Obama was in NY he was working for some outfit that published a international finance/business newsletter. Then he supposedly saw Kellman’s ad, contacted him, and Kellman arranged to meet him in NY when he was there on other business.

That’s one version. Every story about Obama’’s past has ambiguities, contradictions, and little or no corroboration.

          • Obie had 2 jobs in New York, according to the New York Times; one with New York Public Interest Group, the second as a community organizer with City College in Harlem.

          • Then the NYT is wrong, as usual. He also worked as a jr copywriter for the newsletter in myiq’s comment.

          • NYPIG/City College of Harlem; same job, community organizer/project coordinator. NYPIG and Harvard Law Black Alumni corroborate.

Business International Group came first. Multiple sources give various timelines, but Politifact gives this supposedly full resume, and says he was a research assistant who wrote a newsletter.

As I said, finding definitive info on Obie’s past is not the easiest thing in the world.

          • I had the BIG and NYPIG names confused.

        • Yep, Hyde Park is technically on the South Side, but the U of C has done everything in its power to wall the neighborhood off from the surrounding communities. Not sure if it is still this way, but when I was a student there (late 80s/early 90s) there was literally a fence behind the law school separating it from the Woodlawn neighborhood south of 61st.

  6. Noam a bit long winded, but a must watch:

  7. Jeebus, even more scathing of Obama backers/advisors:

    • WOW- On the selection of advisors, the first being Biden ” an old time Washington insider” and “strongest supporter of the Iraq War in the Senate…just like kicking your supporters in the face, but people went along with it.”

“The next major appointment was Chief of Staff..Rahm Emanuel, the strongest supporter of the Iraq War in the House, and also the recipient of the most funding from the financial services industry than any other..”

      • Leading economic advisor -Robert Rubin “Sec of Treasury under Clinton whose “main achievement was to undermine the Glass Steagall Act…”

        • And Chomsky says it so calmly. This was a great presentation and really illustrated how marketing rules our politics. I loved how he mentioned that the Obama campaign beat out Apple for best marketing of the year award. I snorted my water all over the keyboard on that one.

  8. This Nov 09 Hard Talk interview with Chomsky is good too. The interviewer is in fact a liberal, but the format of hard talk, is to present main stream criticism and allow the interviewee to respond.

  9. And this:

Thomas Ferguson’s 5 part Video titled
“Obama should save banks not bankers”
    April 6, 2009

    He’s definitely got Pres. Obama’s number….
    Part 2
“Wall St. has been backing Obama from the start”

    Part 5
“The federal budget must stop being largely a subsidy for the rich”

    • Only the first two thirds of each vidoe is the actual interview. The last third is basically “upcoming events’ on the Real News Network which did the interview.

    • Great interviews-thx.

Ferguson ( Political Science professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston) did a study of early Campaign 08 money, and found

that it was perfectly obvious that Obama was the candidate of Finance to an almost exclusive degree.” (Banks, Investment Houses, Private Equity, Insurance).

No wonder they’re doing their darnedest to push through this Health Care bill.

      • This is what I’ve believed all along.

Obama is no ” Socialist “.

        Wall Street owns him.

And they are taking us all for a ride.

        Off a cliff….

      • And yes-was it or was it not it a (manufactured) financial crisis which got him into the WH?

(riding in on Bill Clinton’s coat tails)

  11. Jack Kennedy served in the Pacific theater during WWII and was a hero who rescued his own crew after his PT boat went down.

  12. I notice the confluence hasn’t done a post on Hillary’s Time cover story. Is that coming?

  13. Well, they’ve neglected several other “firsts’ of this president:

    1) he’s the first one whose last name starts with an O;
    2) he’s the first one to use the word “pookie” in a presidential speech;
    3) he’s the first one to use styrofoam Greek columns as a stage prop;
    4) he’s the first U.S. presidential candidate to give a campaign speech in a foreign country

and of course, There’s no one as Irish as Barack O’Bama

    • 6) first US President to make an (unsuccessful) bid for the Olympics
      7) first to inspire an office called TOTUS
      8) first to cut a promo for George Lopez sitcom
      9) first to make Chrissy’s leg tingle

      • the smiley with the shades was a number 8

        • Using brackets [] or braces{} instead of parentheses () gets around the “cool smiley” problem.

      • 10. first one to use the phrase “wee weed up” in any context, public or private (I’d bet a thousand on that, heck, 10 thousand, it’s a sure win)

        11. first one to ask that Christian symbols be removed from venues where he’s speaking

        12. first one to have an “Office of the President Elect”

        13. first one to claim something is “above my pay grade”

      • 14) first to give the finger to his female co- Democratic rival in public.
        15) first to harvest tomatoes in less than a month from a WH organic veg patch
        16) first to have attended a church for 20 years without ever listening to a sermon (ok maybe he wasn’t the first-but he was the first to admit it)

      • hilariously true what a lame brain

  14. In Parade this morning it’s reported that, for the first time since 1938, workers’ salaries have gone DOWN when compared with the previous year. Worker’s made more in 2008 than 2009.

Heckuva job Barack. This one’s on him since he’s been president for all of 2009.

  15. I have no problem with Obama aspiring to be Nixon. As long as he gets the whole package.

  16. SNL is dipping its toe a bit in relevance, cautiously using Biden rather than Obama as foil – but the topic is good
